Chapter 9: A Small Test

Zhiwei Technology's Emergency Response Team was a non-standing organization. Aside from the team leader, who had been Ji Yongsheng for the past few years, all team members were temporarily drafted.

When Ji Yongsheng invoked this title, it meant something major had happened at the company.

Seeing him adopt this posture, many who had originally felt somewhat uneasy in their hearts instead calmed down. They felt their own little matters weren't nearly significant enough to warrant such a grand production, and thus they also had the mind to size up others, speculating about who was about to face major misfortune.

Ji Yongsheng said, "President Gu, please give us an overview of the situation first."

"Alright." Gu Shiming cleared his throat and said, "Yesterday morning, Department Eight forwarded an eye-tracking analysis commission. After our engineer completed it using the company's standard analytical model, they double-checked it using a self-written algorithmic model. The conclusions drawn from these two analyses could be described as vastly different. In the end, the engineer compiled the report based on the conclusion from the second analysis."

"President Gu, that is a serious violation of the company's standard operating procedures. Which engineer did this?"

The speaker was the only woman in the meeting room, sitting directly opposite Yu Sheng and to the right of Song Jingyu. As she asked which engineer, her gaze had already landed on Wei Hongsi.

Wei Hongsi calmly met her gaze. This woman was very well-maintained. Past forty in age, yet she could pull off the appearance of someone just over thirty, though the necklace lines on her neck were difficult to conceal.

Gu Shiming continued, "This morning, Department Eight sent an additional commission from the same client, requesting an evaluation of the video advertisement's content. Our engineer used the CMS to perform three analyses. The conclusion is that this advertisement triggers several specific negative valence emotions in the viewer's subconscious, and the proportion of test subjects experiencing this situation is extremely high.

"The detailed data regarding the aforementioned two analysis commissions, as well as my and Department Two Director Yu's personal opinions on the second analysis commission, are all written in the report submitted to President Ji."

After finishing, he nodded towards Ji Yongsheng, not acknowledging that woman from start to finish.

Ji Yongsheng said, "The report submitted by President Gu will be shown to everyone later. First, I will go through the timeline of discovery with everyone."

"President Ji, I think if we're following the timeline, then adherence to operating procedures should be the top priority." The speaker was still that lady. Clearly, Gu Shiming's disregard had infuriated her.

"Also true." Ji Yongsheng nodded, glanced at a document beside his hand, then looked towards Wei Hongsi. "Engineer Wei, HR Department Director Ding Yafan has raised questions about your work procedures. Please explain."

Wei Hongsi stood up, first nodded towards Ji Yongsheng, then looked at Ding Yafan.

Ding Yafan saw this young man's expression was indifferent, and he didn't speak first either, seemingly not taking her seriously at all. He and Gu Shiming were practically like they were taught by the same master, inexplicably making one feel uncomfortable in their heart.

She coldly demanded, "Did you even receive your onboarding training? Using a self-written algorithmic model during work without authorization is a serious violation of regulations. Don't you know that?"

Wei Hongsi said, "My onboarding training assessment score was full marks. If Director Ding has doubts about this, you should first verify the relevant records in the HR department, not ask me."

Ding Yafan suppressed her anger, "Since that's the case, then you knowingly violated the rules!"

Wei Hongsi said, "People who violate operating procedures should all be knowingly violating them. Otherwise, it would be the HR department's dereliction of duty."

Ding Yafan nearly exploded with rage, her voice sharpening, "Is that what I'm asking? Why did you use your own written algorithmic model to process the client's commission, and even wrote the result into the report? Answer me!"

Wei Hongsi said, "Because the company's standard model gave a focal point dwell rate exceeding 70%. According to the operating procedures, I can question this conclusion and use other credible methods for verification."

"Deputy Director Ding might not understand what exceeding 70% signifies." Gu Shiming's voice came from above. He emphasized the word "Deputy" heavily. But when he said this, he did not look at Ding Yafan.

Yu Sheng smiled and said, "Director Ding, the optimal dwell rate for commercial advertisements is between 62% and 68%. Data at 70%+ is clearly abnormally high and can be classified as an anomaly."

Ding Yafan flushed crimson to her neck, momentarily at a loss for how to refute this.

"Can Engineer Wei using his own written algorithmic model for verification be considered a credible method? Even if the conclusion in your report is correct." The speaker was on Wei Hongsi's side, separated from Yu Sheng by one seat.

Ding Yafan, reminded, immediately raised her voice, "Your model hasn't undergone the company's review. It still constitutes a serious violation of regulations!"

Ji Yongsheng watched Wei Hongsi with great interest, "Engineer Wei, this is our Department Five Director, Mu Wei."

Wei Hongsi thought to himself, the senior brother sure has quite a few adversaries in the company. But aren't you all a bit too eager?

He was very clear that Ding Yafan and Mu Wei were targeting Gu Shiming. He was purely collateral damage, but he didn't care.

Whether forced or voluntary, since he had already stepped to the front, there was no reason to retreat. Otherwise, he'd be seen as a soft persimmon, something everyone would want to squeeze.

Moreover, these two people were truly not worth worrying about.

Ding Yafan clearly didn't understand the depth of the matter. Jumping out to target him had a strong flavor of personal grievance, likely purely to cause trouble for Gu Shiming. This also indicated she could only nitpick on these minor issues, lacking any real capability.

Mu Wei's purpose wasn't too clear, probably psychological imbalance like He Feng. Among the management present, Gu Shiming was the youngest but ranked first among the six general managers. It was normal for him to be envied.

But one thing was certain: Mu Wei was definitely going to face misfortune today because the Cognitive Mirroring System was managed and maintained by Department Five. Even if he wasn't involved in a crime, at the very least it was dereliction of duty. His director position was most likely untenable.

"The algorithmic model I wrote myself is based on the theory from my master's thesis." Wei Hongsi said unhurriedly, "That thesis has been published in the Journal of Cognitive Science and received a five-star recommendation."

The Journal of Cognitive Science was a core journal sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Cognitive Science, the most authoritative academic publication in the domestic cognitive science field.

Most of those present were industry insiders. They clearly understood this journal's standing in the industry. For Wei Hongsi to have published a paper there was already quite remarkable, let alone receiving a five-star recommendation.

Many thought to themselves, this young guy seemed to be a rather formidable talent.

Hearing the name of the CAS Institute of Cognitive Science, Mu Wei couldn't help but hesitate.

With the endorsement of a national-level scientific research institution, it indicated that Wei Hongsi's algorithmic model was, at least at the theoretical level, credible.

Although theory is theory and models are models, the former being a necessary but insufficient condition for the latter. But looking at that kid's confident and unafraid demeanor, he might just be waiting for him to continue questioning.

Ding Yafan was even more afraid to speak rashly, fearing she'd become a laughing stock again, and simply waited to see how others would refute him.
