Growing up in poverty, Sunny never expected anything good from life. However, even he did not anticipate being chosen by the Nightmare Spell and becoming one of the Awakened — an elite group of people gifted with supernatural powers.

Transported into a ruined magical world, he found himself facing against terrible monsters — and other Awakened — in a deadly battle of survival.

What’s worse, the shadow powers he received happened to possess a small, but potentially fatal side effect… Collapse

literally zero character development of mc

This is how you know when a person hasn't read past the first few arcs...

Character development means the way a character's personality 'changes' over the period of time, not a 'perfect' character at the first chapter or 'one big traumatizing event that changes everything'... This novel has some of the best character development in the webnovel genre. Unfortunately, the development is very subtle so some people don't even notice how Sunless's mindset has slowly shifted over the years...

That also means they start out low 10-20 (weak/naive) and go to 80-90 (amazing)
Not start out as -100 (garbage human) and get to -20/30 (barely tolerable)

Your understanding of what is considered a flawed character and an antagonist is so shit... Try reading ANY, proper book which doesn't have a mary sue main character and tell me that they arent '-100 garbage human'...

Im not saying this mc is so bad, im just pointing out the flaw in your logic. When i wrote this i was thinking more about grid from overgeared.

As for this book, i dropped it because of second arc with all that timeskip and flashback shenanigan. Why do timeskip and make it 10x harder to understand the story if you're justs gonna backtrack and do a flashback that makes everything we went to understand and piece together the hints meaninless. Also, i didnt like how submissive mc was to 'forgot her name' (likely female lead??).

Thats good... The second arc was indeed bad, the time skip just made things very tedious, but that was the lowest point of the novel and it has only gotten better over the years, so if u want you can pick it back up...

idiot, im talking about the timeskip when they reach forbidden shore city and sunny started living alone. That was their FIRST NIGHTMARE, dont speak if you dont understand. If you dont talk nobody will realize how utterly stupid you are.

Really you think this WN has one of the best character development? Then i think you haven't read that many WNs. Sometimes Mc is so contradictives to his values that i think if this is the same mc. And by character development i dont mean mc becoming more cruel or kind, i meant that in terms of maturity.

Sometimes Mc is so contradictives to his values that i think if this is the same mc.

I have seen the chapters where people leave these comments and the thing is MC's values are always slowly changing. Many times he comes to regret his actions and many times he has to do things which he is unwilling to do. This character is such a good character because the flaws that he has are all deliberate and part of a wide wide character development arc planned by the author. Slowly Sunny changes over the course of the novel, but that doesn't mean that change is always positive. Character development doesn't mean a character becoming perfect, no it means a character changing his personality as the story goes on, hopefully eventually becoming a better character. At the end of the day, this novel isn't for a person who likes to immerse themselves in the MC's shoes and shout that every decision he takes is trash if it isn't the decision they would take. Its a story about Sunless, read that story instead of trying to judge every aspect of it like you are God or a completely perfect being, and every decision you make is always the correct one and anything you disagree with is wrong...

This story is really good, I can see why some people would drop it at mid-end of first spell, but from second spell onwards it picks up again, the best parts are real world arcs for me esp the most recent one at 800+. Most novels tend to fall off at the end but this one starts off really strong, dips slightly then get really addicting again

I actually like this novel so I keep coming back but damn even at 800 chapters... Sunny is still nephies bitch.... Damn swindler

Talking to sunny: If I want something I can have it, if I want someone they will worship me not be my slave... Leeeeemaoooo 29

Moral of the story is: don't be an emotional bitch like sunny that can be controlled by a woman and your emotions with just a few words..... Loool, I'll come back to see when he breaks the curse then I'll continue reading, leemao....

Come back when the novel is finished. Only then is your request fulfilled. The novel is literally called Shadow Slave. And based on what we know both sunny and nephis as well as most probably the spell have the same end goal. So as long as one stays all will stay.

If anyone likes this novel as much as me, then I have an even better recommendation to give you.

Albeit abit slower but it has more in-depth of plot, characters and world-building. Do be mindful tho, because it’s every scene, character, dialogue, and elements/symbols are important so the story is very slow but once it hits the ending of the volume it paints a beautiful picture.

Translation just got back up after 5 years, it’s called Kingdom’s Bloodline.

    If Shadow Slave is 8.5/10
    And LOTM is 9/10
    Then Kingdom’s Bloodline is 10/10.

Nah, Kingdom’s Bloodline is nowhere near LOTM, the best i could describe it is the 'video of a hooligan kicking a puppy' thats gets tons of likes and comments on the internet condeming his action. Here MC being the puppy who gets kicked around like football in a series of never ending misery.

I’m guessing you didn’t get past chapter 15? It’s ok, everyone has diff opinions and likes. You like stories that give each chapter MC Op ness and instant gratification/satisfaction while I like stories that have some semblance of reality in them. In the sense, that a beggar kid is not suddenly gonna go beat whoever crosses him. In LOTM Klein from the start had the cheat of the gray fog which he fell back on. But Thales doesn’t, except his earth memories.

Bro, I read Kingdom's bloodline after reading your comments.
                  I REGRET IT!!!!!!!! 7
I could only read upto chapter 5(where a demented bastard starts killing children very creatively and vividly and the MC is the most useless MC).
Although from the comments I see it is a good novel, but bro why soo much sadness????? crybaby
Shadow Slave atleast till now does not contain 1% of the misery shown in the first 5 chapter of Kingdom's bloddline.
I CAN ONLY SAY IT IS AN ACQUIRED TASTE LIKE REVERAND INSANITY.

He’s useless cuz he’s a kid and raised a beggar idk if u suddenly want him to become goku. Later he does become one of most powerful n feared.

Hi friend, I am one of the guys that did not like Shadow Slave. There are some major plotholes in my opinion and some turnoffs. I read I think 150+ chapters but it reached a point where it was too much
, the mc is also not cunning, and if it was reality, were nothing goes unnoticed and unpunished he would have been chained and brought for experimentation. I also do not like LOTM, some chapters are unnecessary, mc is kind. I think because he is kind, at least in the beggining, and makes some decisions that I can not comprehend, that I do not like it. I want to read Kingdom's Bloodline after you mentioned it, but can you make me some things clear? 1) Is mc cunning and ruthless? I do not like drama and emotions in a world that is about survival, you can have those only when you are powerfull or too weak (stabilized environment). 2) What makes him different from other humans on that novel? There is no point reading a novel where author dumbs down everyone so he can make the mc appear smart. 3) Is there Female Lead? I want to know so I can prepare myself, preferably I want because there are too many benefits of having a woman be it physical or emotional, though should be after careful consideration. 4) How many chapters till he becomes kinda powerfull and they don't step on him? 5) Is he a beta? Beta means that he is pushed by either friends or situations into doing something, not by his own decisions. 6) Does he have a goal? why did he choose that goal (because of a trauma or just because he wants to be powerfull)? I would really appreciate if you reply back on this. satisfied
Edit: I came after seeing the tags Child Protagonist and Caring Protagonists, what is this about? I can only compromise since it had the Gore and Rape tags. But how much kind is he? lshock

                  1. He’s not ruthless or cunning but he is smart.
                  2. Later on you will see why he’s main character, he’s very special.
                  3. So far no female lead, he’s 7 anyways plus nvm it’d be a spoiler
                  4. It takes a while for him to get powerful bro in the first 10 chapters everyone leaves cuz he gets stepped on lol.
                  5. He’s not a beta but transmigrated to a beggar so yea he gets beat like hell but remember it’s like a real book, very realistic
                  6. He has good goals both from transmigrated or beggar viewpoints.
He’s a 7 yrs old beggar child and lives in the slums so yea there’s quite the gore. Plus the power system and power users are very cruel and mysterious so gore is expected lol.

Sorry I forgot about this but now I’ll answer.

It is hidden gem and a masterpiece. I bet many dropped because of the slow start, well including me. Luckily after chapter 33 it starts to make sense.
At first when you read this novel, you will not be given any sort of background, about mc, why, where and even what type of world he transmigrated to.
Normally, in transmigrated novel we always know what type of world MC transfer in first chapter. But nope. Mainly why? Because mc is in his lowest point of life and very realistic I must say.
How can lowly beggars knows every thing about world? Unlike you typical cliches "I heard someone said about power inside this ruin" No.
It will confuse readers a lot, I must say author really bold to not reveal about the world and the system in early time.
Also there are POV changes many times.
Yes MC is kind a naive, then again killing a person doesn't make you into f#cking avengers

Basically every divine ability user have something that ‘spell’ can’t really break, like: sunnys will to survive despite all odds, nephis grandiose goal that she never stops pursuing, mordret don’t really know here, but I think u see a point. We know that ‘spell’ isn’t a friendly thing, it fair but in its own wicked way; so why can’t it give flaws accordingly, play from another angle? sunny is the only one that ‘spell’ bitch slapped in a face with a flaw while nephis and mordret basically have a free pass, about mordret we’ll see, but nephis definitely (if her flaw isn’t pain that makes her almost mad and the one that u can’t adapt then it’s not really a flaw. We even saw how she’s trying to adapt to it on the ‘forgotten shores’ , sunny can’t do the same, he can’t stay silent and just resist he’s forced to answer) so I think it would’ve made more sense to give her a flaw that’s gonna burn small part of her every time she uses her powers. Like every time she uses her powers some of her memories that define her personality or char become more surreal or faint until they completely disappear. (Not an abrupt but slow/illusive so that she not even realise until someone says something like

“sunny: hey neph have you visited your mom after you wake up?
Neph: yeah, I talk with her about a good old days when I was ….. I was ….. I can’t remember.”

I think u can see a point here) Of course it’s not completely hopeless and she can resist a flaw to some extent like constantly replaying her memories in her head in order not to forget anything, but if forgets something then later even if she remembers it with the help of others it’s not gonna appear real anymore, like if its just an empty shell without any emotional weight, just an echo. It would’ve put so much more depth and made her char really worthy to be 2nd mc.

We know everything has a flaw. The flaw doesn't come from the spell the flaw comes from before. Why? Because the daemons including weaver who created the spell are the flaws of the gods as hope told us. But still we know there are 7 daemons yet 6 gods. Where does the 7th flaw come from? Either we have a hidden god or a second flaw. If we look closer at Sunny's ability that does look like a flaw and the explanation any shadow should have a master especially a divine one doesn't make sense if you remember the shadow god the most divine of all shadows didn't have a master neither did the shadow monster that sunny possessed. As such i think the flaws are copies of power as death is a copy of life and night the copy of day, all copies created by the shadow god. As we're flaws first he failed to make a flaw creating the firstborn of the unknown, weaver, then he succeeded creating hope nether etc. Based on what we know shadow when mastered is the strongest of all. He waits for every god in death. He copies what they create and improves upon it. Sunny to has that power / destiny.

Woah woah hold on there, second flaw you mean besides one flaw some god had two? I don’t think your theory is correct but I’m lazy to write why. I’m more concerned about balance, even if you’re right and let’s say nephis flaw are just a copy of someone else’s we have no idea from whom her flaw been originally copied, so author/spell could’ve give her any flaw he liked, flaw that at least creates some stakes not this bullshit “to use your abilities you have to suffer,” right now sunny is the only one who’s been royally fck by a flaw.
