Very rarely are the capabilities of countries concentrated in the hands of so few people. There is, however, a case to be made that there are certain individuals with irreplaceable qualities.

Yet, more often than not, those individuals, especially when assassinated, prove to be more valuable in their demise than when they were alive. They are made martyrs of a just, repressed cause. And a new leader emerges, a righteous avenger, filled with concern for the deceased and lament for their ideals. This grants him the goodwill of the people and the blessing to do what otherwise, amidst dissent that is now funereal silence, even the previous leader wouldn't be able to achieve.
That is the power of martyrdom, which is especially important in democratic countries, where a decision has to take voters into account(at least to some extent).

Now, I'm not saying that in this particular case the result would be unfavourable. Just that it requires more careful consideration. If one or two people die, it might throw the upper strata into chaos, a brawl for power, during which, the country is unstable and might not react as well, or as quickly, to your manoeuvres.
What this will become, a wasted opportunity, a wonderfully executed strategy or a clusterf*ck,
      Time will tell.

If a common link is constructed and linked with the Empire not wanting a Alliance it vould be pinned on them however shallow. The best counter for this narrative is to have internal forces be blamed. Like the "Far right did it" "empire loving vastards" better than the Empire itself.
