It’s not bad, compared to the lot of the trash we get, but it doesn’t necessarily make it good. MC isn’t an asshole and doesn’t act like a hormonal teenager even though he 1000s(?) of years old which is good. The characters aren’t classic Chinese people who don’t have anything better to do than sneer at everyone less fortunate than them. World building thus far is already better than author’s other work, but again that was a dumpster fire, so being slightly less shit isn’t much of an achievement.

On the other side, author just blatantly lifts Pokémon just names them slightly differently. They have similar movesets and types as well… Not even a decent attempt to make it unique. Story is also pretty cliche. Weak pet -> strong pet with knowledge cheat. Supposedly ‘extremely well traveled cultivator’ but can’t come up with decent ways to make money. Arbitrary rankings and power scales. I can go on, but we’d be here all day

TL:DR Mediocre quality with cliche story underscored by sheer lack of effort when it comes to world building which is slightly offset by characters acting like people and not like generic asshole Chinese person template A.

It's so refreshing to read a novel about a reincarnated immortal that isn't a jaded arsehole but instead goes with the flow like a proper daoist should.
