Chapter 2516: Surrender

Some time later, they shared a kettle of fragrant tea while digesting their food in peace. Sunny warmed his hands on the cheap metal cup, letting the hot steam wash over his bruised face and chase some of the soreness away. Effie had stretched her legs under the table and crossed them, staring at her

tea with a distant expression.

Somewhere outside the diner, many sets of eyes were secretly observing them. Some of them belonged to the mysterious force that wanted Mordret dead, and was hoping to reach him by following the two detectives who had seen them last.

There was another pair of eyes, as well.

Sunny could not be entirely sure, but he was confident that the real Mordret was spying on them, as well. He had been protecting his nicer twin from the shadows, so not knowing where the CEO of Valor had been taken to was not something the Prince of Nothing could or would tolerate.

But there was nothing Sunny could do about any of that just yet.

Glancing at Effie, he took a sip of tea and asked:

"What are you thinking about?"

Effie was distracted from her thoughts and looked at him without her usual carefree smile.

She remained silent for a while, then said:

"The future."

Sunny raised an eyebrow.

"The future?"

Effie nodded.

"Yes. Not tomorrow, or the day after that. Not even the Fourth Nightmare and Supremacy, but… about what happens next."

He considered her words for a few moments.

"So, the end of the world."

He meant it quite literally. The waking world was already being slowly devoured by the Dream Realm, and that process was only going to accelerate exponentially in the coming years.

Before too long, there would be no waking world at all. It could last for another decade, or maybe even a few… but no longer than that.

Effie studied Sunny silently, then asked:

"When we become Supreme, you and Nephis are going to challenge the Fifth Nightmare, aren't you?"

Sunny hesitated for a while.

Actually, he was not sure how to answer that question.

He was still undecided… he still did not know if he was ready to fight for his fate, and the bonds that came with it, or abandon it forever and look for a different path to Apotheosis than the one offered by the Spell.

Eventually, he shrugged.

"If there is no better way, sure."

Now that he was reminded about the complicated choice looming over him, his thoughts turned in that direction.

Effie hesitated for a while.

"The Fifth Nightmare… Apotheosis. It changes you, doesn't it? Makes you more divine. But it also makes you leave some of your humanity behind."

Still consumed by his thoughts, Sunny raised an eyebrow.

"In a way. That is what I heard, at least. Why?"

Effie looked down.

"I am just wondering what will become of me after I attain Supremacy. Will I be able to stop there, or will I be forced to continue walking forward? And if I do… what I will have to leave behind."

She smiled wistfully.

"It will be ironic, won't it? If the only way to protect what I cherish most is to abandon it. I am… not sure that I would want to do something like that. That I am capable of it."

Sunny remained silent for a long time.

"That would be quite ironic, yes. Life is full of irony that way, I find."

Gods knew his life was.

Letting out a sigh, Sunny focused on his tea.

After enjoying its warmth for a while, he asked:

"Hey, Effie. Can I ask you a question?"

She smiled faintly.

"Go ahead."

Sunny chewed his lips for a few seconds.

"It is sort of a moral conundrum. Let's say that you love someone, and they love you back… but you can't be with that person unless you surrender to their will completely. Unless you trust them completely. Would you still do it?"

Effie stared at him with a neutral expression for a while.

Then, she frowned in confusion.

"Sure. What's the problem?"

Sunny blinked a few times.

"Now, I don't think you understand. In this scenario, the other person will have the ability to control you. They'll be able to end your life if they want, or force you to do things that you don't want to do. They might not ever use that ability… but they'll have it. You will be at their mercy — always, and absolutely."

Effie continued to stare at him in confusion.

"Yeah. And?"

Sunny was baffled, too.

What was this reaction?

"What do you mean, yeah? That's a serious problem, you know! How can you surrender yourself to someone else, just like that?"

Effie laughed quietly.

"That's just marriage, though?"

Sunny stared at her in complete bewilderment.

"What do you mean?"

Effie smiled and took a sip of her tea, then shrugged.

"Well, what you described simply sounds like marriage — what marriage is supposed to be, at least. Marriage is all about trust, after all. You have to

trust your partner, and they have to trust you. Naturally, nothing is absolute, and trust is not absolute either."

She leaned forward and gave him an amused look.

"But, Sunny… imagine entrusting your infant child to someone when you have to leave — defenseless, fragile, vulnerable… infinitely precious. That is what spouses all over the world do every day, and that is the level of trust they have in each other. If I trust my husband enough to surrender my son to

his care, why would I not trust him with my own life? My life seems trifling in comparison."

Effie shook her head and chuckled.

"Trusting them completely, giving them the power to influence what you do, and being at their mercy… always, and absolutely. That's just marriage. You

are supposed to surrender to the person you love — that's what love is. So, as long as the feeling is mutual, I don't see what the problem is. Not much of a conundrum, if you ask me."

Sunny just stared at her, completely stunned.

That… was definitely not a perspective he had ever considered before, or had even imagined before.

It was entirely ridiculous, bringing down his mystical existential dilemma down to earth so thoroughly that it suddenly seemed ordinary and mundane, not even worth mentioning.

As if there was no dilemma at all.

'That's just… what love is?'

Surrendering to someone...

Trusting them completely.

Sunny stared at Effie some more, then slowly shook his head.

"You're a insane woman, you know that?"

Effie scoffed.

"Oh, really? Remind me, which one of us frequents a psychiatrist?"

Sunny took a deep breath and looked down.

He really did not want to answer…

But sadly, he had to.

"...I do."

Effie nodded with satisfaction.

"Exactly, so don't go around pointing fingers at people… especially at insane people. They might bite it off."

Grinning, she raised her cup and finished her tea.

Outside, a stormy night was falling upon Mirage City.

please dont sunny, this is the only novel keeping me sane, and if you sacrifice your free will to get with someone that will put her goals above you isnt worth it, she has clearly stated that and will violate your free will to get what she wants, effies advice is flawed, as BOTH parties should listen to each other, also marriage doesnt steal free will???, it would only be somewhat acceptable if Nephis also was forced to listen to sunnys commands, i hope that sunny becomes a skilled enough weaver, where he can maybe alter the spell that he isnt just a divine shadow that must obey orders, but rather become a true masterless shadow that chooses his own host, nephis, if he ends up actually going into her servitude willingly under the name of "trust" i will genuinely cry, its not worth sacrificng your free will to someone who doesnt even love you as much as you love them...please sunny, it really really isnt worth it, if it ends up happening, it'll prolly be used as a plot device where nephis forces sunny into helping her fight the forgotten god (unlikely I guess but I dont trust nephis, no matter how well written she is, hell id prefer morderet) and trust will be violated yadayada, where sunny either forgives her or they fight each other and die...or nephis commands him not to fight and continues loving him with this invisible leash which is just...a vile thought, anyway please share your thoughts, i made an account just because of this chapter

Dumb ahh reader, nephis is the perfect representation of false altruism. It was stated multiple times that her goals clash with her personality to a frighting degree. And her love for sunny, the boy she met on the forgotten shore is far greater then her love for master sunless.

Keep in mind that this isn't only about nephis and sunny, it's also about sunny and his relationship with everyone. His friends don't trust him as they once did, as of now he's a mysterious figure to them even if they go around traveling together, at the end of the day from their point of view, their relationship is purely for business.

dude I have no issue with him regaining he fate and his relationships, hell id love that, but its just that I dont believe anyone can have a healthy relationship with someone that has that much power over them, im just saying hopefully sunny at least also gets a level of power over her, i dont see the point in you calling me a dumb ahh reader, im just saying based on what I've read according to sunless and Nephi herself her goals are mor important than sunless, but maybe he'll become a higher priority when she remembers the true him, regardless i just find shadow bond a distasteful metaphorical and almost literally leash

You have the same misconception as Sunny himself. She used her power over him once, and even then, she tried to avoid it until the very end. She already understood her feelings for him and made sure he lived. It's mentioned many times in the novel that he misunderstands their connection altogether. Their bond is more than just love; they're destined to be together, and this shadowy connection only gives them both bonuses. For some reason, they always trust each other with their lives, sacrificing themselves for each other. But when it comes to their connection, thousands of philosophical questions immediately arise: is it necessary and will Sunny regret it?

that isn't my point dude, also she used it againt him twice, forgotten shore and also 3rd nightmare, regardless, im saying that nephis holding that much power over sunny's free will is still unsettling, even if she never uses it, just knowing that someone having that much power over you, regardless of how destined you guys are, is still an imbalance, all im saying is let sunny also gain some sort of agency in the relationship, some kind of failsafe or literally anything, plus you saying the shadowy stuff is all bonuses is redundant, the whole thing is that nephis can use his powers to augment herself and also gets power over him, correct me if im wrong here, i dont think sunny gets any benefit from shadow bond, because nephis flames could heal him either way without it, and also now that their soverigns i remember that they cant use their powers on each other i think, but regardless, losing free will is a choice he will have to think more about, and hopefully since its sunny, and sunny doesn't play by the rules, he'll find some way to weave in a clause that changes it after obtaining all the weaves or some other shenanigans, my whole rant is literally just them having equal power over each other, and even better, if they both have no power over each other

In Effie's advice, everyone should trust each other, but at the same time, freedom of will is not lost in marriage, both people decide their own destinies and are responsible for this, and in the event of serious disagreements, they separate.

In Sunny's case, he is completely in the hands of his partner and even the slightest mistake, slip of the tongue, can ruin his life.

But at the same time, why wouldn't Nefis try giving the order: "from now on, it's up to him to decide whether he'll obey or not." In theory, this could free him from slavery, but would retain all the bonuses from the connection

By your logic, which is similar to Sunny's own, he'll later cry that she even gave him such an order. And for 50 chapters he'll reflect on how bad it was that he trusted her again. It's utter stupidity.

It's unlikely, since while the order itself will remain, it won't restrict Sunny's will or force him to act or to inaction.
Besides, Sunny had already received an order that served his interests in the pyramid, when Nephys ordered him not to die, and Sunny didn't complain after that.

i wonder, if everyone remembers him, would Nephis be mad at him for what he did at the 3rd nightmare? I mean i don't blame him, Someone having absolute control over you will always be bothersome even though there's unconditional love. Plus it's not like Nephis can control it, so she would constantly be watching her vocabulary and speech around sunny in order not to say a command

That's... an interesting comparison... I feel like both of them could've worded it better. Also being a slave to Nephis of all people y'know THE star of ruin idk man, personally if I was Sunny I'd try find another way not because I don't trust her but seeing all the possibilities where this could backfire in tons of situations

Well, thing is, Nephis has only ever used her master's privileges once. I feel like Rain wouldn't do it for fun, but maybe on accident. Reminding him who was in control. Then again, he could kill her before she makes a command, not that she would, even if it kills her not to. So if his master was Nephis, then he would be able to trust her never to command him, with the exception of mind control. If it was Rain, then it would be a much more equal trading of trust.

Mostly because Nephis does anything to get her way, we see in the forgotten shore that Sunny was willing to stay with Nephis yet she refused and forced him to leave. I know that seems pretty small but considering her ultimate goal is to eradicate the forgotten God idk I feel like it could lead to bad things happening. But I mean yeah being tied to Nephis is probably one of the best people he could be tied to

Would you rather put your faith or trust in humanity? Once you put either faith or trust on a human being, especially on a woman, that'll be Sunny's down fall. It's human nature to make mistakes, thats just the definition of human nature, we're not perfect. So unless neph becomes divine or a god, sunny shouldn't put his faith or trust on her just yet.
