With the rising tide of steam power and machinery, who can come close to being a Beyonder? Shrouded in the fog of history and darkness, who or what is the lurking evil that murmurs into our ears?

Waking up to be faced with a string of mysteries, Zhou Mingrui finds himself reincarnated as Klein Moretti in an alternate Victorian era world where he sees a world filled with machinery, cannons, dreadnoughts, airships, difference machines, as well as Potions, Divination, Hexes, Tarot Cards, Sealed Artifacts…

The Light continues to shine but mystery has never gone far. Follow Klein as he finds himself entangled with the Churches of the world — both orthodox and unorthodox — while he slowly develops newfound powers thanks to the Beyonder potions.

Like the corresponding tarot card, The Fool, which is numbered 0 — a number of unlimited potential — this is the legend of «The Fool». Collapse

Hello there, fellow brethern and followers of the Fool!

As a prime believer of God (you know, the Almighty), I would inquire you to give me some novels that are as dark as this one, in which hope may not even exist. Have anything in store?

Shrouded Seascape and Mutated Tao/Dao of the Bizarre Immortal are definition of"no hope worlds".
Project moon verse is not novels, but still fit.
My Longevity Simulation is abhorrent for anyone to live.
Deep Sea Embers is both very dark and very hopeful, depends.
The Bizarre Detective Agency turns from okay to live world to grimdark.
Struggling to Survive with Regression Power in the Primordial Saint Sect - the moment you step into cultivation path it's over(unless you have a cheat)
LOTM is not even that dark for 99 % of people living there.

I remember one but I forgot its name, author, mc name, everything. It's set in a dystopian world after apocalypse.

If you really like LOM and cuttlefish then there is Throne of Magical Arcana by this same author. It's much darker (in the start) as compared to this and is pretty similar as well.
Also, try reading Embers Ad Infinitum by the same author again, it's not dark per se, but it's like people don't exactly know whether they would survive the next winters or not (but then, in every community or society there are rich people)

I'm assuming you have read some of the more popular ones

Hey guys I am currently thinking of reading LOTM but since there is anime I thought I would first watch anime and then continue reading novel but in comment section of anime I heard many people saying that there are many scenes which are cut from the novel. I don't care I will read novel if some scenes are cut in anime so guys tell me should I start anime or novel?

They are honestly very different, for the first volume the book is very slow paced and slice of life While the anime is action packed. You can honestly do either then continue with the book since they are still the same story

Watch the anime first (at least as long there is only one season).
First of all it gives you a sneakpeek into their world without spoiling you that much.
It also makes it easier to picture their world and the elusive powers.
Also if you watch the anime after reading the novel, you may end up disappointed by the anime.
Watching the anime without reading the novel, will give you a plotline without many details, which reading the novel will then fill and you will make new connections you could not with the limited information provided by the anime.

That said, in this particular case it is also fine to start with the novel cause the anime is just very different...

‎So let me get this straight: we start with a Chinese otaku whose sense of selflessness is directly proportional to his phone battery and willingness to share dumplings with his imaginary girlfriend.

Then boom—transmigration hits, and suddenly he’s the second coming of Christ, ready to martyr himself for strangers on a foreign planet he doesn’t even recognize as Earth yet?

‎That’s not character growth. That’s a personality transplant.

‎And don’t tell me it’s the suicidal original Klein either. That guy had a completely different psychological profile. This isn’t a fusion—it’s a narrative hijack.

‎What’s worse, it’s not just him. Roselle, Franca, even Lumian—the sadistic prankster who gets his kicks from humiliating others—suddenly sprout halos and start waxing poetic about sacrifice and justice. It’s like every POV character got infected with the same moral virus.

‎I’ve never seen a bully’s redemption arc kick in before the guilt, trauma, or even basic self-awareness. Lumian turning selfless is especially rich. That’s like Joker substituting as Batman for a day so Bruce Wayne can visit his parents’ graves.

‎To put it gently: this isn’t character development. It’s authorial wish fulfillment duct-taped to a plot outline. And if this is the result of AI-assisted writing, then maybe the AI needs a firmware update—or the author needs to stop outsourcing their soul.

‎Let me put it in milder words to not be too offensive to the author.
‎Your writing sucks and you're a stupid imbecile relying on AI to write for you

What are you high on? Klein's past life was never explained in detail nor was Franca's or Roselle's. Klein is not a martyr. Did you miss the point where he ignore's global plot and focuses on his own survival? Franca is what she is. Roselle became father and we all know how he bahaved before that in his time through is diaries. As for Lumian, just cause he is a prankster does it mean he has no heart. Did you miss the part where author showed his feelings for that dumb friend of his? Go back and read again instead of skimming. Your comment shows you paid zero attention.

Same guy who praises Shadow Slave as if there aren't flaws within it. lts also funny as how you say Lotm was written with Ai considering it was being published in 2018. A little suggestion next time you use Ai to write for you, tell it not to overuse Em-dashes. It's clear as day that you haven't even read Lotm.

hello completed this webnovel , it was fun ride it went up from volume 3rd , especially volume 5 but from volume 3 it was good , i personally find it hard to read volume 1 and 2 but their ending was great so maybe it cancels out ,
if you are wanting to read this novel i would suggest you to get better at imagining cuz after reading 3 novels i still find this one hard to imagine fight scenes maybe its cuz of translation or maybe its just that hard
but if you have little bit of patience and likes slow burn , dark victorian era, can imagine very complex scenes this novel would be top the chart , i personally didnt find it best of the best but i can say thats because of me it was hard to understand complex fight scenes and its not just me you will realise many people are commenting the same that what is even happening and the other downside of this novel for me is- something will happen for 100s of chapter you will say why is mc even doing this and all . he will do many small matters that by the end of it will come together and merge as a big plot its good point but also negative because for a long time you wont even understand why is mc even doing these things i mean ofc the reason would be stated like for example he will go to cafe to stalk someone and it will happen for many chapters cuz he is in job but youll realise that that guy is believer of evil god that is planning to kill the whole world in hundereds of chapter later ( its not lore i just made it for example ), anyways 8 out of 10 main character is super super good many say he is boring but i find him very greattt . if you are a re reader i will say you dont have to worry about many negative things i stated

I read LOTM 2 years ago. Back then, I saw a lot of people rereading this novel and I couldnt understand why at all, especially when there are so many new ones to read. Im no expert nor i care to be, I just like stories and imagination. In my life i read a bunch of different fictions. For example, from Edgar Alan Poe, Stephen King, Ludovico Ariosto ecc., to japanese mangaka like Urasawa, Miura, Matsumoto ecc, to even niche stuff like korean and chinese webnovels, french and Italians comics or even hard books like russian literature. Well... Here I am rereading this masterpiece of fiction that not arguably rivals Tolkien's Magnum opus, the only book I ever read more then once in my life... Cheers to all new readers!

Making the next payment on your mortgage?, becoming rich and/or famous?, getting your dream job? Is Klein wholeheartedly pursuing a goal? Undoubtedly. Is it with the same dedication as Fang Yuan pursues his goals? Hard to say, as dedication to a goal is hardly a quantifiable quality. One could argue that Klein pursues his goals with a greater thirst, as he actually intends to accomplish them, as opposed to Fang Yuan's philosophy of pursuing his goals in spite of them most likely being impossible, as Fang Yuan values the process more than the goal and doesn't really care if he accomplishes what he set out to do as long as he does everything in his power to chase his ambitions.

Klein doesn't lack ruthlessness towards those he thinks deserve it. On multiple occasions he kills pirates in cold blood, unprovoked, but only those he believes have committed crimes that make them deserving of this treatment. He doesn't kill those he considers innocent, in part because the innocent never ended up having the things he couldn't go without. Sure, he could've been more ruthless at times, but doing so would've hardly been beneficial, and in some cases it would've been actively detrimental. So no, just because he isn't as ruthless as he can be doesn't mean he isn't doing everything he can.
Fang Yuan's entire approach to his goals is that he doesn't care as much about the destination as what , and how much he does to get there. Fang Yuan accepts his failures, as long as it's the best he could've done.
Do not make the mistake of assuming that just because Fang Yuan is determined and willing to subject himself and others to harm he is somehow guaranteed to succeed.

When is it ever said that Fang Yuan doesn't have moral values? Fang Yuan actually understands morality quite well, he just doesn't adhere to those principles himself, when it doesn't benefit him. If he didn't understand morality so well, he wouldn't be able to exploit it, like the numerous times he exploits it.
Klein, on the other hand, adheres to his moral code, even though his progress on the path up the sequences makes him more distant from the normal human he once was. Klein doesn't hesitate to kill when he has to (at least later on), but doesn't just arbitrarily kill those who committed no wrongdoing in his eyes and those he has no reason to.
My point being, neither Fang Yuan nor Klein Moretti are actually cold and unfeeling. Fang Yuan simply disregards all moral and emotional considerations unless following them brings him a greater benefit in that given situation, while Klein tries to adhere to the moral code he had when he was a mere mortal, even as his humanity dwindles.
