Chapter 2854: Ariel's Hell

It took some time for the ancient king's fury to subside.

It took more time to convince him to have a conversation with Sunny and Nephis, both of whom he seemed to detest. Azarax had been hanging on the sacred tree since before the Doom War ended and the gods fell, so he was not exactly aware of the current state of the world.

It was difficult to fathom that the very foundations of existence he had been familiar with were meaningless now, and that his disdain toward them was unwarranted as a result.

However, there was a keen and cunning mind hidden behind his overbearing demeanor. Even driven half-mad by thousands of years of imprisonment, Azarax still retained his edge — he knew all too well that everything he had once known was gone. It was just that, in a manner typical of a Supreme, he did not care.

So what if the world had irrevocably changed? It was the duty of the world to adhere to how Azarax saw it, not the other way around.

In the end, quite unexpectedly, it was the presence of Saint that convinced him. Azarax seemed to respect the Stone Saints as much as he disdained carriers of the Nightmare Spell or those who served the gods. It made sense, really — after all, Saint and her people had been created by Nether, the Demon of Destiny, and were the indomitable core of the Demon Army.

Since Sunny and Nephis were in the company of the shadow of a Jade Saint, Azarax was willing to at least hear them out.

‘That coy bastard...’

In truth, Azarax wanted to get off the tree he had been nailed to thousands of years ago as much as they wanted to enlist his assistance. No matter how much he tried to hide it, Sunny could tell — he knew more than most about wanting to be free, after all.

Azarax had an entirely different reason to want to be freed from Eurys, though. Eurys wanted to find a proper death before the curse of Shadow God turned him into a mindless beast... the ancient king, however, wished for the opposite.

He wanted to be taken off the tree precisely because he longed to become one of the Deathless. Anyone would mistake the Nightmare Desert for hell, but to him, it was heaven. An eternal, endless battle between the legendary warriors cursed to never know peace... that was exactly what a conquering tyrant like Azarax wanted and dreamed about.

It was being nailed to a tree, cursed to watch the glorious battles of the Deathless for thousands of years without being able to join them, that had been hell for the ancient tyrant.

So, despite all his contempt and hatred, he was not going to refuse the beings who could free him from that hell and deliver him to paradise.

Sunny and Nephis were not entirely sure that they could trust the half-crazed skeleton, though. They needed a guarantee that he would not turn on them as soon as they pulled him down from the tree first. Both were exhausted after a long night of battle, so they rested on the bank of the small pool of water and enjoyed the shade of the sacred tree. There was a lot of time before sunset, and they intended to spend it getting some answers from Azarax.

Nephis drank some water from the pool, while Sunny summoned the Endless Spring. He also produced cooking utensils from his Soul Sea and went about preparing a simple meal.

“I've always wanted to know... what were the armies of the daemons and the gods doing here, in the Nightmare Desert, to begin with? Were you fighting for the Tomb of Ariel?"

Azarax stared at him darkly from the tree.

“No... not at all. It was just a convenient place to fight."

The ancient tyrant ground his teeth, then spat in a scornful tone:

“And why are you calling this realm the Nightmare Desert? Didn't your parents teach you anything about Hell of Ariel?"

Sunny looked at him strangely.

“That's just what we call it. And my parents had no idea that this place existed. Did this realm belong to the Demon of Dread, then?"

Azarax clacked his teeth.

"No. It was only turned into hell by him. A hell is a hell — a desolate realm where nothing lives. Actually, there were many mortal realms that had been turned into harrowing, desolate nightmares by some calamity or another... I even created one or two myself. Those realms were called hells. But this one was special, because it was isolated from all others. One couldn't just cross its boundary, even if they were of a high enough Rank to travel between realms. The Hell of Ariel was only connected to one other land."

He pushed against the nails impaling him to the tree, as if hoping that they would come loose, and ground his teeth again.

"Because the Hell of Ariel was dead and isolated, it became favored by the gods. This was where they put everything that they hated, feared, or wanted to punish... well, according to the myth, at least. That was why parents used to scare their children with the Hell of Ariel. However, there was another, far more dreadful reason why everyone feared it."

Sunny raised an eyebrow.

“Why?"

Azarax turned his skull south, where the black wall of the Hollow Mountains was visible in the distance.

"Because the only realm Hell was connected to was the Underworld. A long journey awaits all living beings once they die — their shadows have to travel all the way to the Underworld and cross the Rivers to enter it, then descend to the very bottom of the Underworld and plunge into the Abyss. Only after traversing the Abyss will they finally reach the Shadow Realm and find peace."

He turned to Sunny.

“However, if a shadow got lost on its way through the Underworld, it would end up here, in Hell. Forever. So, funnily enough, the Hell of Ariel had been a prison for those who had been denied death even before Shadow God unleashed his curse."

Azarax stared at Sunny and let out a vicious laugh.

"Don't worry, though. All those unfortunate souls were consumed and eradicated once the Hell of Ariel became a battlefield. We couldn't tolerate the threat they posed, so we destroyed them."

He slammed the back of his skull against the tree and stared at the sky.

“Neither of the myths about the Hell of Ariel had anything to do with why the Demon Legion and the Divine Host chose it as a battlefield, though. We simply needed a large enough battlefield and did not want to turn more realms into hells. So, this was why we gathered in the desert to wage war against each other."

Azarax remained motionless.

"...But despite how close to the Underworld we were, most of us never got to the Realm of Death, anyway."

His voice sounded both envious and resentful.

    The Six (7) Gods

‎Shadow God -  Sunny Legacy (previously). Deathless Curse, shaping the undead and cursed legacies. Nameless Temple is the only remaining citadel since all the Shadow Temples were destroyed by the Imperials from War god.
‎Shadow god was not very prominent. They called him a half-forgotten weakling god but Shadow God was the last of the gods to be destroyed and he was the one who created death. This proves Shadow god was deceitful, by hiding his power, portraying himself as the weakest among the gods, contrary to actual strength. He also cursed Eurys, Azarax, Kanakht, by removing their death and shadows. God of peace, death, solace, deception and mysteries.
    ‎-
‎War God -  Valor Legacy(Mordred). War Realm or some theories say it's Earth. Mainly War and Life divinity. Divine Armory, Eterna Battlefield,  remnants of endless conflict with Shadows(no wonder Sunny and Mordy don't jive well). God or goddess of progress, technology, craft, and intellect. Hence, he/she was the patron goddess of humanity
    ‎-
‎Sun God - Nemphis Legacy from Immortal Flame Clan. Divine Sorcery. Radiant Citadel, a monument of light and divine order.  Lord of Light, a manifestation of fire, passion, creation, and destruction. Destroyed civilization of Sky Below resulting in divine eternal flames.
    ‎-
‎Storm God - Nightwalker Legacy. Black Sky. The Night Temple. Associated with tempest ruins and artifacts tied to storms and destruction.  God of the depths, of the oceans, of darkness, stars, travel, guidance, disaster, etc. Storm god was rumored to have "a special" relationship with Nether proven when Sunny found a statue of Storm god on the 4th floor of the Ebony Tower.
    ‎-
‎Beast God  - Song Legacy.  The Sanctuary of Noctis. Origin of beast races and primal constructs, tied to wild dominions.  God/Goddess of the Moon, hunting, carnal desire, blood, beauty, and the cycle of birth death, souls, emotions, memory, hunger and growth
    ‎-
‎Heart God -  Asterion Legacy. Left the Abyss and Devouring Maw, consuming realms and birthing horrors.  The most nebulous and elusive of the six great gods.
    ‎-
    ‎‎

    ‎---

    The Seven Daemons

‎Weaver — Sunny's Legacy (current) Demonic Sorcery, Spellweave, Weaving. Weaved the Threads of Fate, and the  Nightmare Spell, weaving destinies and lies. The irony is Sunny's legacies come from a god and deamon both masters of deception and Sunny's flaw can't lie.
    ‎-
‎Nether - The Ebony Tower. Associated with the Last Chasm, abyssal remnants of void. Nethers statue is behind the altar in the Night Temple hinting Storm god's "special relationship" with Nether.
    ‎-
‎Ariel - Ariel’s Tomb, the Pyramids, monuments of daemon legacy.
    ‎-
‎Hope - invented writing, providing humans improvements to Sorcery of Names and Runic Sorcery. Imprisoned in the Ivory Tower. Left behind false salvation, ruins tied to betrayal and despair.  Power over souls and minds.
    ‎-
‎Repose - the Night Garden and Eternal City, corrupted sanctuaries.
    ‎-
‎Rime - Built frozen dominions, leaving behind glacial ruins and icy races.
    ‎-
‎Oblivion - Associated with eternal darkness, consuming voids, and annihilation.

I don't know where you got some of this info but it's either just random assumptions or info you pulled from random theories because shit like cursed legacies, divine armory, endless conflict with shadows, and half of all this other shit is either never explicitly mentioned or is literally just someone's imagination. I don't claim to have a very good memory but when it comes to SS I retain more than 90% of the important information and not a whole lot is ringing a bell
Edit: hey just curious but can anyone see a thread of comments below this one with me and op? We had a whole ass debate but I can't see it and I think he deleted it lmfao

    Thoughts out loud:
    - I absolutely love Shadow Slave
    - But like in games, when you reach a certain level, after a strong leveling up, most tasks become easy...
    - I specifically reread the first 50 chapters of Shadow Slave and again experienced a sea of emotions: how it all began, how the relationships between the characters were established, how precious and useful each new trophy was, what a tragedy it was to lose the first Echo...
    - Now there's a discussion of some abstractions, will, infinities... the plot is sluggishly moving and filling with water.
    - I'm eagerly awaiting the development of the plot, not only Sunny and Nephys, but also the secondary characters, although it looks like that won't happen, since they're all under Asterion's control.

I can't wait for the plot to develop.

I think I know what he means. The plot has always been slow burn and that's one of the things I like about it. He means that the pacing wasn't as obvious before because of how weak he was. Things developed slowly but it didn't feel that way because each event felt titanic and almost undefeatable while now we have literal minor gods and abstract concepts. We know so much more about the direction of the story that we understand how slow it really is compared to before. Honestly I prefer it this way. I enjoy the world building and the in-depth explanations for obscure powers. That's what makes this my top 3

This arc reminds me a lot of the journey for the crown on the Forgotten Shore. I could barely stand it for two reasons.
The first is the prophecy. From the prophecy, we know that Sunny, Nephys, Effie, and Kai must participate in the final battle. So why should I care about these characters? I already know they'll survive this adventure. Should I care about their efforts and suffering? I'm used to it. Over 200 chapters, I've gotten used to the idea of this world's cruelty, that characters have to sweat it out to achieve anything. Overcoming it again won't add tension or excitement to the plot.
And the second is the battles. I know SS is an action novel, but still. Most of the journey is taken up by battles—colorful, epic, but dull and boring battles. Perhaps this is an artistic device that g3 used to convey the exhaustion and weariness of the characters, but because of the damn prophecy, this device has an excessively strong impact on the pacing.
So, we have a series of similar scenarios and a spoiler that kills all the intrigue in these scenarios. Doesn't this sound similar to what's happening now? We know that Sanfis will reach the tomb and that Sunny will enter the Estuary. He will also most likely regain his True Name, the Spell, his destiny, defeat Asterion, and save humanity. The first two facts alone undermine the intrigue of the further adventure. But what about specific objectives? Reach the tomb? Well, they'll either figure out a way to slip past the main army and fight only the strongest, or they'll just go head-on. Very interesting, right? This is definitely worth spreading out over 20-30 chapters. How to enter the tomb? That could be interesting. Or it might not. How to reach the Estuary? Two options. Either they sail directly, or they capture the surviving cities. That could be interesting, but in a different way. This isn't the kind of interest you'd expect from an arc featuring the great and terrible Asterion. Killing a bird? Yeah, I think that would be interesting, though there's a chance of a "his will was more tyrannical, more terrifying, and more alabaster" moment.
So, half of the mini-arcs could end up being boring crap with a predetermined ending. Why read this? For the beautiful and epic scenes? Maybe, but sooner or later it will get boring. For the lore? Yes. For the character development? Sunny and Nephys really lack development in this novel, don't they? For an interesting villain? Asterion was turned into a time bomb. For the secondary characters? They remained behind the scenes. The main plot points are already known, individual scenarios are not that interesting due to the overwhelming strength of the characters.
So what to do? Throw the main characters out of the book. All the intrigue comes down to two questions: what will happen when Sunny restores destiny, and how exactly will Asterion be defeated. The path to answering the first question is long and not very interesting for the reasons I described, but the path to answering the second question could be very interesting. So why not focus on the second question? I'm tired of writing this nonsense. In short, I still don't understand why g3 didn't make Cassie and the rest of the cohort the main characters of this volume.

Perhaps leaving the story for a year or half would be a good decision. SS felt much better when I read dozens or hundreds of chapters at a time.

personally I find wills an amazing addition to the story since essence at the level of supremes is pretty much irrelevant as they have reached perfect control. so the additon of will added a new depth to the power system.
as to the side characters the cassie memory chapters really did them justice Kai and Seishan especially.
but still tho I understand the stakes feel less relatable
