Growing up in poverty, Sunny never expected anything good from life. However, even he did not anticipate being chosen by the Nightmare Spell and becoming one of the Awakened — an elite group of people gifted with supernatural powers.

Transported into a ruined magical world, he found himself facing against terrible monsters — and other Awakened — in a deadly battle of survival.

What’s worse, the shadow powers he received happened to possess a small, but potentially fatal side effect… Collapse

Y'all judging sunny have to know that he's a very realistic character
Like why do y'all expect a cold character with no emotions
His emotions and behaviours are what makes him real mimo

      Blame the author.

In the first chapters, Sunny shows a distorted view of the world, seeing a colder and more brutal place. He himself explains that it seems that he has some loose screws that prevent him from interacting with other people. It's as if he lacks empathy.

So, in the second arc, exactly as you said, he acts like a normal person, with normal emotions.

The author could even say that he gained back some of his emotions due to his weakness of only being able to speak the truth. But, well, at least as far as I've read, it's as if the character himself hasn't noticed his change. He just changed and that's it.

And that's why so many people complain. It's incongruous. It causes strangeness, and ends up interrupting the reader's immersion.

He was like that due to his upbringing, he's still very cold towards people he doesn't consider allies, he's just tolerant of them and can act very well.

So, the author shouldn't have used the word unable to understand others and having a few screws loose. At least, not in the first arc, after all, the first impression is the strongest.

If I have to say, the author could very well go back to the first arc, eliminate the part about Sunny having a few screws loose and give a few more paragraphs describing his fear, hesitation and the feeling of having eliminated his teammates, of killing for the first time (even if they were evil).

If a few changes were made, giving the idea that Sunny, despite being cold, is normal, I believe half of the complaints would disappear.

Well I do get that, and I think that would be great, this isn't from a OMNISCIENT READERS VIEWPOINT (shameless plug of a great novel), and it's instead told from Sunny's perspective. He truly does believe at the time he had a few screws loose, and he definitely does, but from trauma rather than a mental illness. Countless times he wishes he had killed Cassie, or ig let her die, in the Forgotten shores. He constantly has to argue against doing brutal psychopathic things to speed through his problems. Most of the earlier chapters all the way until the cohort goes into the second nightmare is him going, man I could so easily kill this baby(fake example to avoid spoilers), but oh no, the people I have to trust with my life that I am starting to care about wouldn't like that, so I won't. Until the
he wasn't concerned with much other than his life, and his growth. He still values his life above most others
and wouldn't hesitate to murder in cold blood to keep himself alive, but he is at a point in strength and mentality where he'd rather wait until all other options are exhausted before that point.

Dropping at 1772, and a review.

Fantasy: I have nothing but praise here. The concept may not be new, but what matters is how it’s implemented, and the author does excel in that regard. Mythology and history, while not the main focus, are handled thoroughly. You’ll know it’s good stuff when find yourself coming up with theories about events and things left unsaid. There are some fumbles and inconsistencies, but these are more related to the writing rather than the genre or idea itself. 5/5

Action: If you're here for the fight scenes, you've come to the right place. There are times when the story consists of nothing but battles for long stretches, just remember fight sequences in Naruto. However, the author deliberately lowers the intelligence of the nightmare creatures (NCs) starting around volume 3. There are moments when the main character is surrounded by hundreds of NCs, each with at least one unique abl, and the only reason he survives is that instead of drowning him with a barrage of ab, 95% of them simply charge at him. 3.5/5

Adventure: Easiest genre to incorporate into any novel. Every vol, you can expect a new location and risky situations at every turn. However, in my opinion, this becomes excessive, as moments that should evoke worry instead lead to apathy. Additionally, the main character lacks an inherent, personal goal—one that is truly his own. All of his objectives are merely reactions to someone else’s decisions or actions. While he does have short-term goals, aka becoming stronger to break free, there's no overarching goal.
    4/5

Romance: For the first 1,500 chapters, it was practically nonexistent—the closest thing to romance was mental masturbation. The author obsessively writes about the main character ogling everyone as if they were unbelievably, ridiculously good-looking. You won’t find more than 3 chapters without this, and sometimes entire chapters are dedicated to describing "city-toppling" beauty using the same vocabulary that was already used to describe the previous three levels of beauty. More recently, romance has started to develop rapidly, reaching a point of 120% saturation. 2/5

Character: None to begin with. He went from manipulator with the qualities needed to survive—a character with distinct looks and values shaped by his experiences, with the potential to rise to the top at the end of Volume 1—to a whiny, dull, beta-boy idiot who can't even look at a girl without cowering.
Behaving like an indecisive teenage in love.
Insulting everyone he meets with “truth”, and never learns from his mistakes to repeat them over and over.
"How did we get here?" Women. Aka Nephis, aka star of RUIN, who basically assassinated mc personality becoming his personal drug. In the most recent chapters, he's essentially an edgelord. 1/5

      A comprehensive review.

Fantasy: While I agree with majority of what you said, but we are severely lacking
Concrete information, why did the human war between nations start? How did the nascent forms of legacies start and react to the spell? How did the name legacy came to be? And many more.

Action: I believe the lower intelligence checks out, as there is a reason why Humans are able to fight above their weight class and why that weight is usually upto Devils.

Adventure: While it is true that overexposure leads to exhuastion in interest, but there is a reason why g3 puts the so called "boring" Arcs between the highs.

Romance: Slow romance isn't necessarily a bad thing, no progress is the problem, which is not present in this particular novel. The words "ogling" and "every three chapter" are great exaggerations, while the author does give a semi-detailed information, that is not objectively a bad thing as it helps out in visualization of the story. From what i remember, i don't think g3 has ever used or enunciated the word "city toppling beauty", I don't remember every single vocabulary used for appreciation of beauty in this novel, however, if everybody is climbing to the peak of the mountain of beauty, wouldn't there paths eventually converge? I guess this arc is one of the "boring" ones for you.

Character: I don't understand where people get the idea that Sunny is some sort of manipulator, he has never "manipulated" Someone, he poisoned people, he used the mountain king to end the hero, improvisation, that's what he can even remotely be called a master of.

He has never lost his qualities needed for survival, instead they just shine to a lessor degree compared to the goals that he acquired by his experiences showcased in this novel, which include but are not limited to, seeing Rain live a safe and happy, to be truly free, to destroy fate, to romance Nephis, to uncover ancient history and more.

He was never an antihero, he was a bonafide villain in the first volume, killing to just possibly increase his chances of survival.

You are once again exaggerating, humans posses the power to unknowingly change their memories, try to read the second volume without any bias.

I don't understand why people like using the fact that he has done things he hadn't wanted to do, heres another example, you are in a saw trap, you have two options (A)Refuse to play and die (B)Play despite not wanting to.

Yes, he has insulted people, but, there are no definitely possible ways for him to be backlashed by them, he is after all the 4th strongest person alive, probably, besides, they are a great source of fun for both him and the readers.

      Mind explaining the 3rd spoiler.

Another exaggeration, besides he is not an edgelord, they are a different type of cringe instead of the one you wanted to use.

Fantasy: For me, this involves things like daemons, gods, nightmare spell, etc. What you mentioned about concrete information is more related to world-building in my view. As I said, the idea (fantasy) is good, but how it’s written (world-building) could be better.

Adventure: The issue with the fighting is that it happens in every arc. The author just fills every gap with fight scenes instead of focusing more on world-building. Remember that moment in the third nightmare when Nephis talked about her second? Instead of transporting us there for several chapters to witness things from her point of view, all we got was a summary. If you’re interested chp 1256, I wrote a comment there that goes into more details.

Romance: Agree to disagree. The constant descriptions of "city-toppling" beauty every time I see Cassie, Nephis, etc., feel like nothing more than attempts to meet a word count. I understood they were beautiful the first ten times he said it—please, no more. They can climb the same beauty mountain, but you have to differentiate because the person at the bottom is going to be different from the one at the top. In G3's case, if you take his descriptions from Vol 2 and Vol 7, strip away all but flowery language, you’ll be left with practically identical descriptions. "Toppling beauty" is just a complimentary from me, so don’t worry about it.

Character: His lesson that you can’t underestimate opponents came with him getting on chain islands, then in 2nd nightmare he underestimate Effie bcz she was small or something like that and almost got killed. I can’t—and won’t—read the second volume without bias because the first one exist. I got hooked on the Sunny from the first volume, not the second. If the author were to delete the first volume, sure. But as it stands, Nephis basically came in and overwrote 16 years of his values, experiences, and views in the few weeks it took them to get to the dark city. My point may not align with yours, but that’s how I saw and felt it.

i agree pretty much even though i love this book. The character thing is totally valid and it made me angry. Though it did feel a little good to see him have some more human characteristics like being embarrassed around someone he likes but yeah, it was overboard.

Ignore the ratings, this novel is S tier writing. There's some very vocal people who complain about this or that but ignore them.

This novel has action, horror, suspense, fantasy and so much more. If you like horror, tension and suspense, there's some arcs that really dial that up to 10.

Power system does takes a bit to understand, but there's some comments that explain it well.

Romance is just starting to manifest (chapter 1750+) and it's definitely not going to be your typical romance.
