With the rising tide of steam power and machinery, who can come close to being a Beyonder? Shrouded in the fog of history and darkness, who or what is the lurking evil that murmurs into our ears?

Waking up to be faced with a string of mysteries, Zhou Mingrui finds himself reincarnated as Klein Moretti in an alternate Victorian era world where he sees a world filled with machinery, cannons, dreadnoughts, airships, difference machines, as well as Potions, Divination, Hexes, Tarot Cards, Sealed Artifacts…

The Light continues to shine but mystery has never gone far. Follow Klein as he finds himself entangled with the Churches of the world — both orthodox and unorthodox — while he slowly develops newfound powers thanks to the Beyonder potions.

Like the corresponding tarot card, The Fool, which is numbered 0 — a number of unlimited potential — this is the legend of «The Fool». Collapse

don't scare me like that it's on his left

The monocle is on the left for us, but we are looking at the image in the face, so the right eye is to our left and vice versa.
So the monocle is still on the right eye

    Quote: LinnichG
Allow me to start by the end: This novel is definitely worth the read, very particularly for those writing light-novels, who could learn more than a point or two.

That being said, my review is divided in 4 parts: Settings - Characterization - Plot - Style.

The beginning itself was entirely a masterpiece. The author was very creative, both in style and settings. It's cultivation system was unique, and the plot was very well weaved. Honestly, it was very refreshing discovering this, among many novels that... stained the light-novel universe by either its simplicity, or vulgarity. And very particularly, the most surprising part, is that it was a West vs East style of fantasy novel; very unexpected was the fact that it was a C-LN, a Chinese novel. Not that I'm discriminating, of course, it was just that for those who've read a lot of C-LNs, this one is an utmost memorable one.

As I've said, the beginning was a masterpiece: in every and any point. However, the Mid-End deteriorate a little... One could even say that it was normal. I mean... the most difficult part of all novels, is to start and to end. The author did a wonderful job starting it, but the mid-end was slightly... less well-thought, or rushed. It can't be said that it was bad, it was simply disappointing that the novel couldn't sustain its masterpiece level throughout the whole journey. Still, compared to 95% of all light-novels... Well, I wouldn't do it, because that'd be very insulting for the Lord of Mysteries.

So, here's the summary of the Bad Points:

1- Power-fights: Honestly, the fighting scenes was probably the hardest part to read... because sometimes, the complexity is kinda... over-complicated for nothing. And that, made it a bit... tedious to follow at times.
Ex: The foreshadowing for settings was well pre-planned, and well-dosed; but for the fights, it was often overly complicated, and worst, interrupted by... out-of-blue explanations of why the powers worked in that way. (A bit... disruptive.)

2- Plot-weaving: While it starts as a REAL Masterwork, it ends only with: better than most. A bit disappointing... Why? Because at some point, the plot repeat and repeat, while we lose track of its original creativeness.
Ex: It was way more interesting, well-written, and captivating reading the MC's initial progression from Low Sequence Beyonder, to a High Sequence one.

3- Consistency: If Lord of Mysteries could have maintained its initial quality, it would have been doubtlessly the most well-written web-novel of all times... by very freaking far. Unfortunately, it wasn't able to preserve that... extremely high, initial quality. Ex: Beginning, everything was like a perfect, unique puzzle, that would fit, somehow, one with every others; and then, at the end, there were many... under-developed parts that should have been focused on, and other parts that should have been reduced.
Ex: I, as a reader, had initially attached a lot of importance and emotions toward Klein's family. It was beautiful to see the siblings help and grow toward each others. And then... poof! At some point, we totally lost track of them... It was like, a bit too sudden. Even when they had, somehow reappeared, it was a bit pointless and superficial. Besides, if there was a major plot-hole of a part in this novel... (spoiler warning) it was that, for example, those almost almighty quasi-gods could do almost everything one could never think of (stealing fate, mind reading, impersonating, etc.) ... but couldn't discover Mortal Klein's true ID, and exploiting its affection toward his family... when the dumber Leonard, had somehow managed to figure it out before everyone else... And that's not even talking about after Amon had, somehow, discovered about it... and then nothing ever happened... very un-amon-like.

4-Interactions: Lord of Mysteries totally lack a little bit of a certain aspect of the human interactions... Never thought I'd be saying this for a light-novel, but it was one of those times that I'd wished that the MC would have had some kind of... romance, with excellently portrayed gf candidates, like: Audrey, Evernight, or the Princess. I mean, I trust the good-taste and the writing style of this author, to have made Klein a bit more human-like. (As if a guy could have motivated himself to go through all that cultivation hassles, while never even being slightly attracted by a girl... At this point, even if Klein was gay, it would have humanized the character a bit more.) I trust that even if the author had written a small romance, it wouldn't have sunk like most of those junk-chinese-harem stories out there.

In any case, this novel is still—by very far—one of the most well-written light-novels out there. And my bad-mouthing is merely due to my highest expectations of hoping to put this one, at the very top of all those light-novels. It was something—realistically expectable—for such a talented Chinese writer. He, alone/along with few other Chinese writers (Mao Ni, or Gu Zhen Ren), had renewed my initial... very, very poor impressions, toward most superficially and terribly written Chinese light-novels that had junked our universe.

Well the way I see it RI can't hold a candle to any of them!!
I got Tired of RI around the time when MC and the bunch from eastern planes longevity heaven surrounded the Heaven overseeing tower, then the reinforcement of both sides came in and .....
        I stopped reading exactly here!!
Although it is supposed to be the most intense/exciting part of the arc, I f#cking got bored of it.
On the other hand, The Legendary Mechanic I have already read it twice, and have been pondering if I should read it for the 3rd time, or read The Lord of the mysteries for a second time.
There is simply no comparison, as they are not on the same level!!
Anyway, this is my personal opinion, written in a relatively moderate way. ^_^

Naah, I dropped it because he waits till the end to use his full power :3 , and then we have a stronger duke long, he should have just killed him, in the beginning, using his full power or cooperated with longevity heaven from start instead of hiding and waiting ? or using his travel gu to destroy all their fronts? since only duke long could have stopped him? or lured him into a trap to come out ??
There is so much he could have done/should have done, but he did nothing ??

i usually don't argue with people because everybody can have a different opinion but I hold a deep deep grudge against a bastard like you so please enlighten me on how they are the same, I have read Legendary mechanic till 500 chapters and It has no good villain that can even get me to stop yawning, MC is omniscient, every decision he makes is always correct and no one can compare to him, any plan he makes will be performed flawlessly with only minor problems, the power system couldn't be more generic or boring, even though the story is set in outer space the locations are all so stupidly Earth-like and boring... Lotm on the other hand has a smart but not godly smart MC. exciting mysteries and locations, villains like Adam, Ince Zangwill, Amon, etc. Its power system is literally next level, HOW TF CAN U COMPARE THE TWO??!!

Everybody don't be deceived by this cunning bastard, Lotm is a hundred times better than legendary mechanic, and even thought it's good if u expect to see something lotm level u WILL be disappointed

I love both of them but i'd say TLM is a bit lower on the quality of story-wise than LoTM tbh even though both of them have reveals LoTM has reveals all the way from the start to the end while TLM only has big reveals the last 200 chapters or so

That is true. If u describe LOTM's reveals as 'consistent,' then TLM's reveals would be 'bursts.'

I too had the same problem of not being able to get past 10 chapters. But then one day I decided that if I can't read this book then I am not a reader how can I admit defeat in front of a book. Books are meant to be read. I gotta say I don't regret it, this book has opened my eyes I never thought that the smallest of details can be so important, I can honestly say that I have never read a book more attentively than this. This book is the definition of small things sum up the big pic.

I have seen you from Paragon of Sin... tell me what did u think about the first 15 chapters of PoS??
or take most of the other novels as examples, a new world will always be tough to get into but just grit your teeth and read through it, if u genuinely like world-building and amazing power systems and the best character developments this is IT... after reading this, most novels started becoming poorly written in my opinion cause it raised my standard so high, just read this carefully and try to think about what happened in the chapter instead of binging through

Finally completed the novel, but rather than feeling happy I am feeling rather empty.

It was a great journey full of mysteries and horror giving me a lot of creepy feelings.

I read it in 6 months so no need to binge-read it. Read it slowly with the author's imagination and enjoy it because it is one of its kind.

Finally, friendly advice don't absolutely don't read the fandom of this novel. It will ruin your experience.
