Chapter 949: Value

"What do you know?" the Sun's avatar asked.

The Amorphous Race had deliberated everything.

The three concepts that had remained at the end were…

Kill Nick.

Stop him from advancing.

Ask for more information.

Naturally, the concept the Strategist sent to the engineer was to ask for more information.

"I have learned a lot," Nick said. "I know that the humans from around 27,000 years ago succeeded or almost succeeded in destroying the machine."

"I know that this planet is used for profit. What we know as Prephyx is a waste product. It has almost no value."

"I know that what we call Zephyx is highly valuable and easy to transport. Prephyx is being turned into Zephyx via what I call suffering."

"We Specters are responsible for causing this suffering, which transforms Prephyx into Zephyx. The Zephyx is then harvested at the end of the era and brought away."

"As a Specter, I am pure Zephyx. Killing me is very profitable."

"Because of that, my actions have to bring more value than my Zephyx can bring."

"If I want to live forever, I need to remain profitable."

"If I hide underground, I will be harvested."

"Hiding underground is not safe for me."

"You are the owner of this planet."

"If I do not act in your full interest, I will not be able to live forever."

After Nick stopped speaking, the council of the Amorphous Race went into another exchange and refinement of concepts.

Countless possibilities were struck down by the Representatives.

One of these concepts was running a full analysis of Nick's abilities.

The reason why it was shut down was simple.

Wastage of resources.

Nick was wrong about one thing.

This Zephyx Mine didn't exist for profit.

It was not owned by a company.

It was owned by the Mother, and the Zephyx harvested here would directly go to her.

The Mother needed Zephyx.

The Amorphous Race was not the only race in the universe, and even more, the Amorphous Race was not united.

There were many tribes, and they were in a constant process of evolutionary refinement.

That meant war.

They didn't want the Zephyx.

They NEEDED it.

Another concept that they shot down was to reshape Nick's mind, and it was rejected for the same reason.

Resource wastage.

The only reason why Nick's abilities were still relatively secret was the presence of the Representatives.

The Sun was a gigantic machine, and using any of its abilities required a huge injection of Pure Energy.

Something like the Sun's avatar wasn't costly to create.

Granting abilities also wasn't costly.

But the remaining functions were quite costly, and the Mother couldn't accept wasting resources on that.

The Generators, which was what they called Specters, were designed to be safe.

Even if one of them revolted, the Sun could kill them very easily, and even if something happened to the Sun, the Generators were designed to die under the avalanche of Star Energy.

Additionally, the Generators were designed to value their lives above everything else, and destroying the Sun would go against their primary directive.

Lastly, destroying the Sun wouldn't give a Specter anything of value.

They could only grow stronger by working with humans.

Killing the Sun wouldn't do anything for them.

Therefore, using resources to make sure a Specter wasn't dangerous was a waste.

After another refinement of concepts took place, the Sun's avatar spoke up again.

"What can you give to us?" it asked.

The dynamic had changed.

The Sun had just referred to itself as us.

"As an Initial Adversary, I already had the capabilities to eradicate almost all technological progress of Aegis," Nick said. "As an Eternal, this capability will only increase in value."

"You do not need an Envious Researcher if I am present."

"I also have the power to kill any human weaker than a Savior already. My perception already covers half of the planet, and when I am an Eternal, it will cover all of it."

"I am also not limited by my intelligence or fixed presence. I can travel to places with light and without light."

"I can make autonomous decisions, and my decisions will be aligned with your goal since I know your goal."

"I might be a machine, but in human terms, I can also be an employee or a manager."

"You can communicate with me and give me complex orders. You do not need to change the Nightmare or the Null, which is probably not very easy."

"The only thing you need to do to make me do what you want is to talk to me. There are not many more resource-efficient methods of changing the planet."

"I can be your supervisor, and you do not need to pay me."

"I just don't want to die. That's it."

"I'm cheap, capable, and I can affect things all over the world. I know what you want, and what you want is also what I want."

After Nick finished speaking, another concept refinement took place.

This time, it ended with three concepts again, but the concepts were different.

Disallow Nick from advancing.

Allow Nick to ascend.

Ask for more information.

Yes, the concept of killing Nick was no longer there.

The Representatives had shut that down after Nick had stated his value.

Now, the decision was whether to permit his advancement or not.

"You can achieve all of that as a Peak Adversary already. Why do you need to become an Eternal?" the Sun's avatar asked.

"Because we are missing an Eternal," Nick said. "Nurse Alice will become an Early Eternal soon, and she will be very difficult to suppress."

"You need an Initial Eternal."

"As the primary suppressor of technology and power, I will be the primary target."

"I don't need to become an Eternal."

"But it would be convenient and cheap."

Another refinement of concepts happened.

This time, the Sun's Avatar remained quiet for only a single second.

The reason was simple.

The Representatives shot down almost all concepts.

They even shot down the concept of asking Nick for more information.

They were all busy, and the more time they spent with Nick, the more resources they were wasting.

The Strategists wanted to make sure that there was not some kind of hidden danger to them inside of Nick, but the stinginess of the Representatives made that impossible.

So, the Strategists were forced to make a decision.

However, the decision also wasn't bad.

After all, Generators were designed to be non-threatening to the machine.

The Strategists just valued safety much more.

But, well… they didn't have infinite resources.

They had to make do with what they had.

"We accept your offer."

    Chap 950 Eternal

Nick didn't show it, but he was filled with relief.

    He had bet correctly.

He had been betting on the aliens' greed, and the bet had paid off.

The aliens wanted as much Zephyx as possible, and he was using their desires to his advantage.

"What do you want me to do?" Nick asked.

"For now, nothing," the Sun's avatar answered after a short time. "This cycle is progressing as expected. Do not cause unnecessary damage to the era, and do not advance another level. The only thing you have to do is wait. When the next cycle begins, we will tell you what to do."

"Then, I will be vanishing from the world until the cycle ends. How will I know when it ends?" Nick asked.

"We are going to tell you a century in advance," the Sun's avatar spoke.

Nick nodded. "Then, I hope for a profitable partnership."

"We expect you to live up to your promises," the Sun's avatar said.

    Then, the Sun's avatar vanished.

Nick wanted to take a deep breath, but that was still too suspicious.

    His ability hadn't reactivated yet.

Then, for several minutes, Nick just kept sitting in the isolated room.

Finally, he felt the familiar draw of the advancement space.

    'It's finally time,' Nick thought.

Nick watched his surroundings warp, and when they were done warping, he saw an endless sea of suffering humans.

    There were millions upon millions.

Nick had already thought of an ability he wanted over the past thousand years, and he searched for it.

This would be the last new ability he would receive from the Sun.

What was it that Nick needed?

Nick's perception was already as high as it needed to be.

The Null's ability and the Maw's ability took care of that.

Nick's escape abilities had already been pushed to a level that nothing on Earth could capture him, except for the Null, maybe.

Additionally, escaping was no longer important.

If he got found out by the aliens, escape wouldn't be an option.

    What about offensive capabilities?

Yes, those could be increased, but there was an issue.

How was he going to explain to the Sun why he chose greater attacking power?

He was supposed to be the first Eternal to get suppressed.

Increasing his offensive capabilities would make it much harder to suppress him.

    Intelligence?

That couldn't be increased any further.

    Defense?

Nick could already turn into a Physical Specter, a Force Specter, and a human. That gave him all the defense he would ever need. Additionally, he could retreat by using several other abilities.

    Physical power?

Again, Nick couldn't explain that to the aliens.

    Zephyx regeneration?

Maybe, but that was not that useful.

    Nick's choices were limited.

As he walked to the end of his very complex path, creating a very specific ability, he stopped.

"Why have you chosen this ability?" Nick heard in his mind.

"I need to learn more about humanity. The more I know about them, the better my decisions will be," Nick answered.

    Nick didn't receive an answer.

Instead, the Sun started to become brighter in the advancement space.

The next moment, Nick was transported to his Specter Core.

By now, the diagrams were no longer as complicated.

He understood what most of them did.

A new diagram came down from the Sun and integrated into Nick's Specter Core.

He watched as the diagram grew in his Specter Core, and Nick could see how it was created.

Most of the time, the diagram was being created faster than Nick could understand it, but with time, he would be able to understand the entire thing.

When the diagram was integrated, Nick's other diagrams started to expand.

Of course, his self-created diagrams didn't get touched in any way.

For several minutes, Nick saw the sizes of his diagrams increasing dramatically.

The diagrams representing the Maw and the Nightmare didn't increase as much, but the others increased drastically.

All the other diagrams started to split into two and expanded even more.

By the end, all diagrams were of equal complexity and size.

Every diagram now had two branches.

    'As expected,' Nick thought.

'The Maw and the Nightmare gave me two abilities each since they were Eternals.'

'The Null never gave me two abilities since my Zephyx Synchronizer synchronized with it. I only got the base level, and it advanced like all the other abilities.'

'Now, there is no more differentiation between powers.'

'Everything has reached the power of an Eternal, which means everything, besides the Nightmare and Maw's abilities, has gained a completely new ability while also improving the base ability.

As an Adversary, Nick should have had eight abilities, but since he had worked with two Eternals as a human, he had had ten.

Now, as an Eternal, Nick's abilities had increased dramatically.

It went from 10 to 18.

Yes, Nick had 18 total abilities now.

A new ability relating to the Null had appeared.

The abilities from the Fog and the Blinding Light each received another ability.

Finally, the abilities Nick had chosen for himself had received another ability.

Naturally, Nick's newest ability also came as two abilities.

    18 abilities.

'This is as far as I can go,' Nick thought. 'My power has increased exceptionally, but that is where my growth mostly ends. I can create some more abilities, but I won't be able to add a lot of new abilities with this level of power.'

Nick closed his eyes and inspected his new abilities.

There was a lot to learn, and he had to test them out for a bit.

Nick decided to go from old to new.

First, he checked the two abilities from the Null.

By now, Nick's primary ability should be on the same level as the Null's primary ability.

The way Nick saw the world was how the Null saw the world.

'This is a terrifying level of perception,' Nick thought.

The beams were still leading out of Nick, but that was not all.

If Nick focused on one of the beams, he could see an image.

As he focused on the Champion's beam, Nick could see the Champion sitting on his throne.

Even more, Nick intrinsically knew what the Champion knew about him.

    Chap 951 The Null

    It was terrifying.

Nick could see every memory of the Champion that was related to him.

He could even see the wrong guesses he had made.

One had to remember one thing.

The Champion was inside his office, which was inside Aegis' headquarters.

This was the most fortified place any human had ever created.

With Nick's normal perception, he couldn't see anything that was going on inside without entering.

Yet, he could see the Champion clearly.

It didn't matter where the Champion was.

    He could still perceive him.

And since Nick could perceive him…

He could also use his abilities that relied on perception.

For example, he could teleport right into the Champion's office.

He could also summon illusions around the Champion.

With this power, Nick had complete control over humanity.

He could stay deep underground for his entire life and could still cause misery and damage all over the world.

Humanity wouldn't be able to find him, while he could always perceive them, as long as they knew about him.

'The Null is terrifying,' Nick thought. 'If it were intelligent, I would have never been able to get to where I am today.'

'I know a lot about the Null. In fact, I'm pretty sure I know more about it than necessary to become its target.'

'Most likely, it has already looked at me before.'

'And yet, my ability has never deactivated.'

'Is it because I'm a Specter?'

    'Most likely.'

'I was never sure about it, but I think the Null doesn't target Specters at all.'

    'But now, I'm sure.'

Then, Nick looked at the new ability the Null had given him, the one he had received after becoming an Eternal.

    It was a familiar one.

One he had already heard about.

    Nick looked at Giovanni.

By now, Giovanni was close to death.

He had led the underground city for almost an entire millennium.

Nick told Giovanni that he needed to test something and that Giovanni shouldn't be afraid.

The next moment, Nick activated his new ability.

Giovanni started to sweat, and he held his head in pain.

Nick stopped a moment later and thanked him for bearing with him.

'This is how the Null deals with the people who know about it.'

'I can cause damage and suffering based on what they know about me.'

'The more they know about me, the greater the damage will be.'

'If someone knows everything about me, I could even kill a Savior with this.'

The next moment, Nick looked at all the other beams.

He made an inventory of all the people who knew about him.

He also took note of the few Specters that knew about him.

Finally, there were only two beams left.

    One of them pointed upwards.

    The other one pointed downwards.

One of the beams led to the Sun, or the aliens.

    The other one…

Had to lead to the Null.

Nick looked at the beam leading upwards first.

'I can only see the Sun,' Nick thought.

He could see a gigantic forcefield surrounding Earth.

Naturally, the beam led beyond that forcefield, but Nick couldn't see beyond it.

The Sun isolated all Specters, and it was impossible to see past it.

'Additionally, there's a possibility that my ability needs Prephyx or Zephyx as a medium to work. Space is filled with Star Energy, and Star Energy is the nemesis of Zephyx.'

The next moment, Nick took a deep breath.

Then, he focused on the Null's beam.

The Null's beam was a very light red.

    It was almost white.

This meant the Null basically knew nothing about Nick except for the fact that he was a Specter.

Finally, after almost 2,000 years, Nick saw the Null.

    It was nothing.

    It was empty.

    And yet, it was there.

    Where was the Null?

Surprisingly, it was inside an extremely durable biological prison.

A sphere of hardened muscle surrounded an empty space.

Nick couldn't perceive the Null directly.

He could only perceive it by looking at the space he couldn't see.

It was like his perception just showed an empty space, but the empty space had blind spots.

The blind spots moved around chaotically without any rhyme or reason.

As Nick looked at the blind spots, he could feel something.

The blind spots were looking back.

The Null was looking at Nick.

And yet, Nick's ability was still active.

A moment later, Nick felt Zephyx shooting out of the Null, and he saw the Zephyx rushing right towards him.

It was the ability that caused damage based on knowledge.

The very ability that the Null used to kill anyone who knew too much about him.

Nick watched the enemy Zephyx rushing towards his Specter Core.

    And then…

    Nothing happened.

'I see,' Nick thought. 'It's not that you don't target Specters.'

'It's just that your ability doesn't work on Specters.'

'Most likely, you have tried to kill me before, but since I was a Specter, it never worked.'

'And since you can't leave this cage, you also can't attack me via other means.'

Nick remembered the time when he had told the aliens about Rising Star Base and Piercing Heaven Base.

'Did the aliens release the Null and order it to do something? With just this ability, it can't possibly deal with an entire base.'

    'Although…'

    Nick focused on Aegis' database.

He couldn't only see information that a living being knew.

He could also see information stored in machines.

As Nick focused on the database, he activated his ability to cause damage based on memory.

    He could feel it.

If he wanted to, he could destroy Aegis' entire database just because it contained information about him.

'It's also possible that the aliens simply beam information regarding the Null into the machines. Then, the Null takes care of these machines.'

'However, the Null didn't deal with the Jolly Cannibal and the Ice Maiden.'

'Most likely, the Sun used some kind of failsafe that instantly deletes Specters.'

Nick looked back at the Null.

It was still sending Zephyx to him.

'It really wants to kill me desperately.'

'But as long as it is contained, I am safe from it.'

    Nick took a deep breath.

    'Yet, if it breaks out…'

As Nick looked at the Null, he could only feel one thing.

    Power.

The Null was far more powerful than Nick had anticipated.

'At least, it's a Peak Eternal.'

'It could even be at the tenth level…'

'If this thing breaks out, I will die.'

A question — can Specters create Zephyx only with humans, or can they do it with any sentient creatures and Prephyx?

If it's the second option, they could be a great menace to the universe. We know Prephyx is like poison to everything except Specters, and surely there's a lot of Prephyx if all species in the universe use pure energy.

It’s probably not just limited to humans judging from how technological zephyx generators function. The process makes use of a transformation of potential energy, a powerful human has a lot of potential energy so they’re a good target but that’s not exclusive to them.
