The most appearant issue for me or I could say me impression as a whole when I look at this story is a glaring criticize for the hero journey arch type story. of course it's unwise to do this because this particular arch type is one of the best. Though what happened recently is dealing with the hero journey arch type as a pattern with a lot of tritness.
So you see this kind of comment a lot "it is the same trope" " typical chinese novel" .. etc.
And what I mean by pattern is that you use it as a model and force the story in it, as a shape with a clear border you can't encrouch upon it and that in it self isn't a big problem the crime is that you can be this inflexible about the shape of arch type and forget it's content. Forget it's meaning. Essentially forget what makes a character into a hero.
As I see one of the most important component of a hero his beliefs which we don't find or find a superficial one, forced one, one with a shaky foundation.
Here the author doesn't explain enough why the mc has this belief but he has a strong instinct base which is the fear of death.
And what he is brilliant about is affirming this belief one time after one time after one time.
