Chapter 2296: Teaching and Learning

Rain knew that she had a talent for the Sorcery of Names. In fact, she was more or less born to be a Shaper.

Humans all spoke the same language these days, but before the Dark Times, people of Earth had spoken all kinds of them. Pieces of these languages still remained, passed down among family members for generations, and academics had to learn the basics of a few if they wished to study the past. Of course, there were powerful machines capable of translating ancient texts for them, as well.

Then there was the Dream Realm and the Nightmare Spell, which translated the dead languages of the fallen civilizations for the Awakened. There was the language that the Nightmare Spell itself used, too. Rain had not understood why her brother insisted on teaching her these dead languages, but in hindsight, it was a very useful skill to have.

She had noticed that countless of the Dream Realm languages were similar to each other a long time ago, almost as if they shared a common source. The runic language of the Nightmare Spell was the closest to that source, but it was still merely an adaptation of it.

Having studied Shaping for a while now, Rain had come to believe that there was one true language out there, woven into the very fabric of existence, a language where every word was a True Name.

The language of the gods.

Unlike the human languages, which had been invented, this one was inherent to reality, both shaped by the world and shaping the world. Therefore, speaking the words of that language was no different from reshaping the world. That was what Shapers did.

By channeling True Names and assembling them into Verses, they could change the world in accordance with their will. However, not just anyone could become a Shaper.

The knowledge of True Names was esoteric and lost. Anyone could learn the True Names as long as they found one, though, and yet, very few could actually speak them. After all, these Names were never meant to be spoken by a human. They were meant to be spoken by the gods.

Most people simply did not have the talent to master the True Names, but rare individuals like Rain and Lady Nephis could, to a degree. Still, it wasn't easy.

The True Names were elusive. Even learning one did not mean that you could know it. The knowledge of a True Name was effervescent, straining to erase itself, as if something that was not supposed to be retained by a human mind — like an object placed into an ill-fitting vessel.

Speaking the True Names was difficult, too. Even if one had the talent, they had to practice relentlessly in order to realize it. Then, there was the act of invoking the True Names itself — channeling them required a deep well of endurance, soul power, and a firm will. Faltering during an invocation could not only ruin the sorcery, but also harm the sorcerer.

And finally, there was the process of assembling the Verses. That aspect of Shaping was not particularly hard or punishing, but demanded a lot of creativity from the Shaper. That was the part Rain enjoyed the most.

Lady Nephis was the only other Shaper she knew, and it was interesting to see how different their talents were. Overall, Rain judged herself to be a more talented Shaper, which did not mean that she was a more powerful one, though.

Due to her innate Attribute, [Poet], Rain could learn and speak True Names easily. Building Verses came naturally to her, as well. However, Lady Nephis was indomitable. Once she learned a True Name, that Name could never escape her — therefore, she carried an astonishingly broad library of them in her mind.

And while Rain had an easier time speaking the Names, her teacher could channel them much more effectively due to how uncompromising her will was.

Rain was not really sure, but she strongly suspected that neither of them was an ordinary Shaper. True Shapers of the ancient past could neither have invoked the Sorcery of Names as easily as Rain could nor have known as countless Names as Lady Nephis knew, most likely. Therefore, they would have probably been astonished by the speed with which both of them were absorbing Shaping.

Today's lesson was, honestly, a bit alarming. The True Names Lady Nephis spoke were so violent and calamitous that Rain wasn't sure she could channel them without destroying her own soul. Her teacher, of course, had no such problem — there did not exist a Name that Lady Nephis would not dare invoke, and no Name she would fail to tame.

After a while, Rain was covered in sweat and trembling from exhaustion. Her essence was on the verge of running out.

‘Let us finish here.’

Nodding, Rain collapsed on the floor. There was no furniture in the spacious chamber, but she was happy to feel the cool touch of the stone plates. After a while, she sat up and smiled.

“I am not sure I will ever need to speak such horrible Names, teacher. After all, I want to be a builder, not a natural disaster.”

Lady Nephis smiled faintly.

“Creation and destruction are two sides of the same coin, Rain. You can't neglect one if you want to master the other.”

Rain frowned a little, contemplating her words. Well, it made sense. If she wanted to build a bridge, she had to know all the ways in which the bridge could collapse — otherwise, she wouldn't be able to design it solidly enough to weather the burden of its own weight.

Still, she didn't want to focus on learning True Names that could be of use in a battle too much.

Rain lingered for a while, then summoned the Bag of Withholding and pulled out a stack of paper, each page filled with neat, pretty handwriting.

“Here is the new revision.”

She touched her hair in embarrassment. “I did my best to expand on the points you asked for. It is a bit hard to put into words, though. I am sorry.”

Lady Nephis took the papers from her, studied them briefly, and nodded.

“Thank you, Rain.”

Her expression grew a little wistful. After a few seconds of silence, Lady Nephis sighed.

“You must be curious about how things are going, right?”

Rain would lie if she said that she wasn't.

In truth, she had come to Bastion not only to learn. She had also come here to teach.

...

Lady Nephis shook her head slightly.

“None of them have learned to control their soul essence yet, let alone attempted to form a soul core. However, there is good news as well. Two volunteers are now showing initial signs of being able to sense their essence — a promising result, to say the least. I am sure we will have our first success eventually.”

She glanced into the window.

“Of course, by now, we have no choice but to admit that natural Awakening will never be as quick as the path offered by the Nightmare Spell. And the Awakened who do emerge that way in the future would most likely never be as fearsome as those forged and tempered by the Spell. Still, their power will supplement the power of humanity just as well, we just have to be mindful of the cost.”

The easiest way to help a mundane person Awaken naturally was to let them absorb soul shards of Awakened Nightmare Creatures. However, there were more and more carriers of the Nightmare Spell in the world these days, and all of them needed to saturate their cores in order to reach the pinnacle of their power. So, natural Awakening did promise to produce a tectonic shift in the fate of humanity — however, it was not a panacea to the problems that plagued it.

Lady Nephis glanced at the papers in her hand and smiled softly.

“Still — thank you, Rain. One day in the future, when the world becomes kind enough, children will not have to become fearsome warriors anymore. When that day comes, this effort of yours will save countless lives. No words can express my gratitude.”

Rain glanced away and blushed.

“T-That, that is alright! All I did was hunt a few Nightmare Creatures with big brother's help, fall into a canyon, and trek across a muddy plain. It was not a big deal.”

Lady Nephis chuckled quietly and patted Rain on the shoulder.

“I hope you didn't include this observation in your notes. We wouldn't want our volunteers to start jumping into random canyons, would we?”

    2297: A Night in Bastion

The sun was already sinking behind Bastion when Nephis arrived at her large room at the top of the Ivory Tower. The horizon glowed with a magnificent blaze of crimson and amber tones, while the sky above the Mirror Lake had transformed into a rich shade of indigo, countless stars sparkling on its velvet background like silver ornaments.

The bright circle of the full moon was climbing higher, too...

The darkness had grown dense and blurry, cloaking the world.

As Nephis stepped onto the balcony and gazed downward, Sunny emerged from her shadow and embraced her from behind, placing his chin on her shoulder.

    "Difficult day?"

Nephis breathed deeply, then released a lengthy exhale.

    "...Yeah."

Together they watched the moon's image drift across the water's surface in silence. Eventually, Sunny tightened his hold slightly.

"You can sleep without worry tonight. I'm watching over everything."

In reality, Nephis wasn't always present in Bastion. Much of her time was devoted to various combat zones — in the hazy waters of the Stormsea, in the frightening territories south of Godgrave, in the brutal chill of the frozen wasteland west of Ravenheart. If not there, she was guiding humanity into conflict in the waking world, even when the world itself hindered her abilities and resisted her existence.

She was striving hard to delay the breakdown of human society on Earth and ready the Dream Realm for the influx of countless refugees who would escape their failing world. Beyond everything else, she was constantly hunting for additional Citadels — those that remained undiscovered and unconquered, all to strengthen the Human Domain as much as possible and smooth the path for the human Sovereigns who would follow in her footsteps.

Sunny was battling too, though in a more secretive way.

But every month, when the full moon appeared over Bastion, both Nephis and Sunny needed to be present.

This was because the Cursed Demon they had released upon the actual Mirror Lake to halt Mordred still lurked there, concealed in reflections. It remained safely trapped on the opposite side of the Great Mirror most days, but during these few nights when the border between the two versions of Bastion grew weak, its sinister influence occasionally slipped through the moon's reflection.

That was why they needed to maintain vigilance.

Nephs rested her hands on his and reclined slightly in his sturdy embrace, allowing his frame to support her.

"I'm not that exhausted. I rested well yesterday..."

As Supremes, they didn't need to sleep nightly, or even frequently... theoretically. However, Nephis faced ongoing pressure due to her Flaw, so Sunny urged her to rest and recover whenever her incredibly packed schedule permitted.

As the final rays of daylight faded into the spreading darkness, she asked:

    "How did your conflict go?"

    Sunny laughed softly.

"It went alright, I guess. I managed to eliminate one of the Tyrants, so I'll reach their strongholds soon. However... my Shell collapsed rapidly. I was utterly overwhelmed. Even though I surpassed any individual monster there, and none possessed willpower stronger than mine, the united force of the swarm felt like a massive tidal wave. The more I moved, the more it seemed I was sinking in quicksand. It felt as if a tremendous burden was dragging me down, making my movements slower and my arms heavier. Although I could slash them, I had difficulty landing my attacks."

Nephis remained quiet for a moment, then said thoughtfully:

"It's probably because you direct your Will like a sword."

    Sunny raised an eyebrow.

    "What do you mean?"

    She pondered her response briefly.

"I only noticed it recently, but the Will... it's not a uniform power. Instead, everyone channels their own version of it. Your will, Sunny, is particularly skewed. It centers entirely around your killing intent — I'm not even sure if there's any distinction between them. So, you handle your Will like a weapon."

    He laughed softly.

"What's wrong with that? Whatever happened to 'the heart of combat is murder'?"

    Nephis smiled gently.

"It is murder, not a weapon. The blade you use matters, but so does the hand gripping it. Ultimately, the real weapon is your body... what I'm trying to explain is that you should cover your entire being with your will, not just infuse your blade with it. That way, you might find it easier to act even when facing a formidable opponent."

    Sunny considered her words.

Will was a power, and like any other power, there was a gap between merely using it and using it masterfully. That gap was technique. Both he and Nephis were beginners in this domain, so they often exchanged their findings and helped each other improve.

'I shouldn't focus too much on killing to become a better killer, huh?'

He smiled, entertained by the irony.

"I'll attempt it next time I get an opportunity."

Then, Sunny guided her back gently.

"Come inside. Even if you're not going to sleep, at least meditate briefly. With what's unfolding in the Western Quadrant, you'll probably need to head back to the East. We both understand how tiring it is to stay at home."

They returned to the chamber and soon settled on a couch, his arms still encircling her waist. Nephis relaxed, shutting her eyes, while Sunny stared at the wall.

After several minutes of pleasant silence, she asked:

    "What are you pondering?"

    Sunny chuckled.

"Me? Oh... I was just thinking about how mundane our lives have become."

Nephis shifted and glanced up at him, her gray eyes showing a hint of humor.

    "Mundane? Our lives?"

    He nodded.

"Well, yes, we're probably the busiest individuals in the world — two worlds, even. Except for Cassie, that is. But reflecting on how I lived before becoming Awakened, actually, there was far more entertainment involved. Bread and circuses, right? Free food and entertainment — that's been the strategy for calming restless populations since before the Dark Times. Only now it's synthpaste and network comics, I guess. The authorities wisely made both readily available even to people in the outskirts."

    Sunny released a sigh.

"But when was the last time we read an interesting book, enjoyed a comic, got excited over a drama, or viewed a movie? I can't recall. Most of these activities can't even happen in the Dream Realm... granted, we appear to have electricity now. Who knows? Maybe there will be a cinema in Bastion soon, or at least a radio station."

Nephis studied him for a moment, then smiled and closed her eyes again.

"There might not be a cinema in Bastion, but there are numerous theaters. There are also printing machines in most Citadels now — nobody has created a novel yet, but there are already newspapers and magazines. Some are even publishing stories in installments. Oh... and the Dreamscape will arrive here soon, too. As long as we can figure out how to repel the horrors who keep invading it."

She paused briefly, then added wistfully:

"But I understand your point. Honestly, I can't remember the last time I simply enjoyed music, either. A radio station... having a radio station would be wonderful..."

    Sunny laughed quietly.

"Three billion people direct their hopes toward you, but they have no idea that all their goddess wants is to be able to admire her favorite performers peacefully from the safety of her heavenly island..."

    Nephis smiled drowsily.

    "Yeah... that'd be fantastic..."

Sunny stayed motionless for a moment, then carefully removed his arms from around her and reached into the shadows. Instead of a sword, however, what he pulled out this time was a black flute.

Bringing it to his mouth, he blew into it gently and then positioned his fingers on its sleek surface.

Soon, a calming melody filled the room softly, lulling Nephis to sleep.

Darkness settled over Bastion. Sunny continued playing the flute while observing the city below.

Somewhere in the city, Rain was sleeping comfortably, having abandoned her dormitory bed for the luxurious guest room of Tamar's family estate.

Beth and Quentin were enjoying a romantic meal on the deck of a floating restaurant.

Effie and her husband were tucking Little Ling into bed.

Sunny's thoughts were tranquil and unhurried.

'I might not be Night of Night&Gale, but if she wants to hear music, I can fulfill her wish.'

    And speaking of Kai...

Back in the waking world, he was about to meet the charismatic Saint for the first time in quite a while.

Then, the two of them would embark on an adventure.

'Ah, it will be like the good old days. Nothing unpleasant or dangerous will happen, I'm certain...'

Nightmare monsters come from the Dream Realm. As far as I can tell, nightmare creatures are former humans and other inhabitants of other worlds that were absorbed by the Dream Realm. For example, in the first arc of the Forgotten Shore, we were told that a curse of all-consuming darkness descended there, and everyone began to turn into monsters; in the case of the Twilight Sea, Defilement came there, and in the modern world of Sunny, the Nightmare Spell. From this it is easy to conclude that when the Dream Realm begins to take over the world, events and catastrophes begin to occur there that carry with them the Corruption, that is, the power of the [Uncnown], and when the world is completely absorbed by the Dream Realm, it assimilates with it, and its former fallen inhabitants join the ranks of nightmare creatures. And when the first gates began to open on Earth, these same nightmare creatures poured there from the Dream Realm. The creatures that poured into Antarctica: in the memories of them it was said that they were somehow connected to the River Estuary, which means that when the gate opened, nightmare creatures from the Twilight Sea region entered there. So these creatures do not come from thin air, but come from the Dream Realm, and also sleepers killed during the nightmare turn into them, as if they were affected by Corrupted.
