What a hell is going on down here?
Didn't know we could suffer from the "Shadows of Sunny" syndrome in real life...

I have read up until chapter 765. Author definitely has his strong suits in world and storybuilding, fleshing them out slowly, but masterfully. Also, unlike some other people, i think for 95% of the time, sunny's character is evolving pretty neatly and logically up until now. However, unexpectedly for me, there are very big flaws which in my opinion, cannot make this work "top tier" or "one of the best that ive ever read", unlike many people commenting.

Powerscaling. First of all, the big problem i see is with the mc's attribute, that i will not spoiler because it gets revealed pretty instantly -- "Fated". It gives a very blatant carte blanche for author to make ever-increasingly terrible, one-sided fights, and also always provides mc with some leeway to win. At first glance, its a very nice way to explain why he gets in these situations, but also, i started thinking about it as cheap overtime. You can't just keep throwing the MC into impossible odds and expect me to believe he's in genuine danger every time; there is no respite, almost ever. Since every battle is skewed towards the enemy, it just gets really boring to see mc gets in trouble again and again and again, forever outclassed. Surely, battle of wits make some of them really interesting, but for it to happen you have to complicate the powerscaling, in which next problem arrives...

The more complicated it is, the more holes readers can find in it. A lot of battles could go easier and much less exciting, if sunny actually thought a little, and powerscaling was consistent. Some time in the book, you can just see how author tries to come up with a reason of why sunny cant do something, but it either just crumbles under logic or seems like a made up on the spot thing to control his progression without much thought, or after he gets a bit too powerful for the next foe.

And the second most important thing... Flashbacks and time skips. Oh my f#cking god... Incredibly, incredibly annoying, basically infuriating. I actually made an account for the sole reason of making this review after chapter 751. Author is absolutely inept in using those tools coherently. First 60 chapter "time skip" to only flashback later was completely useless and quickly lost its novelty reading through it, making the timeline weird, making the reader forget some possibly important pieces of the story. After that, it wasnt that big of a deal, but i still do remember a few rather annoying skips. HOWEVER, the time-skip on chapter 751 made me absolutely furious, no joke. Ill try my best to say it in non-spoiling way.. After a big, drawn-out fight, as mc had a lot of events, possible meet-ups and interesting interactions piled up, author just decided to completely f#cking skip all of that, so it would be easier for him to say "oh, well, he took some time to come to sense with his psyche and polish the techniques", which is a roundabout way of saying "well now mc is fully restored and i can write about his powers easily without thinking of his inexpirience, and without putting any actual writing into it". It simply almost made me borderline drop the novel on spot.

And yet, ive read up until this point in a mere week. I do think this novel is really good and deserves a read, overall battling is usually interesting, and the story itself is REALLY well constructed. However, i havent seen a good sum-up of my personal criticism of the work, so i decided to write one. I probably missed some very good points for both cons and pros of the novel, and yet i just wanted to share what ive seen be mostly overlooked. Thanks for reading!

Apparently, some people have decided that trolling Shadow Slave is their reason for living. Many accounts have opened and filled this section with negative comments and, even worse, huge spoilers without warning. So stop reading the comments and go straight to the first chapter. Don't be fooled by that 4.1 rating; this is, in my opinion, the best light novel ever written, and maybe we shouldn't even call it a light novel, because while it has the speed, adrenaline, and action that many of us are looking for, it also has much more. This novel justifies all that time wasted on hundreds of disappointing novels, series, or games. Now, you finally found it; stop looking.
