My name is Chen Huai’an, and I have cancer. I’m dying. Lately, I’ve become obsessed with a virtual girlfriend game.

I top up my account to buy her cultivation techniques and magical artifacts. Even though I’ve emptied my wallet, I laugh like a fool.

I always thought it was just a game—until one day, my virtual girlfriend sent me a pill.

The next moment, the pill appeared in my hand… Am I… not going to die?!

***

My name is Li Qingran.

My cultivation has been crippled, my spiritual roots dug out, and I’ve been expelled from my sect. I cower in a dilapidated hut, waiting to die. I thought my life was over—until I met a mysterious senior who never shows himself.

This senior heals my wounds and helps me cultivate. I grow stronger and stronger, eventually becoming the most powerful sword cultivator in the Cangyun Realm. I’ve heard that the spiritual energy in Cangyun is depleting, the Dao is dim, and an immortal from another world plans to merge their soon-to-revive realm with ours.

An age of chaos and opportunity is upon us. Even immortals may face death in this struggle. I scour the world for traces of this senior.

I want to protect him—and become his Dao companion!!! Collapse

Caught up to 92 Chapters. 3.5-4.5/5

Honestly, after wading through so much garbage that other novels are, this novel feels like a masterpiece even though it's just good, not amazing or anything.

This is a comedic, happy go lucky story. The author seems to have a big plot in mind so nothing feels like it was simply thrown together last minute. Story alternates between game world and real world.

There are a few novels that do this, but i've never seen this concept used in this way. It is a breath of fresh air, with so much shit to go through. You won't be wowed, but you won't have a bad time either.

The interactions between the leads is cute, but i do find it a bit lacking. It reduces in frequency after the initial stages as the plot starts moving along and we have to deal with a lot of the other things.

My original (short) review, "mid quality, possibly AI mtl/edited AI mtl(the terms keep changing) and a mid story with a dense protagonist… subpar overall but decent junk if you don’t mind that. although not for me mc’s denseness levels are still quite acceptable for some people." got a comment saying I didn't read the novel so I wanna just expand onnat.

Protagonist. The story features Chen Huai’an, a college freshman diagnosed with terminal cancer, who ends up downloading(kind of) a suspicious “virtual girlfriend” app. The guy already had shitty luck; his parents died in a wildfire, the girl he was dating left him (such a new plotline), and he has basically no money. All of a f#cking sudden a pop-up game installs itself on his phone, which he is 100% convinced is by hackers... Even when his in-game girlfriend "sends him a gift" and he receives it irl he's still convinced some random hackers are doing all this.

The dude's a broke, almost-dead cancer patient who was holding onto his money yet starts dumping thousand of yuan for a random self-installing phone app. There is some rationale (he’s lost hope, wants to indulge, etc.), but it still feels forced. He's supposed to be extremely logical, having gotten into a first-tier university but then just invests everything in this game. Even if the text explains “he has nothing to lose” it still comes off as contrived. His whole approach to problem solving is to just keep paying. The mind boggling speed at which he invests in his “girlfriend” and decides to “save Li Qingran no matter what” (while ignoring his real life problems)... If you still need me to say more things just pull the trigger bro.

Story & World Building. Qingyun Sect, Wanqing Mountain, “Inner disciples,” “Outer sect,” “fire poison,” “thunderfire talismans,” “celestial-grade pills,” etc. All jammed in at a crazy pace with little attempt to detail or differentiate them from the usual cookie-cutter xianxia tropes. The “betrayed by all senior brothers who now dote on the new junior sister” is a CLASSIC dogblood or “white lotus” trope: Li Qingran used to be loved, is expelled unfairly, leaving her with “destroyed spiritual roots.” So original.

The whole plot from which Li Qingran got expelled is bullshit. The entire sect turning on her for a minor tournament fight is never convincingly explained. The story just says: “She accidentally hurt the new junior sister, so the entire peak tries to kill her.” Feels ham-fisted.

The same can be said for when a second prominent female character is (properly) introduced, an antagonist to our FMC, where it got revealed she wanted Li Qingran dead for vague “I want her water spiritual root or her Taiyin Dao Body” reasons. Again, really original there.

The text is nearly 40–50% dedicated to listing out gacha items, recharges, “buy next formation,” etc. I get that that's the point and it was somewhat funny to a point, but after some time it'll just be repetitive junk. There is a sense that the entire cultivation realm is actually purely a shop interface for the MC, which is very much reminiscent of low-quality system novels. The story is more so about the comedic (not really) “pay to save Li Qingran from [random stuff]” than actual cultivation. Again, I get that the cultivation realm is kind of marketed as a shitty gacha game, but still.

Tone and pacing issues. There are a lot of erratic jumps in tones. In just a few paragraphs, the story can jump from the supposedly funny “I will buy one more recharge!” to tragedy (Li Qingran is near death, drenched in blood, or the MC’s real-world broken bone from climbing "Mount Tais"). Then it goes back to comedic in-game shopping. Poorly done slapstick.

To talk more about the whole Mt. Tai thing: The MC “flips off fate” and tries streaming a mountain climb out of nowhere, all so he could raise money for his digital girlfriend (remember, he has bone cancer by the way). The narration and the surrounding world treat it... flippantly (chat members mocking, then quickly sending huge donations, then random “mirage” event). The author tried justifying him having (quite a lot of) viewers by saying he had spent money on advertising, but again, forced plotline. At the start of the live stream, there's a bunch of viewers claiming him to be a fake, wanting to “expose” him for lying about cancer. The mc says that his papers from the hospital were free for all to view, yet some randoms who were "nearby" (an hour away by car, not really "nearby" by my standards) for whatever reason decide that isn't enough and want to expose this "fake" for themselves. Of course, they were wrong, and then they go with him to climb Mount Tai, etcetc.

To talk a bit more about Li Qingran, well, she’s effectively a tragic, pitiable figure designed for the mc (and readers) to coddle. Her basically sole goal so far is occasionally deciding “I must repay Senior.” She's a standard damsel xianxia heroine, devoting a vow to repay kindness, yet her character has no real dimension.

These were mostly actually story-related, so the last thing I want to shortly talk about is the translation.

AI MTL. The main reason I say I'm confident in this being AI MTL is that the terms keep changing. One time Mount Tai is addresses as Mount Tai, the next it's Taishan (which is a direct pinyin transliteration of 泰山), and further than that it's also sometimes addressed as Mount Tais which is a clear f#cking mistake. U can't use "Tai" as plural lmao. Also, the entire time, the female lead was calling the mc "Senior", yet one chapter suddenly switched to "Predecessor"(which is either a mistranslation for 前辈, or, even if it is another term, still a misinterpretation. "Predecessor" doesn't make sense in the context.) The grammar is subpar too which points towards a low-mid level AI TL.

Also this entire concept of girl within a gacha game isn't new. It's already been done with "The Dungeon Monsters Keep Offering Sacrifices." The plot isn't a lot better but the translation quality was miles ahead of this last I remember.

Might edit later, wanted to respond to the statement that it might seem illogical to charge monry for pay to win. While it might be bit exaggerated, it is by far not too far from what is currently happening in all of those pay to win mobile games, some people put in hundreds of thousands if not millions for some virtual item. So in fact it is not far fetched if you are familiar with topic.

      Edited quicker then though.
      World building
It seems you have issues of comprehension there is no second rival to fmc introduced. It is the same junior sister she supposedly injured and it was properly explained that the same junior sister is using some tricks to make everybody overreact and get fmc killed. So either you dont read, or fail to understand what you read, so my point still stands

      Arguements against AI
It certainly is not a cheap AI translation as the key thing happening with AI translations does not happen here. I mean the usual mixup of character genders. This directly points out that this is not some random AI translation.

Another thing about predecessor, this also points to your lack of reading comprehension. It was stated in the story by the female mc themselves when the switch happened that she felt that addressing mc as senior is not proper enough and switched to addressing mc as predecessor.

Next time best of luck and do try to actually understand what you read and not just skim the content

First of all. Gacha games where “whales” pay even up to millions of dollars do exist. But this guy’s dead broke, has cancer, doesn’t have money to treat the cancer (and btw it has been mentioned cancer is actually treatable in this world), is supposedly very logical (got into a first-rate university), has been prudent with his money all his life, yet now he suddenly becomes a spendthrift for a random gacha game that installs itself on his phone…

I never said that a second fmc was introduced. I see you can’t read properly (makes sense why you’re defending this novel so badly instead of just agreeing it’s junk, which like isn’t even bad; everyone’s read junk at one point in their life, just that this is quite low quality junk) since I even mentioned “prominent female character”, and “an antagonist to our FMC”… The longer you argue the more I question why I’m even arguing with you.

You say there’s no gender problems which is common in AI TL’s. But that’s WRONG. Old mtl(like google mtl) had those problems because in chinese, 他 can be translated as both he and she. AI, on the other hand, can use context clues to determine the gender of the person, even if the translation isn’t high-level.

Thurdly, I do indeed not remember that but even if it did happen, LIKE I MENTIONED IN THE REVIEW WHEN I SAID or, even if it is another term, still a misinterpretation. "Predecessor" doesn't make sense in the context. To explain for you since you seem to not be able to understand, this means that even if the term isn’t the one for senior, it’s still a misinterpretation at the least.

So don’t try to say I have no reading comprehension when you can’t even understand properly laid out facts.

Ok, so you can't read. Thanks for confirming it to us all who have actually read the novel in its entirety and not just dismiss chinese novels as trash through cognitive dissonance as usual as it is with many western readers having some slight negative boner because the writer happens to be Chinese.

          Yeah he's a spendthrifter
But hey dude did you know what happened to him? Maybe you should revisit some chapters eh?

Then, still smiling, he said something that wasn’t funny at all—

"You know, Uncle Luo… my parents died in a forest fire when I was a kid. The government was supposed to give me 200,000 yuan in compensation, but by the time I actually got it—due to all sorts of ‘complications’—it had shrunk to 20,000 yuan."

"I struggled to survive. I thought that if I just got into college and graduated, I’d finally make it."

"Then I was diagnosed with terminal cancer."

"The hospital didn’t care. They just asked, ‘Do you have insurance? Do you have money?’ If not, they told me to go find some first. No money, no treatment."

"My girlfriend cheated on me. When she found out I had cancer, she dumped me without hesitation."

Luo hesitated, his voice strained. "So… you think this world is unfair?"

"No," Chen Huai’an shook his head.

"I think this world is very fair."

"If you can’t afford treatment, you wait for death—that makes sense."

"If compensation money never reaches the victims, that’s just normal bureaucracy."

"If a girlfriend leaves her boyfriend because he’s terminally ill, well… who could blame her?"

          "Then why—"

          Chen Huai’an exhaled softly.

          "It’s just that…"

"When I was at my lowest, this world never embraced me."

"So if you’re asking me to turn around and embrace the world now—"

          "I’d find that absolutely disgusting."

          Luo met his gaze.

The light in Chen Huai’an’s eyes flickered—on and off, like a candle in the wind.

And yet, despite standing under the warm glow of the sun, Luo couldn’t shake the feeling that this young man…

          Was already completely dead inside.

"Uncle Luo, what you’re protecting—is your world."

          "But my world—"

          "Isn’t worth protecting."

This is from chapter 95. Problem solved. Guy is depressed. And he just so happens to think digital waifus offer more comfort for him - which btw he does mention something like this multiple times. Thinking the emotions he sees is more real than what his ex had shown.
But it doesn't stop there - you disingenuously ignored the fact that he didn't spend that much at the beginning but did actually spike it up overtime. We literally GET to see him initially hesitant, then getting more and more accustomed to it. This is quite normal, people might spend something little at first, and be fine with it and then eventually that boundary rises higher and higher to what they're willing to pay. A person may not pay for something worth about 100$ from the start. But later on they might be willing. This isn't anything new. But you're too illiterate to know this so I gotta remind you.

Also predecessor in Chinese and English doesn't strictly carry the same nuance though. But "Senior" is definitely more fitting contextually even if the Chinese word used CAN mean predecessor

Actually, this concept of a gacha girl is even older; in The Novel Extra, it had already been applied. There, the MC donates money to a talented hero in another world and invests in them.

I totally agree that the concept is older. Just that I think this novel is VERY similar to the one I've mentioned, the only big differences being that one novel is Korean and has the usual "mana" and "f through s rank" shit, while this one has the "spiritual energy" and "cultivation ranks" shit. Also I've on. Oh also the other novel might have already had mana in the “real world” as well though I’m not sure

what do you mean its not worth the wait? do you only binge read? 2-3 chapters are uploaded daily that's 60 chapters MONTHLY if they're consistent with it.
but that's assuming the translations don't catch up to the raws before then. (I'm pretty sure there's about 200+ atm)
either way that's still a lot of chapters for you to read, ur just cant wait I guess?
