Chapter 2760: Soul Devourers

Nephs studied Asterion for a few moments, then continued in an even tone:

"In truth, you do not really want our Citadels. You do not want to rule humanity or conquer both worlds, either. All you want is... to grow. All you want is to use the Human Domain as fertilizer for your growth. Ah, I've never felt a more abominable hunger."

Asterion met her gaze with a nonchalant smile.

“So you knew what I wanted all along, but still went to the trouble of asking three times? All that just to refuse me..."

He sighed.

"This is the problem with those who were nurtured by the Nightmare Spell. Your power is exceptional, but you are too militant. You are too used to solving problems with a sharp sword, so no one knows the value of good negotiations."

Smiling faintly, he shook his head.

"Still. You are only reluctant to strike a deal with me because you are under the illusion that there is a different choice. Your mind will change once you taste true despair... of course, by then, I won't be offering such reasonable terms."

Sunny scoffed.

"I was right. You really do like the sound of your own voice... well, no surprise. You are quite eloquent, after all. However, I could not help but notice your peculiar choice of words earlier. What was it? We'll get to live the rest of our lives in peace if we agree?" He gave Asterion an unamused look.

"You forgot to mention that the rest of our lives would not amount to much, didn't you? A handful of years, at best. Goodness, something tells me that you are not approaching this supposed deal in good faith."

He turned to Nephis.

"Actually, I figured out what this lunatic wants already. He is aiming for natural Apotheosis... maybe unnatural is a more fitting word in this case, though. He wants to achieve what Kanakht failed to achieve and attain godhood through feeding on his own Domain — not as a human, but as a creature. In short, he wants to enthrall all of humanity, then devour it."

Turning to Asterion, Sunny added in a dark tone:

“What a guy."

In response, Asterion gave him an amused look.

“You figured me out so quickly? My, my... I guess you did not become Supreme by accident, after all."

His tone was friendly and easygoing, not at all fitting the hideous darkness of his genocidal intent.

A heavy silence hung in the air, overflowing with tension.

An unexpected sound then suddenly broke the silence, surprising both Sunny and Asterion.

It was the sound of laughter.

Nephis was laughing... her laugh was dry and joyless, but she was laughing nonetheless.

"So, that's it?"

She looked at Asterion, her eyes full of contempt.

"That is all the great and terrible Asterion amounts to? All these years of waiting, the ominous mystery surrounding you, the fear of you everyone seems to share... and in the end, you are no different from the other two."

His smile dimmed a little.

"Ouch. That was uncalled for."

Nephis, meanwhile, gritted her teeth.

"All of this because you're just another cowardly deserter who is afraid to challenge the Fifth Nightmare."

Her eyes blazed with white flames.

"Anvil and Ki Song convinced themselves that they could not abandon the waking world or risk leaving humanity without the guardianship of Supremes. But you don't care about the waking world or humanity. So, what is your excuse?"

Asterioh met her fiery gaze with a relaxed smile.

"Why do I need an excuse?"

He looked at her, then shifted his gaze to Sunny in confusion.

"And why do I need to gamble my life away in the Fifth Nightmare when there is a safer, better way to become a deity?"

Sunny exhaled slowly.

"Why? Oh, I'm not sure... has it ever occurred to you that consuming the souls of countless humans — of all humans — is the vilest, most appalling way of attaining godhood one can imagine, perhaps?" Asterion raised an eyebrow.

"Really? Remind me, please... how was it that you two became Supreme Titans? Was it through pacifism and natural enlightenment, maybe? Or was it through murder, slaughter, and bloodshed?"

He shook his head.

"How many souls have the two of you consumed to get to where you are?"

Sunny scowled deeply.

"Too many, perhaps. However, are you really comparing the souls of Nightmare Creatures to those of humans?"

Asterion laughed.

"Oh, and you two have never killed humans? The piles of corpses left in Godgrave tend to disagree. And even then, is there really such a difference? You treat Nightmare Creature as if they do not count. But they are living creatures, too... most of them are beasts, but many are just as sentient as you and I. It's just that their sentience differs from your own, so you don't feel the need to extend them the courtesy of counting them as individuals."

Sunny stared at the Dreamspawn, feeling dizzy.

He really could not tell if Asterion was simply a pathological liar or actually insane. Perhaps it was both.

The Dreamspawn was not mentally ill, but his worldview was so outside the norm that he could not be considered a sane person, either.

At the same time, he lied as easily as he breathed. However, his lies were always masterfully hidden between truths, cunning omissions, and baseless assumptions presented as facts, which made conversing with him a horrible headache. Asterion's deceit was so believable and spoken so confidently that even Sunny found himself involuntarily accepting it as truth sometimes.

The worst part was that the bastard was not even seriously trying to deceive them, considering that all his lies crumbled easily as long as one examined them just a little.

Take this last claim, for example... on the surface, it sounded like a bold, but oddly logical accusation. Of course, Asterion had failed to mention that all Nightmare Creatures shared an overwhelming compulsion to kill and devour humans. If there were peaceful abominations out there, Sunny and Nephis would have never attacked them of their own accord.

"There is indeed a difference. They are the aggressors — we are merely defending ourselves out of necessity. We are simply trying to survive"

Asterion gave him a pitying look.

"Isn't that what I am doing, as well? Do you think humans were never the aggressors from whom I had to defend myself? To me, you humans are no different from Nightmare Creatures — strangers who stand in the way of my survival. Do not forget that I was born here, in the Dream Realm. This is my home. You, on the other hand, are the invaders"

Sunny smiled darkly.

"I think you're lying through your teeth." Nephis stared at Asterion with scathing intensity.

Her voice, however, remained even.

"There is a huge flaw in your reasoning, though."

He raised an eyebrow.

"Oh? Is there?"

She nodded.

"It is quite misguided of you to assume that conquering the Human Domain — which Sunny and I rule — will be safer and more conducive to your survival than challenging the Fifth Nightmare."

Asterion remained silent for a while, looking at her with a strange smile.

Then, he sighed.

"I guess you don't know. It makes sense, considering that the elders of your clan passed away a long time ago, while Anvil and Ki Song regarded you as a threat. The chain of inheritance was broken, and plenty of knowledge seems to have been lost."

Asterion shook his head.

"The Fifth Nightmare... it's different from all the rest. Challenging it is a far greater gamble than challenging the previous four. Chances of conquering it are slim."

He fell silent for a moment, and then added somberly:

"And even if you succeed, you won't be the same."

I don't know why they not asking him why he needs the divine lineages. I like to see him try to threaten to take Shadows lineages from Sunny lol.

Besides that, if the 5th nightmare is that much scarier, it's that much more important to get all the weaves, making Sunny the flaw of the spell. However Sunny is not even showing off the use of even spirit weave at all which apparently makes his Will far more in tune to Fate, almost to the extent of Shadows and Death

The other wacky theories and ramblings of yours truly :

The mad prince once killed his other shadows to become more powerful... it is but a conjecture but if sunny ever goes to the estuary through the river of time again, he would maybe face him again but in another form. I think sunny will enter the river of time only to face the mad prince having consumed not just his other incarnations, but his entire domain... thus reaching apotheosis the same way kanakt tried.

The level of arrogance displayed by sparing cassie just to gain an additional fuel to apotheosis is so unhinged it almost makes me think there is a link to his flaw, something akin to INFINITE GREED, or hunger dependent on the point of view

also what happens if saint goes near to Asterion and says NO ! ( she can nullify aspects )

what happens if good mordret killed bad mordret by accident in the great mirror? bad mordret cannot kill the good one because the good one has death. Does this mean mordret would be good and with no flaw ?

what if the bird plucked the fate of asterion ? would it insta kill him since he would become forgotten ?

SOMETHING SUS COMES THIS WAY !!! IF SUNNY KILLS EURYS, he will just enter sunny's domain and he won't be able to contain him since his will is too strong (even slayer could so i assume eurys can since seems hella strong ... maybe he doesnt want to die ! MAYBE HE WANTS TO RESURRECT THROUGH SUNNY !!!

The Mad Prince was only a Fallen (and eventually became a Corrupted) and hence doesnt even posses a domain + The great river works in a defined manner. If the Mad Prince exists, Sunny wouldnt and vice versa (since sunny had memories which he didnt originally, like the key of the estuary, it proves that it was sunny who always crossed the estuary, resetting the loop in the great river). The fact that Sunny (Master) met Sunny (Supreme) at the estuary also means the Supreme sunny most likely only encountered the uncorrupted one.

This one might be possible about his flaw been something like that. Or he just believes that removing Cassie's eyes will completely render her powerless (possible since they definitely have a significance considering her memory powers work through them) and only failed in taking one eye because sunny arrived.

Saint wouldn't be able to do much. Her power works as a form of Will, and thus can be opposed. It was always said that Sunny's shadows, although posses a Will, are incomplete and therefore wont be able to contend against asterion's will. She might be able to weaken his powers but thats all. I doubt she can even nullify a Master's Aspect completely as its not as simple as a difference of Rank. Sunny himself can't command shadows of living creatures absolutely.

Bad Mordret is definitely alive, considering he achieved Supremacy. Good Mordret was only an Awakened after all. Also it was always said that Flaws are truly Flaws, and can never be overcome. Even weavers mask only inverts it and cannot nullify it, and weaver literally spun an absolute law that even the Gods could not oppose. Good Mordret killing bad one is a complete contradiction to this and thus cannot happen. Even if the flaw was somehow overcome, Good mordret would never become a saint (i think it was Anante who said that in natural awakening, one must discover their Flaw, and only then can they ever hope to achieve Transcendence. A flawless being cannot improve, and therefore cannot walk higher on the path of ascension.)

I doubt it. He became an idea only after achieving Supremacy. I guess if his mortal body was destroyed along with his fate being stolen, he would truly die. Plus, VTB wont be able to steal his fate in the first place. Sunny said the only reason for fate coming undone was because he was one of the only people alive and important enough to have the entire fate tightly bound to him AND WEAK ENOUGH TO HAVE HIS FATE STOLEN.

Sunny will be Sacred before being able to overcome Shadow god's curse. A mortal becoming a God was unheard of during the past (and quite literally impossible). Even Slayer wasnt one. also Slayer's will was especially potent, even weaver himself complemented her at been able to slay a Sacred Beast all by herself (which once again proves she wasnt Sacred herself, otherwise it wouldnt have been much of an accomplisment then). I doubt Eurys even comes close to her in terms of Will. If any of the Nine would pose a problem, it would be definitely Auro because of all the suspense G3 is creating about him.

What do you make of eurys being able to repel asterion infection while sunny cannot ?

First second round of answering shall begin.
          1. I think even if sunny augments saint all he can, it will affect her mostly through physical power and mystical powers more so her will. Even if sunny is able to imbue her with will I don't think it will compliment her aspect and only grant her death will making her deadlier and not actually being able to repel asterion

          2. Eurys is an immortal cursed by shadow god, fated AND (or may have been or isn't now) a sacred. It is blasphemous if you think a measly supreme can invade the mind of a god

Eurys isnt sacred. There are multiple reasons for this:
1.A mortal becoming a god seems to be unheard of before the existence of Nightmare Spell. Slayer was tasked with killing Weaver and even she was at best a Supreme (at least a bit after she killed Weaver the "first time"). This was because Weaver appeared in front of her (during Ariel's game rewards) and commended her for slaying a Sacred beast all by herself. If she was a Sacred herself, it wouldnt be impressive enough (Weaver had already been "killed" by her because she was shocked how he was alive)
2.Eurys was cursed by shadow god, having his death stolen. Same thing as Kanakht, who wanted to himself become a God but couldn't because he didnt posses a shadow. A person's shadow is linked to their soul and therefore must be vital in some way, similar to the existence of a Flaw.
3.A god's presence is vast. So much so that if a mortal merely looks at them they might die. Nephis encountered Eurys as a mere Dreamer and didnt suffer something like that. Even the three eyed skull in forgotten shore (most likely a fallen god's skull) exuded a very wrong feeling when they looked at it, and that thing had been dead for eons. A supreme's presence on the other hand, although vast, is clearly not as obvious as a god's. Supreme to Sacred is after all a qualitative leap so big that its bigger than the difference between sacred and divine.

I disagree with almost all of the points!

Yes, Supreme Sunny will most likely only encounter one version of himself in the Estuary.

No, we have been told several times that Asterion is hungry, and this is related to the Moon Goddess's bloodline.

Yes, the Holy One is unlikely to be able to do anything to Asterion.

No, the good Mordred could (accidentally) kill the evil Mordred and become a holy one for the simple reason that he would no longer be good - he would become a whole person. Moreover, as soon as the evil Mordred became the High One, the good one probably became one as well - they have the same soul, which means a common sea of souls (I think).

No, there would be nothing to stop the Bird from taking Asterion's fate line. Just because Fate was destroyed after Sunny's fate line was stolen doesn't mean that others can't be stolen. However, Asterion would still know about himself. If there were people who didn't know his name at the time of his fate being stolen, he might even spread the idea of himself among them again.

No, Auris's will is strong enough to stop Asterion. So he could be strong enough to do "Slayer's thing". But it's probably not his plan

what of mordret's flaw then? his flaw is that he was broken in a litteral sense so if good mordret kills bad mordret and he becomes whole, does this mean he has no flaw anymore ?

As you said Mordreds flaw breaks him to 7 pieces. So it's already not 7 anymore. 1 or 2 - not matter.
Also Mordred never said how his flaw called or what was written about it. He just said it's break him on 7 pieces.
Maybe it works just like with Sunny for now - he has flaw but where it's not works.
Maybe then Mordred becomes whole, he will break again. Or will be able to break himself by wishes

Asterion is hungry? what has that got to do with anything about him going easy (as per the person i was responding to) on cassie due to underestimating her because of his arrogance. you are just saying shi to disagree with me .-.

about Mordret, idk what you are saying about holy one and whatnot, maybe you dont speak english. Both Mordret would never become one as per the existence of Flaws. In Mirage City Noir part, it was said that a Flaw is truly a Flaw and is impossible to overcome (Sunny himself contemplated that what would happen if Good Mordret actually killed and absorbed the other six parts of himself, therefore becoming a whole, but the whole idea of a Flaw contradicts this. Anante also said a Flaw is a MUST to walk the path of ascension, and without discovering your own flaw its not even possible to become a Saint. A flawless being, afterall, can no longer improve.

my argument about vtb stealing asterion's fate has no connection to what you countered. i never said someones fate can't be stolen because its unraveled due to sunny. maybe its just the language barrier and you aren't able to understand (or maybe translation issue)

BTW Asterion want every single person to stay alive for "eat" them all later. So yeah he keeps her alive because of hunger
We don't know how is Mordreds flow works. All we know - mordred was breaking to 7 parts because of his flow. But one of part killed 5 of them at s ame moment. So be broken to 7 parts not necessarily on his flow. So we DON'T KNOW how it truly works

Supreme sunny won't meet mad prince as he existed in the Nightmare.
Now if you say how did he meet master sunny ---- reason being Nightmare copies the reality of a certain time and shows the challengers and in the estuary there is no concept of time hence the past and the future are irrelevant leading to both the past and the future being copied into the Nightmare making a Supreme sunny copy for master sunny to meet

I'm calling sus on Asterion saying the Fifth Nightmare is different. He has 0 information on how a 5th Nightmare will play out, not even the information gained in their cohorts 4th Nightmare can give it.

BUT , as Sunny said, Asterion mixes lies with truths and some baseless conjecture, if we assume there is some truth their, what I can only think of for him to form that opinion is information fed directly from the Spell. Asterion is a Spell carrier, we always forget that since we don't have the Spell reminding Sunny now, BUT he was on the moon for Decades with a Category 6 gate as his neighbor. What the gate spews out is mostly related to what challenge it gives, so going by this thought, the monsters spawned out will provide which Era it corresponds to. And I am highly certain that this Era is when Weaver was killing every God to fuel the Nightmare Spell.

I can’t help but think it was kind of a waste to destroy the Eternal City. Nightwalker says he challenged a nightmare over and over again, using the immortality the Demon of Repose ascribed to the city. Given Sunny’s ability to stitch Nightwalker’s shadow back to him, I feel like it might have been more worth it to abandon him and have Jet (since she was already there) or some other saint (through Nephis’ gate) brute force a nightmare to attain supremacy, and then have Sunny stitch them back up, rather than save Nightwalker. Although, I do get with the constraints of Kanakht, it would have been tight for time, but I assume time works differently in the nightmares than in the dream realm? So it might have been possible. I feel like they could have figured something about and abused it ngl.

there wasnt really a choice of saving eternal city tho? To get weaver's lineage, he had to get to the sorcery of repose and so cause it to be destroyed anyway. Also Kanakht was still not killed (and since shadow god was the cause for his immortality, it wouldnt have been easy to kill him anyway) and who knows how long he could be trapped in dreams by Nightmare.
