Earth, thousands of years after the apocalypse.

Countless technologies and advances had been lost to time as the Specters, horrifying beings with terrifying powers, arrived and destroyed the world.

Over the coming thousands of years, humanity had built itself up but always died again.

Nobody remembers the past.

Nobody remembers what humanity had once accomplished.

Now, everyone is living in a world where the Specters reign supreme.

-----

A boy with amnesia woke up in the middle of the Dregs, the worst part of Crimson Fungus City.

The boy grows up and manages to become strong enough to pass an exam for one of the most prestigious jobs in existence, a Zephyx Extractor, someone that can harvest the powers of Specters.

Sadly, he had already gained a power from a Specter in the past, which made him ineligible for the position.

But then, a mysterious man visits him.

And his luck finally turns around. Collapse

    (REVIEW DOES NOT CONTAIN SPOILERS)

Okay, I know exactly what the purpose of a review is, so I'll get straight to the point.

DO NOT read this novel if: You can't stand over-the-top drama, extreme violence, dense and tedious characters, a middling ending, discussions about ethics and morals, ethically questionable situations in general, overly descriptive writing with little subtext, barely acceptable descriptions of settings, characters, and objects, characters you like dying, you really like flashbacks and can't stand a story that doesn't use them, and, finally, if you really like romance and believe its presence is indispensable in any novel.

Read this novel if: You can tolerate all of the above and want to read an interesting story with good worldbuilding and spectacular main character development.

Now, I'll rate various aspects that are present in almost all novels. I'll start with the best of this book and end with the worst, using a scale of 0 to 100.

WORDBUILDiNG (9.5/10): I don't have much to comment on; the synopsis is quite decent. If I wanted to explain in detail the high rating in this section, you wouldn't need to read the book, since this review would contain so many spoilers that you'd be able to pass a 100-question quiz on the content of this novel. I'll just say that the plot develops very well and the world is coherent and well-rounded, with well-established rules, sufficient mystery and intrigue, and a final revelation. While it's consistent and ties up all the loose ends, I personally and subjectively didn't really like it; I would have preferred a different explanation. But that's just my taste. If, when you read a novel, you expect this section to be excellent, Kill the Sun will undoubtedly satisfy you.

PLOT (story development) (7.8): Very good. It develops naturally and progressively, at least during the first two-thirds of the novel. In the final third or so, the pace suddenly takes off like a rocket, and everything feels like a summary. It almost stops feeling like a novel and transforms into one of those history books that leave countless details out of its pages. Even so, that summary is quite good and still maintains its original essence thanks to the dialogue, but it's a shame the car pressed the accelerator like that. I think there could have been 1,000 extra chapters. Leaving the final plot aside, the pacing is well-managed, the time skips are well-used, and the development is constant, without unnecessary padding. Although, of course, there are no shortage of conveniences and plot holes, they are few and acceptable. Overall, very good. If it weren't for the final stretch, it would have a solid 8.5 or maybe more.

CHARACTERS (7.5/10): This book has a terrible problem. Its best character (one who has a development worthy of the gods due to his incredible coherence and high verisimilitude) is disliked by everyone! Of all the people who dropped the novel, I'm sure that half did so because of its protagonist, the other half did so in chapter 327. I've read so many reviews that say they liked the story, but that its protagonist was absolute garbage and because of that they couldn't continue reading. And, in my humble and honest opinion, highly biased and subjective, I exclaim and affirm that... These criticisms make no sense, they are totally wrong and baseless! All the critics, without exception, complain about the same thing. "The protagonist is dense and whiny, he's a terrible hypocrite and a shitty dictator." And, I have to say, they are absolutely right! But that's precisely what I don't understand! Why would that make the character bad? It only makes him dense, stupid, hypocritical, unpleasant, and contradictory, and that's precisely what makes him good! I think that because they simply don't like the protagonist, they dislike him, they confuse him with a bad character when he isn't. I'm willing to put my hand in the fire and defend tooth and nail that this character has a masterful development and construction, 10/10 without a doubt. I would like to write 100,000 words explaining the reason for my opinion, but if I did, my review would stop being called a review and change its name to "biography." Anyway, I can't ignore the facts: most people don't like the first half of the novel because of the protagonist, but from the second half onwards, when the protagonist undergoes an evolution, suddenly, almost everyone likes it a lot and calls it Peak. I liked the protagonist from the first line of chapter one, but oh well. Aside from Nick, the rest of the cast is a 6/10, what does this mean? which fulfills its purpose and is good, but nothing more. Aside from Wyntor, the rest of the characters have almost no development, except for 2 or 3, the rest don't receive much development. But that doesn't mean they're bad. In fact, I couldn't consider any of the characters in this novel to be bad; they just do their job, that's all. They remain in acceptable mediocrity, mainly because they have little exposure and we barely see their past. It's a shame that many people don't like their best character, and that their secondary characters are just okay, and that's it.

Use of Language ??/10 (writing quality): If this were my native language, I'd be confident enough to write a review that would make anyone cry, but this is written in English. If I were to criticize this section, the one who'd be left crying would be me when they discover I used a translator.

Miscellaneous points: This encompasses many categories; I'm doing it this way so I don't write 20 mini-categories of three paragraphs each. The fights are quite original and creative, especially at the beginning; later, they become more generic and, frankly, worse. The action is well-distributed, although I feel the story could have been better in this section. The power system is very good, simple but concise; I give it a very positive thumbs up. The plot armor is well-executed, not at all exaggerated; in fact, I'd say they should even give the nickname something more. The politics are well-executed; they're not the best in the universe, but they're quite good; they more than deliver. The beginning is what hooks you into the story, and the end is what makes a work memorable. This book has a spectacular first chapter, one of the best I've seen overall; it's definitely in my personal top 5. On the other hand, the ending... Meh, it delivers and that's it, but unlike the characters, it delivers poorly; it's disappointing. The edgy factor, in general, is justified and has a reason in the story; it doesn't feel like those books that add shady stuff just for the sake of it. In short, it has a good beginning and a fulfilling ending. A philosophical and emotional question, this is what makes a work transcend from simple fiction to something superior. The emotions the work evokes upon reading are considerable. Even those who didn't like it find it impossible to deny that they felt at least a little disgust and rejection. It fulfills this aspect very well. Philosophically, it's simple; the themes it covers are relatively deep but well-known, yet it still does a decent job.

I quite liked this novel, and it's worth reading. Even if you completely missed all the points (all the negative aspects are extremely important to you), I recommend you read it. Open your mind and swallow your shit. You'd probably rather do something else than continue reading, but in the end, you won't regret it, or so I hope.

7.8/10. I feel like it's a very good draft; if it were polished, it could reach 9/10.

(I apologize for any spelling errors resulting from the use of a translator) joy

I agree with you on everything, except for the part about the story needing more than 1,000 chapters. It’s very true that in the last 80–100 chapters, it was extremely noticeable that the author was basically skipping over and summarizing a lot of important or interesting things for the story. I know this for certain because I was one of those masochists reading this novel day by day (and by the way, I also wrote a review on the last chapter if anyone wants to take a look—obviously it contains many spoilers).

Even though I don’t agree that it needed more than 1,000 chapters, it certainly could have easily lasted at least another 150 chapters, and that’s being conservative. It’s a shame because, after looking into the author’s Discord, I found out that he had given Webnovel a deadline before starting the final arc, and unfortunately he couldn’t extend it further. Authors often do this so the story gets more visibility in Webnovel’s rankings. That’s why, if you notice, the story ended exactly on May 30 or 31, so that the following month Webnovel would give it significant exposure.

There are two or three more secondary characters that come to mind when you mentioned that Wyntor contributed more than just “doing his function,” who seem just as complete as he is. But I won’t comment on them because it would indirectly spoil things, and I really don’t want to do that. Besides, the protagonist spends large portions of the novel working alone, so other characters really don’t have much importance. Still, I mostly agree with you on that.

Your review is one of the most complete reviews I’ve read and quite accurate when it comes to evaluating this story without any spoilers. I’ll repeat it just in case: THIS STORY IS NOT FOR EVERYONE.

10/10 review and an excellent story if you really want something deep, tragic, and truly different to read. Enjoy the read, dear fellow readers.

I dropped after Ch. 327 like most of the people that have read this novel. The writing is okay, the world building is good, I basically liked everything about the novel except for the MC.
He's a crying, hypocrite, arrogant, stupid, idiotic little bitch.
Here are 3 nicknames I thought of, for the MC, while reading the novel:
Crown prince of delusion, cardboard hero and waste of ambition.
If you can handle an insufferable MC then go for it, but I could not handle this mf, it was to much for me evil
And don't get me wrong, I liked LITOW and SGIAWOM, and also the MCs, that's the reason I started reading this, but this MC is just annoying af

So this is my first Warmaisach novel and I have to say that it was roller coaster like journey. Fun & sad with it's ups and downs.

    1) The plot development & world background were absolutely the best. It's like apocalyptic type of LOTM where we have strong people instead of God's & we have Specters instead of powerful artifacts. Here humans live in despair and are cling onto hope that someday they will breakout from this horrors that specters have on their life and become free.

    2) MC development done by author is extreme. There were times when I felt that decision made by MC is totally ludicrous since no such human thinks like that. But future readers don't under any circumstances drop the novel. Just keep on going. In this novel MC character is not like Fang Yuan but quite the opposite of him. But MC actions to achieve his goals are opposite to his own ideals. So it's quite interesting to read such character personality for first time

    3) Side characters were also quite well developed. I was wishing that author had some other epilogues like

I've been reading this authors novels for about 2 years at this point. Consistently the chapters are high quality and contribute meaning to the overall story. One massive downside to the author's writing is that due to the high quality it leaves you always craving for more! I'm really looking forward to the new power system as in the authors last novel it was incredibly well planed out. As always thanks for a new masterpiece!
