Chapter 2670: Broken Navigation

In the end, Nightwalker did manage to make the turn. Sunny had not been sure how he was going to, since it seemed physically impossible, but the founder of the House of Night was not considered to be the greatest and most daring seafarer in history without a reason.

"Pull more of your creepy shadows to the bow!"

The gigantic ship moved like a nimble gondola in his steady hands. The Night Garden turned slightly in the canal, its stern nearly scraping the Park Island while its bow came mere metres away from the shore of the opposite one... and the frenzied mass of abhorrent nightmare creatures seething on its edge.

Nightwalker's warning had been timely, but shades alone were not enough to prevent the fallen immortals from pouring onto the deck of the ship. Even the simultaneous discharge of the six cannons installed on the bow was not enough — so, Sunny sent Saint and Fiend there, augmenting each of them with one of his incarnations.

Luckily, the fierce confrontation did not last long. Soon enough, the Night Garden reached the termination point of the island, escaping into the wider waters of the canal junction.

There was one problem, though...

There was still not quite enough space there to allow the titanic ship to pass.

"How is he going to do it?"

Nightwalker remained calm, so Sunny assumed that he was confident. He was probably relying on some mystical quality of his Aspect or his divine lineage... or so Sunny thought.

He turned out to be wrong, though, since Nightwalker used a far more mundane solution to push the living ship through the impossibly tight turn.

"Grab something!"

Sunny took a few steps away from the pillar he had been leaning on and grabbed Aether. He was not afraid for himself, since even falling over the edge of the runic hall would not pose him any danger. Aether, however, could very well be hurt by the fall from the great height of the main pagoda, not to mention that his concentration could be broken, thus weakening the shield of starlight protecting the ship.

In the next moment...

‘This insane...’

The Night Garden rammed into the side of the island at great speed. The immense weight of the living ship was already astronomical, and with countless shades — including giants like Goliath and the Puppeteer, not to mention the great bulk of the Dark Castle — aboard, it had become simply frightening. The resulting impact was so violent and dire that an entire section of the island collapsed, crumbling into the foaming water.

Colossal chunks of stone were sent barreling through the air like shells. "..bastard!"

Sunny barely prevented Aether from being thrown over the edge of the runic hall. "You lunatic!"

Nightwalker laughed loudly.

Piercing through the cloud of dust and stone debris, the bow of the Night Garden emerged from it and entered the northward canal. Its port side scraped against the jagged surface of the shattered stone, leaving deep scars on the living hull — however, it did not slow down much, continuing to move forward.

"Ah, that's better!"

The demented youth grinned brightly while steering the ship into the canal. Sunny looked forward and then cursed loudly, noticing the wall of another island quickly approaching the bow of the living ship at an angle.

Soon enough, the Night Garden collided with it with its starboard side. This time, the impact was only glancing, sending cracks running through the ancient stone and helping the living ship complete its turn. Breathing heavily, Sunny glanced back.

The edge of one island was entirely shattered, mending itself slowly, while the other was cracked. The hull of the Night Garden was damaged, but not breached.

The water flowing through the canals swayed and surged, climbing hundreds of meters higher than it was supposed to be. Nightwalker hummed.

"What's up with that expression? We made the turn, didn't we?"

He smiled brightly.

"Actually, I've been feeling stifled ever since we set off from the Lighthouse. These narrow canals are the worst. Open seas are where my heart lies, with no limits or boundaries in sight... but this was unexpectedly fun!"

Aether just stared at them both in shock. Sunny gritted his teeth.

"Yes, we did make the turn. And that is why I have this expression!"

Nightwalker studied him for a moment, then shrugged.

"Well, anyway. I suggest you start loading your cannons quick."

Sunny frowned.

"What?"

Nightwalker pointed forward.

"Load your cannons! There's a bridge ahead!"

Cursing, Sunny spun around and glanced forward.

The Night Garden was moving north now, and there was indeed another bridge barring their way north.

"Damnation!"

Controlling the manifested shadows, Sunny hurriedly reloaded the cannons. He needed to take apart an indestructible bridge again... and this time, it was a moving target. Actually, it was the Night Garden that was moving — but that did not make the aiming easier.

The torrent of abominations had made its way around the broken section of the island by then, continuing the pursuit.

What's worse, it was not the Park Island starboard of the Night Garden now. Instead, it was another nameless island, complete with its own swarm of dreadful immortals.

They were already rushing toward its edge, assembling into a second river of monstrous flesh.

The living ship was going to be besieged on both sides soon...

And it was only going to get worse.

The deeper into the Eternal City they went, the more islands they would pass. So, the pursuing abominations from the previous ones would join those from the new ones, and their numbers would continuously swell.

Until all fallen immortals left in the southern half of the Eternal City were straining to get to the deck of the living ship, overwhelmed by a frenzied desire to consume Sunny, Jet, the Saints of Night... and the millions of people sheltered inside the Night Garden.

But possibly... possibly...

That was a good thing.

Sunny's eyes glistened dangerously.

‘I wonder if the Dutchman would like my present...’

I thought he would crank the stern by making the weight focused on the bow. You know, like what Maui from moana did when he ride a boat. With that, the axis would get shortened. Although the most concerning thing are the passangers, but isnt this not any worse? Plus, the NG wouldnt suffer further damage.

        Chapter 2671: The Sociable Gondolier

At a certain point, Sunny somehow turned into a man who had experienced and endured more than most. So much so that confusing people with honest stories about his many misadventures was, in fact, one of his favorite activities. In other words, he considered himself a pretty seasoned veteran. Nothing really bothered him anymore, much less scared him.

        However...

As the Night Garden maneuvered through the narrow maze of canals of the Eternal City, he had to admit that this was perhaps the most terrifying situation he had ever found himself in. God's Grave, Burnt Forest, Ariel's Game... Nothing could compare to the horrors of the flooded city of the Peace Demon in terms of scale and scale of its lethality.

Perhaps only Ariel's Tomb could compare with it — not the infinitely flowing waters of the Great River or its misty Mouth, but the inner walls of the ancient pyramid, where myriads of Dark Butterflies rested on the cold black stone.

Although he had only caught a glimpse of those hideous creatures from afar. However, the hideous legion of corrupted immortals—Kanakht's army of Flesh—was right in front of him.

"Damn it... this is too much."

That damned creature alone was already enough to disgust and make even Effie lose her appetite. But when thousands of these creatures stalked the Night Garden like two grotesque, slippery rivers of flesh... Sonny felt like he would never be able to enjoy food again.

By this point, the human ship was surrounded on both sides and besieged. The channels varied in width, but there was never more than a few hundred meters between its hull and the weathered bases of the islands—an insignificant distance for the Great Nightmarish Creatures.

The cannons rumbled non-stop, and the barrier of killing starlight still surrounded the Night Garden like a shiny shield. However, this alone was not enough to prevent the invasion of immortal abominations on his deck, and therefore most of the burden fell on the Shadow Legion, which was controlled by Sunny.

Everything was going well at first, but as more and more immortals joined the chase, the terrifying battle became frantic and feverish.
Sunny could barely manage, commanding the phantoms and controlling the guns to push back the Nightmarish Creatures. On top of that, he also needed to destroy any bridge that appeared in the path of the living ship, and prevent its parts from connecting again until the ship had passed. His head was starting to hurt.

All the noise was unbearable, and the sight was excruciating enough to give even the most seasoned veterans of the Dream Realm nightmares. All the phantoms of the Shadow Legion, all of its Shadows, and most of its incarnations were engaged in a fierce battle against countless undying Great Nightmarish Creatures—it really was a battle unlike any Sunny had fought before.
Needless to say, the chaos and frenzy reigning there were second to none.
The untouched space of the Eternal City shone with a beautiful silver light, and the cold waters of the Stormy Sea moved over the besieged Night Garden like a dark sky.

"Damn Weaver... Why couldn't this nasty Daimon just hide parts of himself somewhere quiet and
        easily accessible..."

Sonny looked at the Nightwalker and pursed his lips.

        "Just cursing a dead Demon."

The young founder of the House of Night looked at him in silence for a moment, and then nodded.

"Ah, I see. This is not new to me."

At that moment, the air of the runic hall suddenly turned cold, and Jet appeared from the streams of mist.

She looked around warily, then released her braid and found a chair to sit in.

Despite the horrific violence happening around the living ship, she seemed completely calm. In fact, she languidly stretched out her legs and leaned back in her chair, letting out a contented sigh.
        Sonny raised an eyebrow.

        Jet

        looked at him calmly.

        "Dead tired."

Then she grinned, tilted her head back, and closed her eyes. Sunny also smiled and turned his attention back to the battle.

        Only the Nightwalker seemed surprised.

"Aren't you going to help protect the ship? As far as I can see, this is a situation where all hands are needed."

Jet sighed and replied without opening her eyes,

"No one likes to fight immortal abominations, but in my case they are just the worst possible enemy."

Sunny nodded softly. Jet's soul couldn't generate essence, so she relied on her Aspect to exist. This
Aspect allowed her to absorb some of the soul essence of those she killed—however, the fallen immortals of Eternal City never died, which meant that fighting them was harmful to her.
Not only could she not replenish her broken soul, but she also had to actively use up her reserves. To make matters worse, there were no other Nightmarish Creatures in this part of the Eternal City, so she couldn't hunt at all.
Jet opened one eye and looked at the Nightwalker.

"But don't worry. I'm just saving my strength for the Dutchman."

He looked at her with interest.

        "Oh?"

        Jet nodded.

"Do you know why they call me the Soul Reaper? Because my Aspect allows me to directly attack the soul. Among other things, this means that I am ideally suited for killing immaterial abominations and ghosts of all kinds."

        She smiled grimly.

"The last time we met the Dutchman, I sank several of his ships. However, I never got to the flagship... maybe I can do it this time."

        Jet looked away and sighed.

"Although I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. After all, not much is known about the Dutchman— what is it, where did he come from, and what is he capable of."
        The Nightwalker chuckled.

        "Oh, really?"

He shook his head, and then said in an indifferent tone,

"You're wrong. I may not know much about most things... But I know something about the Dutchman. After all, this thing has been hunting me for decades."

The Nightwalker looked at Sunny and Jet with a smile.

        "Do you want to share?"

          Chapter 2672: The Cursed Wanderer

          Sunny and Jet exchanged glances.

          "Was the Dutchman following you?"

They knew that the House of Night had its own story with the ship and its ghostly armada, but assumed that it mostly consisted of distant observations. On the other hand, the Nightwalker didn't mention his clan... he only talked about himself, as if the Dutchman had a grudge against him.

          He chuckled.

"Oh yeah. To be honest, it was a lot of trouble at first."

The Nightwalker looked around and smiled.

"Fortunately, there is not a single vessel in the Stormy Sea that can outrun the Night Garden. So that bastard has never been able to get to me."

          Sunny raised an eyebrow.

"But why is he interested in you? Wait..."

          His expression barely changed noticeably.

"Don't tell me the Dutchman rushed to the Eternal City because you were here?"

The Nightwalker laughed and shook his head.

“no... You've got it all mixed up."

He was startled when a particularly loud rumble rang out over the Night Garden, followed by a chilling inhuman howl. Then, with a grimace, he added:

"The Dutchman hunted me because I had a map of the Eternal City. He always wanted to get here, and I was the only one who knew the way. That's why he's been relentlessly stalking me for a good half of three decades—even though I've never let him get close. That's why he didn't attack the House of Night after I left. It just didn't make sense, because I took the card with me."
Sunny stared at him in surprise.

"But why exactly did the Dutchman want to get to the Eternal City?"

The Night Wanderer shrugged his shoulders.

"How should I know? Unfortunately, I'm not in the habit of talking to sinister ghosts. So I didn't ask."

He was silent for a few moments, and then said in a gloomy tone:

"First of all, you must understand that you are Dutch... It's not a Nightmarish Creature. In fact, they are two Nightmarish Creatures that are connected to each other."

Sunny and Jet couldn't help but exchange glances again. In the end, Jet spoke first:

"Two... Two Nightmarish Creatures? Do you mean the ship and its captain?"

The Nightwalker looked at her with a smile.

"Bingo! These two are completely different creatures, but at the same time they will never be able to escape from each other. They are united."

          Sunny frowned.

"I thought you didn't talk to sinister ghosts. How do you know?"

Even Cassie couldn't tell them much about the Dutchman. So why did the Nightwalker seem to know so much?

"Because the Stormy Sea is my home."

          The Nightwalker shrugged his shoulders.

"And the Dutchman lived in these waters for thousands of years. You didn't think that the Awakened Ones of the waking world were the first to suffer from his malice, did you? No... His footprints and stories about him are scattered everywhere among the ruins left by the Snake King's people. For them, he was akin to the plague."

          His expression turned gloomy.

"In fact, many of these ruins became ruins precisely because of the Dutchman. Oh, but they certainly didn't call him Dutch. Instead, they called him... How is that? Oh, yeah. The Cursed Wanderer is a mortal captain who was cursed to wander the sea forever and therefore became the curse of the sea."

The Nightwalker looked into the distance, then smiled reverently.

"These ancient people believed that seeing a Cursed Wanderer was a bad omen. If you see his silhouette floating in the fog, even from afar, death will come for you soon—something like that."

He was silent for a moment, and then added in a neutral tone,

"According to legend, the Cursed Wanderer was a mortal captain who swore to find the Eternal City and confess his eternal love to the Peace Demon. He sailed through the Twilight Sea, endlessly searching, slowly aging and weakening. In the end, desperate to buy more time to fulfill his vow, he challenged the heart of storms to obtain the mythical treasure, the Well of Souls. But this treasure turned out to be cursed and sealed for a reason, and it swallowed him up."

          The Nightwalker chuckled.

"That's usually the case with cursed treasures. In any case, the captain found himself tied to the Well of Souls, but instead of becoming its prisoner, he subjugated it. The Well of Souls became a ship, and the captain became its helmsman. However, they never reached the Eternal City or found the Peace Demon, being cursed to wander the Stormy Sea forever without respite."

          He shrugged and chuckled softly.

"Well, at least that's the legend. In my opinion, this is mostly nonsense... but some parts of it are true. The Dutchman is a kind of well of souls. It's like a horror matryoshka doll—the ship absorbs souls and enslaves them, and then sends them to kill the living and capture more souls."

          His expression faded.

"You must have noticed that killing ghosts doesn't destroy them; it just sends them back to the holds of smaller ships. And destroying the ships just brings them back to the Dutchman. As far as I know, if he takes you away, there's no escape... The souls of several of my friends are probably still out there, among the ghost soldiers of that vile duo."

          Sunny looked at him doubtfully.

          "Did you have any friends?"

The Nightwalker gave him a menacing smile.

          "...shut up."

He paused, and then added in a somber tone:

"This ship itself is just a tool. Although his captain is one of the captured souls, I believe he is the true master of the Dutchman. He is the evil will behind the curse that has plagued the Stormy Sea for thousands of years, claiming countless lives and bringing despair to all who see him."

          The Nightwalker grimaced.

"We are lucky that the Dutchman almost never goes near the coast. Otherwise, humanity would have much fewer Citadels."

The battle was still raging, so Sunny didn't have the energy to seriously ponder this strange story. However, it echoed in his head, making him feel like there was a grain of important information hidden in it.

While he was thinking, Jet said with a smile:

"But I didn't feel despair when I saw Captain Dutch.

" Her smile widened a little.

"I was thinking something like... hey, that bastard is staring at me. Oh, how I want to kill him."

          The Nightwalker chuckled.

"Well. You'll have a chance soon..."
