Growing up in poverty, Sunny never expected anything good from life. However, even he did not anticipate being chosen by the Nightmare Spell and becoming one of the Awakened — an elite group of people gifted with supernatural powers.

Transported into a ruined magical world, he found himself facing against terrible monsters — and other Awakened — in a deadly battle of survival.

What’s worse, the shadow powers he received happened to possess a small, but potentially fatal side effect… Collapse

I started stacking chapters from 1903, right at the start of the new arc; each chapter felt like only a third of a proper one.
It’s been so long that when I do come back, I’m going to reread it from the very beginning.
But that’s the thing—should I go back? I’ve read both good and bad things about the upcoming arcs, so I don’t know whether to just stick with how it was or keep going and end up disappointed.
And should I wait until the end of the novel?

I stopped somewhere where he enter the shadow realm, fighting some archer on a dead shadow giant. Convince me to reread again. Still worth it?

So he is still a saint then? It's good then. The next one was the showdown of shadow lord's power and his shadows and Shadows against the many saints his enemy side had, especially after modret turn the tables and making sunny's side looked hopeless. Basically the first time after antartica he managed to showcase his prowess in front of many people, farming aura with all his might.

[It's not a spoiler except that he is a saint.]

Top 5 greatest fall-offs in Webnovel history.
Shadow Slave got me into webnovels, being the first proper webnovel I read a few years ago, it was peak. I remember getting so hyped each arc, watching tik tok edits and glazing sunny against other, now much better novels like lotm and ri saying sunny was better. So I was never a hater, I was a d1 Shadow Slave glazer and an og at that so there are no excuses like I'm larping or a hater.
Now, look, if u wanna read peak for 1700 chapters, go on ahead, you will get your dopamine and Shadow Slave is a great novel at the start, even then the domain war arc after is still a good pass time and the novel is still pretty good up till chapter 2100.
This shit starts falling hard after an arc called Ariels game, its quite literally turns into webnovel slop that I used to read with the same two words being used to describe everything, and the writing quality is just mid although the ending plotwise was nice. And it only gets worse with the mirror city arc, this was the biggest slog ever and I dropped it multiple times during that arc. Basically as a summary he loses his powers and memories, but instead of the interesting personality and outsmarting one he had when he was weak in the first nightmare and forgotten shore, hes just an edgy detective and half the chapters are straight filler. So I dropped it for quite a while, read other novels like Reverend Insanity and half of Lord of the Mysteries, and not long ago, I heard that volume 11 was really good in Shadow Slave and it made a comeback, so I forced myself to read through the mirror city arc hoping it would get better after. It did not. Asterion, one of the most foreshadowed antagonists in the novel, was a complete dissapointment, he really provided barely any challenge only being a sovereign like the others, and simply cooking the side characters while the protagonist was just doing bullshit. This guy provided no tension whatsoever and not once did I ever think; 'oh shi, mc might be cooked' like I used to before. It was more like the antagonist was getting bullied as he was getting 4v1ed by characters of the same rank as him. There were like two moments in the whole of volume 11 where it was interesting:
both amounted to nothing once again leading to no tension.
Now on the overall fall of the novel, it comes from different parts and themes:
    1. Writing quality, idk if its just the strict rules of webnovel writing have to write multiple chapters daily but theres clearly useless filler and constant repeated descriptions and wording
    2. Fan service romance fantasizers - after ch 1700 this novel turned like 1 of 8 of its chapters into bullshit empty romance with gooner descriptions and hollow romance, like the start of the romance was fun and interesting but now its just way too repetitive and badly done. Just check the reddit and youll see all the chuds that just yap all day about his shadows and nephis and constantly sexualizing other characters.
    3. The negative character development, the mc has been fighting against his fate of being a slave since chapter 1, but now hes just a doggy to his friends. He went from 'There is nothing more pathetic than a slave who begins to trust his slaver' to being that pathetic being. Furthermore this guys iq has turned into cabbage, the first nightmare was the biggest catfish, he started as a high iq human who tricked one of the most important people in history and defied fate to a guy whos lucky unlucky and a bit smart to just an average joe who's overpowered.
    4. The complete loss of tension after chapter 2100, if you look at novels like Reverend Insanity and Lord of the Mysteries theres always stronger beings, all with crazy schemes and plans, but in Shadow Slave, everyones dead, all thats left is just braindead nightmare creatures with stronger 'wills' and powers, it just feels like a constant bruteforce scaling with no plans except one guy, but hes already dead and killed everyone else in the process. For the last 1000 chapters the mc has rarely struggled with most of his 'struggles' being completely artificial.
    5. The pacing, the last 1000 chapters could have been condensed into 500 if there wasnt so much yapping and filler, G3 is running out of ideas and the mc has been stuck on the same rank for an uncountable amount of chapters with barely any progress.
    6. The plot, no one dies, everyone of sunnys friends is living happily forever and even the ones that died were brought back

Overall I got way more to say like the VTB fight which was probably the greatest dissapointment in my entire career of reading Shadow Slave but to summarise first 1700 chapter 4.6/5, 1700-2200 3.95/5, everything after 2.9/5.

People form overly high expectations of their favourite novels, and when it doesn't go their way, it must mean the story "sucks".

This doesn't happen in other generic slop with no overarching premise or consistent plot. That nonsense gets overrated while this is hated.

A big reason is also because of the targeted audience. Webnovel audience doesn't care too much for narrative consistency and original world building.
They want simple romance, simple face slapping, and big pay offs. Their brain is also hyper-inventive when it comes to their deep-seated insecurities. They see mc "cuckolding" at every step and express their own frustrations through him. Mc not being a horny alpha with a harem makes him a simp in their books.
