Chen Ran is a good man; he went to Hell.

This is the Hell of Tongue-Ripping (a Buddhist hell for liars). Here, lying is forbidden, and as a result, everyone is engaging in deceit.

Due to conflicting philosophies on deceit, two great alliances were born:

The Liar-Killers Alliance: Lie, and you are instantly killed.

The Whisperer Alliance: Turn lies into truth.

A newbie tutorial with a nearly 100% mortality rate, an insane matchmaking mechanism, a feast of a hundred deceits, the war between the two alliances, and the Great Escape from Hell.

The villains who arrive in Hell will use every means possible to trick lies out of one another.

Chen Ran had many theories about Hell. Is it a virtual world? A world designed to create a God? A mental construct?

As he eliminates the answers one by one, the mysterious veil of Hell is slowly being lifted… Collapse

Daoist Inkdrunkwanderer's late review — The Eighteen Levels of Hell: Lying is Forbidden Here

Let me start with a warning:

If your idea of fun is watching an overpowered cultivator punch mountains apart, turn back now. This novel is not interested in your realm breakthroughs. It wants your brain.

The premise is deceptively simple. The protagonist dies and enters Hell, where survival depends on navigating increasingly complex games, schemes, deductions, and psychological traps. The twist? Lying is forbidden. Naturally, this creates a world where deception becomes more dangerous, creative, and terrifying than outright falsehoods.

The novel lives and dies by its mind games.

And for the most part, it succeeds.

The dungeon scenarios are long, intricate, and packed with deductions layered on top of deductions. Characters aren't simply trying to solve puzzles; they're trying to predict what everyone else believes the puzzle is. Truth becomes a weapon. Silence becomes a weapon. Even honesty becomes a weapon. hypno

It's the closest thing I've found to a full-length "intellectual battle" novel in quite some time. Another one is God's Imitator. That's also a good one.

What impressed me most is the cast.

The protagonist, Chen Ran, is undeniably brilliant, but he isn't surrounded by idiots whose sole purpose is to praise his intelligence. Most characters who survive long enough to matter are genuinely dangerous in their own right. They have agendas, ambitions, and are perfectly willing to throw each other under the bus if survival demands it. clap

Some of my favorite moments aren't even victories. They're simply watching intelligent people maneuver around one another like sharks circling blood in the water.

The worldbuilding is also surprisingly strong. The concept of Hell, the larger mysteries behind the trials, and the way truth and deception are woven into the setting all help the novel stand apart from the countless death-game stories floating around the genre.

That said, the novel is not without flaws.

The early arcs can feel clunky. The heavy reliance on Chinese mythology, folklore, and cultural references may leave some readers confused if they're unfamiliar with the source material. Certain dungeons drag on longer than necessary, occasionally drowning important deductions beneath layers of information that feel closer to padding than meaningful clues. old

There's also the occasional issue of logic.
Most of the schemes are clever, but every now and then the author presents a deduction or probability argument that sounds brilliant until you stop and think about it for a minute. Readers who enjoy dissecting logic puzzles may occasionally find themselves arguing with the novel rather than admiring it. emo_damage

    And perhaps the biggest hurdle:

You will feel stupid. goldenpoop yaranaikachu

Not because the novel is poorly explained, but because everyone inside it is constantly thinking, scheming, predicting, and counter-predicting. There were moments where I genuinely considered taking notes just to keep track of the moving parts. mmmk

Some readers will find that exhausting. Others will find it intoxicating.

For me, it's one of the most interesting hidden gems I've stumbled across in a long time. It's dense, ambitious, occasionally flawed, and absolutely overflowing with mind games.

If you enjoy deduction, psychological warfare, and intelligent characters trying to outplay one another, this is an easy recommendation.

Just don't expect the novel to hold your hand. Hell certainly won't.

    Chapter 405: Triple-Layer Simulation (2) (3-in-1 Chapter)
    My name is Chen Ran.

I am the author of the novel "The Eighteen Levels of Hell: Lying is Prohibited".

With the novel updated to this point, it might be nearing its end. Please prepare yourselves mentally.

The stats for this novel have always been poor. I only get around 120 urges for updates every day, which really makes it hard for me, the author, to persevere.

I've summarized the reasons for this failure.

    There are two points.

First: The author is terrible at naming things.

The book title isn't attractive enough to readers. Even if the website's algorithm pushes it, very few people click to read this novel. The cover is also a failure.

Second: The Novice Instance, with the Shepherd, Wolf, and Sheep, was overly convoluted and turned away many readers.

The author reads the comments section every day.
Regarding some questions from readers, let me give a unified response here.

First, some people think the author is a middle-aged man. Bullshit! The author just turned eighteen years and ninety-six months old.

Secondly, regarding the issue of one update per day.

My dear readers, actually you just need to click "urge for updates" more often. How could the author ever let my dear readers down?

Let alone two updates a day, even three updates a day is doable. Although this novel is a bit brain-burning and thinking of the plot makes the author scratch his head in frustration, as long as you dare to click, I dare to update.

Finally, regarding lies. The author has always believed that the most brilliant lie is not the Emotional Deception, Common Sense Deception, Affective Deception, Unknown Information Deception, or Deceiver's Tongue mentioned in the book.

Rather, it is how to deceive you, who are reading this novel—my dear readers.

    Back to the main topic.

The novel is about to end, and the two points summarized above are both secondary reasons.

    The main reason is...

If I am to continue writing, the author will have to start making up the subsequent plot.

No way, no way, nobody really thinks the previous plots were all made up by me, right?

    Those are my personal experiences!

You'll know after reading this chapter.

Yeah the full screen thing that when anywhere on the screen is clicked (including Next button) opens a new tab is really annoying but the in-text ads aren't that bad tbh, just get the Tabblock extension or something

    My personal take after Ch.127
This novel has a brilliant premise, but the author mistakes convolution for true genius. instead of mastering the art of deceptive simplicity, the story gets bogged down by unnecessary filler and forced, over complicated rules, once you look past the fluff, its clear the writing is just trying too hard to look smart rather than delivering actual depth

Everyone taste is different, but here are a few of my personal classics that I enjoyed.

For calculating protagonists and great world building, Warlock of the Magus World and legendary mechanic, another one I liked but haven't finished yet is legend of the great sage.
If you want stories where the environment forces MC to become ruthless or evil to survive, I recommend wasted spiritual root, suicide hunter, and kill the hero.
Hope you find something you like
