Chapter 2292: Name Giver

Rain had once believed her Aspect would awaken during the war — perhaps at the most desperate moment, when she was on the brink of defeat, so that she could rise and turn the tide in the most dramatic fashion imaginable.

In hindsight, that had never truly been possible.

She did not fully understand how the world worked — no one truly did — but Rain sensed there was a subtle poetry to the mysterious crossroads of fate. People and their choices echoed one another... just as did the events they could not control. In that way, lives were like poems.

Not all of them, of course — or at least not all in equal measure. But the lives of those who held great power, or were extraordinary in some way, often were.

Rain did not possess great power. And while she might have been a little unusual, she would never go so far as to call herself exceptional. Yes, she had accomplished something remarkable once — she had Awakened without receiving the Nightmare Spell’s cruel gift — but most of that feat belonged to her brother, not her.

Still, it seemed her life carried its own quiet verse.

And while the poem of her life described battlefields and bloodshed, that was not its true theme.

Her Flaw, the Crown of Thorns, revealed as much.

What was the true theme, then?

The end of the Great War had left Rain in disarray. She had only just begun to understand that she was a Legacy — a princess-to-be, not unlike Tamar. Then, in an instant, her brother betrayed everyone and died.

So instead of a princess, she became the sister of a dead traitor... the most reviled villain in the world.

Thankfully, Rain was only an Awakened. She hadn’t seen Lady Nephis strike her brother down with her own eyes — her perception had not been sharp enough for that. She hadn’t even known what had happened until much later, when Cassie’s voice suddenly echoed in her mind, gently telling her not to worry.

Only then did she learn that her brother was alive — and that he was supposed to have died. In fact, she had not even been given the opportunity to mourn him properly.

More fortunately still, no one truly knew that Rain — or rather, Rani of the Seventh Royal Legion — had any connection to the enigmatic Lord of Shadows.

In the chaotic days that followed, the world changed at a dizzying pace. When the dust finally settled, Rain chose to remain behind in Godgrave, helping to build the road across the Collarbone Plain — the road intended to connect the former Sword and Song Domains. She made that choice for no other reason than a quiet love of creation.

That love carried more weight than one might assume.

She had thought long and hard about her future, and in the end, made her decision with solemn conviction.

Rain was weary of destruction. Tired of war. Tired of watching things crumble. Tired of doing the crumbling herself.

So, she returned to her place on a construction crew — though this time, she was not a mere laborer, but an elite among the Awakened.

And it was there, on a dusty worksite rather than a battlefield, that her Aspect finally revealed itself.

Fitting, really — especially for someone whose Flaw rendered years of painful training and hard-won battle experience almost meaningless.

Rain had spent many hours speculating about what her Aspect might be. In the end, it turned out to be something so strange, so unexpected, that no one could have predicted it.

It was entirely unique.

As an Awakened, Rain now had access to two Aspect Abilities. She also held two essence pools — one of soul essence, and one of spirit essence.

Her Dormant Ability allowed her to bestow Names upon things. Not ordinary names, and not quite True Names either — something in between. These Names were permanent, and imbued with modest power. The power was not overwhelming — she was still an Awakened, after all — but it was real, and it belonged solely to her.

Giving a Name required a one-time infusion of spirit essence. The more she invested, the stronger the Name’s influence on the object and the world around it.

The issue was, Rain still had no idea how to expand her spirit essence pool. And yet, by the time the road across Godgrave was complete, she had somehow accumulated quite a lot of it. The sky of her Soul Sea, once wide and clear, had become overcast, blanketed in thunderclouds and dripping with gentle, constant drizzle.

Then, she poured all that gathered essence into the newly completed road — and Named it the Road of Shadows.

When she did, the skies above her Soul Sea cleared. Sunlight shone once more on the glistening sea below... and something miraculous occurred.

Her brother had taken his Citadel away, but he had left behind a strange thing — the Shadow Realm Fragment, whatever that truly was.

Sunny had explained that he could control it a little, now that he was Supreme, but not well enough to use it where he was going.

The Fragment had manifested as a dome of impenetrable darkness at the heart of the Collarbone Plain — a sphere that stretched for dozens of kilometers. When Rain gave the road its Name, that darkness stirred and uncoiled, forming a thin veil that extended over most of the road’s length.

Just like that, the Road of Shadows was protected from the blinding radiance of the white abyss above Godgrave.

And Rain collapsed from essence exhaustion, causing quite a panic among the Shadow Clan operatives disguised as road workers nearby.

Still, it had all worked out. Sadly, Rain had not managed to accomplish anything quite so monumental since.

With the road complete, she traveled to Bastion to help with the construction of the Rivergate Dam and begin her Shaping studies under Lady Nephis — while continuing her engineering apprenticeship with Chief Bethany.

All the while, she kept quietly experimenting with Names and trying to understand her own soul more deeply.

She discovered a few things.

For one, using the runic language of the Nightmare Spell made Naming more efficient — it required less spirit essence to achieve the same effect.

She also discovered that Naming something which already possessed a True Name was nearly impossible.

Her second Aspect Ability — her Awakened Ability — allowed her to assign descriptive titles to things: Epithets. Unlike Names, Epithets were temporary. They only lasted as long as Rain had soul essence to fuel them.

For example, she could assign the Epithet “Indestructible” to a shield, greatly increasing its durability until her essence ran dry.

In fact, as an Awakened, she could apply two Epithets simultaneously. So, she could make it an Indestructible, Magnetic Shield — causing enemy weapons to cling to it after failing to break through.

More powerful Epithets cost more essence. “Indestructible” was much more potent — and much more draining — than something like “Durable.”

There were other factors too.

The more an Epithet conflicted with the nature of the target, the more essence it consumed. Making a shield tougher was easy. Making it brittle was harder. Assigning Epithets to living beings always demanded more.

Still, Rain could temporarily turn someone into an Immobile Person — especially if she knew their name, or better yet, their True Name. At least for a moment, assuming their Rank was not too high.

In fact, using Epithets on things that had True Names — or had already been Named — was cheaper and more effective.

It worked in reverse, too. Assigning a known True Name as an Epithet cost less essence and produced dramatically stronger results than using ordinary words.

For instance, calling an enemy’s sword “Burning” might heat it up until it became too hot to hold.

But assigning it the True Name of Burning would melt the blade completely.

In that way, Rain’s Epithets were often more powerful and versatile than even Shaping. Shaping required one to speak the Name aloud and channel it — once the sound faded, the magic began to unravel.

But Epithets stayed active as long as Rain’s essence held.

She could even keep minor ones going almost indefinitely if she chose carefully.

She could even assign them to herself.

Rain took another sip of her cocktail and smiled at Telle and Tamar.

They didn’t know it, but she wasn’t just Promise of a Distant Sky at the moment.

She was Sober, Well-Rested Promise of a Distant Sky.

Though, that second Epithet was eating through her essence at an alarming pace.

Not even her Aspect and Shaping could keep up with the might of Chief Bethany, apparently.

Well that is one blatantly broken ability. Seemingly able to tell the world how to behave and dictate fate. After all as an awakened she bossed around a remnant domain of a God.

If anyone is marked for divinity, it has to be Rani!

I guess that’s the reason her flaw is quite bad at least for an awakened because conversely her aspect is really powerful and has a lot of room for growth. Honestly it’s one of the most versatile aspect abilities we’ve seen in the series. Like seriously her awakened aspect ability was able to somehow the shadow gods domain granted that Sunny probably allowed it as well that’s still insane.

Rain's Aspect really does suit the Shadow Lineage's motif.

If Sunny's Aspect is related to Death which stirs souls beyond the grave, then Rain is someone who does the memorial by engraving Epitaphs on their graves, if that makes sense.

Chapter 2293 Finer things in life

The treats were attractive and tasty — granted, they weren't as tasty as what Rain was used to, having been spoiled by her brother's pancakes and waffles. His selection was somewhat limited, though...

Savoring a perfectly glazed eclair, Rain couldn't help but grin with pleasure.

'Should I show him about custard?'

Everything about this morning was splendid. Their elegant clothes, the stylish interior of the cafe, the sparkling view of the Mirror Lake, the extravagantly presented drinks, the fine and tasty treats...

'Ah, that is what I've been lacking!'

Her final teenage years had been spent in Ravenheart, pursuing Nightmare Creatures. The city had been in the stage of being constructed from scratch back then, as well, filled mostly by uprooted refugees. There had been a lot of tasks to be handled, but not a lot of elegant culture.

Eventually, Rain ended up on the battlefield, and after the war was done, she spent her time among active engineers and workers.

The finer aspects of life had mostly evaded her until now, so she was appreciating the unusual chance to feel like an actual girl for once. Plus, new cities in the Dream Realm had spots like this one now, as well as theaters, operas, dancing halls, and much more. People wanted to enjoy rest and fun after working hard, so local entertainment culture was growing quickly.

Rain, Telle, and Tamar talked casually as new snacks and pretty drinks arrived.

"It feels odd, really. Now that there is no Crushing, the Chained Isles are totally different. It is much safer there, and we can actually fly as high as we want. Of course, the Nightmare Creatures feel just as free, so even those of them who used to remain still are moving around. It's a real mess, but once we clean the islands near the Sanctuary, we will be ready to welcome settlers..."

"They are working on making more flying ships. There are several thousands of Fire Keepers now, but only one Chain Breaker... sadly, while building a flying ship is not that difficult, building one that is not going to break into pieces at the first hint of danger is a big issue. So, not much success on that front, for now. Our Spellsmiths are trying to make flying Echoes as a temporary solution, instead, but they are not creating them fast enough. Only the Masters get one."

"...Oh, I don't know. I am quite busy these days. Right, have you heard, girls? Saint Thane is apparently creating a new version of Dreamscape, this one designed specifically for the Dream Realm. It is supposed to serve as a communication area between different cities, as well as a training tool to prepare ordinary citizens for the First Nightmare."

Telle couldn't help but release a sigh.

"Really? Oh! That would be fantastic. I love the Chained Isles, but being stuck all the way up north is so dull sometimes."

She sipped her drink, watching the Mirror Lake with a faraway expression on her incredibly beautiful face, then turned to Rain and Tamar.
    "Speaking of Nightmares..."

The cheerful mood turned a little gloomy all of a sudden.

The blonde girl paused for a few moments.

"I am thinking of facing the Second Nightmare in no more than a year. What about you two?"

Although she did not ask directly, her underlying question was obvious. Telle was asking if they wanted to face the Second Nightmare with her.

For an Awakened, there was no question more personal than that. There was also no clearer sign of how much the person trusted you.

Rain felt both moved and sad.

She glanced at Tamar briefly, then smiled gently.

"Well... I can't, for various reasons. But Tamar was actually thinking the same."

Rain would have loved to face the Second Nightmare with Telle and Tamar... however, she was not a carrier of the Nightmare Spell, and therefore, she couldn't.

She was following a different path from them.

    Tamar nodded calmly.

"Actually, I already have the base of the cohort gathered, including a healer... as well as a few people in mind I want to recruit. If you are not going to gather a team out of members of your clan, then we will be happy to have you. After all, it is hard to discover warriors of the same quality as Telle of White Feather."

A corner of her mouth lifted slightly.

Telle stayed still for a moment, then cleared her throat to hide a shy smile.

"Oh... well, you aren't wrong. I am indeed quite powerful."

She quickly picked up her drink, took a long sip, and then added in her usual calm tone:

"There is no one else in White Feather who can go into a Nightmare with me, at the moment. So... I am very interested in that cohort of yours, Tamar. Are they Fire Keepers, too?"

    Tamar shook her head.

"No. But we... practice together, I guess. And our instructor is a real devil."

Rain pretended to be busy with her glass.

Tamar was talking about the Shadow Clan, of course. It was no secret that her brother and his graceful Shadow, Saint, were readying his subordinates for the dangers of the Second Nightmare. Tamar, Telle, Ray, and Fleur — two fearsome warriors, an elusive scout, and a healer. That was a good base for a cohort of challengers. With a few more talented people involved, they would stand a very good chance of becoming Masters.

'When will I become a master?'

Rain did not know, since things on that front were unclear and advancing slowly.

She finished her drink, called a waiter, and smiled at him, making the young man blush.

    "Can we get the bill?"

Then, Rain looked at her friends and grinned.

"You do know what comes next, right?"

Tamar and Telle looked at each other with confusion.

    "What?"

    Rain sighed dramatically.

    'Ah, these sheltered Legacies...'

      Chapter 2294 An Eloquent Cavaliere

Despite the fact that Rain's current situation was far more unusual than those of her friends, unlike them, she had actually experienced a more typical childhood. Beyond that, she had more practical knowledge — Telle and Tamar might have understood how to handle high society better, but for this stylish outing, Rain was their leader.

...And her leader was the Bastion Gazette.

Following the agenda she had been carefully studying since the last time Telle visited Bastion, they enjoyed a stroll of the Lakefront Promenade, went on a modest buying trip on the Fashion Street, and finished in a park with her purchases safely kept in the Bag of Withholding.

Rain's spirits were high, and the temperature was pleasant. The three of them sat on a bench and relaxed in the sunshine, enjoying the wind.

      Telle sighed.

"Why don't we go to a beach and swim a little?"

Tamar looked at her, then shook her head.

"We can't go to a public beach. More exactly, we can't let anyone see Rain in a swimsuit — otherwise, we'll have to fight off a wild crowd of fans. It'll be worse than Godgrave."

      Rain chuckled.

Tamar might have been kidding, but she was also somewhat right. If the three of them wore swimwear and showed up on a public beach, it would probably cause quite a commotion — after all, most people there were mundane.

Telle examined Rain up and down and sighed.

      "...True."

      Rain smiled.

"You two aren't so bad yourself. In fact, a couple of guys have been watching us for the last ten minutes."

      Tamar lifted an eyebrow.

      "Huh? Where?"

She seemed a little uncomfortable — after all, she was supposed to be the bodyguard, and yet Rain noticed that someone had been observing them first.

There were indeed two young men not too far away, apparently enjoying a picnic. They were not very obvious about it, but Rain had not missed the intense looks the young men were sending in their direction from time to time.

Telle glanced around, then frowned. Her face darkened a little.

"Oh. I think I know one of them. Let's... go somewhere else. Please?"

Neither Rain nor Tamar had any objections, so they left their bench and moved toward the park exit.

The two young men just happened to catch up with them a minute later, though.

      Rain observed them with interest.

They were a little older than the three girls and seemed sincere enough. They were quite attractive, too... too attractive to be mundane or merely Awakened, even. Their bodies were slim and fit, and their light summer clothes did nothing to hide the clear lines of their shaped muscles.

She would not have minded giving them a little time, but Telle's negative reaction had already created a bad first impression.

      'Can this be...'

One of the young men smiled and bowed slightly.

"Greetings, fair ladies. I am deeply sorry if my friend and I are disturbing your walk, but we could not help but admire your amazing beauty from afar. Truly, it can only be compared to the tempting wonder of the Mirror Lake shining under the bright sun... fresh and lively, full of promise so captivating that no sweet words can describe..."

Rain blinked and stared at him with wide eyes.

      'W—what is he saying?'

The other young man froze, then paled and quietly raised a hand to cover his face.

"...and thus, captivated and enchanted by the three stunning fairies that must have come from heaven to brighten this sad world with their youthful charm, we cannot help but hope that you would join us for a humble picnic. Please, I ask of you... will you grant the valuable gift of your sweet company upon us? My heart is like a bird caught in a cage, beating wildly in expectation!"

The strange guy finally stopped talking, looked at their shocked expressions, and then added quickly:

"Oh! Forgive my poor manners... I was so charmed by your amazing beauty that I forgot to introduce myself. I am Master Tristan, and this is my friend, Master Mercy."

'Ah... now, how do I refuse them politely?'

Rain blinked a couple of times, Telle moved slightly, and Tamar just stared at the two young men with a blank expression.

A few moments later, she said flatly:

"Tristan? You're Tristan of Aegis Rose?"

      The young man smiled brightly.

"So you've heard of me. Well, I can't say I'm surprised. The tales of my combat skill have spread far and wide, after all!"

      Tamar nodded.

"Oh, I think I killed a cousin of yours at Godheart."

      The young man froze.

      "P—pardon?"

Tamar examined him for a few moments, then shrugged.

"Well, who knows? I might have. I am Lady Tamar of Sorrow, formerly a centurion of the Seventh Royal Legion. And these are my friends..."

      Tristan's face changed.

"Seventh Royal Legion? Seven Royal Legion?!"

The other young man opened his eyes wide and reached for his friend.

      "Tristan, wait!"

      But Tristan did not wait.

"The army of that dishonorable, evil wench, Seishan of Song? Bah! I take it back, then. I have to! My honor will not allow me to stay quiet! You are no fairy, my lady. You must be an evil temptress, instead!"

But before he could say anything else...

There was a loud noise, and Master Tristan was suddenly facing the other way, the outline of a delicate palm clearly marked on his cheek.

Rain shook her hand in the air with a hurt expression.

      "Ouch!"

Her hand hurt, but she was pleased. This was a full outing experience now!

Granted, it would have been better if the person she slapped was not a Master. Masters really had hard jaws.

Looking at the shocked Ascended, Rain smiled.

"That was not very chivalrous of you, don't you think, Master Tristan? After all, you approached us first... how can you call my friend a temptress?"

      She shook her head.

"I am sorry, but we will have to decline your invitation for a picnic. Now, if you'll excuse us..."

Giving the other Master a slight bow, she grabbed Telle and Tamar and pulled them away.

Rain waited until they were far enough away before bursting into laughter.

...Tristan and Mercy, meanwhile, were left behind to their own matters.

Tristan rubbed his cheek, a puzzled expression on his face.

Did this slap... feel strangely familiar?

Eventually, he sighed and looked at Mercy with disapproval.

"...The worst thing they can say is no, huh?"

    2296 Teaching and Growth

Rain understood she possessed a gift for the Sorcery of Names. In truth, she was practically destined to become a Shaper.

People across the world spoke one common language now, but prior to the Dark Times, inhabitants of Earth had used countless different ones. Fragments of these tongues still existed, handed down through families across generations, and scholars had to grasp the fundamentals of several if they wanted to examine history. Obviously, there were sophisticated devices able to interpret ancient writings for them too.

Then came the Dream Realm and the Nightmare Spell, which rendered the extinct languages of collapsed societies for the Awakened. There existed the dialect that the Nightmare Spell itself employed, as well.

Rain hadn't grasped why her brother forced her to study these extinct tongues, but looking back, it proved an incredibly beneficial ability to have.

She had spotted that many Dream Realm languages resembled each other significantly... almost like they shared a mutual origin. The runic speech of the Nightmare Spell came nearest to that source, yet it remained merely a version of it.

Having examined Shaping for some time, Rain had developed the belief that one authentic language existed out there, woven into the very essence of being... a language where each word was a True Name.

    The language of the gods.

Unlike human tongues, which were created, this one was fundamental to existence, both influenced by reality and influencing reality. Thus, uttering the words of that language was identical to restructuring the world.

    That was what Shapers accomplished.

By harnessing True Names and combining them into Verses, they could alter the universe according to their desires.

...Yet, not everyone could become a Shaper.

The wisdom of True Names was mysterious and vanished. Anyone might learn True Names if they discovered one, but... very few could actually pronounce them.

After all, these Names were never intended for human speech. They were meant for divine utterance.

Most individuals simply lacked the aptitude to handle True Names, but special people like Rain and Lady Nephis could, to an extent. Nevertheless, it wasn't simple.

The True Names were... fleeting. Even memorizing one didn't guarantee you could retain it. The awareness of a True Name was temporary, fighting to delete itself, as if something not meant to stay within a human mind — like an item placed in an unsuitable container.

Voicing the True Names was challenging, too. Even with natural talent, one needed to train constantly to develop it.

Then, there was the task of summoning the True Names itself — directing them demanded deep reserves of stamina, spiritual energy, and steady determination. Hesitating during a summoning might not only disrupt the magic, but also injure the user.

And finally, there was the job of constructing the Verses. That aspect of Shaping wasn't particularly difficult or punishing, but required significant imagination from the Shaper. That was the section Rain enjoyed best.

Lady Nephis was the only other Shaper she encountered, and it was fascinating to observe how distinct their abilities were. Overall, Rain considered herself a more gifted Shaper... which didn't suggest she was a stronger one, however.

Because of her innate Attribute, [Poet], Rain could acquire and utter True Names with ease. Creating Verses felt instinctive to her, as well. However, Lady Nephis was... unyielding. Once she absorbed a True Name, that Name could never vanish from her — consequently, she maintained an impressively vast collection of them in her thoughts.

And while Rain found it easier to pronounce the Names, her instructor could direct them much more powerfully due to how absolute her will was.

Rain wasn't completely certain, but she strongly believed that neither of them represented a typical Shaper. Genuine Shapers from ancient times could likely neither have called upon the Sorcery of Names as readily as Rain could nor have possessed as many Names as Lady Nephis owned, probably.

Therefore, they would have presumably been amazed by the pace at which both women were mastering Shaping.

Today's instruction was, honestly, somewhat frightening. The True Names Lady Nephis uttered were so fierce and destructive that Rain wasn't confident she could channel them without destroying her own soul. Her teacher, naturally, experienced no such difficulty — there didn't exist a Name that Lady Nephis would not attempt to summon, and no Name she would fail to control.

After a while, Rain was drenched in sweat and shaking from fatigue. Her essence was almost gone.

    "Let's stop here."

Agreeing, Rain dropped to the floor. No furniture filled the large room, but she welcomed the cool touch of the stone surface.

Eventually, she sat up and grinned.

"...I'm not convinced I'll ever need to use such dangerous Names, teacher. Really, I aim to create, not cause destruction."

    Lady Nephis smiled slightly.

"Creation and destruction represent opposite sides of the same coin, Rain. You can't ignore one if you desire to excel at the other."

Rain pondered this statement with a small frown.

Well... it seemed logical. If she planned to construct a bridge, she needed to understand all the ways the bridge might fail — otherwise, she couldn't design it strongly enough to support its own weight.

Still, she preferred not to concentrate too heavily on learning True Names that might serve in combat.

Rain stayed quiet briefly, then retrieved the Bag of Withholding and pulled out a stack of paper, each sheet covered with tidy, elegant handwriting.

    "Here's the updated version."

    She touched her hair nervously.

"I... I tried my hardest to elaborate on the topics you requested. It's somewhat difficult to express clearly, though. I apologize."

Lady Nephis accepted the papers, browsed them quickly, and nodded.

    "Thank you, Rain."

    Her face became somewhat nostalgic.

After several moments of quiet, Lady Nephis sighed.

"You must wonder how things are progressing, right?"

Rain would be dishonest if she claimed otherwise.

Actually, she had arrived at Bastion not just to study.

She had also arrived to instruct.

The information about how to Awaken naturally was too valuable to keep private. Rain was the only individual — for now — who had managed to not only Awaken, but also unlock her Aspect and Flaw without assistance from the Nightmare Spell. If she could show others how to achieve this feat, far fewer would face the First Nightmare... and far fewer would perish.

    Like her parents' firstborn had.

Lady Nephis and Cassie wanted more Awakened in the world, too, so they promised Rain complete support. Given the inherent risks of changing the very foundation of existence, her identity remained hidden for now, and the Immortal Flame clan acted as her representative in this effort.

They moved carefully. At this point, only a limited group of volunteers had been selected to try natural Awakening in secret — individuals of various ages, backgrounds, and careers, all connected by their mutual wish to help humanity grow stronger.

    But advances came slowly.

It had required Rain four years to Awaken, but she was a pioneer. Those following her path should enjoy a quicker journey, yet none of the volunteers showed great improvement.

Lady Nephis moved her head slightly.

"None have figured out how to manage their soul essence yet, let alone tried to form a soul core. However, we have positive news too. Two volunteers now display initial signs of being able to detect their essence — a hopeful development, at minimum. I'm confident we'll have our first success eventually."

    She gazed through the window.

"Obviously, by now, we must admit that natural Awakening will never be as quick as the method offered by the Nightmare Spell. And the Awakened who emerge this way in future might never be as powerful as those forged by the Spell. Nevertheless, their abilities will boost humanity's strength just as effectively... we just need to be aware of the price."

The simplest method to help ordinary people Awaken naturally involved letting them absorb soul fragments from Awakened Nightmare Creatures. However, more carriers of the Nightmare Spell appeared in the world daily, and all needed to fill their cores to reach their maximum strength.

So, natural Awakening did promise to bring major change to humanity's destiny — but it wasn't a solution to every problem facing it.

Lady Nephis examined the papers in her grip and smiled gently.

"Still — thank you, Rain. Someday in the future, when the world becomes gentler, children won't need to turn into fierce warriors anymore. When that day arrives, your effort will preserve countless lives. No expression can capture my gratitude."

Rain glanced away with a blush.

"T—that... that's fine! All I did was battle some Nightmare Creatures with big brother's assistance, tumble into a canyon, and walk across a muddy plain. It wasn't much..."

Lady Nephis laughed softly and touched Rain's shoulder.

"I hope you didn't include that observation in your notes. We wouldn't want our volunteers to begin jumping into random canyons, would we?"

    2296 Teaching and Learning

Rain grasped that she owned a knack for the Sorcery of Names. Truly, she was nearly crafted to serve as a Shaper.

Nowadays, folks all chatted using one tongue, yet prior to the Dark Times, Earth's dwellers had voiced a bunch of different ones. Bits of those tongues lingered on, delivered through kin across many years, and researchers needed to pick up the essentials of some to dive into history. Sure enough, there existed clever gadgets fit to decode old writings for them too.

Next came the Dream Realm alongside the Nightmare Spell, which rendered the lost dialects of tumbled cultures for the Awakened. Plus, the Nightmare Spell wielded its very own lingo.

Rain hadn’t figured out why her sibling kept pushing to coach her in those faded dialects, but looking back, it proved a mighty handy trick to hold.

She’d spotted that lots of Dream Realm dialects seemed close to one another way back when… pretty much like they stemmed from a joint root. The runic speech of the Nightmare Spell sat nearest to that root, though it was only a tweak of it.

By tapping True Names and linking them into Verses, they could shift reality to match their wishes.

But not every soul could step up as a Shaper.

The grasp of True Names was mysterious and gone. Anyone might uncover the True Names if they stumbled on one, sure… yet hardly any could really say them.
After all, these Names weren’t built to be said by folks. They were made for deities to utter.

Lastly, there was the chore of piecing together the Verses. That slice of Shaping wasn’t too rough or harsh, but it asked for heaps of spark from the Shaper. That bit was what Rain liked best.

Lady Nephis stood as the lone other Shaper she’d met, and it was neat to watch how their skills split apart. All in all, Rain saw herself as a sharper Shaper… though that didn’t say she was the mightier one.
Thanks to her born gift, [Poet], Rain could grab and voice True Names with no sweat. Crafting Verses flowed easy for her too. Still, Lady Nephis was… unbeatable. Once she nabbed a True Name, it couldn’t slip away — so she held a jaw-dropping wide set of them in her thoughts.

While Rain found it simpler to say the Names, her guide could steer them way better, thanks to her rock-hard will.

Rain wasn’t dead sure, but she had a strong hunch neither was a regular Shaper. True Shapers from way back likely couldn’t have tapped the Sorcery of Names as smooth as Rain did, nor held as many Names as Lady Nephis did, odds are.

So, they’d have likely gaped at how quick both picked up Shaping.

Today’s session was, frankly, a tad spooky. The True Names Lady Nephis let out were so fierce and crushing that Rain doubted she could steer them without smashing her own spirit. Her guide, naturally, had no such snag — no Name existed that Lady Nephis wouldn’t risk calling, nor one she’d flop to rein in.
After a bit, Rain was soaked in sweat and quaking from weariness. Her vigor was about to dry up. ‘Let’s wrap up here.’ Nodding, she dropped to the ground.
No chairs sat in the big room, but she was pleased to catch the chill feel of the stone slabs. After a spell, she propped up and grinned.
‘…I’m not certain I’ll ever need to voice such awful Names, guide. I mean, I aim to craft, not crash like a storm.’ Lady Nephis grinned light.

Rain hung around a bit, then called up the Bag of Withholding and tugged out a heap of sheets, each one packed with clean, nice script. ‘Here’s the fresh take.’

She brushed her hair, feeling shy. ‘I… I gave my all to flesh out the bits you wanted. It’s kinda tricky to spell out, though. Sorry.’

Lady Nephis grabbed the sheets from her, scanned them fast, and tipped her head. ‘Thanks, Rain.’ Her look turned a shade dreamy.

After a quiet beat, Lady Nephis breathed out. ‘You’re likely keen on how it’s rolling, yeah?’ Rain’d be fibbing if she said no.

Truth is, she’d rolled into Bastion not just to pick up stuff. She’d come to pass it on too.

The know-how to Awaken was, of course, too rich to hoard. Rain was the only one — so far — who’d pulled off Awakening and cracking her Aspect and Flaw without the Nightmare Spell’s nudge. If she could coach others to hit that mark, way less would face the First Nightmare… and way less would kick the bucket.

Like her folks’ first kid had.

Lady Nephis and Cassie hoped to spot more Awakened around too, so they swore to back Rain all the way. Given the built-in risk of tweaking the world’s base, her name stayed hush for now, and the Immortal Flame clan stood in for her in this gig.

They moved slow and careful. Right now, just a picked few helpers got tapped to try natural Awakening on the down-low — folks from all sorts of years, roots, and jobs, tied by a shared itch to boost humankind’s grit. But steps were dragging.

It took Rain four years to Awaken, but she blazed the trail. Those trailing her were meant to zip through faster, yet none of the helpers showed big wins. Lady Nephis nudged her head a bit.

‘None’ve got a grip on their soul essence yet, never mind tried to shape a soul core. Still, there’s upbeat news too. Two helpers are flashing early hints they can feel their essence — a bright sign, no less. I’m betting we’ll nab our first win sometime.’

She peered out the window. ‘Sure, by now, we gotta own that natural Awakening won’t ever zip like the road the Nightmare Spell lays out. And Awakened popping up that way down the line likely won’t match the grit of those carved and toughened by the Spell. Even so, their juice’ll boost humankind’s juice just fine… we just gotta watch the toll.’

The handiest way to nudge a regular person to Awaken natural was letting them soak up soul shards from Awakened Nightmare Creatures. Yet, more and more holders of the Nightmare Spell roamed the world lately, and they all had to juice up their cores to hit their peak kick.

So, natural Awakening did hint at kicking up a huge flip in humankind’s path — still, it wasn’t a fix-all for the snags that bugged it. Lady Nephis eyed the sheets in her grip and smiled gentle.

‘Even so — thanks, Rain. One day ahead, when the world turns sweet enough, little ones won’t need to morph into tough battlers anymore. When that hits, this push of yours will spare tons of lives. No talk can show my thanks.’

Rain swung her gaze off and pinked up. ‘Th—that… that’s okay! I just chased a few Nightmare Creatures with big bro’s help, tripped into a canyon, and slogged over a wet patch. It wasn’t a huge thing…’

Lady Nephis giggled soft and tapped Rain’s shoulder. ‘I hope you skipped this bit in your scribbles. We don’t want our helpers diving into stray canyons, huh?’

Chapter — 2293: The Delights of Life

After the cocktails, it's baking time. The pastries were beautiful and delicious, though not as delicious as the ones Rain was used to, spoiled by her brother's pancakes and waffles. However, his repertoire was somewhat limited… while enjoying the beautifully glazed eclair, Rain couldn't help but smile with delight.

      «Maybe I should introduce him to custard?»

Everything was wonderful this morning. Their beautiful clothes, the refined interior of the cafe, the sparkling view of the Mirrored Lake, the lavishly served cocktails, the delicate and delicious pastries…

      «Ah, that's what I missed!»

Her last teenage years were spent in Ravenheart, where she hunted Nightmarish Creatures. At that time, the city was in the process of being built from scratch and was populated mainly by displaced refugees. There was a lot of work, but not much sophisticated culture.

Later, Rain went to the front, and after the end of the war, she spent time among busy engineers and workers.

Until now, the delights of life had mostly eluded her, so she was glad for the rare opportunity to feel like a real girl. In addition, the young cities of the Kingdom of Dreams now had similar establishments, as well as theaters, operas, dance halls, and more. People wanted to relax and have fun after hard work, so the local leisure culture developed rapidly.

Rain, Telle and Tamar chatted lazily while new delicacies and beautiful cocktails were brought to them.

«It seems strange, really. Now that there is no Crushing, the Shackled Islands are completely different. It's much safer there, and we can fly as highas we want. Of course, the Nightmarish Creatures feel just as free, so even those of them who used to stay in place are now moving around. It's a real mess, but once we clear the islands in the vicinity of the Sanctuary, we'll be ready to welcome the settlers…»

«They are working on the creation of new flying ships. They have several thousand Fire Keepers now, but only one Chain Breaker… Unfortunately, although it's not that difficult to build a flying ship, it's a big challenge to build one that doesn't shatter into pieces at the first sign of danger. So there is not much progress on this front. Instead, our Spellcasters try to create flying Echoes as a temporary measure, but they don't create them fast enough. Only the Masters get them.»

«…Oh, I do not know. I'm very busy these days. That's right, girls, have you heard? Saint Tang seems to be working on a new version of the Dreamscape, created specifically for the Realm of Dreams. It is supposed to serve as a space for communication between different cities, as well as a tool for preparing ordinary people for their First Nightmare.»

      Telle couldn't help but sigh.

«Really? Oh! That would be great. I love the Shackled Islands, but sometimes it's so boring to be stuck in the north.»

She sipped her cocktail, looking at the Mirrored Lake with a detached expression on her exquisite face, and then turned to Rain and Tamar.

      «Speaking of Nightmares…»

The festive mood suddenly became a little gloomy. The blonde hesitated for a few moments.

«I'm thinking of challenging the Second Nightmare in a year at the latest. What about you two?»

Although she didn't ask directly, her hidden question was clear. Thelle asked if they would like to challenge the Second Nightmare with her.

For the Awakened One, there was no question more intimate than this one. There was also no clearer indication of how much this person trusted you. Rain felt both touched and dejected.

She glanced briefly at Tamar, and then smiled softly.

«Well… I can't, for various reasons. But Tamar was actually thinking the same thing.»

Rain would love to challenge the Second Nightmare with Thelle and Tamar… but she wasn't the bearer of a Nightmare Spell, which meant she couldn't.

She walked a different path than they did.

      Tamar nodded calmly.

«Actually, I've already gathered the bulk of the cohort, including the healer… I also have a few people that I want to recruit. If you are not going to assemble a team of your clan's servants, then you will be welcome. After all, it's hard to find a warrior of the same caliber as Telle of the White Feather.»

The corner of her mouth curved up faintly.

Telle was silent for a while, and then cleared her throat to hide a shy smile.

      «Oh… Well, you're not wrong. I'm really quite impressive.»

She hurriedly picked up her cocktail, took a long sip, and then added in her usual calm tone,

«At the moment, there is no one in White Feather who could go into a Nightmare with me. So… I'm very interested in this cohort of yours, Tamar. Are they Fire Keepers too?»

      Tamar shook her head.

«No. But we are… We train together, I suppose. And our instructor is a real devil.»

Rain pretended to be busy with her glass.

Tamar, of course, was talking about the Shadowclan. It was no secret that her brother and his graceful Shadow, the Saint, were preparing their subordinates for the dangers of the Second Nightmare. Tamar, Telle, Ray and Fleur are two formidable warriors, an elusive scout and a healer. A good core for a cohort of applicants. If a few more talented people joined them, they would have every chance of becoming Masters.

      «When will I become a Master?»

Rain didn't know, as things on this front were uncertain and progress was slow. She finished her cocktail, called the waiter over and smiled at him, making the young man blush.

      «Can we get the check?»

Then Rain looked at her friends and grinned.

      «You know what's going to happen next, don't you?»

Tamar and Telle exchanged uncertain glances.

      «What?»

      Rain sighed languidly.

      «Ah, those greenhouse Legacies…»

      «…Shopping!»

Chapter — 2294: The Eloquent Cavalier

Even though Rain's current circumstances were much more unusual than those of her friends, unlike them, she had a very ordinary childhood. Besides, she had more worldly experience — Telle and Tamar might have known better how to behave in high society, but on this elegant walk, Rain was their guide.

…And her guide was the Bastion newspaper. Following the plan she had been carefully developing since Telle's last visit to Bastion, they strolled along the lake embankment, made some modest purchases on fashion Street, and eventually ended up in the park, safely packing their purchases in an invisible bag.

Rain was in a great mood, and the weather was warm. The three of them were sitting on a bench and basking in the sun, enjoying the light breeze.

      Thelle sighed.

«Why don't we go to the beach and swim for a bit?»

Tamar looked at her and shook her head.

«We can't go to a public beach. More specifically, we can't let anyone see Rain in a swimsuit, otherwise we'll have to fight off a crowd of angry fans. It would be worse than being in the grave of a God.»

      Rain laughed.

Tamar may have been joking, but at the same time, she was right about something. If the three of them had donned swimsuits and appeared on a public beach, it would probably have caused quite a commotion — after all, most of the people there hadn't woken up yet.

Thelle looked Rain up and down and sighed.

      «…Indeed.»

      Rain chuckled.

«You two aren't that bad either. In fact, a couple of guys have been staring at us for about ten minutes now.»

      Tamar raised an eyebrow.

She looked a little embarrassed — after all, she was supposed to be a bodyguard, and yet Rain was the first to notice that someone was watching them. There were indeed two young men nearby who seemed to be enjoying a picnic. They weren't very noticeable, but Rain didn't lose sight of the intense glances that the young men cast in their direction from time to time.

Thelle looked around, and then frowned. Her expression clouded a little.

      «Oh. I think I know one of them. Let's… Let's go somewhere else. Please?»

Neither Rain nor Tamar objected, so they got up from the bench and headed out of the park.

However, two young men caught up with them a minute later.

      Rain looked at them curiously.

They were a little older than the three girls and looked quite sincere. They were quite beautiful… They are even too beautiful to be ordinary people or simple Awakened Ones. Their figures were slender and athletic, and their light summer clothes did not hide the clear outlines of their muscles.

She wouldn't mind spending some time with them, but Telle's negative reaction had already made a bad impression.

      «Could it be…»

One of the young men smiled and bowed slightly.

«Greetings, lovely ladies. I am very sorry that my friend and I interrupted your walk, but we couldn't help but admire your sublime beauty from afar. Truly, it can only be compared to the alluring wonder of a Mirrored Lake sparkling under the rays of the sun… fresh and lively, full of such charming promises that no sweet words can describe them…»

Rain blinked and stared at him with wide eyes.

      «Wh-what is he saying?»

The second youth froze, then turned pale and awkwardly raised his hand to cover his face.

«…And so, enchanted by the three beautiful fairies who must have descended from heaven to illuminate this dreary world with their youthful charm, we can't help but hope that you will join in come to us on abmodest picnic. Please, I'm begging you… Are you giving us a precious gift in the form of your wonderfulncompany? My heart is like a bird trapped in a cage, beating wildly in anticipation!»

The strange guy finally finished speaking, looked at their surprised faces, and hurriedly added,

«Oh! Forgive me for being rude… I was so charmed bynyour stunning beauty that I forgot to introducenmyself. I'm Master Tristan, and this is my friend, Master Mercy.»

      «Ah…»

Rain blinked a couple of times, Telle moved away slightly, and Tamar just stared at the two young men with an expressionless expression.

After a few seconds, she said dejectedly:

«Tristan? Are you Tristan from the Aegis of the Rose?»

      The young man beamed.

«So you've heard of me. Well, I can't say that I'm surprised. After all, the stories of my military prowess have spread everywhere!»

«Oh, I think I killed your cousin in the battle for the heart of God.»

Tamar studied him for a few moments, and then shrugged her shoulders.

«Well, who knows? I could have. I am Lady Tamar of Sorrow, a former centurion of the Seventh Royal Legion. And these are my friends…»

      Tristan's expression changed.

«The Seventh Royal Legion? The seventh Royal Legion?!»

The second youth widened his eyes and reached out to his friend.

      «Tristan, wait!»

      But Tristan didn't wait.

«The army of that dishonest, devilish girl, Sayshan from the Song? Ha! Then I take it back. I have to! My honor will not allow me to remain silent! You are not a fairy, my lady. You must be an evil seductress!»

But he didn't have time to say anything else…

There was a loud sound, and Master Tristan's face suddenly turned to the side, the silhouette of an elegant palm was clearly imprinted on his cheek. Rain shook her hand in the air with a pained expression.

Her arm hurt, but she was happy. Now it was a full-fledged walking experience! Of course, it would be better if the person she slapped wasn't a Master. The Masters really had strong jaws.

Looking at the stunned Ascended One, Rain smiled.

«That wasn't very noble of you, was it, Master Tristan? After all, you were the one who contacted us first… How can you call my friend a seductress?»

      She shook her head.

«I'm sorry, but we have to decline your picnic invitation. Now, if you'll excuse us…»

bowing slightly to another Master, she grabbed Telle and Tamar and dragged them away.

Rain waited until they were far enough away before she burst out laughing.

…Meanwhile, Tristan and Mercy were left behind, left to their own devices.

Tristan rubbed his cheek, a confused expression appeared on his face.

That slap in the face… Did she look strangely familiar to him?

In the end, he sighed and looked at Mercy reproachfully.

«…The worst thing they can say is no, isn't it?»

Mercy took a deep breath, shook his head, and left in dejected silence.

      Chapter — 2295: Secret Lessons.

Sadly, everything pleasant had to come to a finish.

After experiencing a joyful and thrilling morning out with Tamar and Telle, Rain said goodbye to them. Tamar was off duty today, so she went back to the house her family was renting in Bastion. Telle, meanwhile, had a meeting with the leader of a merchant group that wanted to start a trade caravan to the Chained Isles.

Rain herself switched out of her pretty dress into the Puppeteer's Shroud. The dress, the fancy shoes, and the earrings went into the Bag of Withholding — a thermos full of hot coffee came out instead, and she let out a deep breath of contentment after taking a sip, her back resting against a wall in a hidden alley.

A few moments later, her brother emerged from the shadows and gave her a curious look.

      Rain raised an eyebrow.

      «What?»

He paused for a bit, then shook his head.

      «No, it's nothing. Just… good job!»

That only made her more puzzled.

      «With what?»

      He smiled.

«Slapping that fool, of course! Ah, you really made your big brother proud… I guess it's true what they say, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree…»

Rain blinked a couple of times. Did her brother know that strange guy, Tristan? Well, looking back, that was only to be expected. The circle of Legacies was quite small, after all, and the Aegis Rose clan was well-known. Telle seemed to be familiar with at least one of the two young Masters, too.

It was a bit worrying, though, to hear that she was starting to act like Sunny.

      That would be a problem!

Only Sunny could succeed at being Sunny.

Clearing her throat, she offered him her hand and smiled.

«In any case, I am ready to go.»

He pulled her into the shadows, and a moment later, they were on the Ivory Island.

The emerald grass swayed gently in the warm wind, and the sun was shining on the sparkling surface of a small lake. The beautiful white pagoda stood up into the sky behind them, surrounded by the white bones of a dragon that wrapped around it.

No matter how many times Rain visited the peaceful island, she could not help but feel a sense of wonder. She could not help feeling out of place here, either, as if she was a human who had accidentally found her way into paradise.

      Rain looked around carefully.

      «We're outside?»

Her activity on the Ivory Island was of a secretive kind. So, her brother would usually bring her directly into the tower in order to avoid watching eyes.

      He nodded.

«We had guests earlier, but they have already left. So, you can relax.»

They walked toward the Tower of Hope at a relaxed pace. Before too long, Rain looked up and asked suddenly:

«By the way, I've always been curious… what is that dead dragon doing here?»

At first, she had simply thought that everything on the Ivory Island was mysterious and magical. But as she grew more familiar with the place, the sun-bleached bones of the great beast started to look unusual.

Her brother glanced at the ancient remains and smiled.

«Oh, him? His name was Sevras, the Ivory Lord. He was the ruler of a place called the Ivory City, a descendant of Sun God, and one of the seven immortal Saints who protected the Demon of Hope. Well, before he went insane and died.»

Rain looked at her brother in surprise.

«Really? Wait, how do you know all of this?»

      He paused for a moment.

«Ah, well. Some people you know met him in their Second Nightmare. How do you think Nightingale got that fancy title of his, the Dragonslayer?»

      Rain's eyes widened a little.

«Saint Kai? He killed this giant dragon?»

      Her brother laughed.
