The hearse with the weird odor slowed to a stop before the entrance. The sound of pebbles could be heard bouncing on the ceiling. There were footsteps coming from the corridor, and there seemed to be someone sawing next door.

The door knob to the room rattled slightly, and the faucet in the bathroom kept dripping even though it had been screwed shut. There was a rubber ball that rolled on its own underneath the bed. Wet footsteps started to surface one after another on the floor.

At 3 am, Chen Ge held a cleaver in his hand as he hid beside the room heater. The call he was trying to make was finally answered. «Landlord, is this what you meant by ‘the house can be a little crowded at night’‽» Collapse

Could somebody give me a rundown of the novel? characters and all. Spoilers are fine. Settings, mechanics, and rules that the novel has/runs on. I'd be very much appreciated. Thank you for reading this.

Been a while since I read it so some details may be off

Revolves around Chen Ge who is the owner of a haunted house which his missing parents left to him. Its located in a very old amusement park (local and small sized) that’s starting to get less and less popular meaning less traction for him too.

However that’s when he gets an app(forgot if it’s one or something else) which works kinda like a system. With it the novel functions as so, spoilers ahead.

Honestly would recommend the novel as in terms of horror and even writing it’s really good. The translation does get a bit iffy near the end but it isn’t breaking point level. Was a S grade novel for me and my personally favorite so may be a bit biased.

It doesn't take much time to determine if you'll enjoy this one or not. I recommend giving it a good read for a few chapters—maybe even 20–30. You'll get a bit of insight into the author, and surprisingly, the comments on this book are quite positive.

Reading this novel sometimes made me want to have a slow talk with ghosts

I've gotta say that the vocab in this novel is indeed something
Give a wide berth- to avoid
    Accost- approach
    Lambast-criticize
    At large- free
No skin off your back- not a big deal to you
    And so on

One of the best horror webnovels out there, and well deserving of its rank.

Overall, this story is absolutely fantastic.
-The writing is filled will tension, and will genuinely make you scared. I dont recommend reading it late at night if you're easily scared.
    - The world is very interesting and unique.
-The plot is skillfully interwoven and completely cohesive.
-The important characters are all well developed and highly satisfying and you can tell the author put his heart and soul into developing each and every scenario to be terrifying yet captivating and giving space for character development.
-Relatively little filler, most of which is the same quality as the main story

However, with all that said, the novel could have been a 9, were it not for a few issues.
-Most obviously, there are discarded plot points and loose ends everywhere. It doesnt hurt the story too much but it is quite noticeable.
-I dont know if its due to the author or translator, but the sub-rankings within 'Red Specter' are erratic and even now i still dont know if there are 2, 3, or 4 actual levels. There are times where specters are labeled one thing only for you to be told 200 chapters later that they're actually a rank below. There's one rank which is only for one character and another which seems to have been invented and discarded relatively quickly.
-The last arc, while good, seems to have been rushed.
-The latter chapters have a brief but significant dip in grammar and formatting for a bit and throughout the story it can be hard to differentiate a characters thoughts from their speech.

Chapters 1-700 are decent, but they get boring at times. angry_turd

The author suffers from the same issue as talentless cultivation writers: a super-scary enemy becomes nothing once the MC overcomes them or grows stronger. Here, the terrifying ghost turns into a low-IQ clown worker.

This keeps repeating, and the MC doesn't get stronger—he remains mortal, not even close to ghost-like.

The plot is stupid—how a living person convinces ghosts.

The MC is basically a more opportunist Naruto, always chatting and persuading with “Talk no Jutsu.”

You could say it's even worse; he'll always be mortal. Ugh! Without ghosts, he's nobody!
His enemies are more lifelike and relatable, sometimes even likable. But the MC is a hypocrite with Naruto's personality, painted principles, and created to please the author with lots of positive labels for society. All for social comparison!

The ghost theme isn't fully explored—zero explanation on how these ghosts can be persuaded by the MC if they shouldn't think.

I prefer conceptual ghosts like in “Mysterious Awakening,” not these clowns. The most interesting parts are when visitors go to the haunted house, just for the comedy.

Overall, the author can't write battles. They always create an enemy like a cockroach to bother us for dozens of chapters, then drop them, leaving irritation. The author doesn't detail power levels or abilities—it's all abstract.

The whole book happens around 2 cities! Like they're the world's center.

Much is copied from Chinese folklore and movies, no real mystique.

The MC is a righteous detective. He's not even a qualified opportunist, usually acting against his interests. And the “missing parents” trope is so annoying. If you want the MC an orphan, do it decisively, not “blah-blah for the plot.”

If the MC had a sister, a disabled brother, cruel parents, or cunning ones always seeking a bride for him, or relatives after money, a mysterious background—present that as part of the plot. Ugh! My mind recoils in disgust.

The author failed to satisfy readers per Maslow's hierarchy. The novel has a high rating only because of the “Horror” genre and slightly unusual setting. Also, the mortal MC helps readers quickly identify with him, but this becomes a drawback later, leaving bad feelings.

No romance, no women, no interactions or friendships—zero spiritual nourishment. No cool cheats or interesting MC abilities—all ghosts end the same. Enemies are generic, plot-driven. Nobody just exists beyond the plot trigger; someone's always scripted to pick fights with the MC.

No wealth—the MC remains a poor lower-class worker.

No emotionally touching moments to make me sad or cry.

    No sense of duty fulfilled.

Think about it: lots of horrible ghosts, but you're still nobody without subordinates.

Above average, but definitely not over 4+. Scary elements fade by chapter 150, and it's clear the MC, like Naruto, won't change much with “Talk no Jutsu.”

On the scale of reader interest and satisfaction, I rate 3.9 out of 5.

    4.6?? 👎👎👎👎👎👎👎♿
