Chapter 2516: Surrender

Some time later, they shared a kettle of fragrant tea while digesting their food in peace. Sunny warmed his hands on the cheap metal cup, letting the hot steam wash over his bruised face and chase some of the soreness away. Effie had stretched her legs under the table and crossed them, staring at her

tea with a distant expression.

Somewhere outside the diner, many sets of eyes were secretly observing them. Some of them belonged to the mysterious force that wanted Mordret dead, and was hoping to reach him by following the two detectives who had seen them last.

There was another pair of eyes, as well.

Sunny could not be entirely sure, but he was confident that the real Mordret was spying on them, as well. He had been protecting his nicer twin from the shadows, so not knowing where the CEO of Valor had been taken to was not something the Prince of Nothing could or would tolerate.

But there was nothing Sunny could do about any of that just yet.

Glancing at Effie, he took a sip of tea and asked:

"What are you thinking about?"

Effie was distracted from her thoughts and looked at him without her usual carefree smile.

She remained silent for a while, then said:

"The future."

Sunny raised an eyebrow.

"The future?"

Effie nodded.

"Yes. Not tomorrow, or the day after that. Not even the Fourth Nightmare and Supremacy, but… about what happens next."

He considered her words for a few moments.

"So, the end of the world."

He meant it quite literally. The waking world was already being slowly devoured by the Dream Realm, and that process was only going to accelerate exponentially in the coming years.

Before too long, there would be no waking world at all. It could last for another decade, or maybe even a few… but no longer than that.

Effie studied Sunny silently, then asked:

"When we become Supreme, you and Nephis are going to challenge the Fifth Nightmare, aren't you?"

Sunny hesitated for a while.

Actually, he was not sure how to answer that question.

He was still undecided… he still did not know if he was ready to fight for his fate, and the bonds that came with it, or abandon it forever and look for a different path to Apotheosis than the one offered by the Spell.

Eventually, he shrugged.

"If there is no better way, sure."

Now that he was reminded about the complicated choice looming over him, his thoughts turned in that direction.

Effie hesitated for a while.

"The Fifth Nightmare… Apotheosis. It changes you, doesn't it? Makes you more divine. But it also makes you leave some of your humanity behind."

Still consumed by his thoughts, Sunny raised an eyebrow.

"In a way. That is what I heard, at least. Why?"

Effie looked down.

"I am just wondering what will become of me after I attain Supremacy. Will I be able to stop there, or will I be forced to continue walking forward? And if I do… what I will have to leave behind."

She smiled wistfully.

"It will be ironic, won't it? If the only way to protect what I cherish most is to abandon it. I am… not sure that I would want to do something like that. That I am capable of it."

Sunny remained silent for a long time.

"That would be quite ironic, yes. Life is full of irony that way, I find."

Gods knew his life was.

Letting out a sigh, Sunny focused on his tea.

After enjoying its warmth for a while, he asked:

"Hey, Effie. Can I ask you a question?"

She smiled faintly.

"Go ahead."

Sunny chewed his lips for a few seconds.

"It is sort of a moral conundrum. Let's say that you love someone, and they love you back… but you can't be with that person unless you surrender to their will completely. Unless you trust them completely. Would you still do it?"

Effie stared at him with a neutral expression for a while.

Then, she frowned in confusion.

"Sure. What's the problem?"

Sunny blinked a few times.

"Now, I don't think you understand. In this scenario, the other person will have the ability to control you. They'll be able to end your life if they want, or force you to do things that you don't want to do. They might not ever use that ability… but they'll have it. You will be at their mercy — always, and absolutely."

Effie continued to stare at him in confusion.

"Yeah. And?"

Sunny was baffled, too.

What was this reaction?

"What do you mean, yeah? That's a serious problem, you know! How can you surrender yourself to someone else, just like that?"

Effie laughed quietly.

"That's just marriage, though?"

Sunny stared at her in complete bewilderment.

"What do you mean?"

Effie smiled and took a sip of her tea, then shrugged.

"Well, what you described simply sounds like marriage — what marriage is supposed to be, at least. Marriage is all about trust, after all. You have to

trust your partner, and they have to trust you. Naturally, nothing is absolute, and trust is not absolute either."

She leaned forward and gave him an amused look.

"But, Sunny… imagine entrusting your infant child to someone when you have to leave — defenseless, fragile, vulnerable… infinitely precious. That is what spouses all over the world do every day, and that is the level of trust they have in each other. If I trust my husband enough to surrender my son to

his care, why would I not trust him with my own life? My life seems trifling in comparison."

Effie shook her head and chuckled.

"Trusting them completely, giving them the power to influence what you do, and being at their mercy… always, and absolutely. That's just marriage. You

are supposed to surrender to the person you love — that's what love is. So, as long as the feeling is mutual, I don't see what the problem is. Not much of a conundrum, if you ask me."

Sunny just stared at her, completely stunned.

That… was definitely not a perspective he had ever considered before, or had even imagined before.

It was entirely ridiculous, bringing down his mystical existential dilemma down to earth so thoroughly that it suddenly seemed ordinary and mundane, not even worth mentioning.

As if there was no dilemma at all.

'That's just… what love is?'

Surrendering to someone...

Trusting them completely.

Sunny stared at Effie some more, then slowly shook his head.

"You're a insane woman, you know that?"

Effie scoffed.

"Oh, really? Remind me, which one of us frequents a psychiatrist?"

Sunny took a deep breath and looked down.

He really did not want to answer…

But sadly, he had to.

"...I do."

Effie nodded with satisfaction.

"Exactly, so don't go around pointing fingers at people… especially at insane people. They might bite it off."

Grinning, she raised her cup and finished her tea.

Outside, a stormy night was falling upon Mirage City.

Sunny is being hit with an intense level of gaslighting by the author here.
Why is enslaving himself to the whims of another person being presented as the 'mature' choice?
'Oh yeah bro, being an adult is all about accepting limitations and trusting others and yes, surrendering your will and becoming a dog is absolutely the best character development possible'.
He is still a dog now, but at least he is a dog who chooses to be a dog. Everyone is owed at least that single bit of freedom in my opinion, even if saying no takes everything away from you, the option to say no and struggle should still exist for someone to be considered a person.

“He is still a dog now, but at least he is a dog who chooses“

Yeah. From the beginning, it was clear that the only freedom in this world is the ability to choose your own chains.

Imma be honest, that take is absolutely dogshit. The thing with shadow bond is that they aren’t equal at all an neph already abused his trust and I’m sure that even after all the character development she would still do the same

Said the same thing in my comments and I’m glad there are those who thinks the same way. It’s the most stupid take I’ve seen from an author

Sunny was always making the whole thing more complicated than it had to be and I've been saying that. Neph is the best person to be bound to second to Kai cause she'll never misuse it.
I understand that the struggle to overcome your flaw makes you grow tho so Imma try and be patient while he works out what's obvious to my happily married ass

We saw her misuse it multiple times lol

If Neph and Sunny are in front of the Spell and Sunny doesn't want to destroy it, Neph would definitely order Sunny to do it anyway.

She loves Sunny, sure. But we know how driven by her goals she is.

She only misused it once and it was before she made her promise not to do it ever again. The time when he was literally killing himself doesn't count because there was no other way to save him. Yeah, it sucks, but Sunny should suck it up, but he's not that mature yet

          That doesn't mean much.
In the tower, Sunny and Nephis clashedm That's what triggered her to enslave Sunny.

Since then, Sunny and Nephis never had a real argument.
As such, she's never proved that, given the sake circumstances, she wouldn't reenact the same things.
In all 2000 chapters, we've never seen Nephis compromise on her goals once.
She's litterally willing to kill millions to achieve them. A promise is nothing in comparison.

I find Cassie significantly more trustworthy in comparison.
Her fault is small compared to Nephis's, yet Cassie went on a multi year plan to correct her mistake.
          Where's Nephis's redemption arc?

Usually I'm left in deep thought when g3 does the philosophical talks/debates but for once, this time i completely disagree with the ideas g3 suggesting here.

Sunny's case can NOT be treated as equivalent to marriage. Marriage goes both ways, both person trust each other and at the same time, maintains their own free will in the relationship. But in Sunny's case, neph will have insane amount of advantage over sunny cuz of the shadow bond. And even if she never uses it, it does not mean that makes their relationship equal

In fact, I don't think she will misuse it if we go this route but I'm 90% sure smth like what happened at crimson spire is gonna repeat. Except this time on larger scale. And not being able to help becuz of her hero syndrome is gonna be 100x more hurtful to sunny this time. Hope nothin like that happens sigh

i’m just wondering how everyone will treat him if he gets his fate back. will he be sunny, their friend through life and death? or sunny the funny approachable sovereign? will they ever be able to treat him like normal? relationships are so fragile yet are so deep that you don’t know what will happen if he does get his fate back

Firstly, if you think about it this way, then in general almost everyone has some kind of power over each other. When they were sleeping, the saints, for example, had power over them; anyone could do whatever they wanted with them. Secondly, when Sunny and Nephis were training in his house and they learned that he could strengthen her with shadows, they said that her fire could strengthen his shadows. They have mutual bonuses, but only Sunny has a minus.

All the characters tell him there's no problem with this, and he's discussed it with various characters numerous times. And everyone insists there's nothing wrong with it and that they're looking at it incorrectly.

am i the only one that wished him and nephis would be love partners before they completely forgot about him, it just makes their romance more interesting, because she would have seen him in his lowest points, both would have seen each other in their lowest, when they were desperate to survive in their first Nightmare Seeds and Forgoten Shore and so on. But in reality Sunny just appeared infront of Nephis as handsome, cool, bizarre blacksmith, cafe owner and Lord of Shadows. Their moments in 3rd NM was the best interaction ever between the 2, when they were in their last phases to confess each other.

"Well, what you described sounds just like marriage—at least what marriage should be. After all, marriage is all about trust."
The problem with this trust is that only one side has power, and that side is completely insane and has very different opinions. The most Effie and the Husband disagree about is who gets to use they dick in the bed today

    Urgh, bad vibes.

Honestly, at this point just make a memory that does the same to Nephis. That way they can be each other slaves. Truly a marriage.
