Chapter 3026: All Over Again

Some time later, Sunny left the Bastion manor of the White Feather clan in lifted spirits. It felt good to be the bearer of good news, for once...

‘Perhaps I do only speak with Tyris when something awful has happened.'

Sunny pondered his habits for a few moments.

But then, he couldn't quite imagine just visiting Sky Tide casually. A social call, to Sky Tide? How would that even look like? Sunny remained motionless for a while, then shook his head and continued walking.

‘Plus, it's awkward, because everyone else thinks I'm dead.'

Being both dead and a demigod limited Sunny's opportunities to socialize quite a bit. On the bright side, that only made him appreciate the few relationships he did have so much more.

And speaking of those...

The speech was going to start soon, so he had to hurry.

Reaching a deep shadow cast onto the ground by the wall of the Castle, Sunny stepped into it and emerged in the corridor of a tall building that stood in one of the lakeshore neighborhoods of Bastion.

He knocked on it, waited for a bit, and knocked once more.

A moment later, a familiar voice resounded from behind the door.

"Come in!"

Sunny walked inside and smiled.

"I was in Bastion, so I decided to pay a visit..."

There was an old man with disheveled hair and eyebrows that seemed to have a life of their own inside the room. He glanced at him and grinned.

“Sunny, my boy!"

Then, he froze for a moment, covered his mouth, and whispered:

“Oh... I'm sorry. Sunny, my boy."

Closing the door behind him, Sunny chuckled.

“Thank you for your understanding, Teacher Julius."

Julius was one of the few people Sunny had revealed himself to after returning from the Tomb of Ariel. Back then, the moment he walked through the door, the old man joyfully welcomed him in this exact manner. He did not seem shocked by the fact that one of his students had magically risen from the dead at all.

In fact, Sunny had been a little disappointed back then. Looking at the old man, he hesitated for a moment and then asked:

"You don't seem surprised to see me, Teacher?"

Julius chuckled.

"I might be old, but I am not feeble-minded yet."

With that, he opened a drawer and pulled out a copy of the Exploration Report on Everything.

The old man patted its cover lovingly.

“Sunny... do you know how people sometimes say that they would want nothing more than to forget a book they love, just to be able to read it for the first time all over again? Well, who could have known that it would actually happen to me?"

He chuckled.

“The first few weeks after my memory was wiped — and everyone else's — were quite hectic. But then, I discovered this paper and... by the dead gods! It was like I turned into a little kid again, having received the best gif of my life. Not only was the paper riveting, but I also couldn't help but recognize my own student's writing style. Each true explorer has their own approach, you know?"

Julius shook his head and pulled something else from the drawer.

It was a familiar-looking letter.

“And then I found this. Ah... you almost made this old man cry, Sunny."

He looked at the letter for a while, then put it down.

“To think that when we met, you could barely write..."

Sunny frowned.

“What are you talking about, Teacher? I was perfectly literate, thank you very much! The fact that I wasn't fluent in a bunch of dead languages does not mean that I couldn't write!"

Julius waved a hand and turned back to the Exploration Report once more.

“And now... the River People are actually back. Real natives of the Dream Realm, Sunny! Do you even understand... well, of course you do. You had something to do with them emerging from the Tomb of Ariel, I bet!"

He laughed.

"As expected of my student..."

Sunny shook his head and sat down, pointing to the Exploration Report with a wry smile.

"You don't even know the half of it, Teacher. I did not remain idle after writing that, you know. In fact... I spent a bit of time in an actual pre-Dark Times society, reached the bottom of the Stormsea and raided... uh... explored a mystical city built by the Demon of Repose, conversed with not one, but two Supremes from the ancient past of the Dream Realm, found the original Seed of Nightmare, got robbed by a Terror who had once stolen Weaver's eye..."

He paused for a moment.

"Oh! And I also met the Wandering Archon. Granted, we didn't get a chance to speak."

Sunny fell silent, remained silent for a while, and then grinned.

"So... how many contribution points do you think we can get?"

That was almost a year ago, and today, Teacher Julius was finishing the work on the Annotated Commentary and Addendum to the Exploration Report of Everything — in the free time he had left after fulfilling his duties as the architect of the new education system, tutoring Little Ling, and being one of the people responsible for diplomatic relations with the River People.

The old man liked to stay busy, it seemed. Sunny sat down and glanced around, trying to guess what Teacher Julius was working on now.

"Are you not going to see the speech today?"

Julius chuckled.

"Of course I am going. It is a historic event, after all — quite possibly one of the last few historic events we have left. However, there are too many people in Bastion, and too few of them can get close enough to Lady Nephis to make the experience memorable. So, in a short while, I will depart for the waking world and listen to the speech on the screen of my communicator. That will be far more convenient."

Sunny raised an eyebrow.

“Surely, you could get a good spot if you wanted to, considering your status."

Teacher Julius smiled.

“These old bones are more comfortable on my sofa at the Awakened Academy. Let the young and the restless compete for a glimpse at the shining goddess of humanity... I'd rather surrender my spot to them."

He paused for a moment and chuckled.

“Plus, I have an audience with Lady Nephis in a week. So why would I compete at all?"

Then, Teacher Julius gave Sunny a wry look and asked:

“But did you really just happen to come by, Sunny? Or was there something you wanted?"

Sunny sighed.

“Oh, well... actually, I have something for you."

When he produced a printed booklet and handed it to Julius, the old man's eyes lit up.

“You did it!"

There was a title on the booklet as well, reading:

Observations on the Frozen Wasteland (In Short: It's Really Cold), by: Soul Reaper Jet (No One Can Survive There Anyway, So Why Am I Wasting My Time on This?)

Teacher Julius glanced at the booklet, a wide smile appearing on his face.

“I knew that if there was anyone who could convince that murderous woman, it was you! Well done, my boy!"

Sunny shrugged.

"You are welcome. And yes — she did indeed discover where the Hollow Mountains end, which disproved the Universal World Wall theory posed by..." The two of them dove into a lively discussion, losing track of time.

So, before they knew it, Teacher Julius had to depart for the Gateway.

And Sunny... Sunny had to focus his attention elsewhere.

If I'm not mistaken, some of them (the shadows) have their own flame (maybe all of them). Remember that our dear skeleton Eurys from the nine said that for Sunny's shadows to be real shadows...(creatures of the shadows) They only needed one thing, I theorized a while ago based on Mordret mirror specters that what Sunny's shadows need is a shadow core. I think this will happen when he goes to the Shadow Realm, because then he would be able to recreate his core multiple times with relative ease.

    Chapter 3027

    3027 Sudden Realization

In a brightly lit chamber in the main keep of Mirage Castle, Nephis stood alone, surrounded by marble and lavish tapestries. The marble was white; the tapestries were white, as well, embroidered gorgeously with golden thread. The sheer curtains woven out of finest silk chiffon billowed in the wind like the wings of a celestial creature.

Nephis was looking at the floor, her expression placid. She remained motionless for a few seconds, then sighed deeply and glanced up.

Sunny rose from her shadow, walked over to one of the walls, and leaned on it with his arms crossed.

    "Nervous?"

Nephis would have looked like the epitome of composure to anyone else, but he could tell that she was uncomfortable — large crows and public speaking were not exactly her element, after all.

The vast crowd gathered outside was waiting to behold the goddess of humanity, enthralled by her lofty image. However, none of them could imagine that their goddess was actually feeling anxious and uncomfortable at the prospect of appearing in front of so many people.

Nephis glanced at Sunny, hesitated for a moment, and then shrugged.

    “A little.”

    She sighed.

“It's funny, isn't it? I think I'd feel far more at ease facing a horde of powerful abominations as opposed to a crowd of people. I am a Supreme now, and yet, in moments like this, I feel no different from how I felt as a young and inexperienced, ignorant youth."

    Sunny smiled.

“I wouldn't say that it is funny. Possibly a little bit amusing."

He shook his head and added in a reassuring tone:

“There's this trick I learned from Effie. When you're out there, in front of all those people, just imagine that all of them are..."

He felt silent for a moment.

The conventional wisdom suggested that one should imagine the audience naked in order to overcome stage fright, but when Sunny thought about it... it was actually awful advice! If he did something like that, he would feel disturbed and flustered instead of calm — not to mention that going around imagining what random people looked like under their clothes was something only perverts did.

Plus, that was Nephis he was talking about. She wouldn't be disturbed or flustered — at best, she would be completely indifferent. At worst, she would start wondering why all these people were naked, and if more resources needed to be allocated to developing a more robust textile industry in the Dream Realm.

    Sunny cleared his throat.

"Just imagine that all of them are Nightmare Creatures."

Nephid tilted her head, then nodded.

    “Thank you. Actually, that helped."

Sunny opened his mouth to say something, but at that moment, there was a knock on the door — that was the attendants informing Nephis that her entrance was only a few minutes away.

With a sigh, she walked over to the door and stopped near it.

Then, Nephis glanced to the side, at one of the gorgeous tapestries adorning the wall. Her expression shifted faintly. Eventually, she raised a hand and ran it across the surface of the tapestries.

    “When did they change it?"

    Sunny raised an eyebrow.

    “Change what?"

Nephis gestured vaguely to the surrounding chamber.

“The tapestries, the curtains... everything here used to be vermilion before. The color of Clan Valor."

She studied the delicate embroidery for a while, then turned away.

“Someone had to commission all these and refurbish the decor of the entire main keep... of the entire Castle? And I don't even know who it was, and when it happened.”

A pale smile appeared on Neph's lips.

“Goes to show how vast and immense the Human Domain is, I guess. It's bigger than you and me, at least."

Sunny sighed, pushed himself off the wall, and walked behind her.

Placing his hands on her shoulders, he massaged them gently.

"It is. And now, you need to address that immense Domain of yours. Relax... I'll cook you something delicious when you're done. We can even sneak away to have a picnic."

    Nephis smiled.

    "A picnic... that sounds nice."

She sighed and then put her hand on the door, ready to push it open.

    Then, however, she halted.

A few seconds passed in silence, and then Nephis said slowly:

    "Remembrance Day..."

Her voice sounded a little distant.

Sunny folded his hands behind him.

    “What about it?"

    Nephis shook her head.

"No, it just... I was thinking about that name, Remembrance Day. So I glanced back to remember, as well. And then it hit me”

    She exhaled slowly.

“They are dead. All three of them... Aster, Song, Vale. They are gone now."

She stared at the door, an aloof expression on her face.

"I... I did not stop to consider that until now. It never even crossed my mind. All my life, I survived in defiance of them — so much so that my self became defined in opposition to theirs. And now that they are gone... I have forgotten to acknowledge that fact."

Nephis closed her eyes for a moment and then said:

“It feels like the end of something profound. The end of an era."

Sunny remained silent for a moment. Then, he spoke in a candid tone:

"Listen, I hate to be that guy... but technically, the Dreamspawn is not dead. He's still around, albeit sealed away for all eternity."

    Nephis laughed quietly.

    "Right. How could I forget?"

With that, she pushed the doors open and walked outside. Sunny collapsed into a shadow and glided across the marble floor as well, hiding in hers.

Together, they entered a stone tribune that loomed above a vast courtyard, extending into it like a vast spearhead. The courtyard was flooded with innumerable people, the crowd spilling onto the lower levels of the Castle, all the way to the shores of the Mirror Lake.

The crowd roared in excitement, welcoming Changing Star of the Immortal Flame clan to the stage.

Nephis smiled, stared at the crowd for a short while, and then raised a hand.

    "People of the Human Domain..."

I want sunny to meet with others on forgotten shore like with harper, caster, harus, gemma, gunlaug, etc, it would be nice if they get some onscreen time too...

his meets with naeve, bloodwave, beth, are remaining, with morgan and seishan too but i dont think they would show much of a reaction or even care...

plus why are all reactions toward sunny are so blatant like they don't care much, like tyris showed almost no reaction, roan got offscreened, mordret doesn't care about his nemesis, almost zero interaction between cassie and sunny, effie's and aiko reaction was also not that much... even nightmare spell from which I expected no reaction gave a proper welcome back to him.

the only genuine reactions were of nephis, kai, jet, kim, luster, quentin, rain and julius... that's it, I mean its ok but Sunny and all the audience were crying for him to be remembered and even getting remembered doesn't impacted as much as I thought, I know he needs to be hidden from world but come on...

This is just an incredible chapter. Why didn’t we get a chapter like this for every character, where each of them remembers meeting him?

And I also feel like there isn’t enough emphasis on the fact that Sunny is a Supreme. Like, it would have been so cool if Julius had said something like:

“My boy, back then you barely knew how to write. And now you are a Supreme, a demigod. I am so proud of you.”
