Growing up in poverty, Sunny never expected anything good from life. However, even he did not anticipate being chosen by the Nightmare Spell and becoming one of the Awakened — an elite group of people gifted with supernatural powers.

Transported into a ruined magical world, he found himself facing against terrible monsters — and other Awakened — in a deadly battle of survival.

What’s worse, the shadow powers he received happened to possess a small, but potentially fatal side effect… Collapse

    I'm at chapter 947.

I started reading this novel without much expectations, as I thought that it was a bit over-rated and should be somewhat good.

Ah... I'm terribly wrong. This is one of the greatest fantacy kind of novels I've ever read and deserves both recognition and praise. Well, I even consider it to be the greatest. Comparable to LOTM. Personally, I can't choose the best between the two. But you know, I'm more and more liking this novel.

At first, it's really hard to understand various concepts introduced in the novel. But gradually, it really makes sense when you're into the story. Ahh... It's such a journey.

I'm glad I crossed across this novel.

    TLDR: 10/10

    P.S.
Before I started reading this novel, I came across some comments who said that the main character is a simp and other things. Due to that, I avoided reading this novel for some time. I don't want to be harsh but I don't think they've ever heard of puberty. Anyway, Sunny is one of most resilient and durable person I've seen in the novel... and a little crazy. That's actually the best part.

Also, why are the ratings so low for such a novel. I expected it to be 4.6 or 4.7.
I can hardly believe it. There's also review bombing on the ratings and comment section. I don't know why the novel receives such hate.

    PEACE.

honest review after reading 700, I m just too irritated, even after going through so much close death situation and having this much power, any fking random character makes him fear and almost kills him in the fight everytime. we are fking bored to see this weak ass MCs getting nearly killed everytime fighting with random characters. after having divine aspects, powerful memories, good shadows he should be stronger then all fking legacies and he is still getting thrashed by some 1 soul cour awakened nubs that's so bullshit.
Mc at their level should be absolute monster and should be able to fight people with even few minor realms higher strength than him, but in this mc case any fking side characters beats him half dead in every fight.

I think you mean Nevis, it has the most powerful destructive aspect.
Sunny's aspect is a utilitarian type of support, although it is more comprehensive.
He also fought people much stronger than him and defeated them (after long observation, planning, and some luck).

Why is he always close to death? This is a dark fantasy novel where death is everywhere, not wuxia where mc is the lucky son of heaven who probably married the goddess of luck.

Not only nephi, he lost utterly against mordet, he wasn't able to cope up again effie, he even had very very very hard time defeating some legacy people. I don't have any problem with him having close death experience but he should be able to use most off his powers at best level, not just some half asses tricks. Having divine aspects, memories, and growing abilities if he still get beaten to death in same realm of power, it's waste. I am close to 1000 chapters I hope this author doesn't make him tooo much of fool 'hero' type of mc. And 1 more thing mordet should be and most powerful ally he could have but author made situation so complicated.

It did annoy me a bit too , since he was a divine aspect owner that he struggle against others , but I've seen that his aspect is both accumulative and a late bloomer (shadow dance needs a lot of experience to grow)
          .

later on the advantages from him aspect will only increase, and it will show why it is a divine aspect.

This isn’t that kind of story so drop it if that’s all you want. It’s a gruelling struggle up to this point of the novel. The MC is not the strongest, at least not yet. It’s the Naruto/One Piece plot only darker and more complicated.

But if you’re willing to forego the SS fantasy then you’re in for a treat… and a long haul.

Amazing novel, read it once at about 800 chaps then waited a while and have now read up to 1900. Will be coming back in another year or two.

Great novel all round with good worldbuilding which changes and brings new things each volume. Great power system which is well established.

The best thing about the book is by far the character development though, not just for the MC but for all supporting characters. No one's an idiot and interactions are believable and develop well. MC starts off as one person and through interactions with other members of the cast evolves into someone else completely. He is dealt a tough hand and has to combat it with wit and a fair amount of madness.

The plot is also well thought out with some twists coming that started developing hundreds (almost thousands now) of chapters ago.
I don't see any obvious flaws in the novel and it only seems to get better as it goes on. Well done Author-san! Overall rating imo 9.5/10

P.S anyone got any recommendations for similar novels. xx
P.P.S yes obviously I've read LOTM xD

Good Dish. Funny that Shadow Slave is surrounded by mediocre novels in All Time Popular top 10 list. Like most of the decent novel here in ranobes, they are in lower list. It's because most people here in ranobes only reads an absolute below average or straight up brainded novels.

You said you're looking for something to read, let Lao Tzu recommend a couple.
I prefer books on the light side, rather than villains, grimdark and gore. I like a happy ending. I like good MCs, not morons with tantrums everywhere.

        Some of the better classics
        I Shall Seal the Heavens
        King of Gods
        Desolate Era
        Weapon Master
        Sovereign of 3 Realms
        Upgrade Specialist in Another World
        A Will Eternal
        Otherworldly Evil Monarch
        Martial World
        Martial Universe
        Heavenly Jewel Master

There's new ones that's ongoing but fantastic, Unintended Cultivator and Beware Of Chicken.
One I've read a couple thousand chapters of but it won't end, Nine Star Hegemon Body Art

Other xianxia but a little different from the classic King of Gods flavor, (more dao/xianxia)
        My Girlfriend from Turquoise Pond
My Senior Brother is too Steady
        My Disciples are All Villains
        Tori Transmigrated

Xuanhuan/LItRPG that are exceptional, mostly Korean though,
        I Alone Level Up
        The Legendary Mechanic (top recommendation)
        Seoul Station Necromancer
        Everyone Else is a Returnee
        The Tutorial is too Hard
        The Emperor of Solo Play
The Reincarnation of the Strongest Sword God
        The Great Thief
The Great Thief that Roamed the World
        Pocket Hunting Dimension

Lastly, there are some amazing ones that are still ongoing, such as Chrysalis, Monroe, Complete Martial Arts Attributes, AFK in the Zombie Apocalypse, and National Transfer: Necromancer I am a Disaster

      Blame the author.

In the first chapters, Sunny shows a distorted view of the world, seeing a colder and more brutal place. He himself explains that it seems that he has some loose screws that prevent him from interacting with other people. It's as if he lacks empathy.

So, in the second arc, exactly as you said, he acts like a normal person, with normal emotions.

The author could even say that he gained back some of his emotions due to his weakness of only being able to speak the truth. But, well, at least as far as I've read, it's as if the character himself hasn't noticed his change. He just changed and that's it.

And that's why so many people complain. It's incongruous. It causes strangeness, and ends up interrupting the reader's immersion.

So, the author shouldn't have used the word unable to understand others and having a few screws loose. At least, not in the first arc, after all, the first impression is the strongest.

If I have to say, the author could very well go back to the first arc, eliminate the part about Sunny having a few screws loose and give a few more paragraphs describing his fear, hesitation and the feeling of having eliminated his teammates, of killing for the first time (even if they were evil).

If a few changes were made, giving the idea that Sunny, despite being cold, is normal, I believe half of the complaints would disappear.

Well I do get that, and I think that would be great, this isn't from a OMNISCIENT READERS VIEWPOINT (shameless plug of a great novel), and it's instead told from Sunny's perspective. He truly does believe at the time he had a few screws loose, and he definitely does, but from trauma rather than a mental illness. Countless times he wishes he had killed Cassie, or ig let her die, in the Forgotten shores. He constantly has to argue against doing brutal psychopathic things to speed through his problems. Most of the earlier chapters all the way until the cohort goes into the second nightmare is him going, man I could so easily kill this baby(fake example to avoid spoilers), but oh no, the people I have to trust with my life that I am starting to care about wouldn't like that, so I won't. Until the
he wasn't concerned with much other than his life, and his growth. He still values his life above most others
and wouldn't hesitate to murder in cold blood to keep himself alive, but he is at a point in strength and mentality where he'd rather wait until all other options are exhausted before that point.
