Chapter 2844: Sands of Time

The Longing Domain did not have a lot of time left... and yet, oddly enough, Sunny and Nephis had nothing to do at the moment. They had reached the Nightmare Desert in the early morning, with the radiant sun slowly climbing the vibrant azure expanse of the sky. The Tomb of Ariel loomed on the horizon, but it was impossible to reach it — no matter how long one walked across the white sands, it never drew closer.

They had never attempted to traverse the Nightmare Desert at night, though, when the two cursed armies turned it into a deadly battlefield.

Sunny and Nephis both believed that the Tomb of Ariel could only be reached at night, so for now, all they could do was wait.

This was probably the last day of peace they would know for a while. The Nightmare Desert was vast, and even if their theory proved to be correct, it was going to take a lot of time to reach its heart — days, weeks more likely. Especially so because they would be fighting their way through a vast horde of undying beings who had been cursed by Shadow God to an eternity of endless war.

Shadow God had been quite a merciless one, it seemed. After all, he had not only cursed the army that fought under the banner of the rebellious daemons... his curse befell the warriors of the Divine Host, as well, making no distinction between friend or foe.

But what else would Sunny expect from the God of Death?

He and Nephis remained aboard the Chain Breaker, watching the desert silently. Growing tired of the heat, they retreated into the captain's cabin of the flying ship. Sunny remembered how the two of them had slept here during their journey to Fallen Grace...

Nephis, of course, did not.

There was probably something useful they could do until the night fell, like meditating to clear their minds or going over the battle plan a few more times. But neither of them wanted to waste their last day of peace on rote tedium. After all, there was a real chance that they would not return from this expedition alive... or at least that both of them would.

They were painfully aware of each other's presence, which filled the cabin with a heated pressure.

Neph's presence ignited Sunny's longing, and her Aspect allowed her to sense the flame of his desire.

A light touch turned into a kiss, and a kiss turned into something more.

In the end, they used the remaining time until nightfall to indulge themselves, engaged in passion and engrossed in each other with fervour and intensity that were as deliberate as they were frenetic, putting the sturdiness of the Chain Breaker to the test. Eventually, overcome by a sweet exhaustion, they cuddled on the sweaty sheets to rest and recover.

Sunny was reminded of what Effie had said to him once... that when one was facing death, they wanted to feel alive more than ever.

He was looking at the ceiling of the cabin, his thoughts moving slowly.

His mind drifted to the last time he and Nephis had spent time together in this cabin, and then to the future.

Soon, they would invade the Nightmare Desert. If they survived that, they would enter the Tomb of Ariel. If they were to survive that, as well, they would face the Vile Thieving Bird in battle.

And if they survived that, too, Sunny would most likely regain his fate.

That meant regaining his True Name, surrendering to the Shadow Bond once again, becoming a carrier of the Nightmare Spell for the second time, restoring his ability to challenge the Fifth Nightmare... And, most importantly, it meant that Sunny would be remembered.

That was something he had wanted for the longest time, and at times with desperate intensity. He had spent years unsure and not knowing what to do, only recently deciding that he did not want to be forgotten anymore.

That he wanted to be remembered by the people he held dear once again.

But now that the prospect of being remembered ceased to be a merely theoretical possibility and seemed to be within his grasp, Sunny suddenly found himself afraid.

Yes, people would regain their memories of him. Nephis would know what they had endured on the Forgotten Shore together and why she stayed behind in the collapsing Crimson Spire. She would remember how they slept in this very cabin as the Great River carried the Chain Breaker downstream, into the past.

She would know that this was not the first time the two of them had come to the Nightmare Desert together.

However...

She would also remember how Sunny had abandoned her in Verge to face the First Seeker alone. How he had run away to fulfill his own selfish, misguided desire.

She would remember his betrayal.

A heavy sigh escaped from his lips.

How would Nephis react if she remembered him?

Would she be happy? Would she be angry? Would she slap him across the face, perhaps, full of scathing accusations?

Or would she kiss and embrace him instead? Most of all...

Would their fragile relationship survive that revelation?

This closeness between them had not come easily. Sunny had worked tirelessly to build it, even if the foundation on which he was building it was missing. He often felt unsatisfied and saddened by the fact that the relationship between him and Nephis, while intimate and harmonious, did not run that deep.

But now that there was a possibility that their peculiar relationship would end, he found himself treasuring it immensely.

He didn't want to lose what they had now. He was already happy with what they had now. He was content...

But he was also greedy, and wanted more. So much more.

“You're thinking greedy thoughts again."

Nephis was playing with a stand of his hair, letting the black silk of it run between her fingers.

She smiled faintly.

"Your eyes glisten a certain way when you do."

Sunny turned his head and glanced at her silently.

She looked into his eyes, no space between them.

In the end, she turned away and sighed.

“I know every inch of you by heart. But I also don't know anything about you. It's so vexing."

He remained silent for a bit, then hugged her from behind and drew her closer.

What was he supposed to say?

‘It won't be for much longer. Soon... you'll know everything about me soon, once again.'

That was what he wanted to tell her.

But instead of saying these words aloud, Sunny smiled.

“I'm not too tall. So, there aren't that many inches of me, to begin with. Still, quite impressive..."

Nephis laughed quietly.

Soon, the brilliant sun melted into the dark horizon.

Their time of peace had run out.

needless to say the realization will be devastating and the betrayal will hurt after she did everything in her power to accommodate to shadow bond. but even she knew that nothing she could've done would've been enough, she will eventually understand why sunny did what he did although she has every right to be more than angry at him. but yeah she for sure loves him more than anything so she'll probably forgive him eventually.

damm they grow up so fast, sunny used to only think about his survival didn't understood his emotions same goes for nephis, but it feels like I am listenning to a man conveying his thoughts, same thing I felt for thorfinn in vinland saga

g3 really did a good job conveying both the perspective of a boy and a man, believe me its hard to do that so naturally...

also how come nobody is talking about title am I the only one who played POP

I'm sure that after Sunny is remembered, g3 will find a way to separate Sunny and Nephis; he loves doing that. It was like that after they arrived at the dark city, it was like that when they destroyed the crimson pinnacle, it was like that when Nephis returned from the nightmare, and it was like that after the third nightmare where he was forgotten.

I doubt. G3 is not stupid. If he does seperate sunny and neph we would be happy and all but if the readers are satisfied they lose intrest so he will keep the tension, the little imperfection in their relationship, these imperfections lead to great story. So to gain something he'll have to lose something, but only this time he is not forced to lose but he's willingly letting that freedom go.

    So here me out
If he gets his fate back that doesn't mean the mess they created on tapestry of fate will heal. So I think people will not actually suddenly remember him but instead, if sunny suddenly says things about his past people will not forget that conversation.

I really hope G3 eventually does something about this Shadow Bond situation.

First of all, after so many volumes, it feels like neither I nor even the author fully understands what it actually is. The wiki describes it as part of an Aspect, but I honestly don’t recall anyone else having anything comparable to a second “flow”. The Bond doesn’t seem to provide any real advantages. There are no meaningful buffs for having a strong or capable master. It just feels like a second flaw for shits and giggles.

Secondly, comparisons to marriage or arguments that “it’s fine because it’s voluntary” don’t convince me one bit. A better comparison would be the Summer Knight and his oath to the King of Swords. At the time, he believed he was making a fair and honorable choice, trusting completely in the one he swore himself to. But that trust was later betrayed. Most reasonable people would agree that such an oath should be broken once it becomes unjust, and that there’s no honor in blindly upholding it under those circumstances. Yet because of his flaw, he is now forced to continue acting against his own will for the rest of his life. The same logic applies elsewhere. Imagine if Effie had a shadow bond with her husband — their son would likely already be in Asterion’s hands, and she herself would end up brain washed by Dreamspawn. Trust is important, but things happen: manipulation, coercion, even mind control. And Nephis is not a saint either. She tries to be good, yes, but she has already expressed a few “non-negotiable” desires. How long will Sunny continue agreeing with everything she decides?

In short, I really hope this Bond gets erased somehow — through Weaver’s power, a daemon magic, Oblivion, whatever. Give us a dramatic scene where Nephis releases the leash, they stand as equals, and walk into the sunset as gods side by side. That would feel earned, and it would be sooo unhealthy otherwise.

In that case, one must ask, what is slavery for a god? What does it mean to be dependent on a being capable of extending "oneself" across the entire world? It's quite possible that the shadow was a slave in a slightly different sense. It's quite possible that his "master" wasn't just one god, but the entirety of them. They dictated the rules, created the universe, and the shadow adapted, patched up the holes, and devised repairs, just as he devised Death. His slavery wasn't a lack of will or freedom, but rather a support role for the other gods. After all, his key Concept, the shadow, is directly dependent on whatever sends it forth, be it a person, an animal, or an object.

Shadow Bond is actually has it's boon, it will unite 2 person's aspect into 1. We have seen it's potential in Sunphis vs Dire Fang(?) kinda forgot his name, it combine neph and Sunny's buff making Sunny strong af, while neph vulnerable. And even so it's quite decent.
If u play games u should ve know that 2 different type buffs is better than 2 same buffs.
Say ur attack is 100 it get 50% atk buff and 50% dmg increase. Ur final result isn't 100+100%=200 dmg, but 100+50% =150+50% =225.

After becoming a shadow its saver for Sunny because he no longer have a body, he can fully buff Nephis without being vulnerable. Imagine Nephis can manifest 7 of herself, strengthen herself 7times, double her Essence, double her Will, and use any ability Sunny have like shadow step and shadow manipulation while keeping her own aspect. It literally makes the master of Shadow Bond a stronger version of Sunny.

But yeah the demerit of losing your freedom far outweigh the benefits.

Personally I prefer if Sunny got a new True name after gaining his fate. I put my hope on the true name that Torment and Cassie input into the light staff that guide Sunny into Oblivion. Imo it's holding Oblivion's True name is unlikely because it was inputted by Cassie, Saint Cassie at best, she barely knows Oblivion exists, let alone his true name a divine titan. VTB's true name is also unlikely because its history isn't recorded anywhere in . So I put my faith on the third person in that place, Supreme/Sacred Shadow of Sunny. and since it didn't confuse that name with Saint Sunny I assume it's not lost from light

"I got that idea, actually, after we saw Devouring Beast. The Guiding Light only points to Effie, and not her. That is strange, considering that they are the same person. Only… I think that once somebody becomes Corrupted, their very nature start to change. So, they lose their True Name, or maybe it changes as well."

Nah, Im not convinced it's VTB's true name

If you are curious about my story lemme give you rough idea about what it is :
So basically my story is nothing but what happened in my life…as I will write my entire life with exception of some events because if the world got to know them I will be quite vulnerable to them.
