Chapter 99: Cody’s Death

Cody’s actions inevitably drew a lot of attention.

However, his earlier maneuvering had secured him a favorable position.

When he broke out, many enemies had their backs to him, with no cover in between.

Seizing this opportunity, Cody and his subordinates unleashed a barrage of fire, killing many enemies.

Among them were even two warlocks.

One was caught off guard, with his storm shield not adjusted in time, and was shot dead by multiple bullets.

The other managed to react but was overwhelmed by concentrated fire.

In a matter of seconds, several soldiers emptied their magazines, shattering the warlock’s storm shield and killing him.

Low-level warlocks, lacking sufficient power, could have their shields broken and be killed by ordinary bullets.

But soon, as the enemy realized what was happening, things got tougher for Cody’s team.

Especially during this flanking assault, though they had eliminated many enemies, their weapons ran out of ammunition.

While some soldiers ensured their magazines still had firepower, others inevitably created a gap in firepower while reloading.

Bullets flew their way, and a wind bullet from a warlock struck them.

One soldier was hit in the leg, fell to the ground, and was soon riddled with bullets, ending his life.

The wind bullet, slightly off target, exploded at the edge of the group but still claimed the lives of two soldiers.

Despite Cody’s efforts to lead his team to cover, only four men remained by his side.

This was expected, and Cody remained calm.

While the front-line firepower drew the enemy’s attention, he and his team attacked from the flank, aiming to create as much damage as possible while still drawing attention.

Next, it was up to Tadius.

He led another team, and by now, they should be launching their attack.

The number of warlocks among the enemy had been reduced to three.

If Tadius could achieve similar results, the battle would be manageable.

Ideally, they could preserve their strength and maintain their combat capability.

If he and Tadius could lead eight or nine men like steel nails into the enemy’s rear, and the front-line troops launched an assault under fire cover, they could overcome the odds, reclaiming the grain trucks from the cultists and mobsters!

As he was thinking this, he heard gunfire and screams from a distance.

Tadius launched his attack as planned!

But the next moment, Cody furrowed his brow tightly.

The sounds didn’t seem quite right.

They were somewhat distant.

Unable to resist, he glanced over and saw that the situation was not looking good.

Tadius seemed to have been exposed before launching his attack and was now under enemy fire, struggling to respond.

Cody realized he couldn’t wait for results.

He looked at the four soldiers beside him.

Their expressions were tense.

Although they were the best and most steadfast soldiers he had chosen, they were now deep in enemy territory, surrounded by foes.

Half of their team had just been killed, and their morale was understandably shaken.

Cody knew he had to say something: “We’ve come this far; we must disregard life and death. Do we have any room to retreat now? Victory is our only option!”

“Let’s go! Eliminate the remaining warlocks, and victory will be ours!”

With that, he dashed out of cover.

The four soldiers, whether moved by his words or driven by instinct, followed closely behind.

One soldier stayed back, providing covering fire and targeting enemies trying to attack his comrades.

The other three, led by Cody, charged at the warlocks who were facing Tadius.

The warlock was instantly trapped; enemies were in front and behind him, and he couldn’t move to the side without exposing himself to direct fire.

Caught off guard, he was shot dead.

But the remaining two warlocks were a tougher challenge.

The two stood back-to-back behind a pile of collapsed and ruined buildings.

The debris acted as cover, blocking frontal fire.

Both Tadius’s and Cody’s teams could only attack the warlocks facing them, and the warlocks’ storm shields were directed at them.

Complicating matters, a significant number of armed mobsters were guarding the two warlocks. Their firepower was primarily directed at Tadius’s side, pinning down the commissar and preventing him from advancing.

Quickly assessing the situation, Cody did two things.

He pulled the pin of a grenade and threw it at the enemy.

The exploding grenade killed several armed mobsters and caused the storm shields of the two warlocks to flicker.

Immediately after, he anticipated the enemy’s counterattack and dodged to the side, successfully avoiding a wind bullet.

The wind bullet blasted the two soldiers beside him away.

Half-crawling and half-crouching on the ground, Cody endured the pain of having a piece of skin torn off his face by a wind blade. In an awkward position, he fiercely fired at the warlock facing him.

The storm shield, already shaken by the grenade, flickered under the fierce shooting of the G9 rifle, clearly on the verge of breaking.

The warlock, along with several surviving armed mobsters, was entirely focused on this black-coat, red-hat man.

Bullets forced Cody to dodge.

He was hit several times in the torso, but the plastic steel vest he wore under his coat protected his vital organs. Shoulder hits, leg wounds, and losing an ear were minor issues.

The firepower he drew allowed the remaining two soldiers to seize the opportunity.

Both soldiers emptied their new magazines at the warlock. Even if only half the bullets hit, it was enough to break the storm shield.

The soldier farther away, after emptying his magazine, tried to duck back to reload but was shot in the head and killed instantly.

The nearer and last soldier dropped his rifle and threw a grenade.

But the grenade was blown away by an evil wind.

The warlock, whose shield had just broken, was terrified.

He had been distracted by the red hat and almost taken out.

His storm shield needed time to reboot, and if the grenade had landed, he would have been done for.

Desperate, he summoned another wind bullet and hurled it at the soldier trying to reload, blasting his body like a rag doll and finally feeling some relief.

With that threat eliminated, he could now turn his attention to the barely alive red hat.

Huh?

Where was the red hat?

Looking up, he saw the red hat, dragging a wounded leg, climbing onto the ruins of a nearby building used as cover and leaping down.

Two grenades, their pins pulled, were strapped to his body.

The warlock’s eyes widened, but it was too late to do anything.

With a thunderous explosion, the blast and shrapnel from the two grenades killed the warlock with the broken shield and the warlock facing Tadius’s team.

It also took Cody’s life.
