Chapter 6

It wasn’t just Lobos, all the other Commanders present were now looking at me.

“Guden served under me for nearly 50 years. I think that his mana was just a little below yours, Lobos? Do you think you would have beaten him for sure if you fought him?”

“His hard skin would be troublesome for sure. But I would not lose.”

“You would overwhelm him with your speed, and damage him a little by little, perhaps? But he is a High Ogre. They’re a tough breed. And you would lose if he was able to land a serious hit. In a one on one battle, I wonder if your energy and fortitude would have lasted long enough? …Well, leaving that aside, what is certain is that Golan defeated him in Gekokujyo. The orb of control says so.”

“That’s true. Then it must be so.”

“Look at Golan. He is nearly unhurt. I am interested to know how he fought, but that’s not the problem here. As we can all tell, he has incredibly low mana. It’s practically a joke.”

“Yes.”

“I wonder how low it was before he became Commander. How was he able to beat Guden like that?”

“…”

“I think you understand what I mean. Golan can fight in a way that doesn’t rely entirely on the amount of mana he has. And so I am not allowing you to fight with him. We have a battle to wage tomorrow, and we can’t let anything get in the way of that, can we?”

“If that is your command, Nehyor. Yes.”

“So, now that we have settled the matter, let’s have a new chair brought to us. Golan, you must not take chairs away from other people. We didn’t have another one here, because Guden never bothered to show up.”

Nehyor clapped his hands and another chair was brought out.

I sat down, and the wise wolf sulkily got off of the table.

“Well, this is a good time to make introductions. To the left, we have Lobos and Bian. To the right, we have Iribo and Grobo. And this is Golan. You are all important comrades. Remember that.”

Lobos the wise wolf and Bian the flying eagle, huh.

And the goblins were Iribo and Grobo. Hmm, could I remember all that? I’d probably forget.

Iribo had a giant bow on is back, so he was likely an archer.

I had heard that the archers in that army were especially strong. Turns out, they were led by a goblin. That was surprising.

As the table was a rectangle, I sat down so that I was facing Corps Commander Nehyor.

“Now, let’s begin. I want you all to look at the map.”

Everyone’s eyes fell to the map that was spread out on the table.

…I didn’t get it. Now that I think about it, where were we?

I had underestimated the war council of demons.

Perhaps it was because I had spent so much time with meathead ogres. I had not even dreamed that such advanced strategies were being discussed day and night.

Well, maybe that was an exaggeration.

But I was impressed that they all took the whole thing very seriously. And what I meant by that…

“As we have a newcomer with us today, I will explain as I go.”

And so Corps Commander Nehyor explained the plan in great detail to us.

It was all nonsense to me in the beginning, but I slowly started to understand what he was saying.

“And so–here. We have to protect the lookout hill over here.”

The place that we were currently located was called the lookout hill. I didn’t even know that.

“In short, yes. That’s very good, Golan.”

Was he mocking me? Or praising me? I couldn’t tell.

But this war wasn’t too complicated.

The enemy wanted to defeat us, and so soldiers invaded our country.

In order to stop them, several corps were sent out to drive them back.

We were defending the lookout hill.

The main base where Corps Commander Nehyor resided was on the top of this hill. It was from here that we defended in three separate groups.

    The rest of the chapter:

“It was 50 days ago where the frontlines were pushed back. Currently, we are losing ground every day as we defend this hill. So, do you have any ideas, Golan?”

“…Hmph. Ask an ogre for advice, and they’ll just tell you to charge in blindly. It’s a waste of time to ask them.”

Lobos continued to mock me. Well, I wasn’t going to ignore him.

“Well, it’s true. If my army charged into them and took down their base, the enemy would be forced to retreat.”

“Hmm. And why do you think that, Golan?”

Huh. How should I explain it? I knew the result, but it could fall either way depending on different factors.

“Our main base is on top of the hill, and so the enemy has split their army into three in order to take it down.”

“Indeed. And we have Lobos stationed in the center and the brothers, Iribo and Grubo on the left and right.”

So, they were brothers. It was rare to see goblin brothers who were both commanders.

Goblin brothers… Hmm, I shall call them the Gob-gob Brothers.

“The Gob-gob brothers contain the enemy with arrows and drive them back with spears if they get too close, so they are defenders. The center focuses on the offensive. In that case, it’s my army that determines the results of the battle.”

I heard a few gasps at ‘Gob-gob Brothers,’ but I ignored them.

“That’s pretty much what I’ve been explaining, yes.”

“Say we succeeded in taking the enemy’s base. They will be forced to retreat. As they have now lost their stronghold, they will have to strengthen their defenses. It will be harder for them to go on the offense. And so we can easily take their central attack force from behind. …Like this.”

The enemy’s central army would be attacked by Lobos and us.

Armies became fragile when attacked on both sides.

This was because if you have enemies on both sides and can’t receive any accurate information, you’ll start jumping at shadows.

It was difficult to maintain order when you had to fight with the fear of knowing that you could not retreat.

Especially when you were invading enemy territory. It would be a tragedy if you couldn’t run.

And once the central army fell, the rest was easy.

The enemy will have to focus on defending.

And going on the defensive on enemy territory was fatal.

In order to recover, they would have to fall back to somewhere safe.

In other words, we just needed to wait and the enemy would retreat.

I explained this, and Nehyor said, ‘Huh. You’re an ogre who can actually think.’ I suppose it was a compliment?

“But that is only if the bastard can actually make the enemy retreat and take their position. It’s been nearly 50 days since the battle started, and his army has yet to even reach the enemy base.”

    That hurt.

We were just a group of meatheads. The wraiths had continued to slaughter us.

“That was because I wasn’t the commander. I could have done it in a day.”

“Hmph. You talk a big game.”

“Lobos, be quiet for a minute… Golan. Can you really do it?”

“Yes. I have only been here for 3 days, but I can see victory already. It won’t be a problem.”

“I see. Very well. …I hope that you won’t disappoint me.”

“Commander Nehyor. Are you going to take these jokes seriously?”

“I don’t know. But Golan says he can do it, so maybe he can? Besides, I’m curious about the other battlefield. If we can win, then we should win. What do you think? Lobos.”

“If that’s what you say, Commander Nehyor… I have no objection.”

“Then it’s decided! Golan. I’m counting on you!”

And like that, it was decided that I would take the enemy stronghold on the following day. The meeting was over.

Uh? Was I getting ahead of myself?

I laughed pretty hard. Good translation and demon Mc. Hopefully he's not a typical beta Japanese and this will be a top 10 story.
