Chapter 2302: Exquisite Fiend

Kai lifted an eyebrow.

"In what way?"

Sunny shrugged.

"Well, for starters, there are formations carved into the main channel and into the sides of the magma chamber. I guess the entire area was occupied once, in earlier times."

The formations were too damaged and warped by the flow of time and the harsh environment, so Sunny didn't observe much about who had constructed them and for what purpose. However, the ruins resembled almost like the remnants of an ancient settlement, or at least an inhabited complex. The few buildings that were somewhat intact reminded him of the Jade Palace and the massive stone bridge in front of it.

Curiously enough, the settlement appeared to have featured a pattern of defensive barriers. Those barriers hadn't been erected to shield it from the enemies descending the vents of the volcano, though... instead, they were facing the base of the magma chamber, as if protecting the ruins from something that might rise from the molten core of the earth.

Sunny had cooled sufficiently to dismiss his helmet. Conjuring the Endless Spring, he splashed cold water onto his damp face and grinned.

"Oh, and there are ancient skeletons filling every crack and hollow there. Given that they hadn't been reduced to dust by the lava, the beings they had belonged to must have been quite robust. And there were quite... quite many of them."

Kai frowned.

"Could it be that the Corrupted Tyrant..."

Sunny shook his head.

"No. That creature seemed too feeble to have slain them, let alone created them. I'd say that all these beings didn't even perish in the volcano. I think someone just dumped them down, like disposing of refuse."

Kai grew slightly cautious after hearing those words.

"Who could have performed something like that?"

Sunny chuckled softly, then winced and coughed when smoke entered his lungs.

"Ah, blast it... who do you suppose? Must have been the Jade Queen. By the way, can we exit from here?"

Their mission accomplished, they moved away from the brink of the bottomless chasm. As they did, Kai asked tentatively:

"Jade Queen?"

Sunny glimpsed at him and clicked his tongue.

"You understand nothing, do you? Have you not examined your Citadel at all? Huh! I guess our resident Mr. Perfect isn't that flawless, after all."

Kai just smiled.

"I never declared myself flawless. And admittedly... academics has always been my weaker area."

The notion of Kai being inferior at something that Sunny excelled at felt oddly gratifying.

'I knew it. That guy just glided through existence on nothing but attractive features before encountering me!'

Sunny had been such a beneficial influence on that simpleton. Who could have desired a better companion?

He scoffed.

"Well... to be fair, I don't comprehend that much about the Jade Queen either. She was the initial owner of the Jade Palace — actually, it was constructed for her."

He reflected on what little he understood about the history of Ravenheart — most of it glimpsed from the random Memories he had acquired here and there...

Including the most unforgettable one, the Sin of Solace, which he had received for dispatching the Remnant of the Jade Queen after it was severely wounded by Saint Tyris.

That cursed sword played quite a significant role in his existence, altering its entire direction.

Sunny shivered.

"You must realize that the Tomb of Ariel was built by Ariel, the Demon of Dread. Apparently, he also constructed the Jade Palace for a breathtaking fiend whom he established as a queen. He also bestowed the ominous gift of forbidden knowledge upon her... whatever that implies. Ariel was called the Demon of Dread, he was also the Demon of Truth — so, he must have shared with her some horrific truths."

He paused for a few moments, then added in a brighter tone:

"Well, anyway. The Jade Queen appeared to have quite the authority in the ancient past, presiding over the Jade Court. She was renowned across numerous realms for her elegance and insight — so much so that many travelers sought to gain an audience with her, enduring the snow and ash. Not everyone endured the journey... and not everyone survived the Jade Queen's welcome, either. Apparently, she had a tendency of transforming those who gazed at her strangely into Nightmare Creatures. Well, some type of creatures, at least."

Kai listened to him attentively, captivated by the account. Eventually, he asked:

"So... that Jade Queen truly resided in Ravenheart once?"

Sunny chuckled.

"Certainly. You might even be resting in her former quarters... but that is basically all the information about the Jade Queen I possess. I don't even know what she resembled. She might have been an insect, for all I know."

The Remnant of the Jade Queen had been, at least. A massive, oddly elegant beetle. But that didn't really prove anything.

Kai slowly shook his head.

"The throne of the Jade Palace is designed for a human, though."

Sunny shrugged.

"Perhaps she was an unusual monster who possessed a Transformation Ability that allowed her to become human. Who knows what Ariel did to her? That guy created the Great River, so we understand how peculiar his creations were."

He hesitated for a while, and then added:

"He must have valued the Jade Queen greatly, though. Enough so for Nether to mark the Jade Palace on the wall of the Ebony Tower."

Kai remained quiet for a while, then asked with a trace of melancholy in his voice:

"So what do you believe happened to the Jade Queen? Where did she vanish to?"

Sunny gave him a lengthy gaze.

'What an odd question.'

"How would I know? Perhaps the truth she bore destroyed her. Maybe someone grew envious of her poise and her elegance, and demolished her. Maybe she accompanied Ariel into the Doom War and died on one of its battlefields."

He paused for a moment, then sighed.

"I encountered a Corrupted Tyrant called the Remnant of the Jade Queen once. If that was what remained of her... then her conclusion must not have been joyful or elegant."

Rather, it would have been grotesque.

By then, they had ascended high enough for Kai to take flight comfortably. Sunny once again concealed himself in his shadow.

As Kai soared across the sky above Ravenheart, a few individuals stopped and gazed upward, indicating his tiny silhouette with smiles on their faces. Of course, he wasn't in his dragon form at the moment, so there was no throng of amazed onlookers.

Soon enough, Kai descended on the surface of the great stone bridge and walked toward the Jade Palace. The magnificent obsidian structure loomed above him, casting a deep shadow... Sunny felt a hint of wonder at that moment, as well.

He had spent several years trying to slip into the Jade Palace undetected, without success. The Raven Queen has been too mighty and enigmatic, and her daughters were too vigilant.

But now, Ki Song was gone, her daughters were distributed across the Dream Realm, and Sunny was a Sovereign himself. The entrances of the Jade Palace stood open for him, and he could enter freely.

He was filled with excitement.

'I wonder what I'll uncover inside.'

We still don't have a reasonable theory to explain the dialog between the two Sunny's at the estuary.
    * Was he juggling a mask, answering questions?
    * Or were there two shadows, one masked and one unmasked, taking turns answering?
    * Was there a Spirit who overcame a flaw?

    Your options, guys.

Even if there was two incarnations the two will be forced to answered when ask. The most probable he took the mask when he didn't want say the truth, that's why he was hiding so Sunny can't tell if what he said was a lie or not.

He is forced to answer when the question is aimed directly at him. But he can also remain silent when the question is indirect or not explicitly directed at him.
For example, in the scene when Anvil asked the seven incarnations a question, only one could answer if he tried to imagine that the question was asked to only one.

In the estuary, he deliberately hid in the shadows to make it appear as if the question was asked not to him, but to his copy. This could explain the long pauses after the questions.

When Anvil asked if it was him who made the sword the seven answered: 6 yes, 1 no.

The presence of an other incarnation is useless since he can put and retire the mask depending of what he want answer. That's why he hide, to not Sunny see if he's wearing the mask or not.

I don't deny this version, I just find it a bit silly. Putting on and taking off a mask to fool a past version of yourself? Why all the extra movement? The two incarnations version seems a lot more funny.

More funny maybe but I maintain all incarnations would be forced to answer the moment they hear his question directed to the person who control the shadow. That's how I see it. And the blank can be explain by that.

here's another dialog in favor of my theory, chapter 2299:
"So... will you need to cross the Hollow Mountains? Or bring your entire Citadel to Ravenheart?"
            "Not really."
            Kai released a relieved breath.
"Thank the... wait. Who said that?!"

Good catch, maybe we should ask the author if there a rule about which incarnation is supposed to answer or if Sunny is free. There also the case when one wear the mask, does it changes something?

But is there a problem with Sunny taking and retiring the mask when he needs?
Honestly it doesn't change anything, he lie or say the truth when he wants in both case.

I remembered something, the weaver's blood and bones were obtained by Sunny from the dream world (the original version), but the weaver's spirit obtained them from the third nightmare, which means the original piece is still inside Ariel's real tomb.
When Master Sunny met his future self who he said was somewhere between a Saint and a Sovereign, I think he weakened himself on purpose.
I mean since the spell gives those who defy nightmares an identity closest to their power (in the first nightmare Sunny was a slave in a slave caravan and the second nightmare a shadow creature), but in the third it was his true self because sovereign Sunny entered the real pyramid and the spell made a clone of him in the third nightmare, so how will the clone Sunny get the real name he got back from the thieving bird to the real Sunny? Or will there be two Sunnys in the end? The original and the one who came out of the spell?

which means the original piece is still inside Ariel's real tomb.
I'm not sure, it's possible the Thieving Bird already eat it in real tomb before it died.

Maybe the Thieving Bird from the nightmare seed didn't touch it because it knew it was a fake world. Or maybe the bird needed Sunny to obtain soul weave to take his fate? Maybe Sunny would't have survived without it. Anyway there was certainly a reason the bird let this weave to Sunny. Other possibility, it wants Sunny to obtain all the weaves before it take it them all.

When Master Sunny met his future self who he said was somewhere between a Saint and a Sovereign, I think he weakened himself on purpose.
He only conclude his future self is above transcendance, nothing else.

Or will there be two Sunnys in the end? The original and the one who came out of the spell?
There only one Sunny, the future self he met in the seed disappeared at the end of the nightmare.

They were, that's the difference between a second and a third nightmare, but they still replaced characters of the story, for eg Cassie took the place of Dusk and the inhabitants treat her like the real Sybil. Sunny and Nephis replaced their future self.

I think it was different. The Source is literally “the time before the beginning of time” and exists in a singular instance, that is one in both the present and nightmares. Therefore the weave was also singular and real.

Of the three weaves we know of, two were obtained through a physical object and one through a memory. From this we can conclude that the Spell is capable of manipulating remains that contain parts of the weave. Just as the Spell turned the physical properties of Citadels into Components, so too was a drop of ichor turned from a physical object into a Memory. I assume that a similar trick was done with the fruit over Oblivion's tomb. The spell made it invisible or nonexistent to the nightmare creature, and the bird in particular, this may explain why the bird didn't eat it.

If there was no trick, however, there must be an explanation for the bird's behavior. Perhaps it decided to wait to catch the really “big score” - let that little boy collect all the sparkles for me! It's hard to speculate at this point.

I have a theory about the purpose of the spell. All in all it's final purpose is to find someone worthy of weavers legacy so that the eventual champion will kill or do something about the forgotten god. I might be reaching but think about it, I'm on my first reread.

Yeah probably similar. Definitely the end goal is to produce a being at the divine rank to probably combat the Forgotten God. I’m unsure if the Spells specific goal is to make sure someone inherits the weave of the Weaver but idk. I think at this point it was probably somewhere in Sunny’s fate that he would be the one to collect all the weaves of the Weaver.

Chapter 1334: Dire promise.... "Neph… let's kill the Mad Prince."

    His voice slowly grew stronger.
"Let's kill that wretch, and the rest of the Six Plagues with him. Let's slaughter the Defiled. Let's burn Verge to the ground."

He gritted his teeth and leaned forward, his eyes burning with dark murderous intent.

"Let's conquer this horrid Nightmare." Sunny's words hung in the air for a moment, and were then carried away by the wind. Nephis remained silent for a while.

Then, she smiled, white flames igniting in her eyes. "...It's a promise."

Imagine Nephis gets mad at Sunny after she gets her memories back cus he broke his promise to her, maybe that's why the chain breaker looked destroyed in the 3rd nightmare and why Supreme Sunny(in the 3rd nightmare) asked Master Sunny to turn back?... Thoughts 💭?

She definitely will but probably also be relieved she remembers him. It does make me wonder though when Sunny ultimately regains his fate and stuff how would G3 handle that scenario? Would everyone just randomly remember Sunny? Could it also be like they was no gap in their memory and they just originally thought they always knew who Sunny was? Basically what I mean is would they be aware that they had a gap in their memory?

I suspect it’ll be like a puzzle piece clicking back into place, yk? Mainly on account of his “fate” and “unfatedness” existing independently of each other since he was obviously able to build something new from what seems like nothing. I do wonder what the consequence of him reconnecting to fate will be though, and if it has anything to do with the surge of nightmare gates caused in Antarctica, as Professor Obel hinted at with his theory of time rippling forward and backward. I’m more curious to the point raised by OP with his companion’s reactions. I def think it’ll cause a rift between him and neph and it’ll be something they come back stronger from, or is a point of future major conflict between him and the cohort even after they “reunite”

I don’t know. Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the spell a weave with the strings of fate? Sunny being cut from fate and coming back might have another moment of forgetfulness. Although they remember the young sunny, the older sunny would poof? Idk author probably wouldn’t do that because the dream realm would be in a perilous state without anyone remembering him. No shadow clan to keep things in check

No I think the author said in one of the previous chapters that Broken Sword obtained the Shadow weave most likely and it’s with his remains in the Underworld filled with darkness. It will probably be the last stop of Sunny’s knowing how the plot will probably move.

Also I don't think spiritual weave increase your will, I think spiritual is more your connection to the world, like Rain.
