Chapter 3186: Lots of Fishes

“What purpose might you have in seeking me out?"

Mordret smiled faintly.

After countless years spent in the Nightmare, his past should have grown distant, erased from his memory by the passage of time and a torrent of new experiences — or at least eroded and chiseled away, becoming pale and faded. But he found it to be untrue.

Even now, he remembered his old life vividly. Perhaps it was because no matter how long he lived and how countless memories he accumulated, the first ones would always remain vivid and meaningful. After all, the importance of the foundation did not diminish the more floors one built — on the contrary, its nature shaped the rest of the building, no matter how towering.

His childhood spent by the Dreamspawn's side, his First Nightmare and shattering, his imprisonment and the blissful, but hollow existence in the Great Mirror... being taken away from the gorgeous mirage of his fake life and caged in his brother's soul, only to be forced to kill his brother later.

There were other memories, as well — the memories of the other part of himself he had killed.

Returning to the cold embrace of Clan Valor, being betrayed and spending long years locked in a mirror cell, the madness of the Kingdom of Hope, the ceaseless currents of the Great River, the bloodshed and violence of the war between the Sword and Song Domains, and everything that followed.

Those memories belonged to him thanks to Cassia, Song of the Fallen, so he felt indebted to her.

After all, they were all that remained of his dearest brother.

Cassie remained silent for a long while, her face obscured by the veil. Eventually, she sighed.

"I've been searching for something for a long time. However, it is hidden from me, as if obscured by fog. You are a master of fog... there is nothing you can't find, as long as it reflects light. So, I was hoping to conscript your help."

Mordret studied her for a few seconds. Song of the Fallen was one of the few living beings he shared a bond with. However, he did not fool himself into believing in her benevolence. There was a reason his brother had been wary of her... every word she spoke carried a hidden meaning, and everything she did was a part of an intricate scheme that even he could not glean. Those caught in the web of her lies could end up receiving incredible boons. However, they could meet a calamitous end as well. Her attention was both a blessing and a curse.

But...

There were very few things in the world he cared about.

He had nothing to lose — except time.

And time was cheap in this Nightmare. Mordret smiled faintly.

“It warms my heart to know that the lady thought of me, of all people, in her time of trouble. Ah, but a gentleman has to have a proper reason to act. So, even at the risk of sounding uncouth, I feel obliged to ask... what's in it for me?"

Cassie pointed to the carved bones scattered in front of her.

“How about I tell your fortune?"

Mordret chuckled.

“I am not interested in such things."

She sighed, then gathered the bones and picked up her bowl, hiding the coins in the folds of her tattered cloak.

“Let's make a deal, then. Help me find what I am looking for... and when the time comes, I will help you find what you are looking for."

Mordret raised an eyebrow.

“What is it that you think that I want to find?"

Cassie rose and rolled up the dusty rug. Facing him, she raised her head slightly. Then, she said:

“I don't think that even you know. So, I will help you to find out."

***

Years later, the two of them arrived in a realm infected by Corruption. It used to be peaceful once, with vast seas and a scattering of islands that brimmed with flowers and emerald grass. But now, peace was gone.

Far away, at the heart of the realm, its largest landmass had become a fountain of abhorrent Corruption. The waters were infected by abominations, as well. The humans who had called this land their home had either been swallowed by the spreading darkness or were forced to migrate to the edges of the realm over several generations, their lives full of hardships and constant fear.

Their champions had already perished in the battles against the endless torrent of abominations. Their kin from the neighboring realms were too busy fighting existential battles of their own to come to someone's help.

It was then that a blind oracle crossed the boundary of the infected realm, carrying a mirror wraith in her one remaining eye. Cassie put her bowl down near the well in a crowded village, hoping to hear the stories that the locals had to tell. However, people here were downtrodden and anxious, buckling under the weight of harsh life. None of them had money to spare, and even if some of them did, they only glanced at Cassie with distrust and suspicion.

Even after a few hours had passed, her bowl remained empty. She still learned a lot from encompassing the village with her senses, but it wasn't the same as becoming a foil vessel for the people to pour their worries and aspirations into.

Cassie sighed.

The goal of her search was hidden from her senses, and yet she felt that it was close. She knew that it was, in fact — Mordret had told her as much. His senses covered a vast area, after all, myriad reflections serving him as a myriad of eyes. He had been Cassie's guide for a long time, and now, they finally reached the end of the path. Suddenly, something fell into her bowl. It didn't sound like a coin, though.

Reaching forward, Cassie felt around the clay bowl and picked up a peculiar item. To her surprise, it was a piece of homemade candy wrapped in a thin cloth.

Raising her head, she faced her only client in this realm — a small boy, too young to lose even a single tooth, looking at the candy with a deep sense of regret and longing.

There was also a hint of hope hidden in the rhythm of his rapidly beating heart. He glanced at Cassie and hesitated for a moment.

"Do you tell fortunes, grandma?"

Cassie's face was hidden by a veil, her clothes were tattered and covered in dust, and she made a point of keeping her posture slightly bent, her steps and movements tentative and careful. She also used a wooden staff to support herself as she walked — so, it wasn't surprising that people assumed her to be an old woman. It was, in fact, an impression she meticulously created and maintained. Smiling behind the veil, she nodded. “Indeed. Are you interested in learning the secrets of fate, young man?"

The boy nodded eagerly.

“Yes! My daddy and the other daddies can't catch any fishes! Because their boats are broken. Daddy is always sad, and my tummy hurts without the fishes. When will my daddy smile at me again?"

Cassie remained silent for a long while, then quietly scattered the carved bones. The sea was teeming with abominations, so of course, the local fishermen had lost their boats. They were fortunate not to have lost their lives, really... but how long could they and their families survive without fishing? These people have lost their land, their roots, and the means of sustaining themselves. Even if Corruption and the abominable creatures it created did not kill them, starvation and destitution soon would.

So, the piece of candy the boy had given to the fortune teller must have been a real treasure for him.

Pretending to look at the bones, Cassie smiled behind her veil.

“Oh, my. Look at this!"

The boy glanced at the bones, his eyes widening in wonder.

Cassie pointed to one of them.

"Great fortune awaits, young man! Soon, there will be lots and lots of fishes. You daddy will smile all day, and your tummy won't hurt anymore. There will be a lot of candy, as well."

The boy smiled hesitantly.

"Really?"

Cassie nodded.

“Of course!"

His smile widened slowly.

“Really, really?"

Cassie gathered the bones.

“Really, really. Trust me — I've been telling fortunes for countless years."

She didn't lie to the boy. What she had told him would, most likely, come true.

Because Cassie was here. She had come to this realm pursuing selfish goals, but the sea of Corruption tormenting it stood in her way.

So, she was going to eradicate the Corruption and destroy its appalling spawn. She was going to cleanse this realm.

***

Finally, Cassie had reached her goal.

Having exhausted her power, she called upon the King of Nothing. And once the King of Nothing revealed himself, the sea of Corruption had no choice but to be destroyed.

Mordret did not command an army of vessels, and neither was he accompanied by powerful Reflections. All he had was a spear and an unbreakable will to see the adversary fall.

But he was a Supreme Titan, after all, as well as a wielder of a Divine Aspect and a descendant of War.

So, the abominations fell.

Following in his footsteps across a ravaged landscape, Cassie passed towering carcasses, splinters of obliterated trees, and pools of black blood so deep that one could drown in them. Eventually, she reached the slopes of a vast crater.

The abominable life spawned by Corruption was even thicker here, emanating waves of chilling, penetrating malevolence. It was so plentiful, in fact, that even Mordret found it difficult to cleave a path through its mass. Cassie hesitated, knowing that she had one more champion to call upon...

But hearing the echoes of his mad laughter and feeling the cold edge of a flawlessly white jade blade, she chose to keep that monster caged in her memory.

‘I'm almost there...’

In the end, Mordret fulfilled his part of the deal and guided her to the very bottom of the crater, where the source of all this Corruption was lying on the blackened soil. It was a single, radiant eye seeping with drops of golden ichor.

"Do not look into its depths."

Hearing her warning, Mordret frowned and averted his gaze.

Kneeling in front of the eye, Cassie trembled slightly.

'Finally, I've found it.'

It was the torn eye of a deity...

It was Weaver's eye.

The one that had been stolen by the Thieving Bird and drove it mad, infecting its soul with Corruption.

“What a ghastly thing”

Mordret's voice was quiet.

“What are you planning to do with it?"

Cassie hesitated for a few seconds.

“I am planning to make it mine."

He stared at her, a stunned expression on his face.

Then, he frowned and shook his head slightly.

“That doesn't sound like a good idea."

Despite the fear that held her in an iron grasp, Cassie forced out a pale smile.

“I've run out of good ideas countless years ago."

With that, she raised a hand and pulled her blindfold down.

Her one remaining eye was revealed, its radiant blue depths full of trepidation. The gaping wound in place where her other eye had been was revealed, as well.

Cassie remained motionless for a long while, then reached toward Weaver's eye with a trembling hand.

Picking it up between two fingers, she shuddered once more...

And then pushed the bloodied eye into her empty eye socket.

Moments later, a horrible scream shattered the sky above the deep crater.

Weaver's mask - Sunny's memory - has an enchantment called "Where's my Eye?" This enchantment allowed Sunny to view the strings of fate. Now, Sunny has a much higher affinity to fate and is able to sense the strings of fate pretty clearly because of Weaver's lineage.

Now, Cassie has found Weaver's eye. It undoubtedly contains an insane amount of corruption - perhaps a scene of the Forgotton God's fate is trapped within. If she can overcome or subvert the corruption, she'll be able to view the strings of fate.

Cassie has an affinity of sensing fate, not necessarily manipulating it. The Great Tear the fabric of fate was caused by the inevitable paradox of fate. Cassie was a tool of fate to break itself. She was fated to do what she did. Before the Great Tear she could sense the future and after the tear she collected memories of the past. Fate involves the past, present, and future of things, so her domain is to witness fate. And now, she'll be able to witness the strings of fate directly instead of through memories.

    Chapter 3188

The shadow stared at the tattered doll in complete incomprehension.

    It was all very peculiar.

Why was Snuggle suddenly moving and talking? The last time he checked, it had definitely been a mundane doll. The only unique thing about it was its unusual longevity.

Countless years had passed since Snuggle had been sewn. Entire kingdoms had been founded and collapsed, the bones of their rulers turning to dust. Humanity had endured the countless trials of prehistoric times and entered a new, enlightened era. The Age of Gods had even come to an end, but the ugly doll was still here.

Snuggle had already been close to four hundred years old by the time the shadow brought her to this cave, and more time had passed since then. At first, it had persevered because Tatal wanted it to ... and after Tatal died, it was because the shadow willed so.

But despite that, it had been a simple doll. Now, however...

Peering into the depths of the ugly thing, the shadow was blinded by the pure radiance of a brilliant soul.

Now, Snuggle seemed to have become a living being.

    She was a Transcendent Beast.

    The shadow frowned.

    ‘Since when?'
For a moment, he entertained the idea that Snuggle had somehow come to life. But, naturally, that was not the case. It was the light — the one he had been chasing for the last few days. The strange thing had turned out to be a naked soul that was somehow able to wander the world without a physical body, and now, it had hidden inside the ancient doll, using it as a vessel.
One reason for his inaction was that, despite having eradicated all life in this kingdom, the shadow felt a faint reluctance to kill anyone without cause.
Due to Snuggle's form, her attempts to run away looked very clumsy. The doll swayed and wobbled from side to side as she ran, raising her arms to keep her balance. Despite that, though... her speed was quite surprising. She was so quick that her hair, made out of coarse black fur, fluttered in the wind. Her crude dress rippled.

She had been kind, after all — unlike him. Suddenly, a mournful feeling welled inside the shadow's soul. He missed his friend... but, more than that, he was saddened by the understanding that Tatal would not have liked to see him the way he had become.
The shadow had never once considered this before.
He straightened and pulled his hand back, staring at the cowering doll with a distant expression.
The shadow threw one last look at the familiar form of Snuggle, then silently turned and walked away. Soon, his figure dissolved into the darkness.
A minute or two later, Snuggle carefully lowered the bell and peeked from behind it. Then, she hesitantly rose to her feet.
Her squeaky voice was full of surprise. Exhaling in relief, the crude doll then leaned on the bell and glanced around. After a few seconds, her voice resounded once more, full of trepidation:

    “But... where am I?"

    ***

The shadow dismissed his physical manifestation and returned to his usual state — passively observing his kingdom. All across it, countless shades began to move once more, simulating mundane actions of the living.

The people went about their business. The birds flew from branch to branch. The trees swayed, and the insects crawled in the mud. Shrouded by darkness, all of them were flawlessly black and silent.

However, their silence did not bring him peace anymore.

    The shadow felt lost.
He did not know what to do. He did not know who he was, who he had been... which was nothing new.

    There was no answer.

The shadow did not know what he would become, either. Without knowing who he had been and who he was, how could he? Letting out a sigh, he concentrated on the silent tranquility of his dark kingdom.

..Only it wasn't that silent or tranquil anymore.

A few hours after he had encountered the doll, she tentatively glanced out of the cave, turned her head this way and that, trembled, and quietly stepped out.

It was just that that silver bell she was dragging behind her caught on a stone and rang, its ringing spreading for many miles. Snuggle fell to her knees and covered her head with both hands.

    The shadow grimaced.

    ‘Insolent...'
The damn thing was walking around within him, after all, pouring luminous radiance everywhere she went. How was he supposed to ignore her?

The inky-black people were not really alive. They did all the things that living people were supposed to do, but it was all pretend. A peddler offered his customer fruit, and the customer tasted it... but he only brought the black fruit to his mouth, never biting into it. A young couple enjoyed a stroll, holding hands — but when they glanced at each other, there was only hollow indifference in their empty, glassy eyes. A worker was repairing a cracked wall, but there was no mortar in the bucket he used — instead, the wall mended itself as soon as he pretended to move his trowel.

The doll pressed herself against a wall and squeaked in a terrified voice:

“What... what kind of hell is this?"

Finally, the shadow's patience ran dry. Suddenly, a cold voice resounded from the darkness:

    “You're quite rude, aren't you?"

The doll shuddered and glanced around in panic, her beady eyes reflecting the soft radiance emanating from beneath the coarse fabric of her sewn body.

The shadow scoffed and added, his voice full of contempt:

“And you must not have been to many hells, either. My kingdom is very peaceful and serene. How can you compare it to hell?"

The doll tried to back away, but there was a wall behind her. She froze for a moment, then bravely raised the silver bell and put it in front of her.

"D—don't come near! Or I will ring it again!"

The shadow studied her, completely baffled.

After a while, he asked in an even tone:

“And what do you think will happen if you do?"

Snuggle hesitated, then asked in a voice

that sounded less and less confident with each word.

“Of course, it will... it will scare you away... like the last time?"

The shadow fell into silence once more. Then, cold laughter resounded from the darkness.

“Why would the ringing of my own bell scare me?"

    He shook his head mentally.

That doll did not seem particularly bright.

'Well, what did I expect? She's a mere Beast. It is already a miracle that she knows how to speak.'

Come to think of it, why was a mere Beast speaking?

He hesitated for a moment, and then added:

“And it is my bell. So you are not only rude, but also a thief. How untoward."

The doll froze for a moment, then squeaked:

“At least... at least I don't harass complete strangers wanting to snuggle! Who's untoward now, huh, you creepy demon?!"

    The shadow chuckled menacingly.

“First of all... I am not a Demon. I am a Titan."

The doll hiccuped and fell on her backside.

"Second of all — don't flatter yourself, little Beast. Snuggle is the name of the doll you stole."

The shadow fell silent for a moment.

"It belonged to a dear friend... so treat her with care."

For the first time, there was a tiny hint of emotion in his voice.

People forget that while Sunny has affinity to shadows and Nephis to light and fire, Cassie has affinity to fate, meaning she wields fate almost as much as Sunny wields shadows and Nephis fire. Sunny is Fated meaning fate manipulates him. Cassie manipulates fate.

"I'll start," Sunny said, both to show his sincerity and to reveal information about himself in a controlled manner.
    ...

"My attributes give me an affinity to shadows. I also have a slight affiliation to divinity. Lastly, I am prone to finding myself in unlikely situations."

    ...

Now it was their turn to share. After a short pause, Nephis spoke:

"My attributes give me an affinity to light and fire, as well as a strong affiliation to divinity. I have two Memories: a rope…"

    ...

    Meanwhile, Cassie sighed.

"It's my turn? Uh… my attributes are nothing special. I guess I have an affinity to revelations and fate. My Ability is like I told you before. It's not very useful..."

    Ch 37

Also, Cassie's aspect is of the sacred rank, just a level lower than Divine.

If Mordret had known what a nuisance she would become when first sensing her presence in the Night Temple, he would have made more of an effort to eliminate the oracle a few months later, when she returned to the Citadel with Sunless.

But now, he had to be wary of her potent divination powers. The painful ritual he had performed in Nether's tower was supposed to shield him from Cassia's gaze, among other things, but one never knew what a wielder of a Sacred Aspect was capable of.

oh really now...are you really sure there's no fate domain???

Quote: Chapter 3110: Gazing into the Abyss
As such, for all intents and purposes, Sunny was a unique existence now. He was a Supreme who drew power from two source elements in equal measure... and therefore, in theory, could rule two Domains.

He had no idea what a Fate Domain could look like, or how he was supposed to build it, but he already felt a profound change in his perception of the world.

Okay to be completely fair, this does outright state that sunny doesnt have a fate domain yet, but rather has the potential for one if he figures out how to build it. so we'd have to see him in a more lucid state in new chapters to see if he's realized any of that potential by this point in the story

I am so unbelievably lost as to where you got the idea that was Sunny building a Fate Domain, and not him remembering parts of his individual trial for the fifth nightmare. where he had to go through the lives and deaths of all his shades? I mean I guess it could be both?I dont know what passages in the text made you think that though, and would like to know what you have in mind as evidence

Source elements are the foundations/seeds for domains at saint level. And become domains at Supreme rank.
            Thus he has/commands two domains

Because at saint level they mention something called a nascent domains.

Domains are external manifestations of a supremes Authority over an Aspect of a source element(merger of source element and Aspect making them unique.)
Hence, factual at that point in time , as stated by Sunny himself,"he was a unique existence now."
But Shadow domain gets more screen time.

It is outright stated in the quote you cut short that it's still a theory that he could develop a Fate Domain, and he was already a Supreme by this point. Therefore, there must be some other requirement he hadn't met to fully realize a proper Fate Domain, and unless im forgetting something (totally possible), we haven't gotten confirmation on whether he has done that yet by this point in the story. Its totally possible G3 will hand us a cop-out, and just give Sunny a Fate Domain when/if he remembers himself, but theres just no basis in the text rn to claim Sunny off-screened developing his fate domain. If you have something to suggest otherwise id be happy to see it though, I totally could have forgotten lol

Well, Sunny was speaking from the lens of speculation not ground truth so in that moment facing something unfamiliar he said in theory because he is not sure himself since it's uncharted territory.

Btw your on to something, an Affirnity plus and Aspect creates a domain.
Shadow Affinity plus Shadow Slave Aspect = shadow domain.

Fate Affinity+ barely any Fate abilities(though weaving might be his Fate abilities though they are mostly passive) = passive domain.

On third thought he has Fate abilities.
Seeing strings of fate, touching them, so basically weaving is his only fate related ability thus still on.
Fate source element+ no fate aspect= theorical domain.
Though it might merge with shadow domain.

Well, you mentioned nascent domains right? A key part of natural ascension to Supremacy is building your nascent domain to a certain point before you do the whole act of defiance thing.
I believe that's because a nascent domain, even if the owner is a Supreme, needs to grow to a certain size before it can fully, like, coalesce into a full proper domain, and you cant be supreme without one. Once its a proper domain, you can get it as small as you like and it won't turn into a nascent one again, but a nascent one must grow to a certain size before it evolves and becomes a fully fleshed out domain that you can really say someone "has." Sunny might have somehow been accidentally gathering up whatever his forming fate domain has, but I dont think its gotten to a point that it has evolved into a full one

See I do agree with what you say that Sunny has the potential for a fate domain, but you deliver it in literally the most condescending, most annoying way possible

Ya know, he always makes a solid point.... even if it comes off as offensive half the time. It always boosts the conversation (like now), makes things interesting. I can't help but like the guy.

The internet is a fearsome jungle where everyone can say whatever they want. Just chill and remember you don't actually live in that jungle. So let em go crazy and go crazy yourself if yer inclined

yep. we are like Mordret who can only mirror what we see and have inside. would sunny be able to relate to a shade not in his domain?

so ask your self where is the hate I feel really coming from? is it coming from this Zion person who I don't really know or haven't seen? or is it my hate for myself because I understand and relate with what he/she is saying online?

Cassie did plan the whole thing from setting Mordret free to making Sunny fateless and still continues to bend fate to her will. Sunny has been more of a tool for Cassie to manipulate fate.

Bro, you're missing the point a bit. I don't know if you're just commenting to stir the pot, but the key tool here is Cassie. Sure, Sunny gets manipulated, but that only happens within the limits allowed by fate itself; without Weaver, it would be impossible for Cassie to achieve anything. You're talking as if she can influence fate all on her own, but that's not the case—you're dealing with sacred, divine attributes here. She was an MVP at Ariel's Tomb, sure, but I don't think they would've even survived without Sunny. Sunny was the real MVP—the guy who forgot everything to start over, the damn "Mad Prince." They worked together; she was able to manipulate him because Sunny—specifically the "Mad Prince" version with his memories—allowed it. She's 2D, Sunny is 3D, and Weaver is 4D; she's just one piece of the puzzle.

It meant fate (his fated attribute) is more active in that he's taken guided more by fate into extreme situations that mostly ends up benefiting him. Cassie on the other hand moves fate to her will.

If it was talking about fated then it would've said fated not something vague like fate. Sunny also directly compared his affinity to fate with Cassies, so it's definitely not talking about fated

Cassie does not have any kind of control over fate, she can only see it

True having a complete lineage maxes out yo affirnity stats from go
U start yo ascension journey with max affinity stats.
And Sunny was denied that wen blood weave ate shadow lineage.
Thus he had to grow his affinity as he ascended for child of shadows to Lord of shadows unlike Nephis .
Hence he hasn't Maxed out his Shadow Affirnity stats.

But the weave fully maxed out his Fate Affinity stats upon completion.

It's just that his Aspect doesn't have Fate abilities to better show and external express his Fate Affinity or domain to us.

So Fate Affinity is higher than shadow affinity but he has shadow Aspect and Abilities so he can use the Shadow Affirnity actively while maxed out Fate Affinity remains as a passive on the shelf

I don't think anyone has forgotten what each of the trio's affinities are, nor that Cassie's aspect is a sacred rank lol. You also missed that Sunny is considered the Third Paradox. Fate itself can't control Sunny anymore

And pray tell, who made the third paradox come to be? Sunny? Nop, it's Cassie who planned it all. She is exercising more control on fate than Sunny is, at least up to this point.

Hmm what I got from y'all conversations is that, fate is mostly a passive attribute to Sunny while to Cass it's mostly an active one, which leads me to think Cass is still at an advantage, and now she's more of a problem because of the new eye

That would be Weaver who made it all happen. Cassie has never directly interacted with Fate unlike Sunny. In fact she has been more of the toy to Fate and Weaver.

Also no one is really controlling Fate like you said right now man, not Cassie or Sunny because they are too weak regardless. Right now it's more of Fate not being able to control Sunny, when he gets stronger then he would be able to control Fate, to a much higher extent than Cassie ever will also.
