Chapter 2611: More Dreadful Wraith

The ghostly crewmates of the spectral ship all wielded power similar to that of Corrupted abominations. Most were akin to Beasts, while the captain was akin to a Monster — at least that had been the case during the brief skirmish between the vanguard of the wraith armada and the Night Garden in the past.

Jet could feel that this particular crew was more powerful than the scouts who had attempted to board the living ship before, and had no doubt that there were far more harrowing terrifying beings among the ghosts the Dutchman commanded — Demons, Devils, and even nightmare creatures of the Great Rank.

But it did not matter.

The ghastly armada was vast, and there seemed to be an endless number of lost souls populating the ethereal, rotting ships. They were wraiths, which meant that most Awakened would be in great peril in a battle against the Dutchman's otherworldly army. But for that very reason, Jet was their natural adversary.

Her Aspect allowed her to directly destroy the souls of her enemies, after all. Not only that, but she grew stronger with each enemy she killed. Her essence was replenished, and the cold shattered star of her soul core grew both in size and volume... one dark jagged shard at a time. After two relentless decades of chaos and slaughter, her jigsaw soul core had become vast and expansive, looming above her Soul Sea like a broken sun.

And that, in turn, allowed her to augment her undying body with essence far past the limits of what any other Awakened was capable of, both granting her fierce power and allowing her to sustain that ferocity for a longer time — almost indefinitely, as long as there were living beings for her to kill. Or undead beings...

It mattered not to Jet.

As the crew of the spectral ship rose from ghostly light and rushed at her, she saw them clearly. Their ancient armor was shredded and torn, their phantasmal bodies underneath were covered in terrible wounds, and their cold empty eyes burned with ethereal green flames.

There was no frenzied hunger or demented fury in their gazes, though, like in those of most Nightmare Creatures... just torment. Lunging forward to meet the flood of murderous wraiths, Jet spun her war scythe and easily sliced the nearest of specters in half. A mundane blade — or even an enchanted one — would have simply passed through his ephemeral body as if it were passing through mist, but her scythe severed the soul of the spectral abomination just as easily as it would have severed flesh. The silhouette of the ancient wraith rippled and dissolved into a dying flash of pale light, disappearing forever.

Those who had managed to slay these peculiar beings before reported that the Nightmare Spell did not announce their deaths, and there were no soul shards left behind them either.

But Jet could clearly feel the end of the ghostly sailor's existence. A stream of essence entered her soul, and a new shard was added to the jagged orb of her broken soul core, making it a fraction bigger.

The Spell whispered into her ear, as well. [You have slain a... you have slain a... you have...]

However, its voice suddenly faltered and grew indistinct, as if it could not process or express the truth of what had happened, like a machine encountering an error.

‘How curious...’

It seemed that even the Nightmare Spell did not quite know what the Dutchman and his wraith armada were, or at least could not speak it.

Jet ignored that information, for now. Continuing the motion, she took a step forward while reversing the grip on her weapon and thrust it forward to pierce the chest of the next wraith. Since their ethereal bodies offered the Mist Blade no resistance, she then fluidly transitioned from a downward thrust into a spin, beheading the one rushing at her from the back.

[You have slain... a...]

Jet exploded into a hurricane of ice-cold steel, moving across the deck of the ghostly ship like the Grim Reaper. She was a Transcendent being, while the spectral sailors were all Corrupted — so, in theory, each of them wielded power equal to hers, or at least power that existed in the same realm. Nevertheless, they all fell under her scythe like stalks of wheat, vanishing forever.

And whatever essence she burned while harvesting these lost souls was immediately replenished by the streams of essence she received from the kills.

The captain of the ship was far more powerful than his subordinates, but he dissolved into ghostly green light in mere seconds, as well. In an astonishingly short amount of time, the deck of the rotting ship became empty, with only Jet standing there, bathed in an eerie glow and the echoes of the brutal violence that had just been perpetrated here.

Still... she felt like her job here was not finished, yet.

So, Jet plunged the blade of her scythe into the deck itself, aiming to destroy the soul of the ship.

That, she felt, was the real monster.

It took several blows, and just as she suspected, a torrent of essence more potent than all the previous ones flowed into her soul as the shape of the ship dimmed, slowly disappearing into the bright daylight. At the same time, an explosion of radiance escaped from somewhere deep within its hold, accompanied by a litany of otherworldly groans.

As if a swarm of tortured souls was suddenly set free.

Jet smiled darkly, thinking that she was starting to unravel the secret nature of the sinister wraith armada — or at least the nature of its lesser ships.

Just before the spectral ship disappeared completely, she pushed herself off its broken deck and soared high into the air, flying across the sky.

Breaching hundreds of meters with that single jump, Jet landed on the next ship in a maelstrom of cold steel, wreaking havoc among its crew and harvesting their souls to empower her own.

Behind her, the Night Garden towered like a fortress of weathered wood, and her soldiers were feverishly rushing to reload its mighty cannons.

weavers fixation with sunny can be explained by the fact that sunnys aspect allows him to adopt the weavers lineage. or maybe weaver even planned his aspect, but other then that, i think theres a seperate connection they have. The weaver seems way too similar to sunny, either sunny has subconsciously acted like the weaver due to both of their inherent tie to fate, or sunny is related to weaver, maybe even is weaver through some weird time loop phenomena. Ive said this before but fate seems way too strong to be linear, if fate was linear it would be pretty easy to break, im assuming fate affects everything at once, past, present, future, anything that happens is considered fate, even breaking fate, that allows for the possibility of sunny being weaver himself, and the cohort the rest of the daemons

Probably no actually. He felt very constricted by slayer because since she was fated it was like the intrings of fate were against weaver. I believe this implies that he wasn't fated. More than that, i am pretty certain that he did not create fate, since he himself did not posses control of it

When is Sunny going to upgrade his shadow dance or whatever? Can’t remember what that’s called either. Or does he need his true name back because he can’t really advance his shadow moves because he’ll lose himself? Cause he should be able to literally turn into anything on a whim

Yeah, the biggest thing about advancing shadow dance is that he will legitimately need to experience and fully believe in being whatever he takes the form of. That’s one of the most significant reasons he will need his fate back from the bird, beyond being remembered by his compatriots. The last time we saw him using the “next” level of shadow dance was towards the end of that game where he got, I think it was the soul weave, where he became one of (again, awful with names, I think it was Night’s) children. He almost didn’t come back from that, and that was with really short exposure.

On that note, I agree with the sentiment. I really can’t wait for him to get his fate back for a great number of reasons. Excited to see what he’ll be able to do with his abilities and maybe even his lost Memories that were stored in the spell, plus his friends finally remembering him. Interested in seeing the outrage and feelings of betrayal, but also the realization in how his actions connected to what they forgot in the span of their reunion. That was a word vomit, so if something didn’t make sense, don’t worry about it lol.

I think Sunny doesn't need to get back his True Name from VTB to use properly Shadow Dance.

If you remember, when they were inside the Death Game, every Cursed creature they killed had a name that no other creature in the world could have had. Like Plato's ideas, those creatures were the perfect representation of the concept. The giant worm was the representation of infinity, hence why he alone was called Infinity. The horde of rats is the Rat King, THE Rat King, meaning there isn't any other creature that represents the concept of a Rat King better than that creature. The Wolf is the prototypical wolf, no other wolf can be as "wolf" as The Wolf.

So, Sunny needs to embody a concept to become Sacred, and since he will become the concept in and of itself, that will be what he is, the perfect representation of the concept he'll become. No other creature can be that, or better yet, they can be a lower, not perfect, representation of it.

Sunny needs an anchor to not loose himself when he performs shadow dance, so he just needs to anchor himself to the fact that he's That Concept and he won't lose himself, or his freedom from Nephis.

But since G3 has been foreshadowing the concept of choosing your bindings in two convos, between Sunny and Effie and between Sunny and Kai, I think there's room for debate over whether he will retrieve his fate or not.

I think the situation is already compromised, you can't put back together perfectly that which was destroyed (the tapestry of fate), so maybe they will remember him but with great difficulty, and his true name will be changed.

That is a completely fair and well composed argument. The spell is just a way for people to expedite getting stronger, and people did it of their own means well before the spell. I am not sure if this has been disproved or otherwise confirmed, but I am of the belief that the spell is not synonymous with fate, and that it is simply built on it.

By that concept, the corrupted creatures are still part of fate, and the spell interacts with fate to know what would otherwise be unknown, which is how it knows their respective titles. And to further my elaboration of how I understand it, true names would be connected to fate itself. It has been explicitly stated that Sunny still has a true name, he’s just disconnected from it. We also just don’t have any more data on any other fateless creatures. Weaver himself had to specifically manipulate fate in order to create the circumstances for a chance for a fateless weapon, showing the extremely unique situation Sunny is in.

Also, Named enemies don’t necessarily mean that’s their true name. I don’t think that’s an argument you explicitly made, but it’s relevant for my train of thought. Regardless of that specific fact, the most apt concept Sunny possesses would be Death; however, that is not his true name. In all honesty, I could be wrong here, but I can’t remember any instance of knowing whether the spell will refer to other beings besides the user by their true name, which is what this part of my argument hinges on. In any case, they’re corrupted and thus not the best examples for maintaining your sense of self. At best, they’re embodying their Concept mindlessly, which Sunny can do too and has almost done on multiple accounts by losing himself in pretending to be something else. We also saw this in their third (?) nightmare where everybody ended up with their corrupted twins.

Honestly, my rambling so far has been pretty directionless and potentially besides the point. At the crux of it, Sunny needs some sort of anchor to help him not lose himself to shadow dance; this is something you explicitly said yourself, even (sorry lol I’m drafting in bulk and then reading your comment intermittently to make sure I’m not deviating too far). I don’t entirely understand my own fixation with him needing his true name to solve this problem. You are absolutely right, it is the most direct way, and also not the only solution. He does embody a Concept, and one of those is the ability to mould himself into other concepts. Because of the abstract and contradictory nature of that aspect of his Concept, I can’t make a definitive argument for it.

Most directly, my fixation on his true name aligns with the glancing points you made. There are just too many implications of Sunny intending to get his fate back, to the point of him explicitly saying such, and a large number of plot points that are set up hinging on that fact. This includes his objective to kill the VTB after he collects all of Weavers legacy, and also the theme of “accepting that there are some chains you choose to bear willingly” that GuiltyThree has been developing. The idea that his friends will only remember pieces of their history is honestly fascinating. I still disagree, as fate is currently in tatters but we don’t see any obvious signs of side effects beyond prophets no longer being able to read fate. We also don’t know if fate will restructure itself once Sunny’s foundational piece is hypothetically reintegrated. It could be a cool theme of consequences, but who knows. I realize you recognized and even explicitly mentioned some of these details, this is just for the sake of clarity in my beliefs.

Sorry this yap ended up being so long lol, I’m not even sure if this will be coherent to somebody else. I love this book so much and none of my friends read it, so upon given the chance to talk about the nuances of the plot and settings, I absolutely pounced on it. Hopefully you find at least part of this interesting, I loved your take and I hope this was more constructive theorizing than critical.
