Chapter 614: Summoning Contract |
“I just don’t know… compared to an A-level talent, what exactly is an S-level talent like…”
From the example of Themis-Russell, it could be seen that S-level talents were not innate, but rather something wizards achieved through later comprehension of Laws.
The prerequisite for talent advancement required a wizard, during the early stages of comprehending Laws, to choose a Law that aligned with their own talent. By using the power of that Law to compensate for the deficiencies in their talent, they could then complete the advancement.
Because of this, even though Janna had already comprehended a Law Seed of Purification, she had not rashly chosen to advance to a formal wizard. Instead, she planned to wait until the Law of Growth Fragment, which aligned with her Wizard Talent Natural Affinity, advanced into a Law Seed of Growth before considering advancement.
Of course, given Janna’s current ambitions, she was not satisfied with advancing through a single Law Seed of Growth alone. She intended to continue accumulating, choosing a more suitable opportunity—namely, to complete her advancement in one go after condensing a Law Seed of Spring Order.
“Judging from the current progress, the Law of Growth Fragment should soon advance into a Law Seed. As for the Fragment of the Law of Resurrection, since I comprehended it later, it will still take some time…”
“I can sign a contract with you.”
Just as Janna’s thoughts began to drift, the voice of the demon god Medusa suddenly sounded beside her ear.
Hearing this “reward,” Janna was first startled, then her heart was filled with a mixture of surprise, joy, and unease.
“That’s right. I remember that among humans, there should be a type of contract specifically directed toward demon gods.”
Upon hearing this, Janna’s first thought was Sacrificial Summoning.
Sacrificial Summoning was a summoning ritual where the summoner used items containing high energy or special properties, combined with intense mental energy, to randomly summon powerful beings from different planes across the universe.
Due to the unique nature of “mental energy,” Sacrificial Summoning had a high probability of summoning entities skilled in tempting the human heart—such as devils or demon gods from the Abyss.
However, those who summoned such beings often met tragic ends. Even if their wishes were fulfilled, it was usually in a twisted manner.
“But I still haven’t mastered the three countermeasures Teacher Tifa taught me. I can’t safely perform Sacrificial Summoning yet…”
The so-called countermeasures were the ones White Cat Tifa had taught not long ago: [Forced Repatriation], [Fate Concealment], and [Contract Transfer].
Since each of these techniques had an extremely high learning threshold, Janna had not truly mastered any of them yet.
Thus, after a brief moment of thought, Janna spoke somewhat uncertainly:
“As far as I know, if a summoner wishes to summon a deity as powerful as you, there are only two methods—Prayer Summoning and Sacrificial Summoning. And the only contract ritual I currently possess is Prayer Summoning…”
“Then we’ll use that.”
Janna had originally been thinking about how to persuade Medusa to choose Prayer Summoning instead of Sacrificial Summoning. Yet upon hearing Medusa agree almost without hesitation, Janna felt both pleasantly surprised and deeply relieved.
After all, compared to Sacrificial Summoning, Prayer Summoning was undoubtedly much safer and required a far smaller cost.
The target of Prayer Summoning required an existing connection with the summoner that satisfied the Law of Contracts.
This connection could be based on bloodline or emotion. In short, only higher beings who held goodwill toward the summoner could meet the contractual nature of Prayer Summoning. Unlike Sacrificial Summoning, it did not carry the risk of backlash against the summoner…
“When you mentioned Prayer Summoning just now, does it also require you to offer me sacrifices?”
Just as Janna was secretly rejoicing, Medusa’s question made her tense, yet she still answered truthfully.
“In that case, every time you summon me, offer me one Flesh Meteor… or… one Thread of Obsession.”
Thread of Obsession?
When Janna heard Medusa mention Flesh Meteor as a sacrifice, she was somewhat surprised, but since she had quite a number of them, she did not feel much reluctance.
However, when she heard the words “Thread of Obsession,” her eyes widened slightly.
“What? You disagree?”
“I agree.”
Although Janna was surprised that Medusa knew she could obtain Threads of Obsession, compared to the temptation of summoning a demon god whose strength rivaled that of the Outer Gods, it was a price she could fully accept.
“Although you’ve hidden it well, the scent of desire still seeps out from your soul.”
The scent of desire?
Hearing this, Janna suddenly realized that those who had been to the Sea of Desire would have their souls stained with what was called the “scent of desire.”
However, she was also curious as to why Medusa could perceive this “aura of desire” on her.
According to what she knew, “desire” was essentially a collection of various emotional energies. Even Janna, who possessed the Authority of Emotion, had not noticed anything unusual—yet Medusa had detected it with ease.
“Could it be that the demon god Medusa also controls the Law of Beauty?”
“I control the Law of Love, not the Law of Beauty.”
Janna, who had been silently pondering, froze for a moment when she heard Medusa’s sudden reply in her ear, followed by an indescribable sense of embarrassment.
“So… you’ve been able to hear my thoughts all along.”
“Of course. But only within this place.”
Hearing this, Janna quickly adjusted her mindset. After all, since encountering Medusa, she had not thought anything negative about her. Aside from a slight embarrassment, she did not feel particularly ashamed.
“As the most extreme form of energy within the Domain of Love, desire cannot escape my perception no matter how deeply it is hidden. However, there is one thing I find strange—how did someone like you obtain the Authority of Emotion?”
Hearing Medusa’s rather blunt words, Janna pressed her lips together. Yet in the end, she was unable to answer that question…
