      It's kind of a gimmick of the story, but it's also a necessary consequence of the NPCs being autonomous. The NPCs are able to react 'realistically' to the events around them. So how would they react when they watch someone die and then not be dead shortly afterwards? The only way to prevent them from reacting is to make them forget.
