Chapter 2: The Succubus Paladin

Chapter 2: The Succubus Paladin

Bai Xuan gazed at the ten Character Settings arrayed before him, deep in contemplation.

He needed to choose three, and somehow blend them into a coherent character.

Some combinations were obviously out of the question—[Aunt] and [Little Boy] made no sense together, and pairing [Mature Beauty] with [Goblin] was just as bizarre.

Of all the options, [Paladin] was without a doubt the strongest choice.

Then there was [Sword of No Light]—he had no idea what it truly meant, but the name alone sounded formidable.

A Paladin wielding the Sword of No Light.

That was it.

But the real dilemma was the third Character Setting.

[Lovesick Fool]?

That sounded even worse than [Slime].

After a brief hesitation, Bai Xuan decided to use a refresh.

That’s what Refresh Scrolls were for, after all.

“Refresh.”

[Little Boy] → [Uncle]

“Refresh!”

[Uncle] → [Succubus]

“Huh?”

Bai Xuan’s eyes lit up at the newly generated option.

[Succubus] was clearly superior to the others—a race innately gifted with magic. The only potential issue was whether it would conflict with [Paladin].

But that didn’t matter. One was a race, one an occupation. There wouldn’t be any deep-level code conflicts.

This was the one.

[Editing Character Settings…]

[You have selected: “Succubus Paladin wielding the Sword of No Light”!]

[Summoning a legend that fits your Character Settings…]

As the text flickered, a radiant light erupted before him!

At the same time, a cold, ethereal oath echoed in Bai Xuan’s mind:

[Justice! Order! Divine Judgment! Honor! Sacrifice! Valor! Compassion! Humility!]

[I swear to fight for justice! I swear to fight for the world! I swear to fight for you!]

Within the dazzling brilliance, a female knight took form—clad in white-gold armor, with long, pale golden hair cascading down her back.

The moment she appeared, she fixed her sea-blue eyes on Bai Xuan, who sat on the sofa. Her voice was clear and steady:

“Are you my Master?”

“Yes…”

Bai Xuan nodded, though a flicker of uncertainty crossed his mind.

He felt none of the effects he’d expected from the [Succubus] setting.

In his imagination, a succubus should exude an irresistible aura—one glance, and any man would be ensnared.

But the blonde knight before him, though stunning—far surpassing any celebrity he’d ever seen—was cold and distant, her gaze tranquil as still water. She had the bearing of a true paladin, untouched by mortal desire.

“Hello, I’m Bai Xuan.”

Pushing aside his doubts, Bai Xuan offered his hand naturally.

At that moment, her information materialized on the blue system screen:

[Serene]

[Age: 23]

[Rarity: Epic]

[Level: F (linked to you)]

[Class: Paladin (Blue)]

[Race: Succubus (Blue)]

[Affection: 60]

[Attributes: Strength A, Agility A, Constitution A, Spirit S]

[Ability: Sword of No Light (Purple)]

[Hidden Settings: ?, ? (Complete character quests to unlock hidden settings)]

[Character Quest: Not yet available]

[Paladin (Blue): A paladin of the Holy See (Sacred Oath), possessing most standard paladin abilities.]

[Succubus (Blue): A demon race from the Abyss, renowned for voluptuous beauty (measurements: 97.5-62-90), unparalleled charm (Charm: 100), and mastery of most succubus arts.]

[Sword of No Light (Purple): Wields a sword that, in theory, can cut through anything—no light, no shadow, no form, no sound.]

…Epic!

1.98%!

Bai Xuan couldn’t help but grin. His luck truly was remarkable.

And the Sword of No Light—just as powerful as he’d hoped!

Top-tier stats across the board, the combined powers of a paladin and a succubus—this legendary summon exceeded all expectations.

“My name is Serene.”

The knight extended her hand to meet his, her tone composed. “I hope my sword will serve you well.”

As she spoke, her hand moved instinctively to her side, as if to grasp a sword.

Bai Xuan followed her motion, only to realize her hand closed on empty air—she was miming a sword’s hilt, but holding nothing at all.

So this was the Sword of No Light?

Having summoned his very first legend, Bai Xuan’s attention turned to the blue system interface. With a thought, he opened the [World Quest] menu.

Instantly, a world map appeared, dotted with countless red lights scattered across the globe.

Each red dot represented an unresolved Anomalous Disaster somewhere in the world. The brighter the dot, the higher the Anomaly’s level.

[Mission Map]

[Map Level: 1 (0/5)] (Complete five missions to level up)

[Teleportation Function: The teleportation array can only be activated once per day; resets at midnight.]

[Tip: Raise your map level to unlock more daily teleports and additional features.]

With another thought, Bai Xuan locked the mission area to Ninghang City in Huaguo.

[There are 6 available missions in this area.]

A list of mission details appeared, showing the current Anomalous Disasters in Ninghang City—four F-grade and two E-grade.

He skimmed the options and selected one to expand.

[World Quest: Ghoul of Carrion]

[Mission Difficulty: F]

[Mission Location: Near Baida Plaza, Ninghang City, Huaguo]

[Mission Description: A ghoul is lurking near Baida Plaza, hunting for tonight’s dinner.]

[Mission Tip: It fears holy light. Watch out for its kagune!]

[Mission Reward: ?]

Translator’s Note: “Kagune” is a Japanese term popularized by Tokyo Ghoul, referring to a predatory organ or appendage used by ghouls for attack.

“Kagune?”

Bai Xuan raised an eyebrow.

What kind of ghoul is this?

Still, with Serene’s paladin skills, they’d have a clear advantage.

Bai Xuan accepted the mission. Instantly, a system prompt appeared:

[Teleport to mission vicinity?]

“Yes.”

[Teleportation array activated!]

A pink magic circle shimmered into existence on the living room floor.

“Let’s go, Serene.”

“Mm.”

Bai Xuan and Serene stepped into the array, and in the next instant, pink light engulfed them both.

A flash—and the two vanished from sight.

…

“Oh~ Miss~”

In a shadowed alley, a purple-haired woman with glasses—camera in hand—snapped photos of a cosplayer sprawled lifeless in a pool of blood.

She clicked the shutter, her mouth watering as she praised her subject:

“Your body is exquisite~”

“Such flawless, snowy skin… those slender, jade-like limbs… and that luscious chest~”

“You’re a true masterpiece~”

“I’m completely smitten~”

“I wish we could be together forever!”

“But… I’m hungry~”

As she spoke, her fingertips plunged straight through the woman’s chest, reaching for the heart, which she tore free.

Like a connoisseur sampling a delicacy, she brought the heart to her lips.

“What are you doing?”

Suddenly, a security officer appeared at the mouth of the alley, his eyes widening at the bloody scene as he shouted:

“Hey—!”

The woman let out a long, disappointed sigh. “Why does someone always interrupt my meal? Next time, I’ll pick a more private ‘restaurant’.”

As a ghoul, Xu Yan despised nothing more than having her dinner interrupted. It instantly soured her mood.

As she spoke, the officer switched on his flashlight, the beam illuminating the blood-soaked carnage.

He immediately radioed in, “This is Baida Plaza, Seventh Street. We’ve got a homicide! Suspicious female at the scene—requesting backup, now!”

He barely finished before drawing his sidearm and aiming it at Xu Yan, barking, “Hands up! Don’t move!”

“I really hate it when people interrupt my dinner~ So…”

Xu Yan wiped a bloodstained finger across her lips, then fixed the officer with a chilling gaze. “Do me a favor and just die for me, will you~?”

As the words left her mouth, a blood-red, scorpion-like tail burst forth from her back.

“Shit! An Anomaly!”

Bang! Bang! Bang!

“Ah!”

Gunshots rang out, blending with the officer’s agonized screams…
