Chapter 2760: Soul Devourers

Nephs studied Asterion for a few moments, then continued in an even tone:

"In truth, you do not really want our Citadels. You do not want to rule humanity or conquer both worlds, either. All you want is... to grow. All you want is to use the Human Domain as fertilizer for your growth. Ah, I've never felt a more abominable hunger."

Asterion met her gaze with a nonchalant smile.

“So you knew what I wanted all along, but still went to the trouble of asking three times? All that just to refuse me..."

He sighed.

"This is the problem with those who were nurtured by the Nightmare Spell. Your power is exceptional, but you are too militant. You are too used to solving problems with a sharp sword, so no one knows the value of good negotiations."

Smiling faintly, he shook his head.

"Still. You are only reluctant to strike a deal with me because you are under the illusion that there is a different choice. Your mind will change once you taste true despair... of course, by then, I won't be offering such reasonable terms."

Sunny scoffed.

"I was right. You really do like the sound of your own voice... well, no surprise. You are quite eloquent, after all. However, I could not help but notice your peculiar choice of words earlier. What was it? We'll get to live the rest of our lives in peace if we agree?" He gave Asterion an unamused look.

"You forgot to mention that the rest of our lives would not amount to much, didn't you? A handful of years, at best. Goodness, something tells me that you are not approaching this supposed deal in good faith."

He turned to Nephis.

"Actually, I figured out what this lunatic wants already. He is aiming for natural Apotheosis... maybe unnatural is a more fitting word in this case, though. He wants to achieve what Kanakht failed to achieve and attain godhood through feeding on his own Domain — not as a human, but as a creature. In short, he wants to enthrall all of humanity, then devour it."

Turning to Asterion, Sunny added in a dark tone:

“What a guy."

In response, Asterion gave him an amused look.

“You figured me out so quickly? My, my... I guess you did not become Supreme by accident, after all."

His tone was friendly and easygoing, not at all fitting the hideous darkness of his genocidal intent.

A heavy silence hung in the air, overflowing with tension.

An unexpected sound then suddenly broke the silence, surprising both Sunny and Asterion.

It was the sound of laughter.

Nephis was laughing... her laugh was dry and joyless, but she was laughing nonetheless.

"So, that's it?"

She looked at Asterion, her eyes full of contempt.

"That is all the great and terrible Asterion amounts to? All these years of waiting, the ominous mystery surrounding you, the fear of you everyone seems to share... and in the end, you are no different from the other two."

His smile dimmed a little.

"Ouch. That was uncalled for."

Nephis, meanwhile, gritted her teeth.

"All of this because you're just another cowardly deserter who is afraid to challenge the Fifth Nightmare."

Her eyes blazed with white flames.

"Anvil and Ki Song convinced themselves that they could not abandon the waking world or risk leaving humanity without the guardianship of Supremes. But you don't care about the waking world or humanity. So, what is your excuse?"

Asterioh met her fiery gaze with a relaxed smile.

"Why do I need an excuse?"

He looked at her, then shifted his gaze to Sunny in confusion.

"And why do I need to gamble my life away in the Fifth Nightmare when there is a safer, better way to become a deity?"

Sunny exhaled slowly.

"Why? Oh, I'm not sure... has it ever occurred to you that consuming the souls of countless humans — of all humans — is the vilest, most appalling way of attaining godhood one can imagine, perhaps?" Asterion raised an eyebrow.

"Really? Remind me, please... how was it that you two became Supreme Titans? Was it through pacifism and natural enlightenment, maybe? Or was it through murder, slaughter, and bloodshed?"

He shook his head.

"How many souls have the two of you consumed to get to where you are?"

Sunny scowled deeply.

"Too many, perhaps. However, are you really comparing the souls of Nightmare Creatures to those of humans?"

Asterion laughed.

"Oh, and you two have never killed humans? The piles of corpses left in Godgrave tend to disagree. And even then, is there really such a difference? You treat Nightmare Creature as if they do not count. But they are living creatures, too... most of them are beasts, but many are just as sentient as you and I. It's just that their sentience differs from your own, so you don't feel the need to extend them the courtesy of counting them as individuals."

Sunny stared at the Dreamspawn, feeling dizzy.

He really could not tell if Asterion was simply a pathological liar or actually insane. Perhaps it was both.

The Dreamspawn was not mentally ill, but his worldview was so outside the norm that he could not be considered a sane person, either.

At the same time, he lied as easily as he breathed. However, his lies were always masterfully hidden between truths, cunning omissions, and baseless assumptions presented as facts, which made conversing with him a horrible headache. Asterion's deceit was so believable and spoken so confidently that even Sunny found himself involuntarily accepting it as truth sometimes.

The worst part was that the bastard was not even seriously trying to deceive them, considering that all his lies crumbled easily as long as one examined them just a little.

Take this last claim, for example... on the surface, it sounded like a bold, but oddly logical accusation. Of course, Asterion had failed to mention that all Nightmare Creatures shared an overwhelming compulsion to kill and devour humans. If there were peaceful abominations out there, Sunny and Nephis would have never attacked them of their own accord.

"There is indeed a difference. They are the aggressors — we are merely defending ourselves out of necessity. We are simply trying to survive"

Asterion gave him a pitying look.

"Isn't that what I am doing, as well? Do you think humans were never the aggressors from whom I had to defend myself? To me, you humans are no different from Nightmare Creatures — strangers who stand in the way of my survival. Do not forget that I was born here, in the Dream Realm. This is my home. You, on the other hand, are the invaders"

Sunny smiled darkly.

"I think you're lying through your teeth." Nephis stared at Asterion with scathing intensity.

Her voice, however, remained even.

"There is a huge flaw in your reasoning, though."

He raised an eyebrow.

"Oh? Is there?"

She nodded.

"It is quite misguided of you to assume that conquering the Human Domain — which Sunny and I rule — will be safer and more conducive to your survival than challenging the Fifth Nightmare."

Asterion remained silent for a while, looking at her with a strange smile.

Then, he sighed.

"I guess you don't know. It makes sense, considering that the elders of your clan passed away a long time ago, while Anvil and Ki Song regarded you as a threat. The chain of inheritance was broken, and plenty of knowledge seems to have been lost."

Asterion shook his head.

"The Fifth Nightmare... it's different from all the rest. Challenging it is a far greater gamble than challenging the previous four. Chances of conquering it are slim."

He fell silent for a moment, and then added somberly:

"And even if you succeed, you won't be the same."

    Chapter 2761: A Cautionary Tale [1346 words]
Nephis and Sunny looked at each other.

    ‘Ah. I don't like it.'

Even knowing that nothing Asterion said could be trusted, Sunny still felt intrigued. After all, they were planning on challenging the Fifth Nightmare while knowing nothing about it. Information about it was scarce... in fact, there was no information about it at all.

The Sovereigns could have known something, though. By now, Sunny had learned more about the greatest secrets of the world than they had ever learned, but that did not mean that there was no knowledge they had possessed that he did not.

The original Supremes had been around for far longer than Sunny and Nephis, after all. They had hoarded knowledge like treasure — or, rather, wielded it like a weapon to build their kingdoms. Asterion, meanwhile, had been the foremost explorer and historian among them.

It was no coincidence that he had visited both the Eternal City and the Nightmare Desert long before the rest of humanity discovered them. Where else had he been? What secrets had he gleaned, and what mysteries had he uncovered?

It was quite a tantalizing question.

So, Sunny lingered for a while, and then asked:

"What makes the Fifth Nightmare so different? And how do you even know about it?"

    Asterion chuckled.

"I'll admit, it seems improbable that I would know anything about the Fifth Nightmare. After all, no Awakened from our cycle of the Nightmare Spell has returned from it — so, it is not like I could ask someone. Right? The phantoms who dwell within the Nightmares, meanwhile, all lived long before the Spell was completed. I understand your suspicion."

    He looked at them quietly.

"However, that does not mean that the Awakened from the previous cycles did not know anything, either. If one searches diligently, finding traces that they left behind is not impossible... granted, there is barely any of those traces left, considering the obliterating conclusions of all the previous cycles."

    Sunny frowned.
    "Cycles..."

He understood what Asterion was talking about. Earth was not the first realm infected by the Nightmare Spell — in fact, it was the last. In the past, the Spell had infected five other Divine Realms, giving its dwellers a chance to conquer the Nightmares and find salvation... just like the humans of the War Realm were fighting for their salvation now. It was just that none of those ancient people had succeeded.

The Twilight Sea had been swallowed by the Dream Realm and became the Stormsea. Heart Realm was the Burned Forest now. A piece of the Sun Realm had become Godgrave. Moon Realm was nowhere to be found, even if Sunny suspected that Moonriver Plains had once been a part of it.

And the Shadow Realm... well. Sunny had no idea who the Nightmare Spell would have infected there, but it had been swallowed by the Dream Realm in the end, as well. Asterion was claiming that he had discovered knowledge about the Fifth Nightmare in the ruins left by one of those fallen civilizations. Sunny did not know if that too was a lie, but he was willing to hear the Dreamspawn out.

Judging by the faint smirk on Asterion's face, he must have read that thought in Sunny's mind.

Shaking his head lightly, he continued to stroll around the ring of chains forming the Gateway.

"You should be familiar with Godgrave quite well, no? The ruins hidden inside the Hollows there are what remains of a civilization that, like ours, was infected by the Spell and strived to resist the encroaching Nightmare. Naturally, they failed in the end — but they had achieved quite a few startling feats before succumbing to their fate. Several Awakened of their cycle even became Spirits, no less." He smiled.

"Condemnation, Desolation — and a few others, as well. Of course, they went by different names back then... before Corruption. And among the ruins of the cities where their temples stood, there were fragmented remains of the chronicle depicting their deeds. That is where I learned a few things about the Fifth Nightmare."

    Sunny looked at him incredulously.

    'Huh.'

So, according to Asterion, Condemnation had not always been a Nightmare Creature. That fallen deity had been a fellow human once... a carrier of the Nightmare Spell no different from Nephis or Sunny, no less, albeit far more accomplished.

Not that it helped, in the end.

    'What a sobering revelation.'
But one that could be easily believed, actually, considering that Sunny himself had once fallen prey to Corruption. If not for the nature of the Tomb of Ariel, he might have been a Great Titan now, not a Supreme one. He might have been the Mad Prince.

"Why would the Fifth Nightmare be so different from the rest?"

    Asterion smiled.

"Why wouldn't it be? After all, among all the steps on the Path of Ascension, the fifth one is the most profound. It is the step of attaining godhood. There is a vast abyss between those Supreme and those Sacred — that abyss is far greater than the gap between Supremacy and all the lesser Ranks combined. In fact, it is far greater than the gap between being Sacred and being Divine, as well. The latter is mostly a question of scale... of quantity. The former, however, has to do with the inherent quality of one's being instead."

He looked at Sunny and Nephis with a wry glint in his golden eyes.

"Look at you. You have only recently become Supremace, and you are already barely holding on to your humanity. Can you even remember what it feels like, to be mundane humans? And why would you? Your powers as Supremes are already incompatible with consciousness that is mundane, and therefore human. Imagine what you must become to wield the power of a god."

    Asterion shrugged.

"How would the Spell guide one to such a fundamental transformation? It is not a matter of gaining raw power or attaining a deeper mastery of your Aspect. It is a matter of shedding the remains of your mortal self and being reborn as something greater. It is only natural that the Fifth Nightmare would be different from all the rest."

    Nephis frowned.

"So, what exactly is the difference?" Asterion flashed her a smile.

"Ah, I am afraid I cannot answer that. Asking me to be exact is asking too much — even I am not omniscient, after all. All I know is that the Fifth Nightmare shares more in common with the First Nightmare than it does with the rest. It involves not one, but two trials — one personal, tailored specifically to the challenger, and one collective, like they usually are. Both are unimaginably brutal, and failing either one means death."

He looked up with a wistful expression.

"If you succeed, however... well, the Spell will do its thing and help you achieve Apotheosis in record-breaking time. Quite miraculous, really."
    His expression darkened.

"The problem is that there is risk involved in causing such a transformation with brute force. The changes your consciousness — your very sense of self — will undergo as a result of the Fifth Nightmare cannot be controlled. After all, the Spell does not care if you are still yourself at the end of the Nightmare. All it cares about is that you have attained a new Rank."

Asterion turned to Sunny and Nephis, looking at them with a dark expression. "That was what destroyed the civilization of the Sun Realm, in the end. Their cycle did not end because of the Nightmare Creatures or because of the Dream Realm swallowing their world. Instead, it was the very thing that had been meant to save them that ended up becoming their doom." The Dreamspawn smiled.

"That's right. It was the Spirits that the Sun Realm civilization had given birth to that devoured and destroyed it, in the end. Because they lost themselves to godhood."

He fell silent for a second and then asked in an amused tone.

"Now, do you still want to challenge the Fifth Nightmare?"

Lord Asterion is an Animal/monster pet lover like Red and Ash. I remember Mordred mentioned, besides collecting divine lineages, he is also a rare echos collector, gotta catch them all.

I'm utterly amazed - and very suspicious - that they're still talking. It's exceedingly clear that what the two parties want are mutual exclusives. One ideal cannot be realized alongside the other.

The fact that Asterion is still talking implies some kind of plot afoot. That stalling them is buying him time.

I guess to kill Asterion Sunny need somehow copy birds ability to steal fate . this move will automatically erase everyone's memory. And then quickly kill him physically. We already taught with mask to touch strings of fate, so we need to understand how to cut them. Or maybe Cassy will be the one who will be able to do it after becoming sovereign.
