Chapter 3192: Miraculous Soul

In the end, Snuggle stayed — for a few more days, according to her. She was recovering from the wounds received in the battle against the Great Beast splendidly, but somehow, she still seemed downcast.

“A Great Nightmare Creature back home. What a Nightmare!"

The shadow could hear her grumbling from time to time.

“How many of these horrors are out there, for me to slam into one right away? Brrr. Scary!"

Actually, a Great Beast was already a rarity in this era. The Age of Heroes was in full swing, after all. In fact, it had probably passed the halfway mark already, and the vague shape of the Golden Age — the Age of Humans — could already be seen far in the distance. The shadow wasn't quite sure, considering how rarely news of the outside world reached him.

There were still some Great abominations around, and even those who were far more powerful. But meeting one randomly was uncommon — it was just that the realm where the shadow dwelled was quite special in that regard, like a preserve for eldritch horrors.

That was because the heroes of the modern era had not gotten here yet, and the most powerful noble creature who resided in these lands — the shadow — did not feel inclined to go out of his way to battle these abominations. As long as they knew their place, he simply left them alone.

However, he did not feel the need to explain that to the downcast doll.

“What about you, Shadow? Do you clash with Great abominations often? Well... they would scare a Supreme Titan, I suppose.”

The shadow nodded.

“Not that often. And they don't scare me, indeed."

He remained silent for a moment, then added, wanting to appear more relatable:

"It's not like I don't get scared, though. One time, I watched Beast God kill and devour a Void Creature. That gave me a fright."

Snuggle hiccuped.

Somehow, the shadow got a sense that his attempt to seem relatable had not worked. Some time later, Snuggle asked in a timid tone:

"A—anyway. What do you do here for fun?"

The shadow had to contemplate her question.

'What is fun?'

Was it something he enjoyed doing? Eventually, he said:

"I like to sleep."

The little doll stared at him with her beady eyes. Then, she giggled.

“So we have something in common, after all!"

Since Snuggle was going to stay... for a few days... the shadow decided that she needed a place to rest. He didn't want to return to the temple, so he led her to the largest and most opulent structure in the city — the manor where its former lord had lived.

As they entered, Snuggle looked around.

"Is this your house?"

The shadow shrugged.

"All houses in this city are mine."

Around them, the shades of the servants and slaves were busy dusting the floors and performing other tasks needed for the upkeep of the large manor. Their presence seemed to make the little doll uncomfortable, so the shadow called them back into his soul.

"Choose whichever room you like."

Seemingly satisfied, Snuggle scampered away to explore the house. The shadow, meanwhile, followed an instinct and went into the kitchen.

There, he halted in confusion.

‘Why did I come here?'

The shadow had not eaten anything since the dawn of time, and Snuggle was a doll — even if there was a Transcendent soul within it, she still couldn't consume food. Needless to say, there was no food to be cooked in the ancient manor, anyway.

The shadow frowned.

‘I guess treating a guest to some food is just a habit I picked up in my countless lives.'

Tatal used to steal the offerings from his altar, as well. So, it felt strange not to offer Snuggle anything to eat.

Shaking his head, he returned to the foyer.

“Shadow! I'll take the master bedroom!"

A squeaky voice resounded from somewhere deeper in the manor. The shadow shrugged, indifferent to her choice. And that was how his kingdom got a second resident.

As far as residents went, Snuggle was clearly a failure — she did not pay any tax, went around brazenly illuminating the peaceful darkness, and was surprisingly loud despite her small stature.

Still, the shadow somehow found himself enjoying her company.

It was not unpleasant, at least.

So... perhaps that was fun.

Snuggle spent the first few days recovering from her wounds and replenishing her essence. Then, she went to explore the city. After that was done, she began slowly and carefully scouting out the surrounding lands, observing the Nightmare Creature that populated them from a distance.

The more she learned, the more dismayed she became.

“Another Tyrant... what the heck? Is this place really hell? No, there would be an abundance of Devils in hell, so if anything, this place is worse..."

After a while, feeling curious, the shadow finally asked:

“That day when you fought the Great Beast. How did you do it?"

Snuggle stared at him in confusion.

"Did what?"

The shadow sighed.

“I saw it. You weakened the sea of Corruption in his soul — you destroyed some of it, even. I've never seen anything like it."

After hesitating for a moment, he added:

“Destroying Corruption is the domain of death. It should be impossible to cleanse a living creature of Corruption without killing it."

He should know. After all, he was an emissary of death.

The little doll tilted her head a little.

“Oh, that? Well, it's simple. That's my Aspect."

The shadow frowned.

“Only humans have Aspects. You are not a human; you are a soul."

Snuggle raised her chin haughtily.

“So what? I'm a human soul!"

Then, she scaled the leg of a table he was sitting at like an experienced alpinist and sat down, her legs hanging from the edge.

"My Dormant Ability allows my soul to wander as a free spirit and animate various things. My Awakened Ability allows me to heal my own soul. My Ascended Ability allows me to infuse others with my essence to heal or empower them."

The shadow studied the radiant soul that shone within Snuggle.

‘The unusual potency of her essence must be the result of an Attribute, then — or even several of them, including a Divine Lineage. Quite a powerful combination.'

“What about your Transcendent Ability?"

Snuggle coughed in embarrassment.

“Oh... my Transformation, you mean? Well, it's very beautiful and splendid! It gives me a corporeal form. A very beautiful, very magnificent form! Way more majestic and impressive than this doll. However, I can only heal souls, not flesh... so, I don't use it often in this dire place."

She sighed, her shoulders falling.

“Plus, I have misplaced my real body. So, I don't even know how my Transformation would work if I were whole."

The shadow raised an eyebrow. From the sound of it, Snuggle had misplaced her real body some time ago — before she became a Transcendent, at least.

However, that was not very important to him.

“That still doesn't explain how you were able to destroy Corruption."

Snuggle raised her little hands and waved them in front of her beady eyes. The shadow observed her strange antics in silence.

“What are you doing?"

She lowered her hands.

“I'm blinking in confusion!"

The shadow took a deep breath, suppressing the desire to palm his face.

‘Right. She doesn't have eyelids, so why not?'

"What is so confusing about my question?"

Snuggle beamed.

“Well, didn't I already say it? I heal souls!"

He frowned, still unable to understand. Noticing his confusion, the little doll explained:

“Corruption infects souls, does it not? So I can heal souls from that infection, as well."

The shadow stared at her silently.

‘Corruption... is an infection.'

Her explanation was far too simple, but it made a strange kind of sense.

Corruption was indeed an unnatural state. It was the result of foreign influence — that of the Void — twisting and changing the souls of those who were born from the Flame. So, destroying Corruption could indeed be seen as restoring souls to their intended shape. Or, in other words, healing them.

Destruction, restoration... the words were different, but they meant the same thing.

It was a miraculous power, no doubt — especially considering how potent the essence of the radiant soul was, as well as the fact that it was infused with the Flame of Divinity. That attribute, after all, was the antithesis of the Void, and therefore of Corruption.

And since the wandering soul could heal itself, as well, she had to possess a truly fearsome resistance to being Corrupted. Which was not to say that she was completely immune to it. Even the shadow, who was far more powerful than her and a Shadow Creature to boot, was not immune to Corruption. There was no one in the world who could resist it fully — not even the gods...

No. There was one being.

Wasn't there?

“Anyway, why are you asking?"

The shadow shifted slightly, then looked at Snuggle.

“No reason. I was just curious, since I've never seen anything like it before... and I've seen a great deal of things."

He remained silent for a moment, then asked:

“So what are your plans? What do you want to achieve?"

The little doll had been cautiously exploring the outside world, so it seemed that she still harbored a desire to leave — or wanted to make sure that she had a way out, at least.

Snuggle looked away and swung her little feet a few times, in no hurry to answer. Eventually, she shrugged with a smile.

“I am not sure. All this time, I was just trying to survive. But... that's enough of a goal, I think."

She looked at him, her smile widening a little.

“That's because someone will come to rescue me, eventually. I just need to stay alive long enough for that person not to have wasted his time. He'd be quite disappointed to find me dead."

The shadow did not say anything, staring into the distance.

Somehow, an old memory surfaced from the depths of his mind.

He remembered a harrowing abyss full of impenetrable darkness, a narrow cliff, and a lantern that hung from the crossguard of a shattered sword.

And old bones illuminated by the light of the lantern, lying lonesomely amidst the darkness.

He sighed, not knowing why.

After remaining silent for a while, the shadow said:

"I hope you won't have to wait long."

    Chapter 3193: Regret Can
Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months.
It didn't take long for the fleeting soul to fully recover from its wounds. However, even after it had healed and replenished its essence, the little doll seemed in no hurry to leave the lightless kingdom that belonged to the shadow—it cautiously surveyed its surroundings, but made no attempt to enter the wider world beyond.
Perhaps because it was afraid. Huggie maintained a cheerful demeanor, but the shadow could tell that beneath its bright exterior lurked a deep well of dark emotions. It wasn't hard to understand—after all, it wouldn't encase itself in an unbreakable crystal without a reason.
In the real world, an unknown number of years had passed, but for Huggie, these events had happened only a few days ago. So it was unsurprising that it was in no hurry to embark on another traumatic adventure.
However, it seemed it had no compelling reason to do so. The wandering soul seemed convinced that one day in the future, someone would come for it—it believed in this person with all its heart, not allowing even the slightest shadow of doubt to enter its thoughts.
And if this were true, all it could do was remain alive and wait. At first, the shadow had frightened it, but now its company seemed to calm it. In this entire realm—or perhaps in any mortal world—there was no place safer than his. So why should it leave?
The shadow didn't mind its company.
Its slow, uneventful existence hadn't changed much. It was still vast and desireless, its consciousness spread across the silent expanses of its dark kingdom—devoid of life, devoid of light, inhabited only by a legion of silent shadows.
It's just that now, among the shadows, there lived a small doll. Shadow maintained the human form to keep her company, finding her antics a refreshing distraction from the crushing weight of eternity. He did little and rarely spoke, but the fleeting soul chattered for both.
He even doubted she knew how to remain silent at all. The small doll was a constant source of noise, not to mention light.
Shadow simply continued to call her Cuddle. She didn't seem to mind—and despite the budding bond of trust between them, she, too, was in no hurry to share her true name with him.
Names had power, after all, and especially True Names. In the hands of a powerful sorcerer, they could be someone's undoing... and in the hands of a being like Shadow, they could become a beacon for the deadly weapon of his Will.
The wandering soul seemed unaware of Will, but knew enough to keep its True Name a secret. This suited Shadow just fine, as he'd feel awkward calling the little doll anything but Cuddle.
Meanwhile, Cuddle had acquired an extremely strange habit...
    She began talking to shadows.
As the two of them walked the streets of the lifeless city, she was like a squeaky fountain of greetings.
    "Oh, hello, Mr. Miller!"
"What an unexpected meeting, Madam Sash!"
"Handsome Guard? What are you doing here? This isn't your usual patrol route!"
"Lady Hair! How was your day?"
The shadow of a mature matron with an elaborate headdress simply looked at her silently. Cuddle smiled.
"The usual, then! Well, I won't keep you. We'll chat later!" Shadow stared at Huggie in complete bewilderment, wondering if she'd lost her mind.
Noticing his gaze, she glanced in his direction and asked, "What?"
    Shadow paused for a moment.
"I just can't understand why you need to talk to them."
    Huggie shrugged.
"Why not? Who knows, maybe they'll answer one day."
    Shadow frowned in confusion.
"They won't. But even if they did, what do you think they'd say?"
Huggie raised one hand and rested her chin on it, seriously considering her answer.
Then she said, "Something like, 'Oh, my gods! A talking doll! Save yourself if you can!'"
Shadow blinked a couple of times.
He looked at the small doll, then at the shadows surrounding them.
    Finally, he nodded.
"That's a reasonable answer." Huggie burst into laughter and raced forward, forcing him to keep up.

Over time, it seemed she recognized everyone in the city. Huggie spent a good deal of time observing the lives of the silent shadows, occasionally questioning them about their actions. She was especially interested in the Transcendent Shadows—there were only a few of them in his kingdom, and they all held important positions. The city ruler, the high priest, the shaman...
Huggie was fascinated by each of them.
"Transcendent people... three of them, no less! Back home, such people were merely a theoretical concept. But these have achieved Transcendence naturally. What an achievement!"

    She sighed.
"I wonder what their Aspects were..."
Shadow studied her for a moment.
"Aren't you a Transcendent yourself? Or at least the soul of one."
    Hugpaw nodded.
"Yeah. But I only became a Transcendent after I came here. It kind of happened naturally when I was trying to survive the collapse of the First Kingdom. Things got pretty bad when the various priests and nobles started fighting for power... being just an Ascended didn't seem enough, so I had to step up."
    Shadow looked at her doubtfully.
"Countless people survived the fall of the First Kingdom, and most of them were ordinary people, not Ascended."
    Hugpaw laughed awkwardly.
"Yes, but... how can I put it... most people don't have an overwhelming urge to pry into other people's affairs, unlike me." Did you really think I'd stand by and do nothing while those priests and nobles were running amok, committing vile acts left and right?
    Shadow shrugged.
"I would have thought so, yes."
    Hugshy snorted.
"And weren't you the one who destroyed this entire city over a single human sacrifice?"
Shadow didn't know what to say. Finally, he simply said, "Yes."
More time passed as he and Hugshy slowly grew accustomed to each other. By this point, Shadow no longer found her conversations with the shadows surprising, considering them normal.
And this, in turn, prompted him to pay more attention to the shadows.
The more he studied the shadows, the heavier his heart became...
It was the weight of what he had done, slowly catching up with him. One day, as they strolled along the outer outskirts of the city, Hugsweet suddenly asked, her squeaky voice cautious:
"Hey, Shadow, do you... do you really have no regrets at all?"
Her gaze was directed at the shadows of farmers pretending to till the fields outside the city.
    Shadow hesitated.
Was he sorry? He wasn't sure. He wasn't sure he knew what regret was, or whether he was even capable of feeling it.
He also viewed life and death differently than mortals.
    Finally, he said:
"I regret nothing. Regret... is pointless. It's a wish directed toward the past, and therefore doomed to remain forever unfulfilled."
However, having said this, he paused for a moment and added:
"But... when I look to the future, I feel a reluctance to do anything like that ever again. It's the closest thing to regret I know." Huggie sighed and turned away from the fields.
"So you do think about the future sometimes."
    Shadow raised an eyebrow.
    "Of course, I think so."
He thought about the future constantly. Mostly about how there was always a future for him—for someone denied the right to end and become part of the past.
The thought made him feel tired.
Huggirl looked up at him and asked, her voice returning to its usual bright tone:
"So is there something you want to do in the future? Something you wish for?"
    Shadow smiled.
    "Something I wish for?"
He paused for a moment, then shook his head.
"Not exactly. I don't think I have any wishes left."
    Huggirl shook her head.
"No, no, that's not true! You just said you didn't want to destroy cities anymore. That's a wish too! So think about it. Think about it carefully! If nothing were holding you back, what would you want to do?" Shadow would have preferred not to answer, but something compelled him.
He looked at the shadows pretending to till the fields, lost in thought.
A feeling of serene melancholy slowly settled in his heart.
    Finally, he said,
"Well... actually, I think there is one thing."
Huggirl tugged at the hem of his tunic.
"What is it? Come on, tell me!" He sighed.
"You see... I am a creature of death. Everything I kill becomes a part of me. So, in a sense, my existence is like a dam blocking the entrance to the Shadow Realm. Because of me, countless shadows are doomed to never reach the Realm of Death—to remain forever within me. They are like a deep, dark lake, whose surface is still and still."
    Shadow paused for a moment.
"Long ago, I had a friend." She was a mortal woman, and I didn't want to part with her—so I offered to make her a part of my soul. But she refused... she said such an existence would be terribly sad. So she left, and we would never meet again.
Hugbear studied him with her gaze, then asked in her thin, squeaky voice:
"So you want to meet your friend?"
    Shadow shook his head.
"No. That's impossible. Even if I live forever, I'll never see her again. However... I destroyed this city because I was angry, and I was angry because its inhabitants defiled her memory."
He looked at his shadows, a hint of dejection hidden in his gaze.
"But wasn't destroying this city also a desecration of her memory? And wouldn't keeping these countless shadows trapped within me forever sadden her?"
    Shadow smiled sadly.
"I can't meet my friend again because she's in the past. I can't bring the city back to life either. However... I can still somehow free these shadows. It's the only thing I can do that belongs to the future."
    Hugkit bowed her head slightly.
"You want to free your shadows? Then let's do it! What's stopping you?"
    Shadow looked down, stunned.
He was simply thinking out loud. Truthfully, he'd never seriously considered freeing his shadows before.
How would he even do it?
    After a moment, he shrugged.
"I'm not entirely sure how to free them. I could absorb them... but then they'd still be a part of me. I guess I'd have to take them to the Shadow Realm—let the Shadow God deal with it."
Hugkit swallowed, but then seemed to regain her courage.
"So what?" If that's your only wish, let's knock on the Shadow God's door! We'll come and say, "Here, these are your clients. Sign for the delivery!"
    Shadow stared at her, puzzled.
    "It's... not that simple."
Hugbear waved her hands in the air.
    "Why not?"
He didn't know what to say.
"Well, first of all... I don't even know how to get to the Shadow Realm. We'll need a map, or better yet, a guide. Someone who knows the mortal worlds well and can lead us to the Hollow Mountains."
    Shadow frowned.
Even if they reached the Hollow Mountains, they'd have to traverse the Underworld and the Abyss. And then they'd have to enter the Shadow God's soul, which Shadow really didn't want.
    But perhaps, maybe...
Perhaps if he met the Shadow God, he might get some answers.
And yet, the very idea was insane.
Leave his peaceful kingdom? Plunge into the endless chaos of the mortal worlds? Overcome unknown dangers and voluntarily enter the Shadow Realm?
Why would he want that? Looking at Huggie, the shadow sighed.
"Listen. You don't seem to understand, but the world outside is full of things that even I, the Supreme Titan, can't easily deal with. There are powerful Creatures of Corruption, ancient deities, beings of Flame capable of tearing me to shreds with a single thought, and all manner of horrors. And let's not forget about humans! Humans are..."
But before he could finish, a strangled hiss suddenly escaped his mouth.
Because in the distance, the peaceful silence of his kingdom was suddenly shattered by a blinding explosion of pale, ethereal light.
The darkness that had shrouded this land for countless years was banished, and a small section of the city was suddenly exposed to the night sky.
Moonlight poured from the dark skies like a cascade, painting the lightless landscape a pale silver.
    "What the hell?"
Shadow turned in that direction, suppressing a searing pain. He frowned.
    "Who dared?"
    Hugpaw also turned.
Just then, a youthful, arrogant voice reached them from afar.
"Come out and face me, creature!"
Shadow frowned, then let out a heavy sigh.
    "Damn it."
It seemed the Age of Heroes had finally arrived in his lands. Some human fool had finally decided to come and disturb him.
"Today is the day you die!"
And this fool, it seemed, was particularly obnoxious.
"What kind of idiot would attack me in my own domain?"
As the shadow grimaced darkly and bent down to pick up Hug, the wind carried the supposed hero's voice back to them.
"...Because today is the day you met me, the Crimson Beast of Twilight!"
As if that weren't enough, the uninvited fool added:
"The greatest—and most beautiful—hero in all the mortal realms!"
