Chapter 58: Preparing to Be a Sneaky Bastard for Once |
“Father Matthew, did you discover something?”
Lilith asked worriedly.
“You’re being followed.” Matthew paused for a moment as he spoke. “But judging from your reactions, it seems you already knew.”
Right after saying that, Matthew’s gaze shifted toward Vivian.
“I assume this is the famous Miss Vivian.”
Famous?
Hearing that title, Jiang Chen immediately became interested.
This NPC really knew how to talk.
“That’s right, I am the famous Vivian.”
“So, what brings the two of you here?”
“To seek refuge,” Vivian answered.
“This...” Matthew was rendered speechless.
So she was just going to say it outright like that?
Fortunately, Matthew usually dealt with all sorts of strange believers, so after a brief moment of awkwardness, he made a welcoming gesture.
“Our church is a neutral faction. We will not involve ourselves in your troubles.”
Hearing that, Lilith subconsciously looked at Matthew, her eyes filled with pleading.
“Father Matthew, we really need your help.”
“Just let us stay for one night...”
But Matthew still shook his head.
“If you’re here to pray, then you are welcome. However, you will still need to leave before the church closes.”
“But...” Lilith wanted to say more, only to be interrupted by Vivian.
Vivian stepped forward and stared directly at Matthew.
“We are here to pray.”
Matthew shook his head. “Obviously, you are not.”
In response, Vivian shook her head as well.
“As unbelievable as it may sound, I am a devout believer. Followers of the gods are one family. Now that your family has come to pray, not only are you refusing to welcome us, you’re even driving us away. Doesn’t your conscience hurt?”
Hearing Vivian’s words, Matthew gained a whole new understanding of her shameless persistence.
At that moment, he really wanted to ask: if you’re spouting nonsense inside a church, wouldn’t your own conscience hurt first?
But considering his position, he maintained his smile.
“Miss Vivian, you don’t even know which god our church worships.”
“How could I not know?”
As she spoke, Vivian scanned the surroundings of the church but failed to find any useful clues.
She awkwardly glanced at Matthew before pulling Lilith aside.
“Hey Lilith, which god does this church worship?”
Hearing Vivian’s question, Lilith was also speechless.
“Ilmater, the God of Suffering and Endurance.”
“Ilmater?”
By now, Jiang Chen had already grown accustomed to the game’s bizarre god settings.
At the moment, the most important thing was fooling this NPC.
Listening to the two whispering to each other, Matthew was starting to lose it a little.
Couldn’t she at least ask quietly?
She was asking right in front of him. Did she really think he was an idiot?
And so...
Outside the church.
Without anyone noticing, night had already fallen. The magical street lamps along both sides of the road had lit up, their orange-yellow glow barely enough to illuminate the path.
The cold winter wind swept past, making Lilith shiver involuntarily.
“Damn it, we actually got kicked out. I even spent one Gold Coin buying holy water from him during the day. I’m never supporting his business again!”
Her tone was filled with indignation.
“So, Vivian, where are we going next?”
The apartment was no longer an option, and the church refused to take them in.
Where they would stay tonight had become a major problem.
Hearing Lilith’s question, Vivian’s gaze had already shifted toward a certain spot hidden in the darkness.
“They’re still following me?”
“So what exactly is the aggro mechanic in this game?”
Jiang Chen frowned deeply.
Previously, he had basically killed every monster instantly after engaging them, so he never really understood the aggro mechanics of this game.
Now that most of his skills had already been used up, Jiang Chen finally realized that the mechanics of this game were far more complicated than he had imagined.
“In other games, if a monster follows you for a certain distance without attacking for a while, or if you leave a certain area, the aggro resets.”
Jiang Chen stared toward a spot in the darkness and muttered to himself:
“Coming to the church was to confirm whether this game had something like safe houses.”
“And I also wanted to test the monster aggro mechanics.”
Looking at the familiar red name, Jiang Chen raised an eyebrow.
“Does the aggro mechanic in this game never reset? It’s been following me for this long already.”
“And the distance covered isn’t short either.”
But none of that mattered anymore.
Since this monster refused to leave, Jiang Chen naturally wasn’t going to hold back either.
“You’ve been tailing me this whole time, and just because I didn’t make a move, you actually think I didn’t notice you? A rotten loach soaked in a bit of seawater really thinks it’s seafood now.”
As he spoke, Jiang Chen calmly pulled Lilith along the road as if they were simply taking a walk, heading toward a certain direction.
“Um, Vivian, where are we going?”
Jiang Chen, who was currently using this method to approach the monster’s hiding spot before launching a sudden attack, froze for a moment.
This NPC really had no sense of timing. Couldn’t she see he was preparing to engage the monster?
Still, in order not to expose himself, Jiang Chen casually answered her.
“The Enforcement Bureau.”
“The... Enforcement Bureau?” Lilith failed to react for a moment.
Why were they going to the Enforcement Bureau?
Not long ago, she had personally killed an Enforcement Officer from there. What exactly were they going there for now?
“Y-You’re not thinking of turning yourself in, are you?” Vivian asked cautiously.
“Something like that...” Vivian answered casually.
At that moment, all her attention was already focused on the direction where the hidden monster was lurking.
As the distance closed further and further, Jiang Chen became slightly nervous.
For some reason, when he fought monsters head-on in games, he never felt much.
But now that he was preparing to ambush someone, the thought of becoming a sneaky bastard for once actually made him feel a little excited.
Watching the two lolis on the screen who looked like they were merely taking a stroll, Jiang Chen concentrated with full focus.
“So you like hiding and ambushing people, huh? Let’s see how you like getting ambushed yourself.”
“Damn, why does this feel even more exciting than soloing a BOSS?”
At the same time, Jiang Chen was also extremely curious about what expression this monster would have after his sneak attack succeeded.
But given the level of detail in this game, it probably wouldn’t disappoint him.
Thinking of this, Jiang Chen glanced at the surrounding environment and suddenly seemed to realize something.
“I knew something felt off earlier. Turns out the problem is the night itself!”
The night itself?
Hearing Lord God’s words, Vivian was filled with confusion.
What exactly did the Evil God mean by that...?
Vivian admitted she couldn’t understand it at all.
Everything around her looked exactly the same as the nights she usually saw. Under the dim street lamps, the road was barely visible, while the areas beyond the reach of the light were pitch black.
What was wrong with that?
