Chapter 11: Log

The conference room door closed once again.

Ji Yongsheng asked, "General Manager Meng, Director Mu, have you two remembered anything now?"

Mu Wei shook his head. "Really, no."

Meng Haolin said, "President Ji, I truly don't understand why you suspect the CMS is faulty. Just show me that evidence already."

"No need to rush. We'll all look at it together in a moment." Ji Yongsheng smiled slightly. "Many in the industry praise us, saying Zhiwei Technology is a company with warmth. Regarding employee care, especially for veteran employees who have contributed to the company, I believe we are indeed commendable. But if someone doesn't appreciate it, then the company can't be blamed, right?"

As he spoke, he picked up a remote control beside him and pressed a button on it.

Wei Hongsi heard a faint mechanical whirring sound from beneath the tabletop, and immediately saw a strip-shaped panel on the table flip open. A liquid crystal screen extended from within, flashing with the Zhiwei Technology logo.

Not long after, the logo disappeared, and the screen lit up, displaying several documents.

Ji Yongsheng's voice continued, "This is the CMS system log from the past month. Everyone can browse it freely. It's exactly as Director Mu said—there are no issues. However, please pay attention to the content from the early morning of May 25th.

"The log shows that between 2 AM and 4 AM, scheduled routine system maintenance was performed as planned. Maintenance was completed at 3:42 AM, the CMS was restarted, and the restart finished at 3:58 AM. Subsequently, a stress test was conducted at 4:12 AM, followed by another restart at 4:48 AM.

"Now, let me show you something else. This is a penalty invoice issued to us by the power company last month. The reason was that the power factor plummeted from 0.93 to 0.68, and our midnight power consumption exceeded three times the daytime usage. In the Finance Department's records, this penalty is logged as 'CMS stress test,' and the timeline does indeed match perfectly.

"As you all know, to ensure the CMS's stable operation, we upgraded its dedicated power station again at the beginning of the year. But what many don't know is that when upgrading the power station, Department Fifteen also added a substation log for it.

"According to this log's records, between 3:40 AM and 5:00 AM on May 25th, the reactive power compensation device continuously issued over-frequency alarms. I carefully checked the relevant data. During this period, the instantaneous power consumption peak reached 17 megawatts, occurring at 4:04 AM.

"Let's cross-reference this with the CMS system log again. At this time, the CMS had already completed its restart but had not yet started the stress test. It should have been the period of lowest energy consumption."

Having said this, Ji Yongsheng shifted his gaze from the screen in front of him to look at everyone present. "Everyone, I think I've made it quite clear. Any further questions?"

Beads of sweat covered Mu Wei's forehead. After careful deliberation, he looked up and said, "President Ji, I admit to modifying the log and am willing to bear the corresponding responsibility."

Ji Yongsheng snorted, looking at him. "Then let me ask you, how did you erase the physical residual data from the log storage block?"

"I..." Mu Wei opened his mouth but finally hung his head.

Meng Haolin sighed and said slowly, "I used a backdoor command to perform an overwrite. I was responsible for the storage block at the time."

Faced with the ironclad evidence presented by Ji Yongsheng, the two could no longer deny it.

Ji Yongsheng asked, "General Manager Meng, did you ever tell anyone else about the backdoor command set for the log storage block?"

"Absolutely not," Meng Haolin hastily denied. "Even Wenhui doesn't know. How could I tell anyone else?"

Ji Yongsheng stared at Meng Haolin. "General Manager Meng, why don't you have another cup of tea and think it over carefully?"

"That won't be necessary." Meng Haolin instinctively refused. Meeting Ji Yongsheng's sharp gaze, he suddenly realized something and said in a trembling voice, "President Ji, no... it can't be that..."

At that moment, Ji Yongsheng heard a very soft sigh from his side and rear. He stopped the words about to leave his mouth, remained silent for a moment, and then asked, "General Manager Meng, do you know who the client is that issued these two commissions to Department Eight?"

"No idea." Meng Haolin shook his head. "Our Technology Development Center and the Application Center don't have much work overlap. It's even less likely we'd know about their clients."

Ji Yongsheng said, "That client is Paradise Beverages."

"Oh." Meng Haolin nodded. "A large enterprise."

Ji Yongsheng couldn't help but sigh. Meng Haolin's age seemed to be truly showing.

As the General Manager of the Technology Development Center, to say he has little intersection with the Application Center is as laughable as a chef saying he has no connection at all with the diners. Simply holding this belief makes him unsuitable for this position.

He no longer looked at Meng Haolin and began operating the conference terminal.

"These are the reports we produced for the two Paradise Beverages commissions. The first one was delivered yesterday. Director Yu deemed the second one problematic and hasn't approved it yet. Attached after the first report is the conclusion from the company's standard analysis model. Everyone can compare them.

"This final document is the report President Gu gave me. General Manager Meng, take a good look. If you have any questions, you can raise them."

The screen in front of Wei Hongsi displayed those files. The first two reports were his own—nothing new to see. Gu Shiming's report was his main focus.

In just a few pages, it clearly dissected the relationship between the CMS and the standard algorithm model.

For example, the company's eye-tracking analysis standard model is equivalent to an interview examiner. An advertising proposal is equivalent to a candidate, and the advertising proposal's test data is the candidate's exam paper.

Since the candidates don't know the content of the interview questions nor understand the examiner's grading criteria, their scores generally range between 50 and 60 points. Scoring above 62 points already makes one a top performer.

But there was one candidate called Plan B who scored over 70 points.

The exam organizers found this score somewhat outrageous, so they changed the examiner for everyone. As a result, other candidates' scores were similar to before, but Candidate B got a big fat zero.

Such a huge score discrepancy triggered an investigation by the exam organizers.

They then discovered that in the exam where Candidate B received the high score, there were very obvious signs of score manipulation. This indicated that Candidate B had a thorough understanding of the previous examiner's grading criteria.

Another piece of evidence showed that Candidate B had been coached by a teacher named CMS, who taught Candidate B all the previous examiner's grading criteria.

Both the examiner and the teacher are unique entities. Therefore, the conclusion is that the CMS teacher completely replicated the brain of the previous examiner.

That's roughly the situation.

Ji Yongsheng waited quietly for a moment, then said, "If everyone has no questions about President Gu's report, let's extrapolate the situation after Plan B's deployment. Engineer Wei, please introduce your predictions regarding the changes in the purchasing psychology of Plan B's test subjects."

In more technical terms, it's a case of overfitting. If it was a model of course.
