Chapter 70

After all, being good at making use of external objects is a strength. But relying too much on external items as a crutch is ultimately not advisable.

"Old bastard..."

Spitting in disdain in secret, Wang Yu was certain that the three people with Liu Jinxian would not conceal the situation for him. Looking at things now, he could only run.

Return to the Blood Reversal Sect?

The sect had rules, but supervision was poor. People often went missing inside the sect. As long as there were no witnesses, they almost never investigated. If you died, you died, and the corpse would be turned into materials to cultivate the sect’s disciples.

Wang Yu had killed no fewer than ten already, so the sect’s main grounds simply could not give him any sense of safety.

Unless he moved into the Law Enforcement Hall — but that brought another problem. If he went to the Law Enforcement Hall, he would have to work for that second-generation Foundation Establishment cultivator surnamed Zhuo, providing him with spirit stones. That did not suit his temperament, nor did he have that kind of idle slot.

Cold Blood Peak’s True Disciple Su was also a tangled mess. It looked like he was still under his command, but in reality he had been acting alone for a long time.

Placing his hopes on that man would be like seeking his own death. At a critical moment, Zhao Shang might stab him in the back as well.

The Blood Reversal Sect was a demonic pit. Returning was not an option.

But he still needed demonic cultivation secret arts. He could not truly betray the sect. At the Qi Refining stage, he could see too few secrets. Only after breaking through to Foundation Establishment and making another trip to the sect’s Scripture Pavilion might he have a chance.

Time was urgent. While sneaking away into the distance, he racked his brain for a plan.

Just as Deacon Xu was about to finish the final few moves to kill the Bone Lion King, a spark of inspiration flashed through Wang Yu’s mind.

The Blood Reversal Sect ruled over four provinces, but Maple Province was the most remote. Not only was it close to the Endless Icefields, it was also near the Chaotic Ancient Sea: Northern Sea. If he truly found himself in a desperate situation, plunging into the ocean would not be a bad escape route.

On the other hand, the sect’s branch in Maple Province was far from the main authority. The highest cultivation there was only Core Formation, much weaker compared to the other three provinces.

Communication between them was also infrequent. Perhaps he could hide in Maple Province’s prefecture city. Although he was an outer sect disciple, he had a Law Enforcement Hall token, which actually carried more weight with the local branch than an inner sect disciple.

Thinking of this, Wang Yu continued fleeing at full speed while pulling out the map given to him by Gu Zhengshun. The map only marked the thousand-li area around Blackbone Mountain, but based on his route here, he could roughly deduce the location of Maple Province’s prefecture city.

Without hesitation, he sprinted toward the east-southeast. As long as he saw a large city, he would know he was right.

As for the flying artifact Black Silk, it was fine for long-distance travel, but for escape it was worse than his own running speed.

Before long, he had completely left the Blackbone Mountain area, abandoning his patrol mission entirely.

On the other side.

Panting heavily, Deacon Xu finally managed to slay the Bone Lion King after much effort, his left shoulder completely pierced through by a bone spike, bleeding profusely.

It was clear he was not the top expert of his realm.

Liu Jinxian, Situ Hong, and the others emerged from the temporary cave mansion one after another, looking at him with some uncertainty. Finally Liu Jinxian stepped forward and asked,

"I do not know which elder of the sect you are. For what matter are you seeking Junior Brother Wang Yu?"

Deacon Xu’s eyes were bloodshot. In an instant, he appeared in front of Liu Jinxian, grabbed her entirely with one hand, and clamped her throat with the tiger’s mouth of his palm. His voice was cold.

"Tell me, where is Wang Yu?!"

Madman.

Such a scene made Situ Hong and Gu Zhengshun retreat repeatedly. Truly insane — daring to treat someone surnamed Liu like this. Even if he was Foundation Establishment, he would suffer greatly.

Liu Jinxian’s mouth opened wide as she struggled to breathe. She raised a hand and pointed toward the spot where Wang Yu had previously opened his temporary cave mansion.

Deacon Xu turned his head in that direction, loosening his grip slightly. Just as he was about to press further—

An unexpected situation occurred.

Liu Jinxian kneed and elbowed, breaking free from his grasp. At the same time, her elbow struck his forearm, and a small green snake darted out from her sleeve, biting him quickly before letting go.

A flying sword shot out from her storage pouch, carrying her rapidly backward. She shouted angrily,

"Where did this madman come from, daring to act so recklessly? My father will not let you off!"

Deacon Xu froze and looked at the wound on his palm. A green line was spreading along his meridians. His expression changed drastically.

"Green Serpent Poison Thread Gu! You—"

Before he could finish, the already humiliated Liu Jinxian completely lost control. Her pride wounded, her inherently insecure temperament exploded.

She grabbed the little snake from her sleeve and crushed it.

The next moment.

Core Formation pressure descended. Behind her appeared the phantom of a giant green snake, at least a hundred meters long, with bright yellow pupils filled with fury.

"Who dares harm my beloved daughter!"

This was bad.

Deacon Xu’s heart sank. He understood her identity instantly. This technique was similar to a talisman treasure.

A Core Formation cultivator could use the power of their life-bound magic treasure as a guide, consuming the treasure’s origin to create a talisman treasure, capable of saving a descendant’s life at a critical moment.

Third-rank was the basic requirement for a talisman treasure, and it was troublesome to make. Usually, it was only done when a cultivator was near the end of their life and their descendants were lacking in strength.

Liu Jinxian’s was a Gu Dao variant of such a talisman treasure, equivalent to a full-powered strike from a Core Formation Gu cultivator.

How could Deacon Xu not be afraid?

Seeing this, Situ Hong clicked his tongue repeatedly, glad that he had not fought Liu Jinxian back in the underground palace. This kind of treasured life-saving card was given only to favored juniors. Neither he nor Gu Zhengshun would be qualified to have one.

"Die!"

The giant snake lunged toward Steward Xu. Panicked, he retreated while chopping off his right hand at the root to stop the spread of the poison from the snake bite.

This kind of child Gu, split from a Core Formation Gu cultivator’s life-bound Gu, was even more fearsome than most talisman treasures. Faced with mortal danger, he could only cut off his arm before the toxin reached his heart.

The giant snake phantom bit down, spraying venom in all directions.

Deacon Xu could only summon his pill cauldron to block, then wrapped himself in a True Essence barrier, and even brought out a mirror that added a golden layer of defense.

The pill furnace was destroyed first, corroded into scrap by the venom, which was similar in nature to the poison of the Corrosive Venomous Bees. No wonder Liu Jinxian had come to Blackbone Mountain to capture them.

Next, the True Essence barrier shattered instantly.

The third golden light mirror was pierced through by the giant snake’s fangs. The snake’s tail coiled around him, binding him completely.

A flash of green light.

Boom.

The terrifying explosion swept through everything. Liu Jinxian watched the dust cloud carefully, wary of any unexpected changes.

About five breaths later, a blackened figure dripping with green fluid shot into the distance on a cloud of black-gray yin mist — missing an arm.

"Not dead?" Liu Jinxian frowned and looked at Situ Hong and Gu Zhengshun.

"Let’s go kill him together. We split the spoils equally."

Gu Zhengshun shook his head quickly. "I’m not going."

Situ Hong said, "Me neither."

Liu Jinxian snorted. "Two useless wastes. No wonder Wang Yu could suppress you both!"

With that, she summoned the building-shaped flying artifact she had ridden in on and charged straight after Deacon Xu, her viciousness clear to see.

Ilogical for mc to give up on the mission and not wait for the resolution of the combat afterward. While mc is wise to be carefull. He can easily see this old basard acted recklesly and has no idea of the real situation. Only that he killed his daughter.

I just find it annoying that he immediatly gave up...

If he didn't act crazy and just chased Wang normally it would've been too late to run. Wang assumes his opponents aren't stupid, which is the right move.

Unorfunately his opponent did show himself to be stupid... I just hate the "life perserving" clishe these authors write their characters with. Its cringe. Its this whole philosophy full of excuses to justify mc doing certain action even if its rash, stupid or cowardly. What i hate the most is when author writes mc which he presents as brave risk taker strong in principles. Not following conventions and being flexible with rules etc. Yet having a certain moral code. Still the authors allways ends up showing the opposite extreme completly contradicting mcs personality.

Rash, brave, decisive cannot be passive, cowardly, giving up advantage/opporunity the next second. It can, but it leaves clear openings for readers to notice. Author could have written the character virtually in any way. Yet they still use this template and this reasoning which tturns out to be contradictory, hypocritical. This clearly shows a certain level of laziness from author and seperates enjoyable writing from good writing. Which in fact is seperated only by width of hair. Yet it becomes insurmountable since from original writing we got clear template for simple power fantasy.

Actually i didn t mistake this novel. Here this was one small example. Another will cardboard copy will happen few hundred chapters later. Mc will have perfect opurtunity. he will have all the means and abilities to take control of the situation and vast number of recourses. Yet author doesn t want him to. He rationalizes it as mc "having enough" allready for immidiate future and makes him retreat leaving everything to others etc. (Talking specificaly about those ancient dynasty "east" ruins before and after soul formation appears.)

I have enough experience to notice the arrival of such plot devices making the reasoning and future development from authors unseen hand not fun.
Same as here mc abadoned early being "careful". In other novels mc would
"keep low profile" and would not be proactive in saving stranger from bandit making up weak exuses and justifications even when all his current cultivation IS build on bones of others who have offered themselves to be killed? Yet now you still wait?
The hypocracy and false righteousness is flithy yet classic. Side characters misunderstanding praising mc and "guessing" mcs good, kind intentiones afterward. For example.

This leads into the whole "misunderstood comedy" which does more damage to the story instead. Recently reading "Life as rogue cultivator". First 50-100 were top tier writing. Yet quickly from extremly compelling topics charracters author dragged his story down with cheap comedy centered around mc being misunderstood as gay. I didnt mind it as much. It wasnt "completly" unreasonable as oher readors might think. Yet it still made a serious, mature story into something less so.

The same is here. Mc is carefull, author found perfect justification so how could mc come off as a looser from this? Instead of clearly showing that (in reality) by being carefull you loose opportunity and posibility that comes with risk. Instead the situation developed in mcs favor making him who acted "cowardly" the ultimate winner. The foundation building elder got chased in his direction. Suddenly our cowardly mc somehow got the guts to take advantage of the situation. Lets not forget to congratulate him afterward...

In allmost all cases there is no logical explanation or sound enough reasoning to explain mc resolute actions in either daring or laying low actions. Author just uses plot armor and moves plot in such way that makes mc come out on top. This is plain old power fantasy writing, simple dopamine game with edging... Its plainly authors unseen hand.

From start to finish i knew mc was gonna get the loot and be the ultimate winner. Not bescause it was predictable but bescause this is how xianxia authors write and how power fantasies work. One way or another once the elder started fight there it was expected mc which was saving strength would somehow come out on top. Once elder faced the girl off it was completly set in stone. At that point your just left thinking which op treasure is gonna get destroyed or storage punch destroyed scattering into void to not make mc earnings too big etc.

Dont think i didnt think this throught. Just bescause author writes smth does not make it true. Even later on i remeber mc was allready choosing to abadon sect and all the contributions, connections to go into branch. He has stealth technique yet he still escapes at full speed as if the enemy could track him over long distances.

I slightly remember mc even heard the battle happening behind him start yet he still didnt turn back to observe the situation? At this point how isnt this overally passive?
Even cowardly? He gave up on the opportunity completly. The fact that he later got rewarded for it does not make it calculated etc. It only means he got lucky. Plain old plot armor even if here its actually reasoned well enough for it to not be glaring.

What i have problem with, is only the way mcs reasoning was sold. Still this novel isnt that bad. Yeah clishe tropes but the writing isnt bad. The characters are fun. Later on the war has many plot holes thought etc. At least the battles were fun. Even if the cultivation techniques themselves were all plain and boring. Author had zero imagination coming up with the system here. Very bland.

So lets make things clear. For normie reader my frustration may come off wrongly. I dont mind mc running off. I just allready knew the the reasoning was not strong and that there would be more to it. Author moving the plot in certain direction.

I cleanly expressed these facts which are all true:
        1. the reasoning is weak
        2.the outcome rewards passivity
        3. author retroactively rewarding cowardince as wisdom

This is clear pattern in these novels and im not wrong for spotting it. Still im happy for comment instead of simple dislike which would just show shallow reading comprhension.

Once again author engineers outcomes that reward passivity which he later on or even during reframes as wisdom courage or principle which however contradict MC stated characteristics and traits. (Weve all seen this in xianxia novels... Cn can have completly bland mc with these principles/morals being their whole personality. Yet these are troopes. New readers just havent read enough to see it)

You may still think that im still just hating? My answer is im not!

Caution can still be inteligent even if rewarded. That would be your point and that im just nitpicking trolling.
I would of course agree to a certain extent. BUT!!

        *Inteligence requires information managment
*Mc did not observe, reassess find a nearby vantage point
*Mc completly disengaged until luck intervened

So yeah this defense of this situation being reasonable/well written collapses unless the the text = author shows deliberate probabilistic reasoning. This unfortunately did not happen.
