My name is Chen Huai’an, and I have cancer. I’m dying. Lately, I’ve become obsessed with a virtual girlfriend game.

I top up my account to buy her cultivation techniques and magical artifacts. Even though I’ve emptied my wallet, I laugh like a fool.

I always thought it was just a game—until one day, my virtual girlfriend sent me a pill.

The next moment, the pill appeared in my hand… Am I… not going to die?!

***

My name is Li Qingran.

My cultivation has been crippled, my spiritual roots dug out, and I’ve been expelled from my sect. I cower in a dilapidated hut, waiting to die. I thought my life was over—until I met a mysterious senior who never shows himself.

This senior heals my wounds and helps me cultivate. I grow stronger and stronger, eventually becoming the most powerful sword cultivator in the Cangyun Realm. I’ve heard that the spiritual energy in Cangyun is depleting, the Dao is dim, and an immortal from another world plans to merge their soon-to-revive realm with ours.

An age of chaos and opportunity is upon us. Even immortals may face death in this struggle. I scour the world for traces of this senior.

I want to protect him—and become his Dao companion!!! Collapse

    - A fairly fun read, probably 6.5/10, so above average.
    - Personally, I would say it leans more to the slice-of-life/comedy side of things than the tags would suggest. If you're looking for something lighthearted and not particularly deep worldbuilding/characters, than i'd suggest it.
    - The plot is also reminiscent of another called, 'The evil god beyond the smartphone' so if you like this you might as well check that one out

Take the so-called Smiling Buddha, for example. He possessed great strength but indulged in reckless slaughter to justify his path, discarding morality long ago.

The cultural revolution that lead to the communist regime had a lot of anti religious sentiments. Buddhism being the primary religion along with confusian and something else. And their ancient texts and mythology has Buddha as a villain. Or someone who causes problems

Lol, just where did you hear that? From an American TV channel?

If what you said is true, The Journey to the West wouldn't be so popular that it got made into multiple TV series, cartoons, and video games. That story is all about Buddhism.

            Quote: Chapter 222
Who would believe that the Holy Maiden of the Jade Pool and the Buddha Child of the Burning Purity Temple aren't righteous? Who would ever believe that the two great Holy Lands are nothing but a hellscape of cannibalism?"

“Yes, in truth, it’s a Demon Immortal.” Hua Jin coughed lightly: “It just sounds better to call it a Buddhist Affinity. The power of the Great Thunder Monastery’s Buddhist cultivators all comes from Demon Immortals. That golden python just now was merely an avatar of a Demon Immortal. I suspect that Monk Fa Ming recently failed to seize a spiritual jade vein and was severely wounded. The Demon Immortal must have felt he was no longer useful, simply swallowed him, and took his place.”

“Doesn’t that mean the Great Thunder Monastery is entirely a den of demons?”

The concept had existed already, but the way the author use it is definitely new. If you're a reader, you'll have a feeling that the MC is grooming a girl since you get to know that the world inside the supposed "game" was real. However, the way the MC spends his money is not very logical. Sure, his days are numbered, but to spend 10,000+ in a week in a game was not something a broke and dying person would do.

What do you know about what a desperate man would feel and do? Sure, emptying your wallet for something so crazy is dumbfounding but a lot of people on their deathbed would probably do the same if thats what makes them happy during their numbered days.

I don't know what a dying person would do. However, there should be a limit to stupidity.

As far as I know (I couldn't quite remember the plot), the MC had terminal illness and just broke up with his GF because he's poor or something. Now, the MC spend all his money on a "digital girl" because they're much kinder than him compare to real person. How much of a loser is he that he didn't learn any lesson even when he's dying? He's so desperate that he let "the game company" suck all his savings just so he could feel a little bit of love.

Although his stupidity lead to this fortunate encounter and saved his life and even change his life somehow. It's still stupid and unreasonable.

Bro. Imagine this. You are dying from cancer. Youve got nothing on you. You dont have friends, the only few seem to only remember you when it matters. You dont have any relatives. Your girlfriend cheated on you. You have no one when you are slowly dying. Now you are lying on your bed and the only thing that is entertaining you in your pathetic life is a game. Why would you fcking care about what other people think? Why care about a company duping you out of your money, at least its bringing a little bit of excitement in your life. Why care about money you wont bring to afterlife? Its stupid to you because in your pov, you have a lot to lose. Never underestimate what sick patients could do before they die dude.

It's not about what what others think of him or the money he is using—the problem is, he would rather have illusory things. But yeah, I'm not certain what a desperate and pathetic person would do just to get little bit of happiness. However, I'm sure that even if I'm in my deathbed, I will not seek happiness in stupid thing like game—having a moment of peace and comfort is enough for me. Anyway, different people had different take on this. But again, it wouldn't change the fact that I think this is stupid.

What is the need of material things when you are dying? A desperate man wouldn't have the mind to search for happiness in those few moments when he can enjoy his limited time in material satisfaction

Wait I’m confused, why do you think a dying person wouldn’t spend his money? This game is clearly his emotional outlet and if spending his life savings on it makes him feel joy, then it’s worth it, he’s dying soon anyways so leaving the money is useless. Of course if he was truly selfless he could choose to donate to a charity but how many people would.

yes he could donate it to charity but chen hua'ian doesn't care about the world. he says that the world didn't care about him so he doesn't care about it either. so why would he donate to charity? that was also the main reason he didn't join the demon corps (or whatever its called I forgot) for moral reasons, he joined for the money so he can spend it on his game

I'm not saying he should save his money, but the plot just doesn't make sense. He just broke up with his GF, then went spend his money of digital girlfriend. There's a lot of place he could spend it on, why should he stay on digital GF? It's desperate.

he spends his money on the game because he is terminally ill and doing so makes him feel happy.
his parents are dead and he has no family, so its not like he can leave his money to someone he cares about after he dies, so why not spend it on something that makes you happy before you die? use your brain lmao.
and secondly, how is it grooming? are you sped? firstly, the girl isn't a minor and secondly nothing he's been doing has been sexual. hes simply taking care of his "disciple". he's simply giving her resources and helping her get stronger because doing so makes him happy. and yes on paper spending 10000 yuan a day (about 1K USD) is quite a lot but you have to consider that MC has nothing else to spend it on anyways. he cant afford treatment so he decided to give up and spent all of his money on his "game" since it makes him happy.
      TL;DR
      - His money spending makes sense
      - Hes not grooming the girl

if you think the girl is being groomed ur a bit tapped in the head

Tell me, the MC tried to peek to the girl when she's bathing or something, but we're prevented because the game tells him his connection has not reached that point yet. If you're foolish to believe that there's no sexual intent here, then be that foolish. Also, grooming is the word I choose because it's a game and a world of immortal, do you think age makes senses here? The MC is providing the girl with all kinds of things and is expecting a little bit of love or even owned the girl. That's why, I said grooming because he's literally grooming her to become stronger and make her indebted to him.

"I said grooming because he's literally grooming her to become stronger and make her indebted to him"
you're simply looking too far into it.
you forget that he's taken the role of her master and shes his disciple. ofc he's gonna make her stronger and give her resources.
secondly, he wasn't doing any of that expecting to get anything out of it except fulfillment. at the beginning, he literally just wanted to make her happy and to make her powerful because it gave him a sense of accomplishment. so I don't know why you said he wants to make her "indebted" to him? at first he didn't even know she was real so how would he even remotely have such feelings plus I'm caught up and he still doesn't act like that so I don't know what you're talking about. you see a male master and female disciple and automatically think of grooming
