Chapter 2302: Exquisite Fiend

Kai lifted an eyebrow.

"In what way?"

Sunny shrugged.

"Well, for starters, there are formations carved into the main channel and into the sides of the magma chamber. I guess the entire area was occupied once, in earlier times."

The formations were too damaged and warped by the flow of time and the harsh environment, so Sunny didn't observe much about who had constructed them and for what purpose. However, the ruins resembled almost like the remnants of an ancient settlement, or at least an inhabited complex. The few buildings that were somewhat intact reminded him of the Jade Palace and the massive stone bridge in front of it.

Curiously enough, the settlement appeared to have featured a pattern of defensive barriers. Those barriers hadn't been erected to shield it from the enemies descending the vents of the volcano, though... instead, they were facing the base of the magma chamber, as if protecting the ruins from something that might rise from the molten core of the earth.

Sunny had cooled sufficiently to dismiss his helmet. Conjuring the Endless Spring, he splashed cold water onto his damp face and grinned.

"Oh, and there are ancient skeletons filling every crack and hollow there. Given that they hadn't been reduced to dust by the lava, the beings they had belonged to must have been quite robust. And there were quite... quite many of them."

Kai frowned.

"Could it be that the Corrupted Tyrant..."

Sunny shook his head.

"No. That creature seemed too feeble to have slain them, let alone created them. I'd say that all these beings didn't even perish in the volcano. I think someone just dumped them down, like disposing of refuse."

Kai grew slightly cautious after hearing those words.

"Who could have performed something like that?"

Sunny chuckled softly, then winced and coughed when smoke entered his lungs.

"Ah, blast it... who do you suppose? Must have been the Jade Queen. By the way, can we exit from here?"

Their mission accomplished, they moved away from the brink of the bottomless chasm. As they did, Kai asked tentatively:

"Jade Queen?"

Sunny glimpsed at him and clicked his tongue.

"You understand nothing, do you? Have you not examined your Citadel at all? Huh! I guess our resident Mr. Perfect isn't that flawless, after all."

Kai just smiled.

"I never declared myself flawless. And admittedly... academics has always been my weaker area."

The notion of Kai being inferior at something that Sunny excelled at felt oddly gratifying.

'I knew it. That guy just glided through existence on nothing but attractive features before encountering me!'

Sunny had been such a beneficial influence on that simpleton. Who could have desired a better companion?

He scoffed.

"Well... to be fair, I don't comprehend that much about the Jade Queen either. She was the initial owner of the Jade Palace — actually, it was constructed for her."

He reflected on what little he understood about the history of Ravenheart — most of it glimpsed from the random Memories he had acquired here and there...

Including the most unforgettable one, the Sin of Solace, which he had received for dispatching the Remnant of the Jade Queen after it was severely wounded by Saint Tyris.

That cursed sword played quite a significant role in his existence, altering its entire direction.

Sunny shivered.

"You must realize that the Tomb of Ariel was built by Ariel, the Demon of Dread. Apparently, he also constructed the Jade Palace for a breathtaking fiend whom he established as a queen. He also bestowed the ominous gift of forbidden knowledge upon her... whatever that implies. Ariel was called the Demon of Dread, he was also the Demon of Truth — so, he must have shared with her some horrific truths."

He paused for a few moments, then added in a brighter tone:

"Well, anyway. The Jade Queen appeared to have quite the authority in the ancient past, presiding over the Jade Court. She was renowned across numerous realms for her elegance and insight — so much so that many travelers sought to gain an audience with her, enduring the snow and ash. Not everyone endured the journey... and not everyone survived the Jade Queen's welcome, either. Apparently, she had a tendency of transforming those who gazed at her strangely into Nightmare Creatures. Well, some type of creatures, at least."

Kai listened to him attentively, captivated by the account. Eventually, he asked:

"So... that Jade Queen truly resided in Ravenheart once?"

Sunny chuckled.

"Certainly. You might even be resting in her former quarters... but that is basically all the information about the Jade Queen I possess. I don't even know what she resembled. She might have been an insect, for all I know."

The Remnant of the Jade Queen had been, at least. A massive, oddly elegant beetle. But that didn't really prove anything.

Kai slowly shook his head.

"The throne of the Jade Palace is designed for a human, though."

Sunny shrugged.

"Perhaps she was an unusual monster who possessed a Transformation Ability that allowed her to become human. Who knows what Ariel did to her? That guy created the Great River, so we understand how peculiar his creations were."

He hesitated for a while, and then added:

"He must have valued the Jade Queen greatly, though. Enough so for Nether to mark the Jade Palace on the wall of the Ebony Tower."

Kai remained quiet for a while, then asked with a trace of melancholy in his voice:

"So what do you believe happened to the Jade Queen? Where did she vanish to?"

Sunny gave him a lengthy gaze.

'What an odd question.'

"How would I know? Perhaps the truth she bore destroyed her. Maybe someone grew envious of her poise and her elegance, and demolished her. Maybe she accompanied Ariel into the Doom War and died on one of its battlefields."

He paused for a moment, then sighed.

"I encountered a Corrupted Tyrant called the Remnant of the Jade Queen once. If that was what remained of her... then her conclusion must not have been joyful or elegant."

Rather, it would have been grotesque.

By then, they had ascended high enough for Kai to take flight comfortably. Sunny once again concealed himself in his shadow.

As Kai soared across the sky above Ravenheart, a few individuals stopped and gazed upward, indicating his tiny silhouette with smiles on their faces. Of course, he wasn't in his dragon form at the moment, so there was no throng of amazed onlookers.

Soon enough, Kai descended on the surface of the great stone bridge and walked toward the Jade Palace. The magnificent obsidian structure loomed above him, casting a deep shadow... Sunny felt a hint of wonder at that moment, as well.

He had spent several years trying to slip into the Jade Palace undetected, without success. The Raven Queen has been too mighty and enigmatic, and her daughters were too vigilant.

But now, Ki Song was gone, her daughters were distributed across the Dream Realm, and Sunny was a Sovereign himself. The entrances of the Jade Palace stood open for him, and he could enter freely.

He was filled with excitement.

'I wonder what I'll uncover inside.'

    2303 Jade Palace

The Jade Palace was vast. It was not quite the size of Bastion, which was a stone city in and of itself, but still complicated enough to be like an enormous labyrinth. Interestingly enough, while its exterior had at some point turned entirely black, its inner walls were still pristine and white, as if cut from flawless jade.

There were innumerable halls, corridors, chambers, stairwells, and passages, all interconnected into a sprawling maze. Even more confusing was the fact that some sections of the palace seemed to have been built with humans in mind, while some were far more daunting in scale, clearly meant for creatures of towering size. Despite the fact that the radiant palace had stood empty for thousands of years, it was still emanating a subtle feeling of elegant opulence and majesty.

There were stone gardens within the black walls of Ravenheart, many statues and intricate reliefs, great pools of icy water, and even bubbling hot springs. More than that, the Jade Palace stretched far underground - and lower still, its foundation opened into a vast system of ice caves that hid inside the lonesome mountain. Those caves had been where the Queen of Worms had kept her great army of dead puppets.

Less than a hundred Awakened had made the Jade Palace their home during her mother's rule. Later, it became known as Ravenheart, serving as the Citadel of the Great Clan Song - tens of thousands of Awakened warriors were anchored to its Gateway then, with numerous Masters and Saints living under its roof.

By now, there were hundreds of thousands of Awakened anchored at the Jade Palace, and although the retainers of Clan Song had scattered to serve Seishan and her sisters in various Citadels across the western reaches of the Dream Realm, Kai's subordinates took their place. Most of them were Nightsingers, who had been following Kai since the Southern Campaign. The rest of his staff was composed of local Awakened, government agents, emissaries of the Immortal Flame clan - some of whom had been retainers of the Valor before - and assistants sent over by the daughters of Ki Song.

There were a few members of the Shadow Clan hidden among them, as well.

The palace had been roughly divided into three areas. The smallest one surrounded the Gateway and was open to the public. A larger area was meant for Kai and his people - it was carefully maintained and tended to, giving the feeling of a radiant and inhabited space. Finally, the largest area by far was uninhabited. Awakened soldiers patrolled it regularly, but other than that, there was usually not a soul in sight. Most of the magnificent palace stood empty, shrouded in silence.

Sunny did not know what he was looking for, but he figured out that his shadow sense would discover any anomaly rapidly. Sadly, there were a few obstacles standing in his way.

    'Damnation. I knew it…'

On the first evening, after Kai was done with his duties as the Steward of the West, the two of them had a meal together. However, Sunny was in a dour mood. Kai gave him a curious look.

'Is the food not to your taste, Sunny?'

    Sunny shook his head.

'No, the food is good. It's just that this place is giving me trouble.' He remained quiet for a few seconds, then sighed and leaned back. 'First of all, my spatial Ability barely works within these walls. Secondly, my senses are being blocked by something - it is like I have to fight against all this jade to perceive what is hidden behind it.'

    Kai smiled.

'Ah. I experienced it as well. I can't see through the walls of the Jade Palace at all.'

Sunny picked up a piece of tender meat and bit it fiercely, then waved what remained in the air.

'I am not surprised, though. You know… one time, I got pretty hungry, so I snuck inside a Great Monster to carve out some meat. I did procure the meat, but getting out proved to be a problem - some of my powers were being suppressed, just like here. Because I was inside of a living being, well, a corpse of a living being.'

Kai sighed and raised his wine glass with a trembling hand.

'So it was the corpse of a Great Monster. Thank the gods.'

Sunny ignored his remark and swallowed the rest of the meat.

'We know that Ariel liked to use unconventional building methods and materials. Who knows how he created the Jade Palace? Its walls have no seams at all. Almost as if this entire structure had been cast instead of being constructed… or grown. In any case, exploring it will take more time than I hoped.'

    Kai smiled.

'Well, there is a lot to explore. A lot of spectacular things to see, as well as things that inspire awe. I haven't had time to see most of the Jade Palace myself yet, but sometimes I stop to look around and think… great beings once walked these halls. Gods and demons once rested in this garden, just like I am resting here now. Isn't it amazing?'

Sunny scratched the back of his head.

'Well, yeah. But I am sort of used to stuff like that. One of my incarnations lives in the Tower of Hope, after all. I brushed sides with a god once - oh, I also swallowed a piece of a daemon. As for breathtaking things, you should really come explore the Shadow Realm with me sometime. The view is to die for… literally…' He laughed.

Kai did, too. Granted, his laugh sounded a little stifled.

'Yeah… possibly I should…' He paused for a few seconds, then asked cautiously: 'So, how long do you think it will take you to find what you are looking for?'

    Sunny shrugged.

'I'll start exploring earnestly starting tomorrow. After that, it is all up to luck. Why?'

    Kai shook his head.

'Nothing, really. It's just that I'm expecting guests in a few days. The Song sisters are going to be in Ravenheart for business - a couple of them, at least. They don't know that the Lord of Shadows is alive, but I don't think that avoiding their gaze will trouble you.'

    Sunny coughed.

'Sure. But, just in case… is Seishan coming?'

    Kai raised an eyebrow.

'I think so. Why are you asking?'

    Sunny grimaced.

'That one… has sharp senses. I'll be careful.' He remained quiet for a bit, then shrugged. 'Come to think of it, perhaps I won't. After all, those Song sisters had lived in the Jade Palace the longest. So if we want to find what we're looking for rapidly, wouldn't we want to get their assistance?'

    Kai sighed.

'That is true. However, I am not sure they will be willing to help you.'

    Sunny grinned.

'Don't worry about it. I can be very persuasive when I need to.' He pointed to himself proudly. 'Do you want to know how persuasive I am, Nightingale? Not to brag, but one time, I convinced a dead man to help me by promising to kill him…'

It's already the great citadel of Oblivion, it's just that no one knows about it because, well, everyone has forgotten Oblivion)

In general, although it's not explicitly mentioned, it seems like all the weaves are scattered around the daemon citadels or their neighborhoods. The only exception to this is Weaver, who was homeless. But who knows, maybe the temple on the Forgotten Shore was his refuge and the priestess served him, and after her exposure she was imprisoned in a dungeon.

We still don't have a reasonable theory to explain this covo between Anviel and his Jester :"A new sword?"

    Anvil nodded silently.
    "It's Condemnation."

Saint Jest clicked his tongue and studied the dreadful blade for a few moments. Then, he shuddered and quickly shook his head.

"I presume the kids did not see?"

The King of Swords glanced at him, then shrugged.

"By the time they came to their senses, I had already turned it into a Memory."
