【The Isekai Version of Breaking Bad】

After transmigrating to this world and scraping by for many years, Leon finally realized that some paths, once taken, offer no way back. The stairway paved with countless white bones leads only to a throne—or to a grave.

Because the Imperial Church explicitly forbade it, the production and smuggling of mana extracted from magical beasts became a trade that was both perilous and immensely profitable. Thus, starting as an obscure nobody, he trained the witches wanted by the Church into his own monster handlers and apothecaries, and built a smuggling empire that spanned the continent.

Today, he is Viscount Arend—one of the most powerful lords of the Empire, a newly appointed cardinal of the Church, the Grand Inquisitor of the Inquisition, and a key supporter of the new emperor.

At the same time, in the shadows, the name Fenrir resounds throughout the underworld. He is the Empire’s most highly bountied fugitive, the most infamous blasphemer, and the most fearsome danger spoken of in whispers—countless witches singing his name in the dark.

Yet he still remembers the moment when the gears of fate first began to turn. Back then, he was merely Leon·Set, a low-level inquisitor muddling along at the bottom of the Church.

That day, he encountered a true witch for the first time. When he raised his gun and aimed it at her head, everything began with a single sentence that would alter the course of their lives:

“Miss Witch… would you be interested in making a deal with me?” Collapse

    Reviewed at ch160:

Solid fast food, the best in this batch (mainly because the others are just too bad). 3.5/5.

This novel definitely has it's problems, but I feel that many reviews are disliking this for the wrong reasons. For example many call the mc dumb, but I don't think he ever was introduced as some criminal 200iq mastermind. He is just a pretty average dude forced to take a criminal path who isn't even totally clear how the world works because of his low position.

Though I think some of the hate is justified, because the beginning of the story is misleading as to what content follows. This isn't really (mainly) a story about growing a criminal empire, but more like relationship/politics drama. Much of the story is spent on dialogues and navigating between commitments to different parties. Also the beginning of the story seems to promise a "sinking to corruption and misery", but later it's pretty much a feel-good story and no sacrifices or hard forced decisions are made.

I think my main complaint about the story is that the tension level isn't controlled properly. There are too many parts where the tension is pretty much lost, while the interactions or world building happening during those times aren't enough to justify that.

Also this seems to be turning into a harem story (which is taking too much space for my taste), so beware if you don't like that.

Edit at ch220: Probably dropping this soon, the harem-element takes too much space, and it often feels that the actual plot progress is just told pretty off-handedly. The story has now shifted into political maneuvering, but I feel like the style of story telling doesn't work very well. It's not engaging.

Busque la novela en Fenrir Translations, pero el nombre es diferente, porque si lo pongo igual no salé, el nombre de la novela en Fenrir este What Witch? A Deadly Apothecary!

Well I was expecting some copy of Breaking bad somehow but for the moment (chapter 116) you got some vibes yeah but it’s not without any work at all.

I find the novel very good it’s not boring I was expecting some chapters who were empty to filled the chapters but it’s not.. Right now I’m expecting one like that cause some interactions or moment are skipped because author judge it was not deserving a chapter so it’s okay to just write it in short to keep the reader in the storyline

Also I’m a strong opponent of things related to divinity/god in general in novels but it’s bearable for me for the moment.

I wish this author to continue because this novel has the potential to make something wonderful.

I didn’t expect anything special from a novel whose plot is based on a movie/TV series/another story. I understand this happens because the authors lack the necessary skills and are forced to borrow ideas from others… So how can one expect anything good from such writers?

But the plot intrigued me a little; I was hoping for a clever protagonist who, working for the Inquisition, would build his empire in the shadows while his witches worked as chemists. Instead, I got a foolish protagonist, a foolish plot, nothing dark or criminal (which should have been expected, given the storyline), and from the Inquisition you never expect anything good; they are essentially society’s refuse! But not here.

Overall, for me it’s just average reading, difficult for someone who has read many novels.

I agree with you on everything but the first bit. Writing or even just conceptualizing stories in other verses or with existing power systems is very fun and a good exercise for one's writing capabilities imo (as a writer)

I agree that this is a good starting point for aspiring authors to gain experience, but that's precisely why you shouldn't expect much from such stories.
It's not that I haven't seen good fanfiction or stories based on games, movies, etc. But they are extremely rare, not even 1%.

And, as already mentioned, this is only for beginners. If after three books an author still can't write a book with their own original plot (obviously, borrowing certain elements from other books is fine. No one is asking you to come up with a completely new idea. Coming up with a completely original and original idea is practically impossible), then this only proves that the author lacks writing talent. Unfortunately, not everyone has this gift; otherwise, the internet would be full of good novels, and I would be laughing in my sleep with joy, thinking about the existence of so many good books.

Honestly, it's pretty mediocre. The main character doesn't sell drugs that kill people, but rather medications that literally prolong life, performs good deeds, and saves those around him who find themselves in dire straits. Even a touch of darkness is mitigated by the fact that all of the protagonist's enemies are villains; by the end of 180 chapters, not a single positive or innocent character has been killed. The protagonist's narrative armor is so strong that, like Naruto, he can use dialogue to win people over to his side and command them without consequences, show everyone his face, and remain unnoticed in a medieval city with a population of 30,000-60,000. The protagonist's reincarnator intelligence is completely unimaginable—he's literally as dumb as a brick. Parts of the story drag heavily in places; I think if it were half as long, it would be more interesting.
