Chapter 2860: Behind the Throne

Far away, Cassie was walking through the corridors of the Ivory Tower.

The great pagoda felt empty now that Nephis and Sunny were away. Most of the Fire Keepers had departed, as well, sent to put out numerous fires consuming humanity.

At least Rain was here... the young woman spent most of her time meditating, though, hard at work to make her Ascension happen. So, Cassie often felt that she was the only person left on the Ivory Island.

The only person left in the world.

Of course, it was only her body that remained on the flying island. Her mind, meanwhile, encompassed all of the world, sharing the senses of countless people across the Human Domain. Witnessing them.

She was communicating with dozens of people at any given moment, as well. After all, humanity was in the throes of a global crisis, quaking as it was besieged from all sides.

The waking world continued to be consumed by the ever-increasing number of Nightmare Gates and the waves of abominations they unleashed. In the Dream Realm, hordes of Nightmare Creatures were prowling the edges of the Human Domain, driven mad by the scent of human souls. Asterion's plague was spreading like wildfire, slowly consuming everything.

And on top of that, the King of Nothing had invaded the Human Domain from the north, posing a threat that was more dire than even the Dreamspawn.

Cassie was merely a Saint, but at the moment, she represented the throne of the Immortal Flame. She was the stand-in for the ruler of humanity, and therefore, it was her duty to guide the Human Domain through these calamities...

Or try to, at least.

There was so much she had to do, so much she had to coordinate, so many things she needed to observe, comprehend, and react to accordingly.

There was a litany of voices in Cassie's head, all asking for direction.

It was overwhelming, but she methodically responded to each of them, providing the necessary information, making countless decisions, and giving orders. Creating a semblance of order out of the raging ocean of chaos.

[The campaign is over, Commander. You must abandon the forward camp of the expedition and pull your forces back. Retreat west, then march north toward the Black Mountains posthaste to bolster the local garrisons. Speed is of utmost importance...]

[No reinforcements will be available in the foreseeable future. You must establish a strict curfew and transition the city to martial law, evacuate fringe districts, and relocate all troops to protect the city core. Ensure that the Special Directives are strictly adhered to...]

[There will be no supply shipments this month, and perhaps next month as well. Your only hope to avoid mass starvation is to ration food while sending out hunting parties to slay and slaughter Nightmare Creatures. Use emergency funds to double the reward independent Awakened receive for donating salvaged materials, as long as they are edible...]

[Relocate all Awakened engineers north immediately. The existing fortifications are woefully insufficient for what is about to come, so we must establish a robust defensive line in a matter of days — two weeks at most. Recruit specialists among the veterans of the Southern Campaign...]

[You must hurry, Kai. You can sacrifice the Citadel, and you can sacrifice the Lake of Tears as well — but people come first. As long as people survive, we can rebuild whatever is destroyed.]

Mordret had already taken the Glass Hell. Godgrave was as good as lost. He was not going to attack Ravenheart — at least not yet — because the defenses of the city were too formidable. Whoever ruled the Jade Palace could awaken the volcanoes and incinerate anyone trying to attack the city from the north, as well.

However, all the other regions bordering the Hollow Mountains were doomed to fall. Jet had already evacuated the Sanctuary, but the Lake of Tears had to be defended until its citizens could flee to Ravenheart and other cities of the former Song Domain.

At the same time, in the East, all Citadels north of the Black Mountains had to be abandoned — simply because they were not defensible enough, and there was no time to establish a robust defensive line on any terrain there. So, Cassie had to take measures in order to stop Mordret's advance at the Black Mountains, which was why she was mobilizing all available forces and sending them north.

...And all the while, Asterion continued to spread his plague, enthralling even Saints now.

‘Nephis, Sunny... you must hurry.'

Cassie grimaced and massaged her temples, dazed by the mad kaleidoscope of senses and perspectives she was experiencing.

Her Transcendent mind was far more potent than that of any mundane human. No, in fact, she was outstanding even among Saints... but she was still a mere mortal. Pushing herself that way was taxing, and even then, she had already hit her limit.

At times, it felt as if her mind would shatter under the weight of all these memories. But it never did.

It had not shattered yet, at least. Continuing on her way, Cassie continued to send countless mental messages.

[Retreat three hundred kilometers west and establish a new camp. The forces of the Aegis Rose clan will rendezvous with your soldiers there.]

[Yes, the Fire Keepers have received the data. A cohort is already on its way to contain the emerging Gate. They'll be there in time.]

[Burn the crops. Losing the latest harvest will be a setback, but if these plants escape from under our control, the damage will be far more dire.]

[You have my permission to arm the civilians. I will take authority.]

[This is the will of the Immortal Flame. Lady Nephis will act when she thinks it's needed.]

Cassie stumbled.

All these perspectives made it difficult to remain aware of her own body. Her missing eye pulsated with a dull pain, and she felt uncomfortable without the Quiet Dancer on her belt.

But, still...

‘We will prevail.'

Cassie believed it wholeheartedly. She had to believe it.

She was just not sure how much would be sacrificed to achieve that triumph...

I'm starting to think the reason we see Cass all broken up is cause Sunny got his fate back, I mean it would make sense all those years of memories flowing straight into her mind while she's handling thousands of people at the same time plus her eye it's be alot. Cause I use to think maybe asterion broke her or maybe she entered the 5th nightmare but it doesn't seem like they can enter the 5th nm just yet

Are we back to the old narrative style? If not, is this a new memory or the same? Then why does the perspective jump so much? The scenes go like this: 1) Cassie remembers Sunny and Nephys leaving. 2) Since her memories are now in complete disarray, she remembers things she should have forgotten, switches to Sunny's point of view, and sees events from the desert. 3) When the available information from the desert runs out, she returns back to the point of view of Saint Cassie, who no longer remembers anything.
Thus, the first and third scenes seem to hide the second. But why does she remember Sunny in the desert at all? She removed her mark before their departure. Has Sunny already returned and shared his memories from the desert with Cassie? Has Cassie somehow miraculously restored her mark after the return of fate? Is this part of her supreme powers? Is this some kind of convoluted prophecy?
Just don't tell me this is just a quirk of the narrative; I'm not here for boring answers.

She doesn’t know where Sunny and Nephis are, because in previous chapters it was said that this information was concealed only they know where they went.

We readers have almost omniscient points of view. What happened was: Cassie remembered the message she left for herself and the conversation she had with Sunphis. Cut, now the point of view shifts from Cassie's memory to some point in the past where Sunphis begins his journey. And with our almost omniscient point of view, we saw the continuation of what happened, then it cuts again and we return to the present in Cassie's mind.

For example, when Jet flees to the forgotten coast (Shadow City), Cassie had already removed the probe she planted on Jet, and had no memory of her saying she was going to the ice desert. We also saw this, even though Cassie didn't know it.

Yeah, that's the simplest and most likely answer, but also the most boring. And weird. And frustrating.

By telling the story from Cassie's perspective, who tells us the story from everyone else's perspective, g3 kind of incorporates "perspective" into the novel's logic. Now it's not a tool that exists only outside the fictional world, but a part of that world itself. And then after a while, it all comes back. It's as if the bonfire revival and the loss of humanity in Dark Souls appeared somewhere in the middle of the game and disappeared after a couple of bosses. Like, the hell was that?

Was it just a narrative device that was best suited for this volume? Is this one of the novel's major twists? Is g3 just showing off?
Very weird. This whole damn volume is very weird.

Well, weaver said to cassie that he would show her how god's die. I think when fate got restored, cassie got some kind of ability to see the strings of fate like sunny can with the weaver mask, and that's why she seems so omniscient and has memories that didn't belonged to her.

Shadow god is the only true god of peace

"The gods were dead, and yet they listened."

[Shadow God stirs in his eternal slumber.]

[He sends a blessing from beyond the grave.]

[Child of Shadows, receive your blessing!]

"Life is just the prelude to death, and war is just the key to open its gates."

"Everything you cherish... will one day be mine, be welcomed by me, swallowed by me, and find peace within me."

"I am Death, and no one escapes Death...

Yes I know, I recently switched sides again

I just noticed. The gods are all dead, swallowed by death. Since death is shadow god....

He swallowed himself last. Became true death and truly dead...yet he responded to Sunny's blood....

Makes me question...did weaver's blood really fully consume shadow lineage or is it all still deception and lies? Another mystery? hmmm....

I have no way to back this up, but I bet Weaver made some kind of deal with Shadow God. Both are nefariously scheming and as nebulous, so there should to be some sort of discussion between the two before Weaver fully unleashed the Nightmare Spell and killed the Gods.

You know? As I'm writing this—I bet that Weaver made a deal with Shadow God to "lend" the concept of Death to Weaver so Weaver could use it to kill every God and Daemon. As for what Shadow God get at the end of the deal... Well, God of Peace, so I'm getting that Shadow God did it to support Weaver's plan in keeping the Forgotten God asleep.

I was imagining some things and wrote this for fun after reading your post.

Sunny opens the doors to the castle halls and looks at the figures before her, shadows of long-dead figures.

"Finally arrived, our heir," says a shadow with several arms, seven fingers on each hand, its face covered by a mask.

"The plan is almost complete," said Shadow.

"Now all that's left is for us to 'enter' your army and accompany you to the final seed."

Sunny had already discovered Weaver's plans, knew the place of that nebulous demon, as well as his role in it and Shadow's.

"Of course, I hope you've prepared for this, Shadow," said Sunny as he transformed Serpent into an odachi.

Shadow laughs and says "of course."

He was already ready for this, there was no need for a long conversation, his role ends there.

      *Swing*

      [You received a Memory]

Sunny heard the spell's voice speak at that moment.

"Now it's your turn, you bastard," Sunny says to Weaver.

Weaver sighs, more for the symbolism than anything else. out of necessity

      And it says

      "——— "

      ***

      [You received a shadow]

As Azarax said, Sunny and Nephis are too fragile, too kind. I doubt that if it were the Steel Plague, the conqueror of a thousand kingdoms, it wouldn't have decimated Asterion and his followers the moment he appeared, even if it meant decimating a good part of humanity along with him.
