Growing up in poverty, Sunny never expected anything good from life. However, even he did not anticipate being chosen by the Nightmare Spell and becoming one of the Awakened — an elite group of people gifted with supernatural powers.

Transported into a ruined magical world, he found himself facing against terrible monsters — and other Awakened — in a deadly battle of survival.

What’s worse, the shadow powers he received happened to possess a small, but potentially fatal side effect… Collapse

As of Chapter 561, this is honestly surprisingly better than I thought it would be. This novel definitely gives some LOTM mixed with Dark Souls(combat and monsters specifically) vibes, obviously not as good as them but it is still there. The Characters are great and not too over the top, nor seem to be side characters that are vastly overshadowed by the MC. In fact, there are some characters that Overshadow him in some places. Definitely would recommend to others, especially if you like Mysteries or deep-lore that the MC has to uncover.

I don't find anything particularly bad, but from chapter comments I've seen plenty of other readers whine about somethings they don't like (some I can get, others are just insane), so I will list off some of them off and try to explain without spoilers so people will know about it.

Those are the main complaints I have seen and figured some explanation is helpful. All other complaints are usually the types of people who complain about MCs who aren't ruthless to the point he's no longer human or they will complain when an MC doesn't try to get into the pants of every beauty he sees and then have the audacity to turn around and complain when they find an MC who does exactly that. I mean, the MC in this doesn't even have that high of a goal really. He's mentioned that he just want to open up a shop and sell memories(gear) or Soul Shards and he's already somewhat completed that goal. Of course he also wants the strength to live freely but we all know that's end of the novel sh*t so that don't count.

Decided to read the novel again.
And I realized that I'm not a masochist.
Reading over 300 chapters, you must be an SSSRR level masochist.
After that, the novel gets better...
Now you just have to be a masochist.

I read a bit and saw that his class literally makes him a slave. Subsequently he finds a mine and ends up being an idiot in love / enslaved by her and accepts her fate. Is this right?
I don't like MCs without their own will and dignity, those who accept their unfavorable fate without a fight, for example, are not to my liking, so I don't even waste my time getting frustrated

Sunny is literally the exact opposite of this... There have been multiple times when he had to go through the inner turmoil of being a slave and many times when he had an internal monologue on how he was not willing to accept just being a slave, but at the end of the day, he understands that there is nothing he can do about it just yet... As for the main character falling in love and becoming an idiot, that's the stupidest thing I have heard, nowhere in the forgotten shore arc has sunny ever done even a single thing that would make people assume this but the novel readers can't consume the main character not being a natural born leader and have started their own fantasy of MC becoming an idiot in love when in truth, MC was just not good enough yet to be a leader (which has begun changing in latest chapters)

I see, so is it possible to visualize character growth? So I think it's worth reading. Every novel has good and bad arcs. Hoping it really isn't a lovesick idiot, a "simp". Thanks

Well you’ll be wasting your team cause the mc is all of those that you just mentioned. But then again people who don’t mind any of that tend to turn a blind eye to that kind of thing.

MC is just stupid though. He hangs out with others when he can't lie so he's literally setting himself up for failure, also the flaw itself is flawed since it forces him to speak but doesn't let him abstain from speaking. MC could have also cut off his tongue or damaged his own vocal cords so he can't speak in general, when he finds out a fix for his flaw he could heal himself. It's just flawed overall.

Plus most convos with the police or whatever organization manages the people from the nightmares would most likely ask something like 'What's your element as well as do you have a true name' even if the police didn't ask that others would and boom he's now a slave.

I mean it's the thing that's most likely to help him not become a slave.. Since MC clearly didn't want to be a slave. It is a realistic choice to limit his interactions with others or to make it so that he's unable to speak.

Finally someone smart enough to understand... I won't be a slave no matter what.

Even if that means damaging my vocal cord.. And the mumu mc enjoys being a slave too.

Well it’s time, let's start by saying that the story is great, the characters are good, the idea is not unique, but it is well implemented, and the system—yes, this novel has one—is helpful without being too overbearing. However, it has one significant flaw, and that is in the worldbuilding. I'm not talking about the background of the spell, clans, or any of that shit; I'm talking about the world itself. I mean, I'm 600 chp in and aside from a few places like (Academy, and Sunny's living district there's nothing else) like 600 chp and I still don't know where Sunny is living. Does this world even have countries, if yes, then how they’re doing? What about sovereigns? Don't tell me they're all from the same country, and that's just the surface. Many have compared this novel to LOTM, but I learned much more about the world, its inhabitants, history, powerhouses, geography, economy, gods, rules, abilities, etc. in the first 300 chp there than I did in 600 here. But overall 4/5.

most of the modern world is destroyed. half the world lives in "citadels", other half... wasn't explained. Or maybe it's half the world lives comfortably in these citadels, and the other half are street slums. Never heard a name for whichever one MC is from, because, well, he only spent a few chapters in it.

IMO, the world building isn't half bad. I can't stand too much world building. Just throw out a few tidbits and leave the rest up to the reader's imagination.

I'm still only on the 2nd arc, but the only issues I have, so far, is that chapters 209-213 were completely pointless filler. The flash-back portion of this arc also seemed completely pointless, at least to me. Could have summed that up in a chapter or two ... NOT FN 30. Also, the MC's personality. He's supposedly a street rat, but he appears to be really smart and has all this sage advice? Makes no sense...

I see a lot of comments about how sunny isn’t a typical mc and they are completely right, because hes not the mc he’s a side kick. On the other hand nephis is just like those bland cultivation mcs. I’m completely fine with a main character suffering or even being enslaved, but if he just accepts his fate and even willing follows I just can’t stand it. In reverend insanity although it has many flaws, it’s main character is always true to himself and does what he wants ignoring the will of others. Even if fang yuan(ri mc) was a saint if he still had the mindset of being true to himself i would still love it.

lol we see so many people talking about how MC is a slave and that ruins the novel for them when in reality, absolutely nothing of note has happened with him becoming a slave, one incident that did happen could have easily been done differently even if MC wasn't a slave... Other than that until now, slave factor has done nothing to the story yet people still complain how it 'ruined' and 'made the story pointless' 12

You didn't read it properly. He already said if someday Nephis forces him to do anything against his willingness one of them will die.
And from where plot is going the shadow lineage will eventually be devoured by Weavers Lineage which belongs to 'unknown' it already devoured Shadow Gods blood.
He also wants to destroy the spell alongside Nephis so their goals align for now.
