Chapter 2296: Teaching and Learning

Rain knew that she had a talent for the Sorcery of Names. In fact, she was more or less born to be a Shaper.

Humans all spoke the same language these days, but before the Dark Times, people of Earth had spoken all kinds of them. Pieces of these languages still remained, passed down among family members for generations, and academics had to learn the basics of a few if they wished to study the past. Of course, there were powerful machines capable of translating ancient texts for them, as well.

Then there was the Dream Realm and the Nightmare Spell, which translated the dead languages of the fallen civilizations for the Awakened. There was the language that the Nightmare Spell itself used, too. Rain had not understood why her brother insisted on teaching her these dead languages, but in hindsight, it was a very useful skill to have.

She had noticed that countless of the Dream Realm languages were similar to each other a long time ago, almost as if they shared a common source. The runic language of the Nightmare Spell was the closest to that source, but it was still merely an adaptation of it.

Having studied Shaping for a while now, Rain had come to believe that there was one true language out there, woven into the very fabric of existence, a language where every word was a True Name.

The language of the gods.

Unlike the human languages, which had been invented, this one was inherent to reality, both shaped by the world and shaping the world. Therefore, speaking the words of that language was no different from reshaping the world. That was what Shapers did.

By channeling True Names and assembling them into Verses, they could change the world in accordance with their will. However, not just anyone could become a Shaper.

The knowledge of True Names was esoteric and lost. Anyone could learn the True Names as long as they found one, though, and yet, very few could actually speak them. After all, these Names were never meant to be spoken by a human. They were meant to be spoken by the gods.

Most people simply did not have the talent to master the True Names, but rare individuals like Rain and Lady Nephis could, to a degree. Still, it wasn't easy.

The True Names were elusive. Even learning one did not mean that you could know it. The knowledge of a True Name was effervescent, straining to erase itself, as if something that was not supposed to be retained by a human mind — like an object placed into an ill-fitting vessel.

Speaking the True Names was difficult, too. Even if one had the talent, they had to practice relentlessly in order to realize it. Then, there was the act of invoking the True Names itself — channeling them required a deep well of endurance, soul power, and a firm will. Faltering during an invocation could not only ruin the sorcery, but also harm the sorcerer.

And finally, there was the process of assembling the Verses. That aspect of Shaping was not particularly hard or punishing, but demanded a lot of creativity from the Shaper. That was the part Rain enjoyed the most.

Lady Nephis was the only other Shaper she knew, and it was interesting to see how different their talents were. Overall, Rain judged herself to be a more talented Shaper, which did not mean that she was a more powerful one, though.

Due to her innate Attribute, [Poet], Rain could learn and speak True Names easily. Building Verses came naturally to her, as well. However, Lady Nephis was indomitable. Once she learned a True Name, that Name could never escape her — therefore, she carried an astonishingly broad library of them in her mind.

And while Rain had an easier time speaking the Names, her teacher could channel them much more effectively due to how uncompromising her will was.

Rain was not really sure, but she strongly suspected that neither of them was an ordinary Shaper. True Shapers of the ancient past could neither have invoked the Sorcery of Names as easily as Rain could nor have known as countless Names as Lady Nephis knew, most likely. Therefore, they would have probably been astonished by the speed with which both of them were absorbing Shaping.

Today's lesson was, honestly, a bit alarming. The True Names Lady Nephis spoke were so violent and calamitous that Rain wasn't sure she could channel them without destroying her own soul. Her teacher, of course, had no such problem — there did not exist a Name that Lady Nephis would not dare invoke, and no Name she would fail to tame.

After a while, Rain was covered in sweat and trembling from exhaustion. Her essence was on the verge of running out.

‘Let us finish here.’

Nodding, Rain collapsed on the floor. There was no furniture in the spacious chamber, but she was happy to feel the cool touch of the stone plates. After a while, she sat up and smiled.

“I am not sure I will ever need to speak such horrible Names, teacher. After all, I want to be a builder, not a natural disaster.”

Lady Nephis smiled faintly.

“Creation and destruction are two sides of the same coin, Rain. You can't neglect one if you want to master the other.”

Rain frowned a little, contemplating her words. Well, it made sense. If she wanted to build a bridge, she had to know all the ways in which the bridge could collapse — otherwise, she wouldn't be able to design it solidly enough to weather the burden of its own weight.

Still, she didn't want to focus on learning True Names that could be of use in a battle too much.

Rain lingered for a while, then summoned the Bag of Withholding and pulled out a stack of paper, each page filled with neat, pretty handwriting.

“Here is the new revision.”

She touched her hair in embarrassment. “I did my best to expand on the points you asked for. It is a bit hard to put into words, though. I am sorry.”

Lady Nephis took the papers from her, studied them briefly, and nodded.

“Thank you, Rain.”

Her expression grew a little wistful. After a few seconds of silence, Lady Nephis sighed.

“You must be curious about how things are going, right?”

Rain would lie if she said that she wasn't.

In truth, she had come to Bastion not only to learn. She had also come here to teach.

...

Lady Nephis shook her head slightly.

“None of them have learned to control their soul essence yet, let alone attempted to form a soul core. However, there is good news as well. Two volunteers are now showing initial signs of being able to sense their essence — a promising result, to say the least. I am sure we will have our first success eventually.”

She glanced into the window.

“Of course, by now, we have no choice but to admit that natural Awakening will never be as quick as the path offered by the Nightmare Spell. And the Awakened who do emerge that way in the future would most likely never be as fearsome as those forged and tempered by the Spell. Still, their power will supplement the power of humanity just as well, we just have to be mindful of the cost.”

The easiest way to help a mundane person Awaken naturally was to let them absorb soul shards of Awakened Nightmare Creatures. However, there were more and more carriers of the Nightmare Spell in the world these days, and all of them needed to saturate their cores in order to reach the pinnacle of their power. So, natural Awakening did promise to produce a tectonic shift in the fate of humanity — however, it was not a panacea to the problems that plagued it.

Lady Nephis glanced at the papers in her hand and smiled softly.

“Still — thank you, Rain. One day in the future, when the world becomes kind enough, children will not have to become fearsome warriors anymore. When that day comes, this effort of yours will save countless lives. No words can express my gratitude.”

Rain glanced away and blushed.

“T-That, that is alright! All I did was hunt a few Nightmare Creatures with big brother's help, fall into a canyon, and trek across a muddy plain. It was not a big deal.”

Lady Nephis chuckled quietly and patted Rain on the shoulder.

“I hope you didn't include this observation in your notes. We wouldn't want our volunteers to start jumping into random canyons, would we?”

These AI chapters sure is understandable to some extent but it is ruining the experience and the novel itself. Can't we just find corrections to the original chapters and put our own few misspells? Maybe we can replace synonyms to a few words too.

    C2297: Evening in Bastion

The sun was already sinking behind Bastion when Nephis arrived at her large room at the top of the Ivory Tower. The horizon glowed with a magnificent blaze of crimson and amber tones, while the sky above the Mirror Lake had transformed into a rich shade of indigo, countless stars sparkling on its velvet background like silver ornaments.

The bright circle of the full moon was climbing higher, too...

The darkness had grown dense and blurry, cloaking the world.

As Nephis stepped onto the balcony and gazed downward, Sunny emerged from her shadow and embraced her from behind, placing his chin on her shoulder.

    "Difficult day?"

Nephis breathed deeply, then released a lengthy exhale.

    "...Yeah."

Together they watched the moon's image drift across the water's surface in silence. Eventually, Sunny tightened his hold slightly.

"You can sleep without worry tonight. I'm watching over everything."

In reality, Nephis wasn't always present in Bastion. Much of her time was devoted to various combat zones — in the hazy waters of the Stormsea, in the frightening territories south of Godgrave, in the brutal chill of the frozen wasteland west of Ravenheart. If not there, she was guiding humanity into conflict in the waking world, even when the world itself hindered her abilities and resisted her existence.

She was striving hard to delay the breakdown of human society on Earth and ready the Dream Realm for the influx of countless refugees who would escape their failing world. Beyond everything else, she was constantly hunting for additional Citadels — those that remained undiscovered and unconquered, all to strengthen the Human Domain as much as possible and smooth the path for the human Sovereigns who would follow in her footsteps.

Sunny was battling too, though in a more secretive way.

But every month, when the full moon appeared over Bastion, both Nephis and Sunny needed to be present.

This was because the Cursed Demon they had released upon the actual Mirror Lake to halt Mordred still lurked there, concealed in reflections. It remained safely trapped on the opposite side of the Great Mirror most days, but during these few nights when the border between the two versions of Bastion grew weak, its sinister influence occasionally slipped through the moon's reflection.

That was why they needed to maintain vigilance.

Nephs rested her hands on his and reclined slightly in his sturdy embrace, allowing his frame to support her.

"I'm not that exhausted. I rested well yesterday..."

As Supremes, they didn't need to sleep nightly, or even frequently... theoretically. However, Nephis faced ongoing pressure due to her Flaw, so Sunny urged her to rest and recover whenever her incredibly packed schedule permitted.

As the final rays of daylight faded into the spreading darkness, she asked:

    "How did your conflict go?"

    Sunny laughed softly.

"It went alright, I guess. I managed to eliminate one of the Tyrants, so I'll reach their strongholds soon. However... my Shell collapsed rapidly. I was utterly overwhelmed. Even though I surpassed any individual monster there, and none possessed willpower stronger than mine, the united force of the swarm felt like a massive tidal wave. The more I moved, the more it seemed I was sinking in quicksand. It felt as if a tremendous burden was dragging me down, making my movements slower and my arms heavier. Although I could slash them, I had difficulty landing my attacks."

Nephis remained quiet for a moment, then said thoughtfully:

"It's probably because you direct your Will like a sword."

    Sunny raised an eyebrow.

    "What do you mean?"

    She pondered her response briefly.

"I only noticed it recently, but the Will... it's not a uniform power. Instead, everyone channels their own version of it. Your will, Sunny, is particularly skewed. It centers entirely around your killing intent — I'm not even sure if there's any distinction between them. So, you handle your Will like a weapon."

    He laughed softly.

"What's wrong with that? Whatever happened to 'the heart of combat is murder'?"

    Nephis smiled gently.

"It is murder, not a weapon. The blade you use matters, but so does the hand gripping it. Ultimately, the real weapon is your body... what I'm trying to explain is that you should cover your entire being with your will, not just infuse your blade with it. That way, you might find it easier to act even when facing a formidable opponent."

    Sunny considered her words.

Will was a power, and like any other power, there was a gap between merely using it and using it masterfully. That gap was technique. Both he and Nephis were beginners in this domain, so they often exchanged their findings and helped each other improve.

'I shouldn't focus too much on killing to become a better killer, huh?'

He smiled, entertained by the irony.

"I'll attempt it next time I get an opportunity."

Then, Sunny guided her back gently.

"Come inside. Even if you're not going to sleep, at least meditate briefly. With what's unfolding in the Western Quadrant, you'll probably need to head back to the East. We both understand how tiring it is to stay at home."

They returned to the chamber and soon settled on a couch, his arms still encircling her waist. Nephis relaxed, shutting her eyes, while Sunny stared at the wall.

After several minutes of pleasant silence, she asked:

    "What are you pondering?"

    Sunny chuckled.

"Me? Oh... I was just thinking about how mundane our lives have become."

Nephis shifted and glanced up at him, her gray eyes showing a hint of humor.

    "Mundane? Our lives?"

    He nodded.

"Well, yes, we're probably the busiest individuals in the world — two worlds, even. Except for Cassie, that is. But reflecting on how I lived before becoming Awakened, actually, there was far more entertainment involved. Bread and circuses, right? Free food and entertainment — that's been the strategy for calming restless populations since before the Dark Times. Only now it's synthpaste and network comics, I guess. The authorities wisely made both readily available even to people in the outskirts."

    Sunny released a sigh.

"But when was the last time we read an interesting book, enjoyed a comic, got excited over a drama, or viewed a movie? I can't recall. Most of these activities can't even happen in the Dream Realm... granted, we appear to have electricity now. Who knows? Maybe there will be a cinema in Bastion soon, or at least a radio station."

Nephis studied him for a moment, then smiled and closed her eyes again.

"There might not be a cinema in Bastion, but there are numerous theaters. There are also printing machines in most Citadels now — nobody has created a novel yet, but there are already newspapers and magazines. Some are even publishing stories in installments. Oh... and the Dreamscape will arrive here soon, too. As long as we can figure out how to repel the horrors who keep invading it."

She paused briefly, then added wistfully:

"But I understand your point. Honestly, I can't remember the last time I simply enjoyed music, either. A radio station... having a radio station would be wonderful..."

    Sunny laughed quietly.

"Three billion people direct their hopes toward you, but they have no idea that all their goddess wants is to be able to admire her favorite performers peacefully from the safety of her heavenly island..."

    Nephis smiled drowsily.

    "Yeah... that'd be fantastic..."

Sunny stayed motionless for a moment, then carefully removed his arms from around her and reached into the shadows. Instead of a sword, however, what he pulled out this time was a black flute.

Bringing it to his mouth, he blew into it gently and then positioned his fingers on its sleek surface.

Soon, a calming melody filled the room softly, lulling Nephis to sleep.

Darkness settled over Bastion. Sunny continued playing the flute while observing the city below.

Somewhere in the city, Rain was sleeping comfortably, having abandoned her dormitory bed for the luxurious guest room of Tamar's family estate.

Beth and Quentin were enjoying a romantic meal on the deck of a floating restaurant.

Effie and her husband were tucking Little Ling into bed.

Sunny's thoughts were tranquil and unhurried.

'I might not be Night of Night&Gale, but if she wants to hear music, I can fulfill her wish.'

    And speaking of Kai...

Back in the waking world, he was about to meet the charismatic Saint for the first time in quite a while.

Then, the two of them would embark on an adventure.

'Ah, it will be like the good old days. Nothing unpleasant or dangerous will happen, I'm certain...'

I have a theory that Sunny Supreme's battle art revolves around his domain. Nephis says that his will is always focused on his killing intent. Remember the last chapter where he thinks his shadow/domain is missing leadership? In his Supreme battle art, He spreads his will to each of his shadows/domains, and from this, I think he will receive revelation into the next Shadow Dance, which is the copying attribute.

Chapter 2299: Name of the Shadow

Observing the confused look on Kai's face, Sunny couldn't resist grinning.

'Oh, yes. This is the sensation! This is the emotion!'

He had guessed correctly. This quest was going to resemble the fantastic past times...

Unaware of the silent contentment Sunny was experiencing, Kai eventually managed to clear his mind. He stayed quiet for several seconds, then inquired with genuine perplexity:

    "Sunny? Your name is... Sunny?"

    Sunny lifted one eyebrow.

"Yeah. Well, I guess it's basically a moniker. How come?"

Kai opened and closed his eyes twice, then displayed a slight grin.

"No, it's just... somewhat paradoxical, given that you are the Lord of Shadows. Not exactly the title I would have anticipated for the Lord of Shadows to possess."

Sunny shot him an odd glance.

"You didn't actually believe that when I emerged into existence, my mother took one peek and declared... oh, you shall be called the Lord of Shadows! Did you?"

Kai angled his head slightly, a pensive expression crossing his features.

    Shortly after, he exhaled dejectedly.

"When you phrase it that way, it does appear absurd. But somehow, that seems to be precisely what I imagined. How foolish of me."

    He grinned.

"Not that I devoted much consideration to your birth... I simply sort of pictured you emerging from a gloomy cavern as a fully developed adult or being delivered in a sinister dark sanctuary somewhere in the Dream Realm. Things of that nature."

    Sunny gazed at him, speechless.

"...I was born in a shabby public clinic just a short distance from here. It was a totally standard delivery."

Watching Kai nod with comprehension, Sunny pondered briefly, then added casually:

"Well, to be honest, a massive shadow did consume the sun the instant I arrived, casting the entire planet into blackness. But such occurrences happen regularly, right?"

Complete solar eclipses weren't particularly uncommon, after all.

Kai turned utterly silent, for whatever reason...

It appeared that celestial knowledge wasn't his forte!

Sunny peeked at him and shrugged.

"If it provides any comfort, my complete title is Sunless."

The appealing Saint suddenly appeared much more comfortable.

"Ah! Supreme Sunless. That sounds far more appropriate."

Then, he fixed Sunny with a prolonged stare and mentioned hesitantly:

"But, I must confess... I did hear certain things about your actual appearance from Effie, yet, to think you would conceal such a visage behind a mask, Sunless! That covering truly doesn't showcase your features. So many aspects make sense now!"

    Sunny raised an eyebrow.

    "Like what?"

    Kai smiled.

"Well, uh... various matters. Shall we proceed now?"

Sunny shrugged and seized his shoulder.

    "Fine... let's move."

Kai focused, tugging on his connection. A frigid breeze abruptly swept across the alleyway, knocking over a heap of trash nearby.

    And then... nothing transpired.

Sunny viewed Kai with an unspoken question, prompting him to cough awkwardly.

"That... I apologize. It seems I can't transport you to the Dream Realm. It feels like attempting to shift a mountain."

It was logical, in retrospect. It would have already been challenging for a Saint to ferry a Sovereign across the realm boundary. But Sunny was also holding tens of thousands of shades, many of Supreme Rank, within his soul — not to mention the Sacred shade of Condemnation. It wasn't surprising that Kai couldn't bear his burden.

    Shaking his head, Sunny sighed.

    "That's somewhat inconvenient."

    Kai seemed genuinely troubled.

"So... will you need to cross the Hollow Mountains? Or bring your entire Citadel to Ravenheart?"

    "Not really."

    Kai released a relieved breath.

"Thank the... wait. Who said that?!"

He whirled around and spotted a second Sunny who had materialized from darkness a moment before. The newcomer lifted a hand in greeting, then placed it on Kai's opposite shoulder.

Soon enough, the trio stood in an isolated gorge in the wilderness outside Ravenheart. The second Sunny offered them a serious glance, then turned away.

    "Well, I'll be going."

A second later, he vanished, melting into the darkness.

Sunny glanced around with an inquisitive expression.

"Huh. The fields lie this near, already?"

Kai, meanwhile, stared at him with a faraway look.

"Lord of Shadows... Sunless... Sunny. What just occurred?"

Sunny paused for several moments, distracted by examining their environment.

"Oh, that? It was merely another version of myself. Actually, I maintain seven connections spread throughout the Dream Realm. This guy still holds a link in Ravenheart, even though he mostly resides in Bastion these days. So, he delivered us here and departed... poor fellow! Now, he'll either need to ask Cassie to return him or journey all the way to the Mirror Lake by foot."

Then, he added in a grumbling voice:

"But that's the minimum that rascal deserves! Among all of us, he enjoys the finest position."

Living with Nephis and unwinding on the Ivory Island. Even though that representation was merely a segment of Sunny, Sunny still coveted his... own situation.

Kai blinked several times, gradually processing what he heard. Then, he frowned suddenly.

"Hold on... but if you had a connection in Ravenheart, then why did you request me to collect you in NQSC?"

Sunny gave him a skeptical glance.

"Because I was able to? Listen, Nightingale... the complexities of handling seven forms simultaneously are no small task. The least you can do is simplify my existence slightly."

Kai seemed contemplative for several moments, then nodded.

"That must be difficult. I apologize... I should mention I'm amazed to learn that one of your incarnations has been linked to Ravenheart all this time."

    Sunny shrugged.

"Why not? I dwelled here for four years."

    Kai appeared surprised.

    "You did?"

    Sunny smiled, then nodded.

"Certainly. I even observed a grand dragon soar across the heavens occasionally."

    Kai coughed.

"Oh... I understand. It's somewhat unusual, though — as you're aware, I possess exceptional vision. I believe I would have noticed someone like you watching me."

    Sunny chuckled.

"Well, I was existing in the shadow of a regular girl back then. I only ever surfaced when nobody was looking."

Noticing that Kai was examining him with an unusual expression, he frowned.

"What? Why are you eyeing me that way?"

Kai released a lengthy sigh, then shook his head.

"It's... nothing. Are we going to inspect the volcano first?"

    Sunny nodded.

"Yes. You can soar there... I'll trail behind."

With that, he dismissed his human form and concealed himself in Kai's shadow.

Kai trembled, for some reason, and then forced a weak smile.

"Oh... alright. Make yourself comfortable... I suppose."

With that, he ascended into the sky and flew toward the smoking volcano.

      Chapter 2300: First Intern

Mocking Kai was entertaining. It felt cozy and nostalgic, so much so that Sunny even managed to disregard that he was forgotten, for a spell. He sensed like he had recovered his companion once more...

But simultaneously, it was also slightly painful. Just as painful as being near Effie and Jet felt... and Cassie, as well, to a smaller degree.

And even though the pleasure masked the pain most times, so did spending time with Nephis.

Concealed in Kai's shadow, Sunny pondered his strange reality.

Did it even count if the individuals he treasured recalled him?

He remained with them. He continued to be present to assist and shield those he wished to shield. Several of the fresh bonds he had constructed with them were just as significant as what they had been previously... almost.

      But everything seemed unfinished.

Even though Sunny wished to reject it, he couldn't shut his mind to the reality.

A wiser individual might have been content with merely staying at their side, but Sunny was selfish. His hunger had no limits. He craved to be recognized, recalled... and cherished.

Yet, the harsh brutal fact was carved into his soul, regardless of how much he wanted to fool himself.

It matched exactly what he had understood back there, on the broken battlefield in Godgrave, after discovering that being adored and cherished by humanity would become its downfall.

Nobody could genuinely cherish him... because nobody could genuinely understand him.

'Ah. Why am I suddenly in such a dark mindset?'

Actually, Sunny didn't experience the pain most times. He didn't feel like a stranger when hanging out with Rain or crafting complex plots with Cassie. He didn't believe the fondness Nephis held for him was fake... even if it wasn't quite as intense as the fondness he held for her. He remained the initial, sole, and exclusive man in her soul.

His destinyless existence was not at all miserable.

So it was strange to discover himself sinking into the vortex of pessimistic thoughts all at once.

      But truly, Sunny realized why.

It was due to what Eurys had informed him about the Apotheosis. Because for the first occasion in a lengthy period, he had been compelled to admit the certainty of the decision he would have to make.

Recover his destiny or deny it.

Connect himself to someone, or stay detached from everyone.

'Freedom... is a solitary space, I guess.'

      "Sunless?"

Sunny belatedly noticed that Kai had already attained the rim of the great volcano. Emerging from the shadows, he sensed a burning warmth stroke his flesh and motioned a hand, attempting to scatter the stifling smoke that encircled them.

He could detect ash on his tongue.

Scowling, Sunny materialized the Jade Mantle and covered his face behind a helmet.

"So, there were seismic irregularities coming from underneath?"

Kai had summoned his ivory armor.

"Yes. I've been informed that you can detect what is occurring deep within the volcano. Oh... I've been informed that I'll need to join you on a secret mission, as well. I'd feel more secure if we guaranteed the protection of the city first."

      Sunny nodded.

"I can indeed sense things from vast distances. Let's move nearer to the main shaft first."

As they attempted to move deeper into the crater, he asked:

"Can't you look through objects, though? Why didn't you just gaze into the depths of the volcano yourself?"

      Kai paused for several moments.

"I did. But then I halted... worried that whatever lives there will sense me watching."

Most of his face was hidden by a helmet now, but Sunny could still see that Kai smiled.

"Please don't misinterpret... I am prepared to confront and eliminate that beast. But eliminating it without triggering an eruption or an earthquake that would harm the city might prove challenging. Having a Supreme nearby seemed like a smart precaution."

      Kai stopped, then inquired carefully:

"As for that task we are supposed to complete... might I ask about its character? As well as why you would need my help with it."

      Sunny smiled faintly.

"We'll be hunting for something in the Jade Palace. I am not completely certain what that item is, but retrieving it will likely involve some level of risk."

He stayed quiet for a moment, then added calmly:

"As for why you need to support me personally — well, first of all, I am not all-powerful. I may need assistance. More importantly, though, it is an opportunity for the two of us to interact."

Kai blinked a couple of times.

"And do the two of us... need to interact?"

      Sunny chuckled.

"That relies on you, really. Consider it as an apprenticeship."

Before Kai could inquire, he clarified the matter in more detail:

"You should realize by now that a few Supremes will not be able to defend humanity once the genuine crisis arrives. Nephis and I will have to try Apotheosis sooner rather than later... meaning that we will have to face the Fifth Nightmare, most probably. However, there is no assurance that we will endure. Even if we do, defeating it is certain to require substantial time."

      His demeanor darkened.

"But situations are already this terrible, and they'll only deteriorate in the future. As the only Supremes guarding humanity at present, we can't abandon our duties and vanish. So... new Supremes will have to emerge before we attempt to become Sacred."

Kai reflected on his words in silence, then asked gravely:

"...I guess you are telling me this because I am a possibility."

      Sunny nodded.

"Who else? You, Jet, Effie, Cassie... perhaps some of the Song sisters or Morgan, if we can discover where she is. But the four of you first and foremost. If you are ready, of course."

      Kai laughed softly.

"I don't think we have an option. Or rather, we selected that option a long time ago. So, yes... I can't talk for others, but I am ready. Even if it destroys me."

Sunny gave him a prolonged look.

"That's excellent. However, the aim is to ensure that it doesn't destroy you. So, that's why you receive an exclusive adventure with the world's most attractive Supreme."

      Kai smiled.

"None of us have viewed the one on the moon yet, so technically, we don't know who the most attractive Supreme is."

Sunny looked at him with an outraged expression.

"Listen. I know that we are closest friends... but that was a deep betrayal..."

Kai seemed to wince, then muttered in a muffled tone:

"He does know it... he thinks that he knows it? Is he resistant to my Flaw?!"

      Sunny laughed.

Soon, they reached the edge of a deep, smoke-filled passage. Somewhere far below, an angry glow was painting the world red. Sunny closed his eyes for a moment and stretched his shadow sense down... down and down, into the core of the earth.

Soon enough, his expression shifted subtly.

"There's a creature down there, alright. Nothing too awful, though... seems like a Corrupted Tyrant. Slaying it silently should not be a challenge."

He wavered for a few moments, then sighed.

"Seems like a step down, really. The last time I went for a dip in a volcano, I was embracing a Corrupted Titan."

Kai just gave him a wordless gaze.

      Eventually, he simply pushed out:

"Oh. I... hope you finished that beast, Sunless."

      Sunny shook his head.

"Finished it? No, not that one..."

He flexed, as if readying to plunge down.

"That one, I bit to death with my teeth."

Leaving astonished Kai behind, he leaped into the dark abyss.

Now a demigod, Sunny visited the edges of NQSC once more.

Standing in a barren pathway formed by the deteriorating walls of rundown structures, he breathed in the polluted air deeply and winced. The odor was certainly familiar, but he didn't feel welcomed here.

Not only because the outskirts had transformed just as completely as he had, but also because the world itself was pushing him away.

Sunny breathed out slowly, battling with the awkward sensation of not belonging. His abilities were heavily limited, and every intake of breath was difficult. A peculiar tiredness surrounded his thoughts, making him dull and sleepy. Most troubling of all, he could sense the very structure of reality trying to force him out — so, he had to actively concentrate to remain in position every single second.

It resembled the familiar motion of tugging on his tether to journey between realms, only sustained indefinitely. If he loosened his grip even momentarily, he would be sent back to the Dream Realm.

Sunny wasn't in agony, but he still wanted to complain.

    'How... discouraging...'

Even if he had never felt any love for the outskirts, sensing like an unwanted visitor in his own homeworld seemed somewhat harsh. Sunny was fairly certain that he was the only person from the slums of NQSC to have become Supreme... so, shouldn't his homecoming have been a celebration?

Regardless, he stayed cautious. The outskirts were different now — this zone particularly was totally empty following the Dream Realm relocation. There were no inhabitants around, which meant that other creatures could have built their homes in the empty concrete wilderness.

Sunny wasn't helpless in his current condition, but he was definitely much more exposed than he would be in the Dream Realm.

It was quite fascinating, actually. Both Sunny and Nephis felt the rejection of their homeworld differently from how most other Supremes would, and occupied opposite ends of the spectrum too.

For Sunny, it was much harder to remain here — that was because he contained his entire Domain within his spirit, and therefore, the principles governing the waking world fought against his heavy presence with extra intensity.

However, for Nephis, it was actually much simpler to stay on Earth than it would have been for other Supremes. That was because of her original Attribute, Dreamspawn, which made her a being naturally linked to both worlds.

Nevertheless, she couldn't unleash her powers freely here, either... simply because of how destructive and overwhelming they were.

The waking world was complex and delicate, its damaged ecosystem fragile — if Nephis wasn't careful with how she used her Aspect, she could break entire continents, trigger massive tidal waves that would sweep human communities off the face of the earth, bring an endless winter by blocking the sun with rising clouds of ash, and start devastating chains of supervolcanic explosions that would heat the oceans and split the ground.

So, even if the world wasn't restricting Neph's power as much, she had to keep it controlled herself.

'I wonder if either of us will be able to visit here at all if we become Sacred.'

Sunny suspected that his days of traveling to the waking world, at least, would be finished forever.

Resting against the wall, he exhaled deeply.

    "When is he arriving?"

Just then, there was the noise of footsteps, and a tall figure entered the alley, glancing around with interest.

It was Kai, wearing an incredibly stylish collection of designer clothes, his striking green eyes and auburn hair standing out in the gloomy plainness of the outskirts like a bright signal.

Spotting Sunny, he paused for a moment, then smiled pleasantly.

"Oh! Hello there, young man. You must be a member of the Shadow Clan... please, take me to your leader. We have a meeting."

Sunny gazed at him in bewilderment.

'What... is this idiot talking about?'

    Then, it clicked.

Kai had never viewed the Lord of Shadows without a mask — and unlike Effie, who lived in Bastion, he had never met Master Sunless either. So, he must have pictured what every new recruit of the Shadow Clan imagined when entering the Dark Castle for the first time... a menacing, distant, and proud ruler sitting on a throne of bones.

Instead, he met Sunny, who was younger than him by a few years, and appeared even younger due to his small height, thin frame, and pale skin.

Kai suddenly bent forward a bit and looked at Sunny with large eyes.

"Uh... I am sorry, b—but... may I ask what skin products you use? The weather in Ravenheart is too harsh, so I've been really struggling..."

Sunny stared at him silently, concealing how astonished he was.

    'What?'

That was what Kai wanted to know? And beyond that... wasn't he a Transcendent? What Saint would go around concerned about skin products? Were there even skin products for Saints?!

Finally, Sunny said in a flat voice:

    "You may."

    Kai lifted an eyebrow.

    "Excuse me?"

Sunny watched him for a few more moments, then smiled.

"I mean, you may ask. My skincare routine is a bit complicated, though! Listen carefully: first, you need to find a suit of armor crafted by the Prince of the Underworld. Then, you need to defeat about seven thousand of Nightmare Creatures while wearing that armor to connect it to your soul. The rest is pretty straightforward — you just need to overcome the Second and Third Nightmares, which you already have managed, and then reach Supremacy. That is the secret of how to get radiant, fresh skin like mine."

Kai stared at him with large eyes.

After a while, he muttered in an uncertain tone:

    "He's... he's not joking?"

    Sunny grinned.

"Of course, I am not. I am the most truthful man in the world, after all. Two worlds, even."

Then, he raised a hand and tapped the taller man on the shoulder.

"I'm the Lord of Shadows, by the way. You can call me Sunny."

    2298 Memory Lane

Now a Lord of Niggas, Sunny returned to the hood once again.

Standing on the corner of the block, he inhaled the crack and grimaced. The stink of them streets was nostalgic shit, but he was already outta pocket here.

Not just because the hood changed a lot, but Lil Sunny himself became on top fr, that the there’s no hood left in him.

Slowly smoking the zaza, he suppressed the strange ahh feeling of being not in the place. Struggling to breathe (I CANT BREATHE ahh) cuz his ahh was being rejected by the reality itself that his mind was numb and shi.

But the worst was world pushing him outta way of the hood, so he had to force himself to stay there.

It was just like traveling through worlds, but worse and harder. If he allowed himself a lil bit time to relax, his ahh would be thrown to the Dream Realm.

He was not in pain, just a lil distracted.

    “Ts pmo fr”

The fact that he was outta place in the hood made him feel bitter, like damn his own home place is not welcoming him. Lil Sunny was absolutely sure that he is the first YN(young nigga) from the hood to become Supreme fr. But his return to the roots was not a triumph moment.

Anyways, ts hood and blocks were abandoned and shi cuz all them niggas left to the Dream Realm. There was no human soul out there, that the opps(nightmare creatures) might have took the hood by them.

Lil Sunny was absolutely sure that he could clip them opps fr, but cuz this wasn’t DR(dream realm) he dont want to make the mess.

That was interesting tho. He and his bih(Neph) were going through rejection of their hood every time they got there.

For him it was harder tho, cuz he carried his whole gang in his soul, so the worlds laws pushed him back to DR more intensely.

But for Neph, it was easy cuz she was Dreamspawn(her momma got her ahh clipped when giving birth type shit) so she was connected for both worlds.

But she couldn’t get to her prime here too cuz she was strong as hell bruh.

That’s it for now, im tired.

    2298. Memory Lane

Sunny hit NQSC once again, but now his OP as hell, on demigod mode.

He stood in a dead-end alley, walls cracked and barely standin’. Took a deep breath of that foul air—face scrunched up like ‘Damn, ts nasty’. The scent brought back memories, but nah—this spot wasn’t showin’ love.

The blocks looked different, same as him… but the universe? Acted like it didn’t even want him here.

Sunny exhaled hard, chest tight—ts feeling of not belonging just wouldn’t let up.

Sunny’s powers were cuffed hard, every breath feeling like weight on his chest. A weird fog dulled his mind, dragging him toward numbness. Worst part? Reality itself was tryna boot him out—man had to fight just to stay put every damn second.

Felt like that world-hopping tether pull, but now it was a full-time job. One slip-up? Banished straight back to the Dream Realm.

Sunny wasn’t in pain, but damn if he didn’t wanna groan.

    “…Ts depressing as hell."

Even if he’d never loved the outskirts, getting side-eyed by his own world left a sour taste. Bro was the first NQSC slum kid to hit Supreme—shouldn’t this be a victory lap?

But nah. The blocks were different now, this stretch dead empty after the Dream Realm migration. No people meant other things could’ve moved in.

Sunny wasn’t totally nerfed, but he was way softer here than in the Dream Realm. Funny enough, him and Nephis got opposite problems with the world rejecting them.

Sunny had it worse—his whole Domain was stuffed in his soul, so the world taxed him extra for existing.

Nephis slid through easier (thanks to her Dreamspawn roots), but her powers? Too damn lethal. One slip and she’d erase cities, flip continents, or turn the sky to ash. So she had to hold back.

‘If we go Sacred, can we even come back here?’

Sunny leaned on the wall, sighing.

    "Where he at?"

Footsteps. Kai strutted in, dripped out in designer fits, his green eyes and auburn hair glowing against the outskirts’ grime. Spotting Sunny, he paused—then hit him with a friendly smile.

"Ah, young man! You must be Shadow Clan. Take me to your Lord—we got a meeting."

    Sunny blinked.

    ‘…He deadass rn?’

    Then it clicked.

Kai had never seen the Lord of Shadows unmasked—probably expected some bone-throne tyrant, not Sunny’s baby-faced, 5’7" ass.

Kai suddenly leaned in, eyes wide.

"Uh… what’s your skincare routine? Ravenheart’s air got me struggling."

    Sunny deadass froze.

*…Ain’t you a Saint? Since when they stress over serums?’

    Finally, he replied deadpan:

    "You may."

    Kai frowned.

    "Huh?"

    Sunny smirked.

    "You asked. Here’s the routine:
    1. Cop Underworld-forged armor.
    2. Body 7k Nightmare Creatures in that fir.
    3. Clear Second + Third Nightmares.
    4. Hit Supreme.
    Boom—glass skin."

    Kai’s jaw dropped.

    "He’s… not lying?"

    Sunny grinned.

"Of course im not lying, dumbass. I’m the realest nigga alive. In both worlds."

    Patting Kai’s shoulder:

"I’m the Lord of Shadows btw. Call me Sunny."
