Chapter 34

Warg

The stinky werewolf bastard opened his mouth.

“I asked you first, Human. The Maya you were talking about, is that the Sorcerer…?”

There was no need to listen anymore. Kim Bongpal stood from his seat and faced the werewolf. His face was contorted into a grimace.

“Doggy, I’m not very patient. Answer quickly, you fucking bastard.”

He spat out the words. However, werewolves weren’t inferior to any other species regarding their wild nature. The werewolf shouted.

“Arrogant human! I tried to hold back because you seemed to be an acquaintance of my Maya!”

His words keep getting longer. Kim Bongpal tried to follow one lesson from his long experience: anyone would eventually answer if he beat them, no matter what kind of bastard they were.

Dash-!

Even before the Werewolf finished, Kim Bongpal stepped forward. He used the Bow Shooting Shadow technique he recently learned.

“How dare you!”

The werewolf quickly reacted, befitting a master at their peak. He wasn’t an easy opponent to deal with.

Swoosh-!

The werewolf boosted his mana at Kim Bongpal’s charge. His unique mana as an Inhuman, the mana he inherited from his father’s blood, could intimidate his foe just by revealing it. However, the werewolf’s plan wouldn’t work on this foe.

Kim Bongpal hadn’t drawn his sword. There was something he had to hear from his opponent, so he rushed in with mana focused on his fist. His answer was to beat any bastard who didn’t listen.

The mana contained in Kim Bongpal’s fist, in terms of the amount, seemed inferior to the werewolf’s. But considering its density…

Bang!

It was no wonder that the moment it hit the werewolf’s abdomen, not only the ship they were in but the surrounding lake shook.

“Gaargh!”

The werewolf gasped. He was prepared for the blow, but it arrived faster than he expected. The sudden shock caused the werewolf to bow his head.

But no matter how great the pain, he had to somehow get hold of himself and prepare for the next move. Or he could step back right away and prepare to beastify.

Bang!

Werewolves were the strongest among the Werebeasts, even if they didn’t beastify. Their bodies were incomparable to that of an ordinary human. Besides, the level of martial arts he had learned could match a master, so Warg, the son of Wargen, had skin as strong as steel.

But now, his strength was no use in front of Kim Bongpal.

“Gasp!”

A strange sound escaped the werewolf’s mouth. This time, the blow hit his ribs. It hurt. It was the first pain of its kind that Warg had felt in a long time.

When was the last time he felt this way? Was it five years ago? When he reached his peak, the very first time he faced his father. It was a fight between parent and child, but that day was a life-and-death decision for Warg. It must have been the last day he was beaten like a dog by his father.

Why did he remember that day now?

“———!”

This time, he blocked Kim Bongpal’s fist. And then, only by concentrating mana into both his arms to stop it. However, the shock still pierced his mana shield and reached his insides.

It was so painful that he couldn’t even groan. Warg’s balance started to collapse. He pulled a foot back to steady himself, but Kim Bongpal was ready for him.

Crack-!

When Kim Bongpal kicked Warg’s left thigh, there was a loud popping sound. His werewolf’s skin, which was actually famous for being as hard as most monsters’ hide, burst. Warg couldn’t keep his balance and had no choice but to kneel.

“Fuck. I like the eye level now.”

A werewolf became a monster nearly 3m tall after beastification, but even before that, they were taller than ordinary humans. Warg was one of those werewolves who boasted an exceptionally large body, standing about 2m 20cm tall in his human form. But kneeling down, his head was just the right height to grab.

Kim Bongpal tangled a hand into Warg’s mane-like hair.

“Kugh!”

Warg felt his face tighten. Pain, anger, and the sheer absurdity of the situation warred inside him.

‘Am I being held down by a human right now?’

“I’ll ask you one last time. Where the hell did you get that?”

…However, the anger quickly disappeared. The pain and absurdity remained, but other emotions quickly eroded his anger. Fear is the strongest of them. The fear that this unknown opponent might hit him again.

That’s right. Now Warg was terrified by Kim Bongpal.

* * *

“…I do not know.”

Kim Bongpal stared at Warg as he answered. At the same time, he gathered mana in his fist. Noticing the veins bulging up his forearm, Warg hurriedly spoke.

“I-it’s true! One of my father’s bodyguards was wearing it, so I took it because it looked cool! That’s it! Really!”

From how he waved his hands after looking at Kim Bongpal’s fist, it seemed that Kim Bongpal’s experience was again correct. In the end, whoever they were, they would answer after he beat them up. However, despite Warg’s subservient attitude, Kim Bongpal didn’t relax.

“Hey, how old are you?”

“I don’t know why you ask, but this year, I am forty-nine….”

Kim Bongpal let go of his hair and raised his other hand.

 Clank!

He smacked Warg’s head with the side of his fist. Something similar to the sound of metal clanging rang out.

“You cheeky bastard. How dare a young bastard like you speak casually like that to me?”

“Ugh!”

Warg bit his tongue because he was hit while talking. Of course, the werewolf’s strong vitality quickly regenerated the minor wound.

Warg, swallowing the taste of iron lingering on the tip of his tongue, carefully asked.

“…Sir, were you blessed with Half-Turn Aging by any chance?”

Clank!

But without a reply, Warg was hit again.

“Where did this bastard learn how to ask questions instead of answering?”

“…”

‘Fuck! You didn’t even ask me a question! I answered them all!’

Warg thought so but couldn’t bring himself to say it aloud. His opponent’s fist made him dizzy every time it hit. What kind of fist gave such a shock even though it was swung without any mana? It felt like his brain was shaking.

Still, Warg was quick-witted.

“I-if you want, I can call that bodyguard and confront him about it.”

While werewolves usually took human forms, their wildness surpassed reason. Therefore, they thoroughly followed the laws of the wild. Survival of the fittest. It wasn’t for nothing that Wargen’s pack had settled in the territory of the Evil Alliance.

Anyway, that’s why Warg didn’t feel any shame in showing such a servile appearance to a stronger opponent.

“Shall I call him now? I’ll call him and ask where he got this bracelet! Just tell me!”

No, maybe it felt a little…

“Let’s do that later. What’s your name?

“My name is Warg!”

“Warg? Okay? Hey, Tearing Mind! Come over here and have a look.”

Kim Bongpal called the Tearing Wind Sword, who was hunkered down on the other side.

“…It is Tearing Wind Sword.”

“Yeah. Tearing Mind.”

He timidly protested against Kim Bongpal, who still couldn’t get his name right. Of course, Kim Bongpal knew it was Tearing Wind, but he found Tearing Mind easier to pronounce.

“Anyway, I’m going to ask this bastard something, but if there’s anything I get wrong, you tell me.”

“Okay.”

Tearing Wind Sword glanced at Warg while replying to Kim Bongpal. He couldn’t believe he was seeing Warg, the son of Wargen, like this here in the Purple Clouds. But it was a drop in the bucket of the many shock sights he’d seen the last two weeks.

“Good, all right. Then Warg? I’m going to ask you some questions. If I get an answer I don’t like, I will hit you just like before. Got it?”

“…Yes?”

He would hit him not if he didn’t answer but if he didn’t like the answer. What the hell was that…?

“Don’t you understand?”

“I understand!”

…Warg answered Kim Bongpal’s question without hesitation. At the same time, he made a face that looked as harmless as possible to Kim Bongpal.

“Okay. I hear you are well. First of all, that bodyguard. Can you call him now?”

“Yes! I need to contact him, and he will pop right out!”

With those words, Warg pulled a magic tool from his pocket. Tearing Wind Sword, watching the exchange, showed Kim Bongpal that it was a magic tool for long-distance communication.

“Yeah. Then call him right away. Ah! If you felt it was unfair that I hit you, you also can call more of your friends. It’s annoying if you come back later, so if you’re going to call them, just call them right now.”

“Oh, no! That won’t happen!”

“It’s true. Although the Werewolves live in packs, each has a strong sense of independence. Nothing will happen if he doesn’t die.”

“Is that so? I like it.”

“That’s right! There’s no way my father or friends will seek revenge just because I’ve been beaten!”

If he called the other werewolves because he was hit a few times, Warg, the next successor to the pack, would be treated as a lesser werewolf. That was many times more terrible for Warg than the pain he suffered from being beaten by Kim Bongpal.

Therefore, Warg only called his bodyguard. He was planning to call in the bodyguard, confront him, and…escape from this place. And as a bonus, he was going to torture the bodyguard who gave him this damn thing—or, to be more precise, whom he took the smartwatch away from.

“And what did you say about Maya? Do you know Maya?

“…Yes. I saw her a few times when I was a kid.”

“Hmm. Really? She used to live in Purple Clouds, so I guess she knows some werewolves. She’s the Maya you’re talking about, right? A 300-year-old supernatural being who calls herself an Arch Sorcerer?”

“Yes! That’s right!”

Maya was a Sorcerer, still only a wolf cub, but he remembered her well. Warg’s first love was Maya. So when he heard Maya’s name, he looked for the boat where Kim Bongpal was.

Warg looked into Kim Bongpal’s eyes. In his view, this tremendous opponent was quite close to Maya. So Warg tried to loosen up his opponent’s ominous mood by referring to the old image of Maya he remembered.

“I can still remember Lady Maya’s appearance. Her flower-like beauty and mature charm….”

Clank-!

“Kurgh!”

Warg bit his tongue again, tasting the iron stronger than before. Kim Bongpal had hit him.

“What? Flower-like beauty? Mature charm? How dare this bastard lie?”

‘No, why did he hit me?!’

This time Warg felt it was really unfair.

    Chapter 35

    Shadowless Squad

Kim Bongpal and Warg’s conversation ended as the werewolf did everything he could to convince the belligerent man about Maya’s former appearance. Meanwhile, Kim Bongpal asked after everything he was curious about, and now all that was left was to wait for the bodyguard.

“Oh, it’s delicious. It is from Moorim, right? What’s the name?”

    “This is Golden Honor.”

“Hmm. I like it. Hey, Warg? Have a drink, too.”

    “Y-yes!”

Kim Bongpal enjoyed some long-awaited entertainment while they waited. They ordered Moorim dishes and drinks, and occasionally mixed in foods from Lupaine. It wasn’t as fun as in El Plades, but the Shire-style nightlife had its own taste. The music was pretty good, too.

The waiters at the pub who witnessed the scene of Warg, the son of Wargen, being beaten like a dog did their best to serve Kim Bongpal.

    “Hey…brother.”

    “Yeah?”

One funny thing was that at some point, Warg started to call Kim Bongpal brother, and Kim Bongpal didn’t say anything about it. It felt unfamiliar since there weren’t many people who called him that, but it called to mind a few old memories.

    “It’s about hitting me earlier.

“Huh. Why? Are you upset because I hit you?”

“No! It’s not like that…d-did you use a particular trick when you hit me earlier? I tried to block your attack by focusing on the right area, but it still got through.”

“That? It’s…what is it? Hey, Tearing Mind. It’s the Beyond Mountain Punch, right?

    “Yes…that’s right.”

Tearing Wind Sword answered Kim Bongpal’s question with a tremble in his voice. He couldn’t believe that this genius used the technique without properly knowing the name. He shouted in his heart.

    ‘…Whatever!’

Tearing Wind Sword downed another drink with a bitter smile. And then.

    “Warg!”

    A new werewolf arrived.

    “Why did you call me?”

There was no fixed hierarchy in a werewolf pack except for the pack’s leader. Otherwise, matters were determined by strength. Of course, showing respect to old wolves who have contributed to the pack for a long time was common, but no such respect existed for others of a similar age.

Therefore, Wargen’s bodyguard had no need to show respect to Warg.

“And you’re even with human males. Have you grown interested in men?”

This newcomer looked around and asked Warg. He completely ignored Kim Bongpal and Tearing Wind Seat.

Seeing this display, Tearing Wind Sword shook his head, and Warg smiled a little, revealing his teeth. It was because he imagined what would happen to this bodyguard who had caused him pain by giving him the bracelet — again, the bracelet he stole.

    And as Warg expected.

    “Ugh! Gaargh!”

The sound of slaughter echoed through the pub.

    * * *

The bodyguard became polite like Warg in a matter of moments.

“Tsk. So, you got it from a monster’s belly?”

“Yes! I’m telling you the truth! Please trust me!”

Kim Bongpal nodded. It didn’t seem like the Werewolf was lying, and there was no reason for him. Anyway, this wasn’t as helpful as he had hoped.

A monster’s belly, huh? Maybe it was eaten by that monster or something. After all, smartwatches, especially the hunter’s smartwatches, weren’t made of materials that a monster’s stomach juices could digest.

    “Give it to me.”

Kim Bongpal took the smartwatch from Warg and looked at it. It was locked, but there was a way to unlock it.

    Click-click-click.

Kim Bongpal searched his old memories and entered the code. It was a code that all Hunters should know, one that hadn’t changed in several decades. Usually, hunters shared a common code to open their watches before death. That was the only time they would ever take it off.

    “Oh, ooh!”

    “Was it a magic tool?”

The werewolves were amazed by the hologram that floated above the watch. It only changed the color a little when they touched it, so it was surprising that Kim Bongpal knew how to work it. However, he didn’t respond and looked at the device.

It wasn’t Seo Hayeon’s. Still, its original owner seemed to belong to her raid squad. She is featured in a few group photos stored on the album, and it was odd how unfamiliar her face looked in them…

“Ha. I thought she would always be a silly kid….”

She wore an expression not very familiar to Kim Bongpal. Come to think of it, what he remembered of Seo Hayeon was from six years ago. It might be a short time for him, but not so for most people.

Looking at her face in the photo, Kim Bongpal thought: the kid has become a decent adult.

Kim Bongpal kept flipping through the photos, but no more showed her.

    Fu#k.”

Kim Bongpal quietly cursed. The werewolves flinched in surprise, but his gaze was fixed on the smartwatch.

    Sizzle-

Kim Bongpal took a cigarette out, lit it, and took a long drag. After several months in the Shire, only a few were left.

The owner of the smartwatch was a young woman. She looked to be in her early twenties at the latest, about the same age as Seo Hayeon when they’d parted. Kim Bongpal didn’t feel very good about it.

That felt weird. He had witnessed the death of other hunters countless times. When he factored in the normal people he saw die during the Outbreak, there was no point in counting. Some of them were even younger than this smartwatch’s owner.

None of them had bothered him back then.

    “…”

It was then that Kim Bongpal realized that he had changed a little bit. Come to think of it, it was funny that he only realized it now. Why was he coming to Purple Clouds? Seo Hayeon. It was to find her. Then, why was he looking for her? Twenty billion?

That wasn’t the reason. It was a lot of money for most people, but not him. The fact that Seo Hayeon owed him that much was just a joke.

It had been a long time since Seo Kang Jun called him a brother for the last time.

    “Right. Fu#k it.”

What was wrong with an uncle going to find his niece? Kim Bongpal cleared those feelings with a curse and suddenly felt ridiculous about being at this place.

    He stood.

“You guys play more. I’m leaving now.”

    “Where are you going?”

Tearing Wind Sword asked as Kim Bongpal stalked away.

    “…”

There was only one day left until the date Young-no promised. What should he do until then?

Kim Bongpal took a moment to choose an answer.

    “Extensive training.”

Where the two humans sat at first, only one human and two werewolves remained.

      “…”

      “…”

The three of them didn’t speak to each other.

“…But who the hell is that human?”

It was the werewolf bodyguard who came later that broke the silence.

“I don’t know, you bastard. You get off easy, and I don’t want to see you.”

Warg, glancing at him, growled. The bodyguard looked offended. No, he was called over and beaten by someone he didn’t know. But he had no choice but to cringe in front of a powerful man.

      “You f#cking bastard!”

The werewolf left with a curse that he wasn’t sure was for. There were two left now.

Warg’s gaze turned to Tearing Wind Sword. This human was weaker than him, so Warg could roughly estimate his level with a glance. This man was a master below him, much less Kim Bongpal.

Werewolves were a race that showed great respect to those stronger than themselves, as Warg did to Kim Bongpal. But otherwise, they showed the opposite. Warg scanned Tearing Wind Sword up and down again and concluded that he did not need to worry about him. Eventually, he also left.

      “Whew.”

Tearing Wind Sword let out a big sigh. It was a busy day when many things happened to him. From the fact that Kim Bongpal stole the essence of the Eight Directions Sword Technique to see Wargen’s son being beaten in the city of Purple Clouds. Besides, he didn’t expect that he could drink luxurious liquor in a fine pub he had never been to before.

Tearing Wind Sword, rising from his seat, also headed outside. But then.

      “Huh? Where are you going?”

A waiter at the pub stopped him. For a moment, it made Tearing Wind Sword think, ‘No way.’ He wondered if they always grabbed people like that here.

“You have to pay before you go. It’s 5 million M in total.”

      “Yes? What do you mean?”

“Lord Warg told me to get the rest from the person who remained here.”

Tearing Wind Sword looked blank for a moment; his expression grew bewildered.

      “H-how much did you say?”

“Yes, three bottles of Golden Honor, three bottles of Red Lady, and the dishes were originally 5.1 million M, but after taking it off, the total came out to be 5 million M.”

What? How much? Tearing Wind Sword’s mouth fell open wide.

      “…”

He looked around. Kim Bongpal, who brought him here to treat him, was nowhere to be seen. Warg and the werewolf also left.

“…Please wrap up the rest of the drink and food.”

The petit bourgeois Tearing Wind Sword.

      * * *

      Another day passed.

      “Sister! I’m here!”

Kim Bongpal and Maya visited the Frail Night Sect again.

      “…Oh my? Something has changed.”

Young-no said so as soon as she saw Kim Bongpal. Over the past 15 days, his energy had changed. His ability to control mana was already excellent, and Young-no knew he was one of the top masters just by looking at him. However, there was an immaturity that could not be hidden.

No, it was more like clumsiness than immaturity…a sense of mana control that somehow smelled old-fashioned.

However, it had changed so much that it was almost perfect now. The former appearance he showed almost seemed unsightly in comparison. Those were the results of his two weeks under Tearing Wind Sword’s tutelage and his practice alone last night.

      “Right? I was surprised, too!”

Maya said so, pushing her chest forward. It was as if she’d been complimented.

Young-no smiled at her and handed over the prepared snacks. Meanwhile, Kim Bongpal nodded as if it was no big deal.

“Have you collected all the information I requested?”

      “Uhm. About half.”

      “Half of it?”

Young-no took out a piece of paper and said:

“We have found out the whereabouts of the Otherworlder and what they are doing right now. Most became new members of the Celestial Demon Cult, and the few who refused are still in prison. However, the woman you mentioned last time….”

“You made me wait for fifteen days and couldn’t find where she was? Is that what you’re going to say?”

“No. It’s not like that. We found her whereabouts. However, we just couldn’t contact her…she’s in the Celestial Demon’s abode, and we can’t get in and out of there.”

Kim Bongpal’s eyebrows twitched. He now knew the story of the Celestial Demon, that she was a female half-elf and the first to not also be a Cult Leader. And Seo Hayeon was now in her abode. That wasn’t good news.

He inevitably had to face the Celestial Demon to find Seo Hayeon.

“I’m sorry. I can’t believe we gave you such incomplete information after saying that we wouldn’t accept payment….”

      Young-no said, lowering her head.

“Instead, we have prepared a few more details you might like.”

Kim Bongpal received the paper handed by Young-no and looked at the contents. As Young-no said, it was a lot of helpful information for him. Maps, organizational charts, boundary situations…

…And the location of the Shadowless Squad, the raiding party of the Celestial Demon Sect kidnapped the Earthlings.

“Ha. So, they are coming here now?”

“That’s right. Considering the location confirmed yesterday and the movement speed of the Shadowless Squad, I think they will probably reach Purple Clouds within a few hours.”

Kim Bongpal didn’t think for long. She said they would arrive in Purple Clouds in a few hours, but…

‘I don’t have to sit down and wait for them.’

“Good. I’ll come back later and read the rest.”

With those words, Kim Bongpal stood up.

      “Huh? Let’s go together!”

According to Warg, the beautiful and mature (?) Maya followed behind him…with crumbs on her lips.
