Growing up in poverty, Sunny never expected anything good from life. However, even he did not anticipate being chosen by the Nightmare Spell and becoming one of the Awakened — an elite group of people gifted with supernatural powers.

Transported into a ruined magical world, he found himself facing against terrible monsters — and other Awakened — in a deadly battle of survival.

What’s worse, the shadow powers he received happened to possess a small, but potentially fatal side effect… Collapse

The novel has a lot of potential, yet ruined by the glacier pacing of the story.

Has good use of grammar, flows well, interesting magic system etc.

Yet here we are in the 200s and the character has barely gone anywhere.

We will have flashbacks that go on and for dozens of chapters that only needed a paragraph or three.

It's just spinning your heels waiting while author goes for word quantity over wuality of story.

    Beware before reading.

I don't recommend this. It gives the impression to be relatively good, but it's not. The snail pace is exhausting, making you bored. Its more teen drama than adventure.

The flaw of the MC is "you can't lie" , but it isn't. It should be "you have to say the truth". At least the author thinks it works that way. You have to speak, you can't choose not to. Unless the author forgets, which happens.

The two things that make this unreadable, the self inserts by the author, when they forget that the character is a poor beggar who hasn't read webnovel tropes. The other self insert, when the MC feels insecure and ogles everyone as really, really, really ridiculously good looking. It's obsessive. It's super cringe puke gtfo

This is too much I continued reading the novel hoping that Sunny our Mc would have chance to improve himself. But the Author is always kicking our Mc while he is down with no regards whatsoever. Just when we see him improve a little "remember that he is skinny, ugly and anti social" it's like the author enjoys punishing our Mc, its too much. Even after all those setbacks our Mc doesn't learn much or improve he would repeat the mistakes. I hope the author uses 'The Hero's Journey' to improve the story telling in Volume 2 and onwards. Normally in story after the challenges there would be a transformation but for sunny it means more punishment after the Ordeal.

I have high expectations for this novel, based on my previous review Im Keeping it at 4/5.

TLDR: I felt it had potential, but I eventually found the MC too unlikable and the story too masochistic to continue. Cool setting concept though.

(It's worth mentioning that I reviewed a few chapters on Webnovel and the author kept it up, so maybe they also thought this was fair criticism?)

    Aight. Here's my take.
I really liked the first few chapters. The setting was interesting, the MC was thoughtful and cold and calculating, it seemed well written and I had high hopes after those chapters.
And then things went kinda bad imo.

    Here are my 3 issues.

    Issue #1
The MC received his first flaw. His Flaw is that he is literally compelled to answer anyone who talks to him and to tell nothing but the "truth". Which just sorta turns him into an unbearable goofy jackass.
But the real issue for him, is if anyone ever asks him what his real name is, he will become their eternal slave. Yep. Forever slave. And he is compelled to tell them the truth if they ask, mind you.
Being forced to only speak truth was enough. Being forced to open your mouth and babble anytime any jackass speaks in your direction, is too much.

    Issue #2
Sunny's personality goes through a dramatic shift after he gets his Flaw.
In the first few chapters we are shown that he is a cold and intelligent killer. A master manipulator who has what it takes to survive. An antihero who can rise to the top, if you will.
But he very quickly becomes a whiney, goofy, betaboi idiot. His Flaw forces him to talk, but it doesn't force him to be such an annoying twat. That's all him.
Everyone rightfully hates him because he's a "I'm sOoO RaNdOm LoL!!" jackass who "truthfully" insults everyone he meets and apparently our previously cold blooded killer can't even look at a girl without cowering. He becomes... kinda pathetic? And not in a fun way.

    Issue #3
The author really, really, really, loves whipping and screwing over their MC. They love it so much, that it often spoils the plot. Setback after setback with very little payoff.
He just gets more and more pathetic. And it makes me feel bad. I don't wanna read 200+ chapters of the MC getting beat like a dog.
The author said something about him needing to hit rock bottom when I asked, but guys, Sunny is literally a dirty, malnourished, orphan, slave boy who has been beaten every day of his life. His family was murdered, he has those annoying Flaws I mentioned earlier, and he's stuck in a death game and only has borderline useless shadow powers to live.
He f#cking started at rock bottom! We don't need to punch down anymore! It's bad storytelling!
    It's almost S&M smut.

Bleh. Anyways. This is just my opinion after reading up to volume two. I dipped out after I saw it was more of the same.
Maybe I'll circle back someday and give it another shot. Maybe not.
    Hope this helped.

I agree with everything you said, especially number 2.

I was so excited to see Sunny grow his strength, evolve from his victim mentality, rise and show those other arrogant fools who he can really be. Take control of his own life.

Instead not only the pace is extremely slow (and the chapters getting smaller), but we keep going backwards on his personality.

The moment he went through his
the novel dissapointed me. First of all, why the f#ck does he even care in the first place? A person with his background and life experience wouldn't give a damn about what others are dreaming on doing. He would care about his own ass and that's it.

And in recent chapters he often thinks to himself "they are not talking to me anymore" or "they are keeping secrets from me" when observing the two girls.

Did he become retarded? Is he seeking pity or approval because they are girls?

Why are you expecting people to treat you differently that they have your ENTIRE LIFE? Aren't you used to it? I can tell you why, because author needs to create drama.

MC turned into someone i stopped cheering for. He continues to be weak, both physically and mentally and the only reason he is even allowed to walk with the main group is because he has useful utility skills, such as scouting and seeing in the dark. He keeps behaving submissively to all the girls (but is jealous of every man). Everyone is stronger than him, i bet even the blind girl can kick his ass now with her random ass weapon.

Author keeps making him suffer exaggeratedly with no purpose since he forgets his own lessons learned, with a slow as hell personal growth, with unbelievable plot armor saves, in a world where every other named character is stronger than him (only very recently STARTED to change), where the great majority of monsters is INCREDIBLY stronger than him, and his personality devolves from where he was at the beginning.

Oh, have i mentioned how Sunny is short, weak, skinny and ugly? Dont worry because the author does it every other chapter. Even now with his body evolving he is BARELY average by the way.

It gets me angry because it has so much potential with the world building, but i guess it's just too tempting to kick Sunny down every other chapter and turn him into a g-g-girl w-w-worshiping blushing buffoon.

I think author wants to show that MC admires nephis for her power but it comes off as simping. At start nephis has that leading character aura and mc is supposed to take as a target and instead of having survival as his goal changes to becoming powerful, that's the whole first arc . But it later becomes something else like your new friends stop playing with you and hang out with a different group and MC gets angry frustrated jealous etc and breaks after finding that his role model is starting a genocide.
We also get the true thoughts of MC that comes as whiny simp. But he sill mostly acts coolheaded if remove all his inner monolog about his insecurities.
Then character dev should follow like in naruto he also simps for sakura but later he is like naw
        but that doesn't happen.......... gloom

yeah, I only read till cliffhanger 199, but now he is full-on simp. sigh at least there is chap 226 the Fool where he does some introspection about being a simp and acting like a fool just to escape the reality of his "friends" can't be trusted and starts being coolheaded again.

              But he's soooo op now.
              It's actually amazing.
              And also he's more independent.

He loses a lot of his.... Issues. Over time.

I don't want to say more but like.... just binge it and eventually you'll be happy.

I have left a bunch of these comments in some chapters while I was reading 2 years ago and I am happy that people still comment to tell me to continue reading. It just fills me up with joy 😊, I love this novel and community on this site.

The author really, really, really, loves whipping and screwing over their MC.

Everytime i meet such forced drama i'm evade novel as plague. Idk why english originals authors so love to put mc to rock bottom and below. Moreover why readers read such trash? One day just full webnovel top was about it.
Maybe they want to show how mc grow but where they get so much self confidence about their writing skills? It's not so easy to show personality changes from absolute bottom to the top. Even for good psychologist such changes will really hard to describe.

But here we don't even see any sign of author willing to make good development of mc. Just authors wish fulfillment about mental damaged teen (why author wishes it is different question) especially with this bullshit about "mc have to speak and speak only truth" + slave thing. I met such restriction some times in novels and everytime characters have choice like: not to speak; speak part of all info; speak truth that not related to question (Q:what your name? A: Friends call me Potato) and so. Here mc only can broke his throat to become speechless.

Brother, I do not know how you read the novel, but your comprehension of what you read is questionable at best and it is poisoning the opinion pool of the ignorant lambs in the comments:
      - Flaw - It is not only the MC bound by flaws. Also there are ways to master, adapt and leverage your flaws...as shown further in the story.
      - Personality - Is having to adapting to a newfound and malicious reality truly a change of personality? The man explained his reason for acting in such "pathetic" way.
      - Difficulty - It does not get easier and the entire cast gets an equal measure of G3's whip of love.
      - Uselessness of Mc's power - Keep reading
      - MC being a simp - Far from it.
