Chapter 3586: Late to the Party (part 1)

"Ishil was supposed to travel to Gabash on the day Acala broke Dawn free." Nalrond said. "She wanted to buy a white fabric roll for her wedding dress and a few decorations for our future home."

"So she might have survived as well." Friya pointed out.

"Unlikely." He replied. "Ishil said she would leave after lunch. She first wanted to discuss the final details of our ceremony with my mother and was waiting for her to return from her patrol.

"Dawn escaped at noon, when the sun was at its highest and my mother still on her way back. I believe Ishil is dead. Otherwise, I would have met her in Gabash. I reached the village just hours after the attack.

"You have no idea how slow she was when shopping. We only had the money we made as healers and she thought thrice before spending a single copper coin. Her constant back and forth before picking a gods-damn doily drove me crazy every time we went to the market together." A sad smile formed on his face, making Friya's heart tighten.

She could hear the nostalgia in his voice and see the love in his eyes.

No matter how many times she heard him speak Ishil's name, it always held so much affection that it made Friya feel like a consolation prize. It lasted just one second, and she could never tell whether Nalrond still had feelings for Ishil or if it was all in Friya's head, yet it hurt just the same.

"What if the Rezar they spotted is Ishil?" It was the worst possible moment to ask that question yet she couldn't help herself. "What if she survived? What about us?"

"I don't think it's her." Nalrond said with cold finality. "She was likely still in my village when Dawn attacked. My father probably charged into battle like a bull to defend our people and my mother rushed back the moment she saw smoke rising on the horizon.

"My hope to find any of them alive is just that. Hope. I didn't count the corpses but there were plenty near my house and Ishil's. I'm sure they are dead. I can feel it in my heart."

"You still haven't answered my question." Friya didn't let him avoid the subject. "What if you are wrong? What if one or more of them survived?"

"If my father or mother are alive, I'll probably cry." Nalrond walked in front of Friya and took her hands into his. "Then, I'll ask them where they have been all this time, and after kicking their asses I'll invite them to our wedding. I hope an extra guest isn't a burden."

"Don't be silly." She caressed his fingers with her thumbs. "I would love to meet my in-laws and they would be welcome to move in near us and attend the wedding. They are family."

"Near us? Not with us?" Nalrond echoed, chuckling.

"No newlywed wants to live with their in-laws." Friya blushed a bit. "I didn't escape my parents' clutches just to fall into your parents'. I want us to enjoy our life together before adding permanent guests to our home."

"Agreed." Nalrond nodded.

"What about Ishil?" Friya pressed on.

"If she's alive, I'll probably cry no less than for my parents." His reply made Friya swallow hard. "Then I'd ask her if there's something I can help her with and wish her a happy life.

"We've been distant for too long and I've moved on. I've stopped wondering about what might have been between her and me. I look forward to our future together, Friya. I'm done mourning Ishil and, if she's alive, I bet she has done the same and started a new life.

"We are not the same people we were back then and there's no going back. Whoever this mysterious Rezar is, assuming it's even a Rezar, I want to help them. I need to make sure I'm not the last of my species. Even if it turns out to be someone I despised."

"Can I come with you?" Friya asked, wringing her hands.

"You must come with me." He chuckled. "I don't trust myself or my poker face if we get there too late and the Rezar has already been captured. I need you to keep me grounded."

"Thank you." She gave him a dazzling smile. "We can't go alone. Neither of us has reached the bright violet core and a single Council Elder would wipe the ground with our corpses. We need a heavyweight."

"Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" Nalrond asked.

"You bet I do." Friya replied.

***

"I can't fight the entire Council alone and I'm too deep in my experiments to take such a long break." Faluel and most of the Hydra bloodline were working on awakening their dormant mana organs.

"No way." Faluel replied. "I can't come with you. I'm a Council Elder as well and there's not much I can do. I can solve a quarrel with a Spirit Duel, but that would sour my relationship with the other elders.

"Once you find the Rezar, if even it's a Rezar, you need to get away fast. If someone sees you with the Rezar, they won't believe you are protecting the Rezar but that you want to keep their knowledge all for yourself.

"I can't fight the entire Council alone and I'm too deep in my experiments to take such a long break." Faluel and most of the Hydra bloodline were working on awakening their dormant mana organs.

Baba Yaga had shown them that it was possible and all Dragons were supposed to have Origin Flames and Dragon Eyes. Just those two bloodline abilities were enough to make the Hydras the most powerful species among the Lesser Dragons.

Baba Yaga had outlined the necessary mana organs in Ufyl's life force and Faluel had found them in her life force as well. Yet even with the help of her mother and the Hands of Menadion, she was still at square one.

"On top of that, I have no authority in the Silvar region. The local rulers outrank me and the local authorities would ignore me. You need someone who can pull rank and help you bring your Rezar friend away with untraceable means."

"Lith." Friya and Nalrond groaned in unison.

"Menadion can distract the Elders until the end of times, his tower can move between continents in a moment, and his Supreme Magus status can open him doors even Awakened struggle with." Faluel nodded.

"Also, his reputation is much worse than mine. If he threatens someone, you can be certain they'll believe him."

"I would feel safer if you came with us, Master Faluel." Friya said.

"And so would I, but an Elder moving would draw too much attention on you." Faluel replied. "People would think we have a solid lead and follow us everywhere. If you go alone, instead, it will seem I'm just another skeptical Elder sending my disciples to look for clues."

"What about Lith?" Nalrond asked. "Won't people suspect he's onto something?"

"Lith?" Faluel snorted. "He's no Elder, plays no politics, and most of all, everyone knows he's your friend and fellow disciple. As long as he acts like he hates being there and whines about you dragging him away from his lab, no one will suspect a thing."

"That should be easy." Friya chuckled. "That sounds like something Lith would do."

Verhen Mansion, a few minutes later.

Lith listened quietly to Nalrond's story, nodding from time to time until the Agni finished his plea.

"I'd like to come with you but I can't." His answer surprised Nalrond and Friya for more than one reason.

Lith sounded sincere and there was a hint of regret in his voice instead of the grumpy annoyance they had been expecting.

"What do you mean, you can't?" Nalrond asked.

"I'd love to help you and bait Meln to his doom but after what Phillard told me, I don't want to leave my mother alone." Lith replied. "I've reinforced security and set up multiple recharge pods for my golems around my house but it's not enough.

"I'm dealing with Awakened with a death wish and I must be sure I can make it come true. I can lend you the Eyes of Menadion. It will make your task much easier."

"Easier how?" Friya snorted. "It will probably dissipate once it gets too far from the tower and even if it doesn't, Nalrond and I have no training in using it. The headaches we'd get while learning to filter the background noise would slow us down too much.

"This is a battle against time, and we are over a week late for the party. We need to find the Rezar before the other Awakened or it will all be for nothing."

"I too am worried about Mom, Lith, but Nalrond needs our help." Solus said. "With all the protections in place to defend Jirni, we just need to ask Mom not to leave the mansion until our return."

Lith looked out the window, weighing his options.

Shargein was playing in the park with Garrik, Elysia would be wherever Kamila brought her, and Kamila would be glued to Elina if he asked her to. The handmaidens, the Emperor Beasts, and many of the Ernas elite forces further secured the place.

"I have to talk to my mother and Kami before giving you my final answer but consider it a yes."

"Thank you!" Nalrond was so happy that he hugged Lith without thinking.

The two men stared at each other like one had stumbled into the other standing naked inside the bathroom and took slow steps back.

"You're welcome." Lith nodded. "Is there anyone else coming with us? Like Quylla or Morok?"

"I'm not going to involve Quylla. She is very pregnant and I'd never forgive myself if something happened to her." Friya replied. "If I were to ask Morok for help, she'd insist on coming so I'm leaving him out as well."

"We need a small, agile team to find the Rezar quickly and leave without drawing attention." Nalrond replied. "The fewer we are, the more the chances to look like just another group of apprentices."

"Then you'd better ask Protector to come as well." Lith said. "He has a much better sense of smell than me and I bet that after living with you for years he remembers what a Rezar smells like.

"The Eyes are not omnipotent. Unless we find a fresh trace of our mark, it's just an uncomfortable pair of glasses."

"If Nalrond is right, the Rezar lived in Gabash for years." Friya pointed out. "Shouldn't that alone offer an excellent starting point?"

"No, since everyone and their dog knows about the village and have already visited it." Lith shook his head. "The lingering energy signature of a true mage fades more quickly than an Awakened's. With every passing minute and each cast spell, the residual mana gets diluted.

"If we find a piece of clothing belonging to the Rezar, instead, Ryman can use it to track down our mark. The problem is that most Emperor Beasts on the case can do the same."

"Then there's no time to lose!" Friya said. "Please, do what you need but be quick. We'll call Ryman in the meantime."

Lith found Elina, Kamila, and Jirni in the same room. They were all knitting baby outfits from balls of wool. Elina and Kamila worked on blue onesies for Raldarak while Jirni on a pink one for Dripha.

Much to Lith's surprise, Jirni was teaching the other two women, giving them pointers on how to use their needles better.

"I would have never thought a busy woman like you knew how to knit, let alone with such skill." Elina said. "Is there anything you're not good at?"

"It's not a big deal, Elina." Jirni's soft smile gave Lith the creeps. "I had years of practice with needles and there's very little I can't do with them."

"Sorry to bother you, ladies." Lith knocked on the doorframe. "I need to speak with my mother and Kami for a second. Do you mind leaving us alone, Jirni?"

She was already up before he could finish the phrase.

"I'll be in my room." Jirni put her tools inside her dimensional amulet and picked Dripha up from the crib, taking the baby with her.

A snap of Lith's fingers insulated the room before he explained Nalrond's predicament and his worries.

"I don't like leaving either of you alone." He said. "Not in a moment like this. I feel like a jerk."

"Don't worry about me, dear. I'm perfectly safe here." Elina gently caressed his head. "I had no plans of leaving the mansion and there's nothing in Lutia that requires my immediate attention."

"I don't like this either, but I like even less the idea of letting an innocent become a lab rat for entitled pricks." Kamila sighed. "This is Nalrond's only chance to learn what happened to the rest of his tribe.

"There might be more than one survivor and maybe one of them was a member of his family. You know nothing can happen to me as long as I have our secret weapon." She gently caressed her womb.

"Also, don't forget I'll be in Elina's shoes once Raldarak is born. You can't always be with us and we must learn to fend for ourselves. We can't live in constant fear and neither can you.

"Consider this a test run of your defense system. If anything goes wrong, Raldarak will be our safeguard."

"Fine, but keep an eye on Valeron at all times." Lith was still worried about his mother's and adoptive son's safety but couldn't refute Kamila's logic. "His identity is still a secret but if someone finds out, we'll be in more trouble.

"The Guardians won't protect Valeron unless we return him to them."

"Don't worry." Kamila chuckled. "He is almost as safe as me."

She pointed at the crib where Surin, Valeron, and Elysia were playing together. Valeron tried to teach the two girls new words but only Elysia understood him. Surin just laughed at the pretty lights the baby boy conjured to keep her attention.

"Elysia and Valeron are inseparable." Kamila said. "If someone touches him, they'll have to deal with her and you know what happens when our baby girl gets angry."

"Let's hope you are right." Lith sighed.

He kissed his wife goodbye and caressed the children one last time before leaving.

"Aren't you forgetting something?" Elina opened her arms for an embrace.

"I'll be back soon, Mom." He hugged her tight, and his wings followed. "Please, be safe."

      And 3588
"I will." Elina nodded. "Be careful out there, sweetie."

"Mom, I'm a Divine Beast and a Magus!"

"And I'm your mother." She took his face in her hands. "Even if you were to become a Guardian, you'll always be my miracle baby."

"Lith and Protector together!" Solus jumped with joy as they picked up Ryman in Lutia. "This brings back so many memories."

"It does." Protector swallowed hard under Selia's glare.

"The fight against the Wither, Balkor, the church of the six. We sure went through thick and thin together." Solus continued, oblivious to the huntress' raising anger. "Friya, you were with us most of the times."

"Yeah, most of the times my husband almost died to help you guys." Selia chimed in before Friya could say a word. "The Wither was everybody's problem but the rest was all about you guys!

"I want him back in mint condition. I'm not going to raise four children alone. Am I clear?"

"Crystal." Nalrond's eyes stared at the huntress' finger that was millimeters away from his nose. "Also, I'll pay Ryman for his trouble. It wouldn't be fair to take him away from his family for nothing."

"We are friends." Ryman sounded offended. "I don't need or want your money. After everything you did for our kids while you lived with us, I should be the one paying you."

"I know we are friends." Nalrond nodded. "That's how I know that your family needs the money. I've got a share of silver mines and no bills to pay whereas you are still an Awakened apprentice who has to take care of four child-sized natural disasters.

"Consider it your compensation for the lost income. After all, you can't work while you help me."

"And we can't keep mooching off Lith." Selia sighed. "I don't like this either, but Nalrond has a point."

Their kids' Skinwalker armor were hand-me-downs from Aran and Leria. On top of that, ever since Selia had Awakened and trained with Kamila, they had moved in with the Verhens, eating their food.

Selia was a proud woman, but enchanted items cost a lot and the practice of magic consumed a lot of energy. On top of that, the time she spent training she couldn't use it to cook, clean, or take care of the children.

She had to rely on Elina's help and Kamila's resources for too many things for her comfort.

"Fine." Protector sighed. "Let's go, then."

They used the Warp Gate in the barn to reach the closest Mage Association branch to the Gabash village but didn't fly straight to their destination.

They split up to cover more ground and explored the area around the village for mana geysers.

"This is no waste of time." Lith explained via the communication amulet. "We can use a mana geyser for recon with the Watchtower once we have a lead on our mark and as a quick way out in case things get messy."

It would also help Solus to keep her strength but everyone knew about her real nature and took it for granted.

They found only one mana geyser near Gabash. Imprinting it required just a few seconds but they took their time to study the situation and scan their surroundings with the Watchtower floor.

"The bad news is there's nothing useful here." Lith said. "The good news is there's nothing useful here. The geyser is abandoned, and even if we rush here, there won't be anyone who can witness the tower's appearance."

"That's good to hear." Nalrond took a deep breath and shapeshifted his clothes into a mage robe with a large hood.

He also switched to his hybrid body. It wasn't as tall as the Agni form but was big enough to make Protector look normal. Then, he traced a few war runes on his face with his fingers.

"What are you doing?" Friya was puzzled. "We need the help of the people of Gabash, not to terrorize them. You look scary."

"That's the idea." He nodded. "As I told you, I went to Gabash in the past. I can't afford anyone to recognize me. The runes will draw the people's attention off my face even if it gets exposed.

"Furthermore, if someone does recognize me, the other Awakened will mistake their surprised expression for fear and ask no questions."

"Good thinking." Friya nodded. "Before we continue to Gabash, is there something we should know about your tribe? Some keyword or a specific sign that will identify us as friends?

"Otherwise even if we find the Rezar, they might run away if you are not with us."

"Just tell him that the Rezars were wrong." Nalrond sighed. "That the sun did rise."

"Is that an inside joke of your tribe?" Lith asked.

"Yes." Nalrond replied. "We always claimed we were so powerful that we could stop the sun from rising. That Dawn would never come."

"I'm sorry, man." Lith patted his shoulder and used the Warp Mirror to cover most of the distance separating them from Gabash.

He could have moved them straight into the village, but Lith wanted to familiarize himself with the area and not scare the locals more than necessary.

Gabash was a medium-sized village, about twice the size of Lutia back when Lith was a kid. There were about a dozen two-story stone houses at the center of the settlement and fifty more around them, all of different sizes and made of wood.

Lith and the others appeared on a road between cultivated fields. The farmers comprised the bulk of Gabash's population and lived on the outskirts of the village. Summer was almost over but wildfires and thieves were always a threat.

The harvest season was around the corner and the crops needed constant supervision, so more than one man witnessed the arrival of the group and snarled.

"This isn't a good sign." Nalrond said while waving the farmers goodbye. "If they've already gotten used to seeing people Warping, there must be way more Awakened than I thought."

His suspicion was confirmed the moment they entered the village. Gabash was bustling with activity like Lutia during the Spring Maiden festival. The restaurant was full and the bakery worked at full capacity to produce enough bread for everyone.

Money flowed and business flourished yet no one looked happy.

The foreigners had a disgruntled expression, either because they considered the hunt for the Rezar a waste of time or because they had yet to find any lead. The natives, instead, found the presence of the foreigners disturbing.

The villagers of Gabash liked money like anyone else but also valued their privacy. The Awakened had long overstayed their welcome and the villagers couldn't wait for their uninvited guests to leave.

A few local brawlers had tried to bully the less intimidating Awakened and persuade them to leave Gabash. They had ended up at the local healer's infirmary where they still resided.

That and a few demonstrations of the foreigners' magical prowess had made it clear that the villagers had no control over their own lives anymore.

"I've heard there's trouble here." Lith walked inside Gabash's main plaza like he owned the place, his Supreme Magus robe flowing behind him thanks to a conjured wind. "Which one of you is the village head?"
