Chapter 2855: Vessels of the Gods

Sunny remained silent for a while, pondering on what Azarax had told them. It was quite interesting, but not entirely useful knowledge... it certainly wasn't going to help them conquer the Nightmare Desert, at the very least.

However, Sunny felt very refreshed while talking to Azarax. Even if the ancient tyrant was not entirely sane, he far more talkative and far less untrustworthy than Eurys — finally, there was someone from the bygone era with whom they could hold an actual conversation.

Nephis regarded the ancient skeleton intently, then asked in an even tone:

“There had to be a reason why all these warriors clashed in the Hell of Ariel, though. How did this battle even happen?"

Azarax raised his skull to the sky and let out a cackling laughter.

"How did it happen? How did it happen... ah..."

His voice broke strangely, and he fell silent for a moment.

"That is not for you to know, abomination."

He attempted to sound spiteful, but Sunny did not miss a hint of a deeper, far more profound emotion in the skeleton's disembodied voice.

That emotion was fear.

Azarax did not fear to remember the battle in the Hell of Ariel, where countless lives had been reaped by the jaws of war. Rather, it seemed that he was frightened by the fact that he could not remember.

His spite was meant to hide the fact that he had no answer.

Thousands of years of imprisonment were too much even for a Supreme to endure. Eurys admitted freely that he had lost his mind many times while hanging on the tree... Azarax, however, was not willing to admit even a hint of weakness, and therefore, he had no choice but to hide his broken state.

“It does not matter why the battle happened. All you need to know is that it was glorious."

The skeleton laughed again.

"Dozens of Supremes had led the endless legions of their Domains to the Hell of Ariel to slaughter each other. We proud few were merely subordinated on this awesome battlefield, though! Spirits and Divine Beasts led the great armies, all clamoring to rip each other apart. Millions of Awakened, thousands of Transcendent sages, hordes of Devils, hundreds of Titans — all locked in a fierce battle, making the very foundation of the world tremble, making the winds howl in terror."

His skeletal grin was the same as always, but somehow, it seemed to widen.

"Soon enough, the sands of Hell were painted golden red, blood and ichor mixing like wine and water. Days passed, then weeks. Then, months..."

Nephis interrupted his tirade with a pointed question:

“So why did Shadow God curse you all?"

Azarax glared at her in anger.

“Why else? It was because the Divine Host was on the verge of suffering defeat. Those dogs wanted to besiege the Underworld, but they couldn't even conquer Hell — so, in the end, Shadow had to descend into Hell himself. We lured him here with a dazzling hecatomb! Here, he faced the Demon of Repose in combat... but instead of fighting to the bitter end, the coward chose to end the battle and crawl back into his lightless realm."

Sunny perked up.

“Shadow God fought Rime here? And was forced to retreat?”

Azarax let out a contemptuous laugh.

"Of course! Death held no power over our Lady of Repose. Death could not eradicate hope, either, so he was powerless against the Demon of Desire as well. The Demon of Imagination ruled everything she could imagine, and since she could easily conceive of death, Death feared her too. He could not dream of defeating any of the Demons, that faint and feeble god — that coward. So he could only slither away in defeat."

Sunny gave Azarax a dubious glance. Somehow, he doubted that the ancient tyrant was telling the truth.

Even if Shadow God had indeed fought the Demon of Repose in the Nightmare Desert, Sunny was sure that the story of their battle was quite different from what Azarax thought he knew.

Sunny was also certain that Shadow God could have been anything, but he definitely had been neither weak nor feeble. After all, he was the last one to fall when the Nightmare Spell rose from Weaver's corpse to devour the gods.

“What do you mean when you say that Shadow God descended into Hell?"

Nephis had walked away from the pool of water and was now standing in front of the crucified skeleton.

"Shadow God was the Shadow Realm, and the Shadow Realm was Shadow God. How could he have come to Ariel's Hell and then retreated back?"

Azarax looked down at her, darkness nestling in his empty eye sockets.

“His vessel did."

The ancient tyrant moved his skull a little.

"The gods... the gods were younger, once. But by the time the daemons rose against them in rebellion, they were old. They had wasted too much of themselves, becoming too vast and too great to resemble living beings. They barely possessed any personhood anymore, slowly turning into elemental forces. So, they could only retain their agency by limiting themselves to the confines of a mortal vessel — of an avatar."

Azarax hissed.

"It was the avatar of Shadow God who came to Ariel's Hell, lost the battle against the Demon of Repose, and destroyed both armies with his cruel curse. To mock her!"

Sunny raised an eyebrow.

“Such a terrifying battle... the greatest battle to have ever been fought, perhaps. I would have expected the avatar of War God to show up, instead.”

The ancient tyrant laughed.

"That one? That one was not ready for the horror of our battle, yet."

Sunny frowned.

“How so?"

Azarax turned his head sideways and stared at the wounds on the bark of the sacred tree where another set of nails had once been, impaling another skeleton.

“The avatar of War was too young. The former one... the Dragon... was the founder of the War Empire. He was merely a cheap imitation, though — an imitation of me."

Sunny and Nephis looked at each other. After remaining silent for a few moments, Sunny scratched the tip of his nose.

"What? That doesn't really... make sense. First of all, had the War Empire not existed for a thousand years? Wouldn't you be an imitation of its founder, instead?"

He shook his head.

“Actually, I wanted to ask. You call yourself a great conqueror, but conquest and warfare were the bread and butter of the War Empire. Weren't you a champion of War God, yourself?"

Azarax simply laughed.

There was a hint of bitterness in his voice, though.

"A champion of War God? No... why should I have bowed to a god? I, Azarax the Conqueror, have never bowed to anyone — or any thing. Countless realms bowed to me, instead."

He paused for a moment, then added in a wrathful voice:

“But in the end, my empire was destroyed by a champion of War God. The War Empire was built on its ruins — and in its image — and ruled by an avatar of War, thriving for a thousand years."

His empty eye sockets glistened wickedly.

"Until Eurys, that cunning wretch, killed the avatar of War God and sealed the Empire's fate. That was why when the Doom War started, an avatar of War God was nowhere to be seen."

I just realised that we already know what one of the avatars for one of the gods look like. It's storm god and she looks like Saint but like many times more beautiful.

"Of course! Death held no power over our Lady of Repose. Death could not eradicate hope, either, so he was powerless against the Demon of Desire as well. The Demon of Imagination ruled everything she could imagine, and since she could easily conceive of death, Death feared her too. Death resembles Sunny by being hella underestimated by everyone, including the other gods such as War. Guess its in the nature of shadows such as Sunny to be like Death to wrap themselves in deceit and mystery

This could be perfectly a future nightmare. In which Sunny has to incarnate Shadow God's avatar and face the battle against the rest demon. If events happen as Azarax said, it will complete the nightmare. If he gets to win where the Shadow God's avatar lost he'll receive a rating of "glorious".

Auro won't have anything to do with the Avatar of the god of war? He had the most cruel mission of all, that mission could be to become an avatar and be killed by Eurys. After all he was a soldier of war.

Well Sunny is a Young Suprem whit what,? 26-27 years old. They live a long lives, maybe forever, that is like a baby for inmortal creatures. Azarax say "he was not ready".

Of course this is just a theory. But think about it. What a fate would be worse than alliing with the killers and slavers of your people. Make them trust you, earn their respect as the greatest of them, then have to die by the hand of Eurys, his friend. As for the goal of his death, it might be that the god of war cannot have another avatar at the critical moment. I guess not anyone can be an avatar. So denying a deity's biggest weapon could be quite important.

    Quote: ZionCrestZero
Ayt, since I've berated your theory enough, I feel bad to just leave you hanging without a proper explanation. You might reread everything (without skimming) and hate me later when you finally understand. Better to hate me now and understand than to hate me without even understanding why.

    So here's what's wrong.

Soul crystals are not soul cores. That's a different thing.
For titans that have multiple cores, they have a passive(like sunny) and activated (neph and mordy) extra ability. Mordred doesn't make actual reflections of himself by using his activated soul core. Mordret shatters one of his soul cores to create a reflection of his soul to anchor a piece of his soul into a vessel. He loses that core's essence and rank until he can reform it by consuming thousands of soul shards.

In the battle against the Skinwalker, Mordret utilized a unique adaptation of his core-splitting ability and flaw to counter a hive-mind entity.

Mordret "split" his soul into fragments to challenge each individual vessel of the Skinwalker at the same time.

Normally, losing a Soul Duel means death. However, by splitting himself, even if one fragment of his soul lost a duel, he had other fragments still active to continue the fight.

He systematically weakened the Skinwalker by defeating its vessels one by one until he took over the entire hive mind.

Additionally sunny doesn't make reflections or copies of himself nor does his passive ability, the shadow incarnations, makes him loose himself. He only looses himself when he shadow dance into another person or nightmare creature because he no longer has his true name to anchor himself back with his persona "lost from light". Therefore he may literally get lost from light while he's shadow dancing into someone else.

Another thing, Euris said saint and slayer are incomplete shadows. They're not like the shadow race that were driven to extinction by the Imperials of war god. One of them was the 4 armed shadow sunny inhabited in one of the Nightmare seeds. They're complete and sentient, able to evolve by themselves like sunny.

Sounds like Shadow god used armies as guard dogs for the tomb. Or he just stole shadows for his own purposes. Also, if I remember correctly, the hole which leads to the Shadow realm is relatively close, so "just an avatar" might have been a lie too. And since he Forgot parts of it, its either Sunny, Forgotten god, or more likely Oblivion related. Mortality is needed to not become corrupt, but they can "reset" and forget corruption, by using Oblivion powers.
If I had to guess, armies were fighting against some void corrupt things, if not against that titan who became the tomb. To avoid turning into corrupt creatures, they abused Oblivion powers, so eventually they forgot whom they were fighting, and started killing each other. Shadow god stealing shadows as a tactical move, to make immortals, seems wrong though. Maybe Oblivion couild make them forget they were dead, so their shadows just left with Shadow god to rest? Or Demon of Repose did something similar to them, since similar thing already happened elsewhere, due to her. So they might be double immortals. In the end Oblivion died and was entombed.

The lore is so juicy j0j01

Azarax is definitely talking shit. If Shadow was the last to be consumed by the spell, he was for sure more powerful than gods and the Daemons ( which includes Rime ).

There is a massive piece of information Azarax has forgotten.

What was the reason for this war again?
It was because the demon of choice, who was having an affair with the goddess of the dark skies, discovered that gods lie, so he asked his divine beloved if she loved him. She said no, because demons cannot be loved, so Nether killed her and spread the rumor that his ex was a liar and crazy. Then the Nine fostered this idea among the other demons, and then Nether, along with almost all the siblings—the schizophrenic Mirage, the strange Ariel, the needy Rime, and Ms. Dictionary Hope—declared war on the old and weak gods.

The only ones who didn't participate in this war were Weaver, who realized that this war was pointless, and I forgot about the other one.

All this happened because of the failed relationship between the demon of choice and the goddess of the dark skies.

Hail Weaver, hail the Dreams god

This is a very good theory. But Nether killed storm god?

If their relationship soured, Nether wouldn't keep her statue at the Ebony Tower and would've destroyed it right?

I don't know, he seems like the type of person who cries over his ex and calls her. I suspect he killed her avatar because he was the first to spill divine blood and was possibly her lover.

I think it's just a way to show Nazer's anguish. He despises the gods, hates them, and wants to destroy them, but he can't completely abandon his beloved. He remembers her beauty too clearly, both literally and abstractly. That's why he didn't want to throw away her bust. That's why he created an entire race in her image. He wanted to recreate what he couldn't forget in order to prove to himself that he could find a replacement for her "beauty," that he could replicate it and surpass the Storm Goddess, and therefore he could control his own emotions.
This also highlights a common trait among demons. At least three of them suffer from their own Concept. The Weaver wanted to destroy fate, Ariel wanted to forget the truth, and Nazeer couldn't choose between war and admiration. Perhaps Hope also suffered from hope. This may be because all the Concepts related to the Forgotten God are little... broken.

So, as far as I'm understanding. The demons did not "kill" the gods, but rather their avatars? However, the gods were closer to fundamental aspects of nature than sentient beings in their true forms. Without their avatars, they are not really "sentient". So they're essentially brain dead, but their bodies and souls still exist in some capacity. This would explain what saved Sunny in the first nightmare, why the divine realms continue to exist despite being the souls of said gods after they died and why the concepts they represent still actually exist. Am I missing anything?

Nightmare spell is powered by the souls and powers of gods and demons, like a regular crafted item, and it uses their memories to construct nightmares. And its used to ascend humans, and to lull dream god to keep sleeping. Realms are bodies or corpses of dead gods. And they slowly drifting into dream realm god belly.
Permanent powers or concepts still exist. Gods created them, but they are not part of gods, they exist separately, ie parts of Creation. And it was explained that most living (sentient) things are created by gods tearing parts of themselves off, humans, demons, stone saints, everything. Its kind of opposite of ascention, gods were at high rank, but they tore parts of themselves, which become lower ranks.
Dead shadow god could help Sunny, because it was his(shadow god) memory and he(SG) was part of it, and technically Sunny was part of him, and a bunch of other vague but plausible explanations.
Nightmare spell made out of shadow god powers and memories made a shadow god out of shadow god. And Suny prayed to it, at that point the only shadow god follower, and prayer is super powerful and important in the story, it can even awaken the forgotten god of dreams.
And technically, spell does not give aspects, aspects are part of humans, therefore Sunny could have used his own powers, he just didnt unlock them yet.
      Bottom line, its plausible.
