Chapter 81-3: Gene Seed (3)

Two days later.

A post quickly shot up the popularity rankings on the forum.

[Who the hell made this thing? I’m asking who, don’t let me catch you. Is this even something a person can make?]

Poster: Happy Little Chick.

Aside from venting, I also want to warn everyone.

Do NOT buy the newly listed custom item ‘Gene Seed’ on the Trading House. I’ve already paid the price for being cheap.

Here’s what happened.

I recently stockpiled a batch of sacrificial power, planning to use it to raise my body tempering level so I could go hunting outside in my primary form.

To save on body tempering costs, I often browse the Trading House looking for deals, picking up spirit plants priced below cost.

This morning while browsing, I found a new custom item in the Trading House: ‘Gene Seed.’

The item description said it would increase body tempering level but cause bodily damage during enhancement. I figured: what’s a little damage? Even if I lost a limb, I could revive.

After consulting Guide and confirming that the body tempering experience gain was indeed higher than the cost, I spent 380 sacrificial power to buy one.

That decision nearly killed me with regret.

When I first swallowed it, I didn’t think much of it and was still planning to go on a group hunt afterward.

But the enhancement feedback taught me a brutal lesson.

How do I describe it? It was like a psionic bomb exploded inside me, like ten thousand fine needles pierced every inch of my flesh simultaneously. The phrase ‘ten thousand ants gnawing the heart’ materialized vividly in my mind. The pain was nearly suffocating, and my body convulsed uncontrollably.

I could clearly feel something moving inside me, and wherever it passed, it left a burning sensation.

The pain made me feel like I was about to meet my great-grandfather. My whole body went into muscle spasms, and my consciousness almost faded.

That hour felt like an entire century. At one point I even thought about letting myself die.

But I couldn’t bear to see over 300 sacrificial power go to waste. I had already endured 10-plus minutes, what were another 40 minutes? So I chose to chug healing potions and tough it out.

By the time the enhancement ended, I was completely drained.

And guess what?

Here’s the data (attached screenshot).

The enhancement gave me 534 body tempering experience. Buying the gene potion cost me 380 sacrificial power, plus 15 healing potions, totaling 530 sacrificial power.

I endured an hour of agony for a net profit of 4 sacrificial power.

If I had earned a few hundred more experience points, I might have accepted it as a dumb loss, but 4 sacrificial power? Who could stand that?

Do you know how I felt seeing that stat sheet? I nearly broke down. Cost price plus 4 profit. I just want to ask which maniac developed this. Have you even tested it yourself?

You’ve really got guts putting this up for sale. Who the hell would endure an hour of torture for 4 sacrificial power profit…

Everything stated above is 100% true.

Lastly, to the bastard who made this potion: don’t let me catch you!

Magic Baldy: Damn, gene seeds? Isn’t that the core tech for making super gene warriors in the real world? How did it show up in the game? The player who made this must be a real-world top-level expert. No ordinary person could access this kind of tech. Just how many elites have infiltrated this game?

Darkness Approaches: I’m dying laughing. The number of geniuses popping up lately is insane. First we had the Arms Dealers guild, now we secretly have a Doomsday Alchemist. And this Doomsday Alchemist actually dares to sell incomplete tech for money. Brutal. Luckily the OP tested it first, or I might’ve fallen for it out of curiosity.

Gene Frontline: I think new playstyles in the game are bound to face problems early on. Everyone should support them with an open mind. Once this technology matures, all players will benefit. Perhaps the team researching gene seeds is so short on sacrificial power that they had to sell gene potions to raise funds. OP’s suffering might have contributed to technological progress for us all.

Is This a Beaver? replied to Gene Frontline: After all your explanations, has it occurred to you that you might be the one selling these gene seeds? (Mystic Butterfly Disdain.jpg)

Gene Frontline replied to Is This a Beaver?: Don’t talk nonsense. My name just happens to include ‘gene,’ I don’t even know how to make gene seeds.

Game Gold-Farmer: Hahaha. An hour of suffering for 4 sacrificial power profit? The guy selling this potion must really be desperate for money. Otherwise, I can’t imagine what kind of twisted logic would make someone do something so wicked. But I’m looking forward to gene seed tech upgrades. The cost of body tempering experience is just too high. Hopefully this big shot can bring prices down.

Reading through the forum comments, Yu Ze felt deeply embarrassed.

If not for needing funds to finance the next stage of research upgrades, he wouldn’t have sold gene seeds at all.

Now that the situation had blown up, he decisively delisted the remaining three gene seeds from the Trading House.

All three were made using level 2 spirit plants, each costing over 350 sacrificial power to produce.

The post had already been pinned to the homepage’s hot topics. There was no way these remaining seeds would sell.

But to waste them like this felt unbearable.

At this thought, he turned to look at his team members who were fighting monsters nearby.

“I have something to tell you all. These last three gene seeds probably won’t sell. Why don’t we just use them ourselves?”

Hearing Yu Ze’s voice in the team chat, his team members had very interesting expressions. They all spoke up in the channel, politely offering to let others go first, creating a surprisingly harmonious atmosphere.
