Chapter 455: Meggie – I taught her well (1/3) |
Saturday morning. Although it was a weekend, in Japan, and in Hoshigawa Academy, there were still classes. It wasn't a full day, and the students would be dismissed at noon for the day, just before lunch. Even so, it was still a day of school.
Which meant that Meggie didn't have to wait until the weekend was over to tie up this loose end.
Holding her school bag with one hand over her right shoulder, she subconsciously glanced back at Emma and Perry walking behind her.
Emma looked a bit nervous, her emerald eyes glancing around the campus as they walked to class. "A-Are you sure it will be okay, Meggie?"
Meggie gave a reassuring smile. "It'll be fine, Emma. After all, you remember what I taught you, right?"
Emma slowly nodded. "I did. But-"
"You did, so it'll be fine." Meggie stopped and turned around to pat Emma's shoulder. "If you don't believe in yourself, then believe in me who believes in you."
'...That's what Dad always said, right?'
Even if you didn't believe in yourself, if someone believed in you, then you just had to believe that someone until you believed in yourself.
Perry nodded, his eyes sharp. "Right. It'll be fine, Emma. And if it isn't..."
Meggie rolled her eyes and said, "Look at big bro here, acting all tough." She let out a teasing smile and said, "Did you get a confidence boost after meeting Aunt Jenny?"
Perry's face turned a bright red and he stammered, "O-O-Of course not! I was just... I'm not...!"
Meggie laughed.
Emma giggled along with Meggie and then said, "You don't have to do anything, Perry." She finished giggling and glanced at Meggie. Then she took a deep breath and nodded. "This is... this is my problem. So I'll resolve it myself. B-But..." She fidgeted and said, "D-Do we really have to do... 'that,' Meggie?"
Meggie gave a firm nod. "Yeah. If you want those idiots to stop, then you have to show that you aren't a weakling. I can and will always protect you if I'm around... but the only one who can protect you forever is yourself, Emma." She paused and then put a hand on her chin. "...Well, I guess that's not completely true. I mean, if you become like a decoration or a doll for someone then you're always safe too if that person's super strong..."
There had been plenty of people like that in the Three Realms. And plenty of people who wanted to be like that with Dad.
Mom shut them down real quick though. She wasn't and had never wanted anyone mooching off of Dad like that.
...Though considering how glued to the hip Mom had been with Dad, it might have been for different reasons...
Anyway.
Meggie shook her head and looked at Emma. "But anyway, you don't want to be like that, right, Emma?"
Emma shook her head. "No. I don't want to just rely on someone else all the time, Meggie. And... I want to help people too." She clenched her fist and said, "I want... I want to be strong. Like you, Meggie. So I can make sure no one gets hurt like me anymore."
Meggie smiled. "That's great. Then we just do like we planned last night."
Emma hesitated. "B-But... what if they tell the adults? And the teachers? Or if they try something else...?"
Meggie waved her hand and said, "Don't worry. Dad said that as long as it's between the kids, everything will be fine. But..." Meggie's eyes flickered with malicious glee. "If they want to have a pissing contest, we'll just go all the way."
Emma gasped. "P-P-Pi... W-What are you saying, Meggie?!"
Perry coughed and said, "R-Right! Girls shouldn't be saying things like... like that!"
Meggie snorted. "Oh please, it's just a figure of speech... And if that bothers you, you'll have a heart attack if you meet Asako nee-chan. She's gotten better, but when she's annoyed, she's got such a potty mouth." She paused and said, "...Oh, actually I should introduce you two to my big sisters sometime. And my future sister-in-law too... Although..." She glanced at Perry and let out a mischievous grin. "Considering how big bro here acted around Aunt Jenny, maybe not..."
Perry stammered. "H-Hey! That's... I-I can't help that Miss Jenny was so pretty!"
"Sure, sure... There was a lot you couldn't help around my aunt."
Emma gasped.
Perry turned a bright red.
Meggie laughed and said, "No wonder Dad likes teasing people." She poked both Perry and Emma on the cheek and said, "People react so cute sometimes."
