Chapter 3176: First of Her Kind

Tatal eventually recovered from her wounds.

Her tribe had not been forced to abandon its land and scatter to the winds.

Instead, it absorbed the survivors of the Basilisk's rampage and grew. Its reputation had soared, as well, since people of the surrounding lands — those lucky enough to have been spared the Devil's wrath — eventually learned that it was Tatal, the shaman of the Shadow Tribe, who had slain the beast.

There were hard times, at first, because the hunters of the tribe had been decimated, and its chieftain had lost an arm. But the tribe survived and grew stronger for it. The Basilisk had given it great boons in death. Its hide, its bones, its fangs, its soul shards — all of it was used by the tribesmen to empower themselves.

Soon enough, the youths reached adulthood. Trained by Stone Hand, their former chieftain, they became skilled hunters and replaced those who had perished in the woods. The fields expanded. The craftsmen of the tribe developed their craft and reached new heights.

Tatal ruled wisely. She was both beloved and revered by her people, respected by the neighboring tribes... her name had even traveled to faraway lands, earning her a bit of renown and fame.

She still visited the shadow every year, bringing with her stories of her people. One time, not long after the Basilisk had been slain, she came to his cave in a mood that seemed both joyful and melancholic.

"My firstborn is getting married, Shadow."

She smiled joyfully, tears glistening in her eyes.

"He is going to leave the tribe. His bride is from the Otter tribe... they live so far away. When will I see him again?"

Tatal lowered her head.

“I am so happy for him, but I am also so sad. Ah, Shadow... when did life become so complicated?"

Another year, when Tatal came to visit him, her expression was thoughtful.

"Do you know, Shadow? Guests came to the tribe this year. They are people who travel the land, doing nothing but exchanging things. They bartered numerous wondrous items, and they were also interested in purchasing a great deal of things from us... I never really thought about it, but many things we have or make here would seem wondrous to someone else."

She chuckled.

“But they also brought stories. There was a war between the Wolf Tribe and the Elk Tribe, it seems. Seven tribes have come together to build a great temple, somewhere far away, in the lands our ancestors left. The Goddess of the Moon has given birth to a human child. One of the First Humans, a man named Kanakht, is said to have defied the will of the heavens. The world is so vast, Shadow... it makes me so curious. It makes me feel happy to be alive."

Another year, Tatal came bearing gifts.

"Look, Shadow!"

The shadow looked, feeling perplexed.

"What is it?"

Tatal raised the item higher.

“It's called a pillow! There are goose feathers inside. My youngest daughter made it — you are supposed to put your head on it when you sleep. She also did the embroidery!"

Nothing she said made the shadow feel less bewildered.

“I know what a pillow is. Why are you waving it around?"

Tatal blinked a couple of times.

“Well, I just thought... there's nothing but cold stones in your cave. So, I brought you a pillow, for you to rest more comfortably..."

The shadow had to refuse her gift.

He did, however, express his gratitude. Even if he did not have a head to rest on a pillow, the gesture itself, no matter how misguided, was quite sweet.

...He did get the impression that Tatal just wanted to brag about her youngest daughter, though.

Tatal's children grew up. After the firstborn, others had their weddings as well. Her husband retired from being the chieftain and dedicated himself to teaching the young members of the tribe. A new chieftain was selected to replace him, this one coming from a different family.

There were troubles and losses, too. Mystical beasts sometimes set their sights on the tribe's people. Creatures of Corruption — those weak enough for the shadow to ignore — prowled in the darkness. The more Tatal's tribe possessed, the more members of other tribes looked at it with envy.

She had to mediate conflicts at times. At times, she had to take up her bow and her spear, venturing into the forest to fight dangerous creatures. But no matter what happened, Tatal always managed to emerge victorious.

Her fame and reputation slowly grew.

Her power grew, as well.

This primal world was harsh and full of peril, so those who challenged it had no choice but to be tempered by its trials. And so, one day, before the shadow could even consider it, Tatal's soul tore through the boundary of her mortal body, and she became Transcendent — the first Transcendent of her tribe, as well as of all the other tribes in this remote land.

Her Transcendent form was that of a great, magnificent fox.

When Tatal became a Transcendent, there was a great celebration among her people. Beings like her were not unheard of among humans — there had been a lot of them among the mythical First Humans, and there were some among the older tribes that populated distant realms. But in this land, she was the first.

The people who lived here had only ever heard about Transcendent humans in myths and legends. So, they were full of exhilaration and awe.

The shadow, naturally, had an entirely different perspective.

But, still...

He was happy, too.

Because Transcendent beings lived longer lives. That meant that Tatal would be by his side for a bit longer, too.

The tribe was almost unrecognizable by then. What had started as a small scattering of crude tents was now a thriving village with homes built from wood and clay. The tiny pieces of land the tribesmen farmed had turned into vast fields. There were pens for cattle, chickens, and geese.

The crude flint weapons the hunters had used were replaced with copper blades. Instead of hide and fur, they now wore garments made of fabric — some woven out of plants, some out of wool.

Even the wolf-dogs who had been companions of humans for the longest time seemed different, somehow.

The shadow sighed.

‘In the blink of an eye...’

All of this had happened in the blink of an eye.

He was almost worried to imagine what would happen if he closed his eyes and took a little nap.

I just realized that if Sunny had killed the Basilic, he would have heard the spell. When he tried to understand where the sound came from, his data and real name would appear, and boom!!, his memories are back!.

"Estoy tan feliz, Shadow.

    Tatal volvió a reír.

"¡Naturalmente!

‘Todavía no. Todavía no... no debe suceder todavía...’

¿no? Pero... estoy cansada ahora. Estoy lista."

      3177 The Departure

      Time passed.

The world changed, but the shadow remained the same.

Hidden deep within a dark cave, it rested and experienced the changes through its senses. The trees it remembered as young saplings grew into towering giants, only to wither and die; new beasts were born while others weakened and were devoured.

      People changed the most.

Out there, across the vast and terrifying expanse of the world, countless humans struggled to establish themselves against the terrifying Creatures of Corruption across numerous realms. Their tribes were wiped out one after another, only for new ones to arrive in search of a home. Humanity had no advantage in this bloody war; in fact, they were hopelessly outmatched.

      But humans persisted.

They hid, learned, endured... but above all, they changed.

Humans were, after all, a supremely adaptable species. That was what made them so deadly.

In lands where snow and bitter cold prevailed, humans learned how to keep warm. In kingdoms covered by water, they learned to build rafts and canoes. Their flint weapons were replaced by copper blades; their gatherers became farmers, while their hunters became beast tamers.

Craftsmanship, agriculture, animal husbandry... they were learning everything, desperately trying to survive in a world that had no place for them.

In hostile, unfamiliar, and unfathomable lands, humans were surrounded by darkness on all sides. They had to sustain themselves and push back the darkness, lest it devour them.

But the darkness always returned for revenge.

The people of Tatal's tribe had it easier than most because of the shadow. Although they still had to fight the Creatures of Corruption, no abomination powerful enough to destroy the tribe without giving them a chance to fight had ever appeared in their lands. They were also protected by a Shaper of considerable power: the great shaman Tatal, who had slain the Basilisk and become Transcendent.

Because of that, the influence of the Shadow Tribe grew, and soon, the neighboring tribes began to depend on it. Even people from distant lands beyond the shadow's senses sometimes came to pay their respects to Tatal and ask for her advice or assistance.

      She freely gave them both.

For a long time, life was good.

Tatal enjoyed the golden years of her life surrounded by people who admired and loved her. Her tribe prospered, while her family grew.

Her children married one after another. The boys went to live with other tribes, while the girls welcomed their husbands into their homes. Soon, Tatal became a grandmother, and before long, a dozen or more of her grandchildren were running around among a handful of tribes.

Despite being such a prolific grandmother, Tatal still looked quite young; after all, she was a Transcendent. If one didn't know better, they would have thought that she and her daughters were sisters, while her husband was her father.

Young Wolf, now known as Stone Hand, was no longer young. His powerful figure remained upright and imposing, but his hair and beard had turned gray long ago. After losing an arm to the Basilisk's stone curse, he had given up his position as chief and become a teacher to the tribe's youngsters. Many of the tribe's adult members had once been his students, so there were few elders more respected than him.

Despite how different they looked now, Tatal and her husband still lived in perfect harmony. It was just that many things were slowly becoming difficult for him, so she had to help her aging husband with mundane tasks from time to time; other times, their grandchildren helped him instead.

Their home was always filled with the sound of children laughing.

Whenever Tatal visited the shadow, there was always a bright smile on her face.

"I'm so happy, Shadow. I don't think I could be any happier. Life is so hard, but it's also so incredibly wonderful..."

The shadow was satisfied as well. It was enjoying this measured and peaceful existence.

However, time continued to pass, and things continued to change.

      Nothing remained the same forever.

Before long, Tatal's husband died of old age, surrounded by his children and grandchildren. The entire tribe mourned his death, and he was buried with the highest honors they knew how to bestow. As both his wife and the shaman, Tatal performed the rituals to send his shadow to the Realm of Death.

Standing over the grave in the elaborate robes of a shaman, Tatal looked like a young woman as she buried her old husband. Her radiance was striking, and there wasn't a single gray hair on her head... she even looked much younger than her daughters, as though time had no power over her.

The shadow thought that she had handled the loss of her husband quite well. She still smiled warmly whenever she visited, filled with joy and a hunger for life...

But it also noticed that her smile had never been the same since that day.

There was always a tiny hint of melancholy hidden behind her radiant splendor, as if she couldn't help feeling a little sad even during her happiest moments.

With time, Tatal's village became a small city. Wooden and clay huts were replaced by homes built of stone. There was a watermill over a nearby stream and a tall palisade with vigilant sentries. Tatal's grandchildren now had children of their own. Many of them married members of distant tribes, so her lineage spread far and wide, giving birth to exceptional individuals in many places. Some had even reached distant kingdoms, carrying her legacy with them.

      But Transcendents lived long lives.

After burying her husband, Tatal eventually buried her children as well.

She had managed to maintain her composure when old Wolf died... but even her steadfast heart bled when she heard the news that her firstborn had departed for the Realm of Shadows somewhere far away.

When she lowered her daughters into the earth one after another, caressing their thin, gray hair...

Once, she broke down crying in the shadow's embrace, her bitter sobs echoing through the walls of the dark cave.

The next time, she faced it with a hesitant smile...

That day, the shadow noticed streaks of gray in her own hair as well.

It comforted her as best it could. It didn't know much about human emotions, but its company, its mere existence, seemed to be a great comfort to Tatal in itself.

But the shadow itself was uneasy.

It was restless and worried, unable to find peace.

      Time continued its merciless march.

Many years passed, and in what seemed like an instant

But they also brought stories. There was a war between the Wolf Tribe and the Elk Tribe, it seems. Seven tribes have come together to build a great temple, somewhere far away, in the lands our ancestors left.
is this the temple sunny uses if it is shouldn't it already have been made

i don't think it's the nameless temple. it mentioned 'somewhere far away, in the lands our ancestors left'. shouldn't they have left it in the then heart forest, now burned forest? also, sunny suspected that its 'wandering' component was divine sorcery, so seeing as the gods were indifferent and distant during this time period, it's not realistic that one just had the heart to make the slightest effort.
maybe the temple they mentioned here was the one sunny conquered and was then stolen by that stupid bird. it was located in the outskirts of the burned forest and it makes sense to be the location accessible to the then-present-day humans to be only able to access its outskirts after it was destroyed

Maybe now it's just a temple later, some god makes so it can teleport. And that's why it's not in burned forest

Aren’t the gods supposed to be genderless? If they want to have a child they could probably just wave their hands and make one from thin air, or magically impregnate some random woman.

Maybe gods give birth to humans? Like Awakeneds doesn't give birth to Awakeneds. I think gods might be same? Otherwise when in future, if sunny and nephis have a child, it will directly be a god?

It depends on what you mean by "new." If it's something completely different, something no one has ever created, then no. Everything that wasn't created by the Flame was created by the Void. Creating something fundamentally new is impossible. Besides, creation isn't a property of the Flame, but a property of powerful beings, Gods, Spirits, and Creatures of the Void. If "new" is something that doesn't belong to any of the 7 gods, then yes, I think it's quite possible. But a person must first become a god and not lose their uniqueness in the process, which is difficult, to say the least. These are just my theories.
